Take out dinner has been consumed, whiskey is poured, and cozy pjs have been donned! I AM READY! Grab your favorite beverage and feel free to review the blogs if you don’t know who to vote for or want to consider their history. Knowing me, and the day my fellow Washingtonians have had – I’m grabbing the Kleenex as well. (I kinda need a good cry, and The Voice artists are usually good for it)
No real time for idle chit chat with the coaches tonight, as this is all about the artist. Each performer will sing a solo, a duet with their coach, and an original song written or adapted just for them. It will not be a song that has been sung by someone else. There is also not a particular order to what song they sing.
It should be noted that three of the artists have spent time on Team Miley. Even if Brooke doesn’t win, I think Miley has proven herself as a strong contender for the coach winner trophy.
Also we got to see last season’s winner, Chris Blue! I love that they used him for an Olympics promotion, and I hope that this means they will be using his song during the Olympics instead of Home. I’m tired of it, and it was written and sung by an American Idol contestant! I’m sure that has something to do with why they may be dropping it.
Addison Agen, Team Adam
Song (SOLO): Humble and Kind by McKenna (but popularized by Tim McGraw)
Shit. There are the tears, and she hasn’t sung a note. Addison picked this song in part because her grandpa loves it, and she was riding in his truck with him when it came on the radio and he told her she had to listen to the lyrics. I’m a sucker for grandpas. Loved both of mine to pieces (they both would have loved this show. She nails it, except the end when she got emotional, which of course was a perfect ending because it just shows that she genuinely feels the emotions she conveys in her singing.
Chloe Kohanski, Team Blake
Song (ORIGINAL): Wish I Didn’t Love You
They showed Blake and Chloe in the recording studio before her performance. Blake looks a little nervous. He shouldn’t. Chloe is in the best form I’ve ever heard her. In the practice I thought she sounded very Miley. She has a similar deep tonality, with that occasional crack or pop. The set and her dress were also on point. She was INCREDIBLY poised walking down to Carson. I’m 46, and I could never be that elegant. I’ve decided that if Miley and Stevie Nicks could make a baby, it would be Chloe. But is this song truly memorable? An hour later and I’m forgetting it.
Blake and Red Duet
Song: I Am Gonna Miss Her (The Fishing Song) by Brad Paisley
Red and Blake had a similar sense of humor that I enjoy. They go DEEP into the country sound. The set and song are something you could see in the Country Music Awards and NOT CHEESY at all even though this is a funny upbeat song. In case you missed it, the song is about a woman who says if the guy goes fishing instead of staying home with her, she is leaving. Ha! Red is so classic, and oh so good. Blake has the dimples, but Red may have even outsung his coach in this duet!
Brooke Simpson, Tram Miley
Song (ORIGINAL): What is Beautiful by Miley Cyrus and others (I guess)
It was at this point in the night, that I stopped typing and just had to listen. What an amazingly perfect song for Brooke. The word conviction came up in the rehearsals for this one. You may see that word again in my descriptions of Brooks performances. I’ve decided that is why I enjoy her so much is because she has true conviction in every performance, especially tonight. After last week, I really thought it was going to be between Addison and Chloe, but it might very well be Brooke who wins. The song lyrics are also so timely what with everything going on in the me too movement. Adam said he was proud of both her and Miley, and was glad to see this moment, and where she was going as an artist
Addison and Adam duet
Song: Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová
Adam and Maroon 5 need to consider having a woman join their band. They picked a song that is actual duet, and their voices are just so perfectly matched. No other description except simply gorgeous.
Brooke and Miley
Song: Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus
I am sure that there are some people who have an issue with Miley and Brooke picking one of Miley’s iconic songs for their duet. I am not one of them. I loved it. It is a song that has both soft ballad like moments and powerful voice type of moments to show off Brooks range. Her outfit was amazing and she again moves on the stage with such conviction even when it was Miley who is singing. I had to laugh afterwards though, because Blake was clapping like I don’t get it is that supposed to be country?
Red Marlow, Team Blake
Song (ORIGINAL): I Pray by Red Marlow and Larry McCoy
This song and performance show America made the right choice with the Instant Save. Red wrote this song himself, with a friend, the night before his friend’s father’s funeral. This should make the others nervous, because people love a songwriter, and Red is clearly a good one. I am not particularly religious, but the song is beautiful and uplifting.
Chloe and Blake duet
Song: You Got It by Roy Orbison
When I heard the song they picked, I have to admit my eyebrows raised. Blake and Chloe both have distinctly deep voices that even together they can’t match Roy’s incredible octave range. I was wrong to doubt. Nice, lovely arrangement that showed off Chloe’s diatinctive vocals.
Red Marlow, Team Blake
Song (SOLO): Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan (Garth Brooks version)
This song has been covered by so many famous artists, that I didn’t realize it was written by Bob Dylan. I thought it was another one of Billy Joel’s that Garth Brooks decided to cover. And incredibly smart choice by Red, since his cover of Garth Brooks The Dance did so extremely well on iTunes. Red described himself as a one-trick pony. That may be true, but he’s a thoroughbred. I don’t think people will mind that it is extremely close to how Garth Brooks sings it. Well, the country fans anyway.
Brooke Simpson, Team Miley
Song (SOLO): O Holy Night by Adolphe Adam
Competitively, such a brilliant song choice and perfect “third act” for Brooke. Building on her fantastic Amazing Grace, wonderful version of Faithfully, and taking advantage of the holiday season, I am sure this amazing rendition of O Holy Night is going to be included in some people’s holiday playlist. She gave me goosebumps. Don’t miss out on watching her performance though. Again pure conviction. She said she hoped she moved people with this song. Mission accomplished.
Addison Agen, Team Adam
Song (ORIGINAL): Tennessee Rain
Adam said that this song was a little Blues, but I would argue that it’s more Folk. But that’s perfect, especially after her amazing performances of two iconic Joni Mitchell songs. We need more of that in the world right now. What a lovely performance as well, with Addison’s gentle voice and a simple guitar. She has found her lane and there isn’t very many people there which is great for her future career. My question is though, is I don’t know how the lyrics are tied to her specifically. Brooke and red clearly had personal songs and I think that that gives them an advantage.
Chloe Kohanski, Team Blake
Song (SOLO): Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes
I love Chloe’s retro rock vibe, and Bette Davis Eyes is a perfect song to top off her other Rock Chick songs from the 70s and 80s. I also love how she plans out her stage moves and has fun with what she wears, as well as the arrangement of the song. I am only slightly sad she never sang some Cher.
Addison and Khloe gave outstanding performances as we have come to expect them to do. But there was something about Brooke and Red’s performances that had a bit more oomph to them. I’m not good enough to put it into words but but if America votes simply on this show it’s between Brook and Red. However, America may also be voting for past performances as well as the finale. Based on they’re consistent iTunes results, it would be between Addison and Chloe. So really I guess I’m saying it’s anyone’s game! I just know all my votes went to Brooke.
I saw the lineup for the results show which will be two hours. It should be fantastic. They got some great people to come in and sing with the voice artists. We’re even going to see Dave on and Keisha sing again.
So who do you vote for?
