Why in the world would they air the Below Deck Reunion as an episode of WWHL? It’s not like there is not an empty time slot available where the show aired. It’s clearly a ratings grab for Andrew and a ratings hit for the show. Reunions are time-consuming to recap and I had no desire to start a long recap at 11 p.m. So now is it the time.
Wait, they actually ran a rerun of the final episode in the ten o’clock hour rather than put the reunion there? Ridiculous.
Anyway, everyone is there except for Bruno who had trouble getting a visa and Chris Brown who declined the invitation. Technically Bruno doesn’t need a visa unless his electronic travel authorization is denied. So either he didn’t file for an ESTA in time or there is some sort of a problem with his background check. That’s interesting.
After some minor chit chat, the topic turns to how green the crew was this season. It begins with a montage of all of Captain Lee’s displeasure with crew over the season. The were simply a hot mess for most of the charters. Right away Captain Lee is asked who he would work with again and who he would not. He asks to take the fifth but Andy starts naming names starting with Jen. He says he doesn’t know if he would work with Jen again. I assume he’d rather not but in reality he doesn’t cast the stews or the deckhands. Jen looks shocked, making her even more bug-eyed than usual. He says the jury is out on Bruno. WTF? Bruno was great!
Kate was asked if she was more miserable this season than usual. She said yes, it was a lot of extra work and she had to split tips evenly with people she was doing the extra work for and they didn’t appreciate it because they had no idea how much extra work she was doing.
EJ is a total moron. He said that Chris Brown had a good work ethic and Bruno felt entitled. That makes zero sense based on what we saw. Nico is shaking his head the whole time. Captain Lee said he absolutely made the right choice in firing Chris. Why does Andy keep asking people if Chris was fired unfairly? This seems so odd to me. Baker says that the unfair thing is to throw someone on a yacht with no experience to see if they sink or swim. Captain Lee jumps back in to say he thinks he and Kate got delt the shit hand.
On to the drama between EJ and Nico. Nico immediately apologizes to EJ for the way he treated him. He says it is hard to watch and he was a whole other person at that time. He said he probably would have been that way with anyone coming in as bosun at that time because he was trying to show Captain Lee that he was the guy he could count on. Andy asks after watching the show if he thought Nico deserved to be bosun. He said “Oh, hell no.” He said if he had known what was going on, he would never have given him the promotion because he didn’t earn it. Nico feels like he did earn the position and that he can take on the responsibility. Captain Lee is furious with Nico and pretty much lays into him. But he is not looking at Nico, he’s responding to Andy.
TIme for all the hookup stories. There were a lot of failed attempts to hook up to be sure. Everyone claims to be single except for Bri and EJ (and of course Captain Lee). EJ uses his position as bosun and his impending early departure as an excuse for why he didn’t put the moves on Baker. Andy asks if they would go out on a date that night in NYC. EJ looks frightened and Baker says the night is young! Matt says getting too drunk on his date was a blessing in disguise because he and Bri worked very closely together. I love how these guys rationalize their behavior in the most irrational of ways. Bri says she met a guy while she was in NYC. He just left yesterday. They are not dating yet, but she thinks she is in love. Oh, Lord. These people. Kate really enjoyed her time with hot Jesus and she is straight again.
Next up is the relationship with Nico and Bri. Nico says that he and Melissa gave it another go for a short time but they inevitably broke up. Good for you, Melissa. Nico doesn’t really regret what he did because Bri was giving him comfort during a difficult time. Oh, hey, as long as you need a little comfort, then it is perfectly fine to cheat with whoever will give it to you. Andy asks if Melissa broke up with him. before the season aired or after. He says it was while the season was airing. Briana says that Nico was not completely honest with the nature of his relationship with Melissa. Then she say if she had more feelings invested in Nico then she would have been hurt. Nico says that Bri was friends with him on social media, and Melissa was all over his accounts. There is no way she didn’t know that he was in a relationship.
Everything Jen does to make herself look better, physically makes her look worse. She looks her best when she wakes up in the morning before she starts piling on makeup that makes her look clownish. Kate is asked if this was her most difficult season. She says know she enjoyed working with both Bri and Jen. Jen had good moments and made her laugh. She said her worst crew was Eros. That was Rocky’s season. Rocky is my favorite stew of all time. For reasons that are unclear, both Jen and Kate are rewriting history to say that they had a jovial sarcasm thing running the entire season. What is going on with these two? Captain Lee says if he had know that his beloved Kate was being smart mouthed by Jen, he would have had a conversation with her. I think he would have sent her home. Kyle says that Jen “slagged off” Kate for hours in front of all of them. Clearly, he doesn’t get why Kate is defending her now either. Kate responds by defending Jen again saying that she was just venting. Bri and Matt say Jen and Kate were having a lot of fun during the season bantering back and forth. Clearly there are two very different viewpoints about what was going on with those two. Who did Kate bunk with? I’m asking for a friend.
Jen says she barely drinks in real life. Maybe just some champagne. I do not believe her.
I’m bored. This odd lovefest between Kate and Jen has gone on for three segments that feel like three years. Kate says they are “good friends.”
It’s time to Skype with Bruno! YAY! Bruno had gained like forty pounds of muscle. I am not thrilled about that! But Andy is. He is also engaged to his boyfriend Joseph. Nico finally has an ally in Bruno. He says Nico taught him a lot and he is totally Team Nico.
Wait! We had about ten seconds of Bruno and then without even a good-bye, we cut right to Andy asking Matt questions. Oh during the Matt Montage we see a tiny camera on Bruno. He’s still there. Bruno seems so happy! He says he enjoyed working with Matt in the kitchen. Again, he doesn’t like labels or being boxed into a certain position. Andrew asked him if being engaged to man-made him gay earlier and I found the question too stupid to include at first but Bruno really is a free spirit and doesn’t appreciate being pigeonholed as either gay or just a deckhand. Matt spoke very highly of Kate and gave her a lot of credit for being a team player and helping him plan the last menu. Bruno has a different opinion. He says that Kate waited until the last charter to be a team player. Before that all she did was criticize. Kate said something about how good Bruno was when he was over in the corner of the galley making that one desert and “cupping those balls.” Then she calls him out of line and entitled. How is helping someone and going above and beyond his duties being entitled. I don’t think she knows what that word means. Clearly, she is the one who has poisoned Captain Lee against him as well. I missed what he must have done to piss Kate off, but once you do that, then Captain Lee will be against you as well. She says “we” appreciate your teamwork but “we’d” appreciate it if you didn’t boast about it so much. Really Kate? Every episode including this one is about how fabulous you think you are at your job.
Bruno says he tried to be helpful all season but Kate would cut him off at every turn. It looks like jealousy from Kate. Captain Lee said Matt’s service was too little too late. He wanted to see the type of cooking he did on the last charter the entire season. He says he always knew he had it in him. Kate says that she thinks Bruno would make a good stew but she would not work with him because he doesn’t respect her. Bruno says he respects everyone but respect is a two way street and the number of stripes on your shoulders doesn’t change that and Kate was disrespectful to others on the boat.
As for future plans Nico is studying to be a plumber as part of the family business. He is also studying to get his Captain’s license because he and his brother are getting a boat in Chicago. He plans to charter it out next summer. They have not yet decided on a boat.
When it Andy asks if anyone had any regrets, EJ turns beet red and says, “I should have kissed Baker.” You can tell he’s just a bit awkward when it comes to dating. Baker looks gorgeous by the way.
I woke up this morning at 6:30 for some odd reason and wrote this recap. I think I am officially lulled back to sleep.
