Kathy Griffin On Real Time With Bill Maher

March 9, 2018 by tamaratattles 108 Comments

For some still unexplained reason, Kathy Griffin did not make it on her good friend, Jimmy Kimmel’s show last night. She had been promoting it all week and suddenly there is no evidence she was ever going to go there on her social media. Someone from her camp said that Kathy just happened to forget she had a scheduling conflict. That is complete bullshit. She was peeing herself all week that she finally got booked on two US talk shows this week for the first time since she was blackballed. It appears to me that someone in Kimmel’s camp forced him to pull her.

She also published the above on Instagram today which is apparently the new Gucci runway look. Really? Why do people buy this shit again? Where she claims she was ahead of her time with the whole beheading thing.

So tonight, Kathy appeared on Real Time With Bill Maher. There are quite a few political pundits appearing tonight as usual but Kathy will not be invited to that table, but is instead being interviewed solo. She says Bill Maher was one of the few people who supported her publicly while other people would share their support of her and tell her to please not mention it. Oddly Bill Maher was trashing Trump for the whole Stormy Daniels situation. I am sick to death of every time I check CNN to see if the nukes are coming our way to see instead crap about Trump and the porn star. Didn’t he have a relationship with a black woman in the porn industry? This is a slippery slope for him to cover since she brought some sort of nefarious lawsuit against him. Pot. Kettle.

So here comes Kathy. He introduces her as an Grammy winner, a two time Emmy winner, an actress and comedian who hold the record for most comedy specials ever and more importantly a good American who loves her country and should be able to work in it.  Wow. I agree with all of that, except maybe the good part.

Kathy thanks Bill for publicly saying what happened to her was bullshit. He says, “It was bullshit.” Bill talks about how Kathy is a hard worker. She says one dick joke at a time. She’s never had a writer and she has done it all herself. He talks about her “really bad selfie.”  She says imagine if you took a really distasteful photo and woke up the next day and the president was tweeting about it and you were getting death threats. She says it is not illegal. It’s covered by the first amendment. She was investigated by two separate government agencies for two months. Bill said he went through a similar scandal but she had it far worse because she literally had her livelihood taken away from her. He says his show kept going and he didn’t lose any ratings. Kathy said she was in the middle of a fifty venue tour and TMZ was posting her show cancellations in real time. She says this scared the theaters because now they are getting robocalls from troll farms saying “If I see that bitch onstage I’m going to cut her in the cunt, chop her head off and put her head up her cunt!” She says she doesn’t blame them because they weren’t used to this sort of attention either.

Kathy talks about being on the Interpol list for international criminals. That is just so fucking ridiculous, but true. She says when she was blackballed in the US she went to work overseas and she was detained in every single city. She said it was frightening because they scan your passport and then the guy at the Singapore airport gets these huge eyes and then she gets sent to a detention room She says that in LAX and London they took her phone.

Bill says, so I assume if you had to do it all over again, she would not have agreed to the photo. She shoots back, “I’d do Mike Pence!” and then reassures us all she is kidding. Kathy Griffin is back y’all. She says “Ten months I’ve waited to do that joke! Ten months!” I have to admire her moxie.

She talks about her current show and how when she talks about the interrogation procedures she went through you can hear a pin drop. Everyone is shocked. She says the Department of Justice threatened her every day for two days with a no knock warrant. She was like, “Do they want my Backstreet Boys CDS?” Seriously what smoking gun would they be looking for? I feel bad for her. So she had to negotiate an interrogation in her attorney’s office at great expense to avoid the paparazzi on some sort of a perp walk. They told her repeatedly she could leave in handcuffs. She says that is the administration we are living under and she really believes it could happen to any of us. Bill agrees that nothing was off the table.

He moves on to discuss her lost friendships. She says she is down to three gay guys and Bill but she hears he is fluid. She says she got canned from CNN and Don Junior went on to say that he didn’t just want to ruin her career, they want to decimate her. She says that was months after the photo. She says she is not decimated and shoots the double bird. Bill says that we need comedians. Kathy says we need political humor and people want to be mean to Donald Trump.

Kathy says she does have a small announcement of victory. She says she is dipping her toes into touring again. She’s booked a show at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center.

Then Bill moves over to the table with the political grownups. It seems it has been made clear to them they are not to discuss Kathy Griffin. I think she did as well as could be expected.

I’m still waiting for the shoe to drop about what happened with Jimmy Kimmel.

UPDATED! I totally resized and watermarked this photo of Kathy’s recent Instagram last night and had some sort of brain fart and forgot to include it!  I kept wondering why no one was discussing it!

Thoughts?

Maher may have had a relationship with a woman in the porn industry, but he is not the president.
He is not the president with religious supporters touting morality.
He is not the hypocrite who spend 8 years insulting Obama who haven’t done a centimetre of the daily things Trump is accused of.

I take it that you did not watch the show. Or know of his racist behaviors, But apparently you think that only the president can be held accountable for such things and people with TV shows and very similar behaviors should not be held to a similar standard.

Agree. people need to be held accountable too. Regarding women, there seems to be a mystery there and his opposition to religion or God seems almost hysterical not to mention arrogant (everyone who believes in God is low IQ dumb-*ss and to be contemned (according to Bill)) and he seems filled with rage. And one wonders what happens with that rage off camera. Also, he looked paralyzed and *issed when Kathy called him “fluid”. He literally could not respond for several seconds, instead of just laughing right away. Imho, it was noticeable. He really did not like the comment. Regarding Kathy, I was set to watch her on Kimmel on Thursday night and when she did not show up I was like “Whaaaaa?” A big mystery there. The loudest thing she said, for me, on Maher was what she did not say — no mention of Anderson Cooper her former “bestie” or Andy Cohen or her New Year’s Eve special, and seeming to blame others for her not being on CNN.

At the time of the magazine interview where she admitted the affair happened they had her and her husband take a lie detector test to prove they were telling the honest truth before they ran the story, they both passed the test…not lying, also she told friends what was going on at the time at the golf course, and they didn’t get paid to keep quiet and they are speaking out. So again not lying, people just don’t care what their president did/does or Will do.

Ok, so TT said his “racial behaviorS” – so not just the porn star thing but his use of the N word and then a black woman being fired after bringing up his use of that word at a start-up where Bill was an investor. So… pot… kettle. And whatever Trump did (not excusing it) was pre-public office – just like Bill.

Pot meet kettle… more like pot meet banana. Trump’s and Maher’s behavior are not remotely similar nor are their jobs.

Bill Maher is an entertainer and political commentater who made a bad, unscripted joke with the N word in it. He referred to himself as a “house n-word”. He didn’t call anyone else an N word. And he apologized. Bill has never been married and his relationships have been public knowledge. I’m not sure if he has dated an adult performer. But you know what? Even if he has, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Trump Is the President of the United States of America. His past affair (2006-07, he was married and his wife had just given birth) wouldn’t be relevant today if he had remained a private citizen and didn’t have the full support of the religious right as our president. And this is the definition of hypocrisy! His attorney has admitted to paying Ms. Clifford $130,000 shortly before the 2016 election to buy her silence. This is significant because a public revelation by Ms. Clifford may have changed the results of the election. And it may also be an illegal campaign contribution.

            So pot, meet banana.

Totally untrue. This has been written about by many reputable news outlets. There were rumors circulating about Obama’s birth during the primaries for the 2008 election that were likely started by Clinton supporters. However, Hillary and her campaign never gave those rumors any validation.

Should be the secret service turning your life upside down and putting you on INTERPOL? Losing all your work and being blackballed and having that neanderthal, don jr. say they want to “annihilate” you?

A tad bit out of balance, no?

I love how trump says outrageous, vicious, vile, disgusting, UNTRUE things 24.7 on twitter, attacking anyone he pleases with NO consequences, but the minute someone does something back they need to be raked over the coals.

I don’t think she should’ve done it, but the irony of his inability to take what he dishes out is typical.

Why would Kathy post that godawful photo of her in the blue dress. – she looks like the bride of Nosferatu. I think she’s a really pretty lady and that doesn’t do her any justice at all.

I’m glad she’s going back on tour and think she was treated horribly for what she did. She’s absolutely right that the First Amendment gives her the right to free expression of speech, but the beheading photo wasn’t well thought out, especially given the backlash this government is capable of and the reactions of Trump’s most rabid fans. There are a lot of us who were horrified, and still are, that Trump became our President, but a picture showing the President of the United States being beheaded was, to say the least, unwise. Still, it was in no way deserving of what she ended up going through.

I hope her comeback concerts are a success, but that she reins herself in just a little bit. She doesn’t need to be caustic or strident as she goes forward – she’s a naturally funny lady and she has nothing to prove.

Yes, we enjoy freedom of speech in this country but there are limits too. One of the limits is that one cannot make a threat on the life of the President without receiving a visit from the Secret Service. And even then, she was investiated by the SS and DOJ and let go – She was not “disappeared” for doing so, (If anyone if not sure that she “got off easy”, they should try a similar stunt in North Korea and see how long they enjoy their freedom after that).

Regardless of whether it’s a comedian, it is important to investigate all threats against the President as deterrent to others doing so. Whether you like the guy or not, he does et a bit of “special treatment” in this regard.

As for Kathy’s livelihood, every business has to protect their brand to a certain extent. If entities cancelled her shows or chose not to hire her, it was because they decided that the potential damage to their brands through association with her was a greater cost than the benefit of hiring her. Again, these kinds of decisions are made every day by businesses. She made a choice and she received the consequences of that choice. Was the treatment she received fair? Perhaps not, but entertainers serve at the pleasure of the public, which has nothing to do with free speech.

Oddly enough, the Secret Service has a pretty low threshold for what they consider a threat against a president. Apparently, even an art piece of someone holding a president’s severed head crosses that threshold. Perhaps you should tell them to get a grip, as I’m sure they would be ever so grateful for your input.

Trump, and the rest of his unqualified family who are personally and financially benefiting from their unethical positions in office, egged them on to “destroy” her.

That’s hilarious to me you’re comparing the US to North Korea – of course we come out looking bright and shiny compared to a dictatorship with a starved and malnourished population – a dictatorship that Trump admires and will emulate any chance he gets.

Just because it isn’t as bad as North Korea doesn’t mean that there wasn’t an inappropriate level of investigation done by the Trump administration/Secret Service. (I’m not saying there WAS, but I’m willing to entertain the possibility).

Seriously, North Korea should NOT be the litmus test for whether or not our government is behaving inappropriately.

On Real Time they don’t usually have entertainers on the regular panel. They reserve those seats for politicians, activists, reporters and commentators. If they do have an entertainer on the panel, that person is usually very politically active. Comedians and actors usually sit with Bill for the last 20 minutes or so after a short one-on-one interview.

I’m just glad that someone is giving her another chance, even if it is Bill Maher (douche bag extraordinaire). If you’ve seen even a quarter of the crap that racists posted about Obama, nothing she did should have caused people to clutch their pearls.
She definitely didn’t deserve to be left out there with no friends. I don’t think I will ever look at Anderson Cooper again. It was bad enough that he was an Andy friend.

I completely agree. I used to LOVE Anderson and I was given VIP tickets to his show when it was on. He chose Andy, who is ickier every day, over Kathy. Although it was Kathy who formally ended their friendship, he wasn’t there for her.

Kathy initially apologised for the joke and now wants us to feel bad for her ?

I think if Kathy was consistent in her stance on the joke, people would have moved on a while ago.

The fact she is on an INTERPOL list is outrageous, Kathy was never formally charged or convicted of any criminal offences. Why doesn’t she sue the US government if that is true ? Can they do that ?

Threatening a US President puts you on the FBI watch list. Being on the FBI watch lists puts you on the Interpol list. I doubt these databases have comment fields that say, never mind, it was just a joke. If you’re on the list, you’re on the list, and this is the treatment you get.

I know of a case where someone thought it would be funny to say that a school travel group was bringing drugs into the country. Thought the travelers would get a little bit hassled, a little strip search. Both Scotland Yard and the FBI got involved. The person was prosecuted in Federal court. There are some jokes you just aren’t allowed to tell.

Kathy’s “ban’ probably had more to do with her crazy rant against Seacrest and Anderson Cooper after she was replaced on New Year’s. Good strategy to rail against all things Trump to get back in good graces. I remember seeing her go after Seacrest and think she is done now. She was never popular with the right, so biting the hand that feeds Hollywood was suicide.

Yes her show will be about all she has experienced!! Why shouldn’t it be? We NEED comedians to hold a mirror up to people in the public eye and our constitution protects her as it should. What’s the saying? “I don’t agree with your opinion but I will fight to the death for your right to express it”. The photo didn’t bother me at all-but I cannot stomach Prez Cheeto. Both my parents are WWII veterans and my father taught me that quote-he was at liberation of Dauchua (sp). and saw first hand where the suppression of free speech can take you. In ancient court days the comics could insult the royalty because it was couched in humor. Shakespeare. I would totally pay to see her new show!

Maybe in the moment, it did not, but I’m sure her intent was not to hurt a grieving family. Who of us has never done something they realized afterwards was insensitive or offensive to a party we hadn’t even though of? You apologize, but you shouldn’t lose your career and livelihood because of it.

She was probably just thinking of trump’s reaction and clearly underestimated what a huge deal would be made of it.

while I am not a comedian on the international stage, I have definitely made errors in judgment before and hurt feelings in the process, but nobody tried to destroy me over it.

REally bizarre and kind of tasteless. I don’t get the symbolism of it at all. But for Kathy to imply that it is the same as her pictures is a big disengenious. The heads are not bloody, and they are not someone else. The models are clearly carrying their own heads. (Did they just pull them out of their own asses?)

Kathy Griffin is not my taste but she got an unfair deal. She didn’t even create the art, she starred in it. Did anyone think she was threatening the President? That picture of s a very harsh viewpoint. It was inappropriate (in the same way any murder is inappropriate) but I never thought she would be stalking Trump with an ax.

Ithink Snoop Dog did threaten to kill the president but he wasnt the subject of an investigation. He’s not having his feet held to the fire, he didn’t look se his career. He was written off as an old, weed smoking hip hop star. He didn’t lose his Livelihood.

The Dixie Chicks suffered a similar fate when they said they were ashamed that George Bush is from TX. Does that seem like trason? I find Dennis Rodman going to meet Kim Jong Un to make me think treason yet he is still free to run around.

It’s time we move on. She can perform, can ignore her as I have in the past. She has her audience let hergo forward.

I am reminded that Sinead O’Conner was completely ostracized when she took scissors to a photo of the Pope. It was her statement about birth control and abortion for the poorest Catholics who felt trapped. She had no plan to hurt the Pope.

Can we stop going after women and destroying their lives?

I think Sinead ripped up the picture of the pope because of the scandal within the church and priests were being protected. “Fight the real enemy” if I’m not mistaken, is what she said. It had less to do with abortion and more to do with sexual abuse and the cover up.

Kathy holds a special place in my heart because her marathon was on the night of 17 March 2011 & my husband had died that morning. My daughter, granddaughter & I watched all her shows while eating English muffin pizzas & we got through that night together deliberating laughing instead of crying. That said, my two beefs with Kathy are (1) hanging out with that walking disaster Tyler Shields, who does good for no woman, & (2) misuse of that beautifully precise & so often misused word “decimate,”. which means to decrease by 10%. (Yes, I understand word meanings change, & this word has now been misused so many times that it has now probably come to mean destroyed, at least in the vernacular, but it still irks the daylights out of me when I hear it used that way.) BTW, Maher did lose his network show right after 9/11 for his remark about the hijackers not being cowards.

I went through something similar and watched a RHBH marathon the day my husband passed. I had never watched one before. Thus started my addiction to these reality shows which I now watch with guilty shame sometimes but can’t quite give up yet because it reminds me of that terrible day when that stupid marathon of women fighting got me through the first 24 hours.

      Oh Miz, I TOTALLY understand.

My grandmother lived with us (along with my grandfather) when she got cancer. I’m an only child, and my folks were the only “kids” who were in the same town as their parents so a lot of the caretaking got put on their shoulders.

It was my 8th and 9th grade years when she got the diagnosis and went through chemo – this was the mid 80s when the Cosby Show was so hot that NBC stood for Network of Bill Cosby. Someone got my folks and I tickets to his comedy show when he came to our area – a moment of pure laughter for us when we weren’t laughing a lot. The fact that his comedy made both my parents and I laugh at the same time was proof of his brilliance.

I also know that my grandmother died on a Thursday because of Bill Cosby. We got the call from the hospital (she was there for a week b/c she got the flu during chemo) that she had passed. I remember crying with my grandfather, and then the two of us sitting on the couch crying and laughing, holding hands and watching The Cosby Show (I even remember that it was the episode where Theo and Cockroach were studying Shakespeare and rapped about it).

This may sound strange to anyone else but I am guessing you would understand – part of my anger and disgust about what Cosby did is because of how he is intertwined in my heart and mind around my grandmother’s illness and death, and was part of the “sweet” of bittersweetness of her passing and the end of her suffering. It made the comfort we got from him somehow dirty and ugly, and I hate him a little extra for that.

I just saw the Gucci Photo posting here and it actually came across my FB stream the other day. And I thought, after viewing it, how much lower and more decadent and depraved are fashion shows going to go? Of course the difference (from Kathy’s photo) is that the models are holding their own heads (not a designer’s or a designer’s patron’s head), so maybe it is a parody on our corrupt materialist society where many people are exploited and are forced to go to their exploiter-masters “with their heads in their hands”? To the societal one percenters who attend these fashion shows and buy this crap? Because almost everything on the runway lately looks like mismatched rags that the dog chewed.

But when I saw that INSTAGRAM post, I thought to myself, “Well NOW I have a controversial thing to discuss!” THIS POST WILL HAVE PEOPLE TALKING FOR DAYS.

I very rarely view my actual site, which I know sounds weird but I see all the comments and respond without watching most of the time. Part of that is because my weird insertion of homophones and just flat out wrong words irks me and makes me afraid my brain is rotting. But after all the comments I started to realize MAYBE I FORGOT TO POST THE PHOTO.

Le sigh. And if like me you read all the comments, you know that most people do not which is why I get 973 comment that say you said read when you meant red or whatever… LE SIGH.

About the Gucci runway pics, if you hadn’t included them with the Kathy Griffin recap and Kathy’s tweet, my first thoughts at seeing them would have had nothing to do with Kathy Griffin.

Each model carried a replica of his/her own head, not each other’s head.
The heads weren’t covered with (fake) blood.
The heads were cradled, not dangled by a clump of hair.

I’m in awe at how close each replica matches the model. Very cool.

When you initially wrote a post a week or so ago about Kathy, I wrote a response – then the cat walked across the keyboard and I lost it all. So some of this is a part of that.

I also want to thank you for the recap of her appearance on Bill Maher. I refuse to watch that piece of shit and contribute to his ratings. Oh, I also think that her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel was simply preempted by the fact that they had the opportunity to get an Oscar winner to appear – and Kobe to boot. I thought it strange timing (her appearance that is) anyway, considering JK just hosted the Oscars and it seemed like his show should be chock full of winners and beloved nominees.

Background – I have been a serious Kathy follower and fan for a LONG time. I was part of her message boards back when her website had such a thing. I STILL have online friends from there, and some of us have even met in person. Some of us were even message board monitor volunteers. This was probably a bit before Life on the D-LIst premiered on Bravo if I recall correctly. On my old iTunes account I have all of her comedy specials on audio, and went by myself to see her live in Vegas when she was suddenly filling in for someone at the Mirage when I was there on vacation. A real highlight for me, and one of my favorite Vegas experiences.

I also remember first watching Anderson Cooper on Channel One, when I was a teacher and he still had some dark hair (Lisa Ling was his partner!). His dedication to his career was obviously important to him, and he was amazing even then on some of his stories.

So here is the thing…. the image she helped create and participated in was disgusting and disrespectful to the OFFICE of the Presidency. I would be a complete and total hypocrite if I didn’t call her out on that, as I did when the fucking racist assholes created images of hanging President Obama in effigy, etc. A comic’s job is the dance along the edge, to walk a line, to show us where we are going wrong – and Kathy made a serious mistake in completely crossing that line. Hell, she jumped over it. The “it is art” excuse doesn’t wash with me any more than the “Hey I was joking” coming from a white dude getting caught using the N word and suggesting we lynch a person of color, or suggesting a woman deserved a beating because she was unladylike. Some of the asshats are right – if we objected to the Obama pictures depicting his torture and death, we should object to the depiction of Trump’s torture and death.

For as long as I’ve followed her, Kathy has proclaimed pride in being an outlier in Hollywood, and in making them uncomfortable at times. So, having said that – she can’t really be upset when they didn’t rise to her defense.

I mention watching Anderson at the beginning of his career b/c if he HADN’T released a statement against that image – he would be putting his career as a journalist at risk. He also could have been and probably was legitimately disgusted by the image. Again, I certainly was considering it IS a method of torture and death from ISIS, etc.

Jeff Lewis spoke about her on his radio show (on Radio Andy) when she was going on YouTube with her rants. I was STUNNED… Jeff is not the most sympathetic person as we all know, and he expressed great concern about her. He did not blame Andy or Anderson (totally got what Andy was trying to do to deflect the paparazzi, etc.).

He said that FO and D-List were on at the same time, and that he had met Kathy years ago because they both were hard workers who would show up to events to promote the network and their shows. He thought she was funny and lovely and kind. But he also had watched her YouTube meltdowns and was VERY concerned. He was upset that no one in her household could or would take the microphone and computer away from her, and tell her enough… that clearly she was having some sort of emotional episode tied with the death of her sister and the Trump situation and needed to take a time out for her own well being. He said Jenny and Gage would never let him get away with making it so public. He was genuinely upset/concerned for her at that moment.

So, I guess ultimately I’m Team Jeff in this. Don’t hate Kathy, don’t blame Anderson and Andy. I feel like Kathy might have resolved some of her issues and, hopefully, is ready to be funny again. I wish she hadn’t rescinded her apology, but don’t think that deserves death threats or the loss of her livelihood.
