This week we are stripping Ryan, a 31-year-old school teacher, and Ariana, 29 a year old model who live in an apartment in downtown L.A. The first thing we see them doing are combining a bunch of the biggest protein powder containers I’ve ever seen in my life. Apparently, all they do is work out. Ryan eats nine meals a day. He probably eats most of them while working out. They are doing this to remember what life was like before they spent all of their time working out. Clearly, they have no issues being naked. Ryan was 300 pounds and is now 175. That sort of explains obsession with working out. One of the first things they do is pushups.
They get no sleep. The next morning it is pouring rain and they have to walk half a mile to get their first items. They dash to the communal laundry room and steal people’s clothes. Then they magically find smelly clothes in the trash dumpster. They choose the mattress and a romper they can both wear.
The next day they return to the laundry room. This time production tells us that each laundry room has a garbage can. Apparently, on this day, a nice big fluffy rug was in it. How convenient. These people already have more things than most people have at the end of the experiment. Day two, he takes jogging pants, she takes a pair of sneakers. Ryan has to wear a school uniform that his principal gives him every morning and takes back immediately after school. On day three, he takes sneakers and she takes body wash.
On day four he gets a jacket and she gets a “pony tail holder” aka a fabric covered rubber band. Has she never tied up her hair with high bun? You can also wrap some hair around you ponytail with no need for a rubber band. She chose a rubber band over a pillow. This is the dumbest thing they have done. Can they not take one of the giant protein containers as an item since they are starving to death?
I really like this couple though. She started dating him when he was 300 pounds and now he is a hottie! They communicate well. On day 11 they get their gym cards. Day 12, Ryan goes out to happy hour after work. He is terrified of the bar food and drinks. He’s afraid to stray from his very strict diet. He’s also starving. She lost an 8K modeling gig by not choosing her phone.
On Day 13 she gets her phone. She was trying to avoid taking that as an item because he’s not happy with all of her phone dependency. I think she did great for nearly two weeks. As soon as she got the phone back, she kind of ignored him. He’s gotten an attitude about it now, and the honeymoon phase of the experiment is over. On Day 14 they get a giant container of protein and a shaker.
When they get back to the apartment, the ask production to step out for a moment. Apparently, some guy she knew two years ago sent her a Facebook message and Ryan is uncomfortable with that. If your social media is disrupting your relationship then you need to make some changes to your social media. I get that Ryan still sees himself as fat in some ways, but Ariana needs to try to meet him in the middle. Ryan’s insecurities are really getting to him. He goes to the gym alone.
How am I so invested in this couple in forty-five minutes!?
Ryan borrowed money from a coworker to buy Ariana a bouquet of flowers. They talk about his insecurities and how hard it is for him to accept her love.
But if you can borrow money to buy stuff, why not borrow money for food and toiletries? This episode seems to have fuzzier rules than the other. Ariana was at an audition with makeup on. When did she get that?
This is the first episode where the experiment has provoked a psychological change for the better with the people in the experiment. I’m glad I didn’t delete this episode.
On day 21 they do a huge purge of their belongings as they unpack. Since the experiment, Ryan has quit his teaching job and is a “popular fitness ambassador” on Instagram. Wait, is that a job?
Less than two months after the experience, Ryan and Ariana broke up.
Wow. That makes me sad.
