White Tulips, A Burgundy Couch, And A Bowl Of Crab Soup w/Cornbread (Open Forum)

March 10, 2018 by tamaratattles 84 Comments

My couch looks a lot like this only one side looks practically new. That’s even more embarrassing…

Yesterday we had sun. I didn’t manage to get out in it for more than the five minutes I attempted to play with Banjo in the backyard, but I saw it from the window. It been cold and wet for most of this year. This morning, the sun came out again but soon, the clouds started rolling in. But I got out into the world anyway.

I have been trying to go to The Dump for years. Seriously. All this time I thought it was a lot farther from my house that is actually is. The Dump is a huge furniture outlet. I have been looking for a new couch before this blog was a thought in my head. I’ve looked and I’ve looked for something similar to replace it with, and found nothing. This couch is literally falling apart. It’s way past anything I can donate. It’s trash. So today I left the house determined to buy a couch, any couch at this point. I just want something I can sleep on when I choose to that doesn’t kill my back.  So I entered the store, remember, this is an outlet and the first couch I saw had an $8,000 price tag on it. I was not optimistic. I headed around to the clearance section and there was nothing even close. I’ve been very adamant about having another couch that red wine would not stain.

Image Allison Brosh Hyperbole and a Half

I spoke with a guy in the middle aisle before I hopelessly looped the second half of the showroom. I saw a brown leather couch that would do, and then I realize the price was for all three pieces. It was a steal, but I don’t want all that furniture. And it was brown. I found two red leather couches. The more expensive one had the detachable pillows I wanted but it was not comfortable and the pillows had feathers inside. That stuff will be flat as a pancake in six months or less. The other one did not have detachable pillows, but was more comfortable and was half the price and had just been marked down. There was a lady sitting on it and then sitting on the matching chair then back on the couch. I kept on moving and waited for her to leave. Other than the permanent pillow issue, and the arms not being pillowtops, it meet all my criteria. The price had just been slashed for the final time and was very reasonable. So I got it. It will be here on Monday. I’m going to have to pay someone else to drag off my best friend old couch. But I have one that is functional and meets most of my criteria. And for the price if I only keep it for a year or three, it’s still a good deal. So YAY!

On the way home I stopped at Buckhead Whole Foods and shopped with the rich people. I got two cases of my sanity water, a couple of three dollar bottles of Merlot,(oh the official color of my new couch is Bordeaux!) a special can of dog food (because Banjo has been guilting me to death lately), a bouquet of ten white tulips, and a small bowl of crab soup (not she crab, but still very good) and a little piece of cornbread.

All of these purchases make me happy. I am anxious about the new couch fitting in the door. Oh and the sales guy was really cool. There were tons of them in there and I went back to find him and wait on him to make another sale because none of the other guys really seemed to be working. As a result of our banter, I got a great deal on my delivery fee.

So it was a banner day. I was gone less than four hours and just over one of those hours was driving and everything on my body aches, I’m sleepy and worn out AF. And the rain is starting. I may need a nap, or perhaps to go to bed REALLY early tonight.

Oh in other news, I don’t think my cleaners are coming back. But I am still doing pretty good keeping up with my Lentils Season pledge of being less slovenly and cleaning out the shack so that I can either live here like a clean sane person or move to someone else. Preferably someplace that it doesn’t rain all the time.

So what’s going on in your neck of the woods?

Hooray for the new couch–sounds lovely. I’ve bought several furniture items from The Dump, and you’re right–prices vary greatly. You can find very reasonable and extremely expensive!

Just made banana Pudding for dessert, it’s going to be delicious.

Just had my daughter and grandpuppy over. I don’t think ever told how when my daughter’s boyfriend passed October 4th, his mom gave her dog up for adoption. She was devastated, it was traumatic. So, her dad and I paid for her to adopt it back, but they were told she abandoned the pup, so couldn’t get it back.
So they finally agreed to meet in a parking lot to see the pups reaction to my daughter, to know if it was abandoned.
Needless to say, she got her dog back immediately. The pup did suffer from the death, emotional turmoil, and being taken from Shannon.
Anyhow, when they would come over, if the pup couldn’t see Shannon, she would cry and pee and it was heartbreaking. She was like in a panic.
Today grandpuppy came in the front door, up the two flights of stairs, down the hall, without stopping, up in my lap and wrapped it’s paws around me and was so thrilled.
Needless to say, I was so thrilled.
It just made it a good day. 😄🐕🐕

What a beautiful story. Thank you. I love my dogs – a 120 lb. German Shepherd and an 11 lb. chihuahua who rules the roost and thinks she’s a Great Dane. When my husband was dying from Alzheimers, he kept reaching up for the ceiling. The German Shepherd, who wouldn’t leave his side, sat by him and looked up at the ceiling too. I often wonder what they saw and wish I could have seen it too.

Proud of you for venturing out and making such a big purchase! I am so wishy washy when it comes to furniture purchases! I don’t know if Banjo sleeps on your furniture but we taught Toby to sleep on the side of our leather couch with the blanket on it. It really helps with the wear and tear.
I’m up in northern Michigan with my daughter and her three roommates from college for the weekend. I do not know where the get the energy! They went snow tubing all day and want to go out tonight, while I am ready for my Agatha Christie movie and pjs! Oh to be young again…..

I had to stop looking at it as a marriage. Had I preferred the one that was twice as expensive I might have hemmed and hawed, at the bigger commitment. I was lucky to find something that was kinda of close to what I wanted, and at the low end of my budget.

So the new couch is a boy top that I will use until I no longer enjoy and then toss without all the emotional investment.

See that was my problem, I was asking myself, do I want to have this couch for the rest of my life? Because, you know, I am getting old.

I’d get a second opinion about the braces. And I’d do it on a trip to Costa Rica.

I remember this was mentioned in a previous post/comment, and it sounds absolutely perfect. Hoping to find someone who has been there and had a great experience with the results.

I also need a new couch, some energy to get off of the couch, and house cleaners. But I’d rather go to to a beautiful place and bring just a little of that beautiful back with me!

This one was for our cottage so it didn’t have to be new as it isn’t lived in more than the summer months , all you do is fluff it up Tamara so I think the next time you should go for the feathers !!!

I went along with my hubby on a business trip and we were fortunate enough to stay in an upscale hotel. I had no idea what a difference a good mattress made until then. I woke up refreshed and with no aches or pains-who knew??!!! When we got home, I was hell bent on buying a new mattress…… Holy crap! I had NO CLUE how expensive they were. You may as well take out a mortgage or give up your first born to pay for one! Needless to say, we are still sleeping on our 25 year old mattress! I don’t know what made me think of this random story other than I now have furniture on the brain!

I need a new mattress too. I actually started sleeping on the couch because my mattress makes my back hurt. Then the couch got worse than the bed.

I almost looked at mattresses at The Dump but I was already barely holding it together committing to a couch.

You would not regret a new mattress. After years on my old one I went whole hog on the Tempurpedic (not to advertise there are many good ones). Oh my God, I am in love. I used to get up with an aching back but not now. The bed is so much more comfy than the couch. I pass the winter with my comfy bed with down comforter and fuzzy thick chenille robe. I hate to see summer come. 😉

Always wait for those president’s day sale or memorial day type things. We got a sleep number for an amazing deal a few years ago doing that. You just have to be firm going in there on what you want and not adding any extras. Plus, most of the upgrades are just more memory foam, and you can just buy a topper for cheaper.

It was the best thing I ever did. I walked in there after weeks of hardly any sleep and a painful back, so I wasn’t messing around with them about getting what I wanted lol

I was trying to limit my searches to places that will take the old couches. But there really aren’t any anymore. If they are in at least fair condition there are charities that will come get the old ones. But they certainly would not want mine. I’ll have to call a junk guy.

Tamara, you know how to live – Merlot, white tulips and crab soup. Sounds yummy. We’re actually having rain today in CA, and it’s nice. Not supposed to be a bad storm, which is good for the people in Santa Barbara who were devastated by the mud flows – they haven’t been told to evacuate again, so fingers crossed. Glad you found a nice couch for a good price. It’s so much easier to replace them when you haven’t spent a fortune, and it sounds like it fits all your needs, especially not showing wine stains (high priority) and being comfy for a little nap. I’m sitting here on my recliner/sofa, wearing a full length plaid flannel nightie that I bought in December and thought it would never be cold enough to wear. I prefer lightweight clothing, but this rain is cold, and I’m snug as the proverbial bug in a rug. Just made a lovely cup of tea and can hear the rain pattering down. Life is good.

Love the name of the furniture store – The Dump. I used to go to our city dump occasionally with my husband to get rid of household trash – quite a different experience. He actually had an older green pickup that was officially “the dump truck” – never used it for anything else. I like the sound of your Dump much better, although we always made a production out of it – went out for a nice breakfast first and watched the deer on the surrounding hills as we got rid of stuff. Don’t miss the smell but I do (amazingly) miss the dump runs.

The dump truck story reminds me of my dad. My parents hated that the garbage collector kept raising the price and would not take certain things so my father fired them a bought his own dump truck a new little Mazda truck. I think he probably just wanted a truck and an excuse to be away from mother for a few hours a week.
I had a wreck or something and had no car and drive that little truck for a couple of years while teaching out in the sticks of South Carolina. It was great for buying furniture at auctions and it was then I learned that people with truck out in rural counties all give each other a slight wave when passing on the street. It’s like a secret club.

The CA Central Coast has a lot of farming communities around the small towns, plus you have many unincorporated areas where trash pickup is very limited, or almost non-existent, so having a pick-up is a necessity, almost like a badge of honor. I totally get the hand wave when they pass each other. In fact, when we were driving around, my husband got so many random offers to sell that old thing – it was the area equivalent to a Mercedes in Beverly Hills, but a lot less comfortable. They do come in handy though, and you never know if the drivers are ultra-rich ranchers or Average Joes, because some of the most beaten up ones are driven by people with money. I think it’s a man thing.

Did I mention it looks great in my apartment? 😞. I miss my previous 15 year old couch that I could melt into and fall asleep on for hours.

On a brighter note, we had a full day of full sun in Seattle today. I went to the Seattle Dog Show this morning and watched dogs do the agility course. They were amazing! So athletic and cute.

I watched a movie today I’d tell you which one but it is kind of close to the end and could be kind of spoilerish if I went into detail. Any way, these guys were going out to a fancy dinner and when it came time to list desserts she said they had “vegetarian pumpkin pie.” I found that hilarious, because well pumpkin.

So anyway, I’m trying to control my smart mouth, because I love you. But please, please tell me what a rescue cow is? Do rabid vegan posses descend on cow farms and make off with cattle like thieves in the night? And what is it about rescue cows that makes them your favorite?

Lol..I just love cows. When I was in my early 20s I did an internship at Farm Sanctuary where you live at the farm and work 40+ hours a week taking care of the animals. Some fell off of slaughter house trucks, some where surrendered, some were rescued from places with natural disasters. My favorite were the senior cows and since there are so many rescues you can be on a list for when a home is needed in your area.

Also I have horses and cows are very similar, except the are very sweet and docile by nature…you just can’t ride them. My Mom always told me if I get a cow I have to keep it for life for obvious reasons. I’d like to get a rescue that was meant for slaughter and give it a nice retirement. Otherwise I’d just get a baby highland because they are the cutest things ever haha.

I needed a emery board just now, so I got up and walked into my relatively clean bathroom, opened the closet door, looked at the array of pretty blue baskets, until I say the one with nail polishes, and nail clippers and emery boards and nail polish remover and stuff… And plucked it right out and went back to my favorite broken couch.

I think some of you will get what an accomplishment that was. I mean not to brag… but I’m digging out of this hole spoonful by spoonful but I’m doing it!

I’m actually so pumped you just picked out a new couch. Bordeaux sounds incredible. In my neck of the woods being Orlando, we are still dealing with the mess of Hurricane Irma. Nothing like Puerto Rico so please understand I’m not even comparing. Not even a little. But the reality is I have at least 15k worth of damage to contend with. Got my back fence done this week, next my roof so many repairs after. Just a reminder these natural disasters take month and months to recover from.

Thanks for the reminder, Dancing Queen that even though the lack of aid to PR is still just horrible, there are still people in Florida and Texas who are not back in their homes as well.

I can’t imagine having to deal with something that huge. It’s taken me years to buy a couch for fuck sake. Hang in there and keep us posted! Are you back in your home yet or no?

This was a great post. Nothing in life is more significant that a simple, appropriate meal, the right (and rightly priced) wine, some flowers, and a place to hang your hat (the couch!) when it’s all over. Living well can always happen no matter where you live, and no matter your circumstances. My grandmother taught me that, living through wars, the depression, and many different stations in her life. Here’s to your couch, and more food and wine pairings in which to indulge!

I love what your grandmother said! My. house has been impossible for me to deal with for at least a decade (“Hoarders Lite” altho my husband insists it’s simply “Hoarders”). I’ve been working on keeping my car & my purse clean enough/functional. It is really helping me feel better! VERY small steps, but in the right direction…

We just bought a new sectional last Saturday and had it delivered Thursday. It looks great, dark brown bomber jacket leather that will stand up to the cats.I washed their beds and put them up on the couch and now the kitties are all being good. Husband gets knee replacement surgery on Tuesday so I am taking my week of Spring Break from Tuesday- Monday to take care of him. My office follows the state college’s holiday calendar. I am hoping he won’t be in too much pain – but am prepared if he is. Oh, and we put our old sectional under the carport and posted in our neighborhood web page that it is there and free 🙂

Despite trying not to do so, I’ve managed to watch some deeply disturbing movies tonight. If you have FXM on your On Demand they have some good ones. I just finished “True Story” with Jonah Hill. It’s mostly a crime story.

The other one I watched was Beatriz At Dinner. I forget what Premium channel that was on I want to say Cinemax but that is probably wrong. It was really good but it was listed as a comedy. It sort of starts off with some humor, but it’s so not a comedy.

Both were great movies, but I need to watch a more lighthearted movie before bed. I know a LOT of you are from the days when we could watch trials on TV all day and talk about them here. I miss that SO MUCH I have no idea why we can’t have a live trial channel anymore. But for those of you, I totally recommend True Story on the FX movie channel.

Also, special note to my friend JustJenn DO NOT WATCH Beatriz At Dinner. You will not get through the first course and it gets SO MUCH WORSE from there. Kidding not. Do not watch.

Also, If I like the couch, I am thinking about calling my salesman and asking him to let me know when the chair goes to clearance. Because it should right? I mean it is one leather chair that is not particularly hot. The couch had like the brass nail head things across the bottom and as details on the ends of the arms. It make it kind of masculine and there are no masculine men in Atlanta. Okay there are a few, but they would not like my new couch either. The chair was literally $200 less than the couch that never seems right to me. Does this mean I am going back to the dump or can I just call my guy and do it all over the phone? As in, call me when it is in the clearance zone. Because delivery is insane.

We had sun in St. Louis yesterday! For the past week, it’s been gross. Today we’re supposed to get snow and rain. Bah. I really dislike the first days of daylight savings time. All I want to do is watch tv and do nothing but that’s what I did yesterday.

TT, I’ve taken your advice and have been drinking smart water. It does seem to help. I’m also smoking Virginia Slims in an effort to quit smoking. That seems to be working too.

Way to go on your new sofa! I bet if you used some Yankee ingenuity you can come up with something crafty to do with the old one. If not, can’t you set it out by the curb and pray someone from the ghetto steals it?

Congrats on the quitting smoking! I quit a few years back and know it is one helluva big commitment to make that kind of change! Speaking of smart water – you may also like Trimino water (its protein water) and excellent way of also upping one’s water intake!

Ps Glad you got some sun!

When I was an undergrad, you’d go to class on the first day and pick a seat. By the end of the first week, everyone had decided where they were going to sit. We’d sit in the same seat all semester. Then every once in a while some fucknut would sit someplace new and fuck up the entire situation. I used to really hate coming in to someone in my seat.

Today, I’ve been cleaning the living room and moving the ginormous couch over to the wall and opening up the space for the new slutty whore of a couch that is due to arrive “sometime tomorrow.” If all the mopping and vaccuming weren’t a big enough PITA, now I’m in the wrong seat. The view out the window is completely wrong. The angle of the TV is wrong. It’s just all wrong. On the bright side, there has never been so little dog hair in this room. I still have to dust and mop one more time. UGH,

In the meantime, I woke up to the National Geographic Channel running a marathon of Wicked Tuna. It is impossible to stop watching this show. How can a bunch of guys fishing on a boat be so mesmerizing?

The weather sucks. It looks tornadoey out there. I should probably check the local news website.

Oh and the tulips opened up a bit today. So pretty. Best $7 I’ve spent all week.

Oooo hang in there girl – just one more day… I know your frame of mind and trust me – insanity is all that will come of it. I hope that they show up early in the morning – just for you!

I am a big fan of the swifter duster – makes the upkeep on animal hair a little easier during the week. I have never watched Wicked Tuna, but I have seen it floating around as a binge option… I may have to pick it up now that you mention it!

      Ps
Tulips are my most favorite flower. So crisp and clean in appearance!

That is so great to hear TT! And BURGUNDY no less! (One of my main colors!!!) What better color to hide any future red wine spills? Great forethought! Your are much braver than I – had I walked in and saw $8000, knowing I have a destructive kitty at home, I woulda turned right around and left – awesome delivery fee or not! Besides I think I’m kinda partial to the new recliners – it’s like memory foam for the whole body!

As for life here, the snow has all but melted and gaggles of geese are flying through on the daily now. Every Spring they fly through here and stop in a pond out behind my place – so every year – we feed both the ducks and the geese and the deer and the.. and the… lol.

The painting has all been done and Ive even ordered some new foo-foo candles for the bedroom. I finished last season’s Southern Charm – was anyone else surprised to see “Dolphin” actually defend Katherine against Thomas when they were in the Keys? And now I’m on the 5th season of 90 Day Fiance – with Azan and Nicole being the trainwreck to watch! So, yea, thats about it here! Now to catch up on the rest of y’all!

Late to the party… but yay for the new couch! I just bought a new couch recently and I am so happy! Fortunately my son knew the delivery guys, so they hauled away my crappy old ones for $50. how has the rest of my weekend been? Getting my gas generator fixed by a neighbor so I can possibly have power during the next outage . Above line powers suck in the MD area and we lose it often. The generator works wonder when it works, but when adult children tell you they have run the gas out afterwards and really haven’t….it’s a problem! So I think I am good for the next storms. My adult child who didn’t think it was important to listen to his mother learned a good lesson because he had to get the generator fixed!

I’m glad your cleaners aren’t coming back, they were a rip off. Check Netxdoor, they should have one for your area and a lot of local recommendations for cleaning, hauling, etc.
I searched for a couch for over 3 years in every store in Atlanta, finally checked a store a few miles from my house in Canton. Found out I could order what I was looking for (style, removable cushions, pet friendly fabric), it was built in NC and delivered in less than a month.
When you decide on a new mattress, get an adjustable frame. It’s great for reading and watching television in be and had really helped with my aches and pains.
The weather in Atlanta has sucked this winter. I feel guilty bitching about it compared to all who are still dealing with the aftermath of Irma and those still dealing with the weather on the east coast.
The doggies and I spent the day on the couch watching Episodes on Netflix. I loved it but those offended by the F word may want to pass.
I read every day and rarely post. Never this much, I’m blaming the Black Box.

I made a cake that looked like the Parthanon for my 11 year old nephew’s bd, he loved it. Then I left my computer at her house, 45 minutes away, and had to threaten my son for him to go get it for me. My laptop is among my 5 best friends, and I have to do work on it! Thankfully I now have it back and can check out all my stuff.
Also we are getting the third snowstorm in over a week and I am so pissed. Not only do I lose money when I have to cancel patients, but my hyacinths are just starting to peep but now they will be covered by the fucking snow again. I am so ready to move south!

I love these open forums. Are we doing tomatoes this year or is it only hyacinths? I planted a tree, and have a California Lilac in full bloom. I know you think all Californians are stupid twats, and rightly so, but we can grow some plants.

Oh I’ll probably do a tomato or two in pots. My dirt has fungus and or poison in it so I have to buy clean dirt to plant in. It’s still too cold here to plant. Temps are still below freezing over night. Californians are not stupid twats, they are just… weird in a different way than southerners are weird.

Congratulations with picking a new “couch” Tamara I was born and raised yankee but have lived south of the Mason Dixon line since ’83. I need a new sofa too but ours is still comfy enough for “dh” to sleep on! I have one child still home and kids kill furniture!

Painting on hold for about 2 weeks. Working a long stretch of days then headed to Vegas for a soccer tournament Thursday, first game 0800 Friday morning. Las Vegas tournaments suck! We are staying Sunday night, can anyone recommend a show to see? I’ve never seen a classic LV review and would probably enjoy but any suggestions welcome…budget friendly but worth a little splurge if highly recommended. Ps. I’ve seen blue man group so something else. Thanks!

It’s rained here the past 2 days, not crazy but steady…’cause I washed my car (drove through) Friday! We NEED the moisture so I’m not complaining one bit!

Doing laundry at the nurse’s house, going to try to watch ATL tonight but fading…fast.

You may want to christen the new sofa or couch, whatever you call it, with a nice merlot. It can’t be in a box, it has to have a proper cork in it. You may want some Banjo hair on it too, to make it feel homey.

If you find a new mattress that you like, I want to know. Is too cheap to get a proper one.
