Before I discuss the actual results show, I HAVE to discuss the iTunes multiplier. I think it can be confusing. I think the only reason why I have a grasp on it is because of now 3 seasons of blogging AND my “secret weapon”, each season’s specific Wikipedia page. Cat is out of the bag. I use them so much each week to help me if I don’t catch specific song names, etc. that I actually donated to them this last fundraising go round. Usually by the time the show airs on the West Coast, they have the order of the performances AND the name of the song listed, along with a link to the history of that song. If someone earning a iTunes multiplier, they have that highlighted as well.
So last night in the comments, Tamara mentioned that some of the artists were trending in their specific genre Top 10. The the only iTunes list that counts is the fairly fluid and ongoing “Top 100 Singles”. I say fluid because it is not something they only tabulate once a day or once a week like the New York Times bestseller list, but rather a trending type of list that can change second by second. For the first time I noticed the page actually had to update changes while I was still blogging! Typically, when I go to bed, the people who have made the Top Ten are in the same or close to the same places when I wake up.
Not so last night. Twitter was buzzing apparently, as the numbers were bouncing around a bit. The overall sales numbers must be INSANE. I feel badly for Davon. He was in the top 10 for a long period of time, but by the time voting closed, he had slipped down to 11. I don’t think they give him a bonus for that at all. The final results were #1 – Chloe, #2 – Addison, #3 – Chloe and Noah duet (I don’t know if she gets an additional multiplier or not) #5 – Red, #6 – Brooke, and #7 – Noah. Really impressive that ALL of them were on that list!
Full confession, I got distracted during the Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors, and Bebe Rexha’s performance of “Home”. I guess it will be part of a soundtrack of the new Will Smith film coming out. I also didn’t care enough to rewind it. #SorryNotSorry
Jennifer Hudson debuted her latest single, Burden Down. I sat up and took some serious notice. Just her and the piano. Then I started paying attention to the lyrics. Hmmm… methinks this is a bit of a message to the ex. Then she stood up and finished the song a cappella and I got chills. Say what you want about not liking her personality, but that woman can SING. Also, just standing there singing solo with every fiber of her being, you KNOW why she got that Oscar. Damn. What I still don’t know is whether or not she can play the piano. Did anyone else notice that they NEVER showed her hands on the keys? She also didn’t look like she was moving her arms at all, and she had long sleeves. It was still a killer performance.
Finally they brought out the new The Voice Vegas show. Not its real name, but it should be The Voice Vegas. Think of Glee with adults and with bigger stage production. I love it. But I love a good stage revue in Vegas, baby.
THE ARTISTS: THE FINAL FOUR
Carson stated very clearly that the announcements were in no particular order. They announced Chloe right off the bat, no surprise. Same with Addison called as the second one moving on. I was slightly surprised and pleased about Brooke moving on as well, and Miley was ECSTATIC in her second adorable dress of the week. The last time she was a coach, she didn’t have anyone in the finale and I can’t wait to watch her cry, sing, and lose her shit over Brooke next week.
Now for the LAST instant save. It only goes to the middle three, so the two not called automatically knew they were over. Adam was called first, then Noah, and finally Red. Goodbye Keisha and Davon. I was NOT surprised by Keisha, but honestly I thought it would be Noah standing next to her. The multiplier saved Noah’s ass.
Red’s song choice: Dixieland Delight by Alabama
IS RED READING THIS BLOG? His song choice is exactly what I said he needed to do. This is an old school, 80s classic from Alabama that has a bit of a naughty twist. No dogs die, no one loses a spouse, no one is out of beer. This was a better choice than Chicken Fried frankly! He also looks relaxed and like he is having fun singing it. Perfect save performance.
Adam’s song choice: “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)
Solid choice, as it is a classic everyone knows. Bad choice was not having a little more fun with it or changing it a bit. It has to be hard to follow the “Classic Country” guy who has just shown that he can widen his lane a bit to include YOUR lane.
Noah’s song choice: Sign of the Times by Harry Styles
This absolutely knocked the wind out of Noah’s sails. I could see it all over his face as Carson made his announcements, and it was all over his performance. It is the first time I’ve heard Noah be pitchy not on purpose. In the past, TT and I have had a discussion about how we think he could be slightly too arrogant or full of himself. It is very typical and natural for an extremely talented young man getting a taste of lots of success and accolades to get a bit of a swelled head. I had to look it up as I thought originally this was a Bowie song; it is a Harry Styles song that has strong Bowie influences (duh!). It was a slightly disappointing performance, but ultimately I think this might be GOOD for Noah. It worked for Jennifer Hudson! Noah should try some Bowie, actually.
Oh, and if someone could tell me if there is a Bowie song where he sings the words “Sign of the Times”, I’ll love you forever. I swear I’ve heard him sing it before.
ON TO NEXT WEEK
After hearing the save performances, it is no surprise that Red is moving forward even though it looked like the percentages were close between Red and Noah. I knew there would only be room for one country artist in the finale.
A note to those who are new to the joys of The Voice finale (and a reminder to those who forget). YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT NEXT WEEK. They pull out all the fucking stops. Monday, each artist sings three times. Once is always with their coach. In recent seasons, they have one solo song and one original song written just for them. (In season 9, before they had the original song option, they did a Christmas song as it was December. I loved it.)
THEN the Tuesday show. It is probably my favorite of all the Voice episodes every season. NO MORE INSTANT SAVE. It is also non stop performances as we wait for the finale announcement. They also honor the final four and the rest of the artists. The final four perform again, this time without ANY pressure of worrying about votes, and they invite their favorite fellow artists to join them. It is usually very fun and some eliminated artists really shine outside of the competition. Also, the final four usually get paired up with a famous artist or band, and they sing together. Treat yourself and look up on YouTube winner Sundance Head’s performance with KISS. It was EPIC, and perhaps my favorite moment was Miley and Alicia Keys going total screaming fangirl. They too loosened up and had some serious fun once the pressure was off.
I totally plan on getting some good take out and either wine or Tequila on Tuesday to celebrate.
