Thoughts before the show:
This is it! Last episode before The Voice goes live! I’ve done a blog for each night, so feel free to catch up and discuss Blake and Jennifer’s team on Monday’s show recap and Adam’s on Tuesday’s episode.
Help me out, people who have watched previous seasons. Haven’t the coaches performed together at least once by the time we get to this stage of the show? Now that I think about it, they really didn’t do any campy themed commercials either. I used to love the ones leading up to the premiere where the coaches hear someone singing, in the shower or whatnot, and race to find that person. Maybe they have a different marketing person. I know I like the improvements to The Voice app! But I find it odd that they haven’t done ANY of those things. Maybe they really listened to some complaints about focusing too much on the coaches last season (I think I remember reading that somewhere).
Thoughts after the show:
Holy shitballs. If I had been sent a “sneak peek” of the season before it all started, and that sneak peek was the hour I just finished watching? I would absolutely believe it if it was labeled “The Final 6”. It was that good.
.Brooke Simpson “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown
Karli Webster “Coat of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton
Adam Pearce “Love Hurts” by Nazareth
Ashland Craft “When I Think About Cheatin’” by Gretchen Wilson
Mariah Formica “World Without You” by Beth Hart
Janice Freeman “Fall for You” by Leela James
Tamara’s spoiler/theory she mentioned earlier held true. First act and last act are the first two of the final three in the team to be selected. Then the middle bunch are subjected to the angst right along with us. BUT this time, I think that angst was more genuine than any I can recall in recent seasons. At one point, Adam turned to Miley and gave her a look like, what the hell are you going to do? Later he said, you have to go with what is in your heart. They also showed a brief moment where, in a break, Blake got up out of his chair and went over to Miley and said “I know you don’t know what you are going to do”. I don’t know what else he said, but it was kind of in a concerned, consoling voice. I’m sure he gave well meaning advice. Jennifer even said “Go with your gut”. The thing is, NONE of her artists deserved to go home tonight, but three HAD to go. It also sounds like Miley selected each song, except for Brooke, who came to Miley with her song. Each and every one was perfect, and similar in that each artist stood with the microphone, no tricks or fancy shenanigans. I honestly believe that each artist could have sang acapella, and not every talented artist can do that. (Ok, Mariah can keep her guitar).
Sadly, we won’t be seeing Karli, Adam, or Mariah, at least for a while. Karli was Miley’s comeback kid. I heartily approve of that decision.. To match that “vintage” vibe we all have loved about her, Miley selected “Coat of Many Colors”. Matches the vibe, but very different from the others she’s performed. I have NEVER heard someone else sing this song. A lot of Dolly’s songs are personal, but this one is so deeply tied to her that when I first saw what song was selected for Karli, I thought “oh shit”. I shouldn’t have worried. EXCELLENT song choice!
Adam has previously impressed for owning the stage, a true rocker. I also loved that he had auditioned in a previous season, worked on his skill set, and came back to come this far. Again, excellent song choice with Love Hurts.. Still very much in his rock wheelhouse, but simply sung with no gymnastics. He owned the stage with his voice. It is also disappointing that he isn’t moving on because there is no other like him this season. Frankly, there hasn’t been anyone like him on in a very long time. It is a genre that is neglected, but perhaps fans of that genre aren’t watching?
Then there is Mariah. In the behind the scenes lead up, it was clear to me that she is 16. But on stage, with her guitar? A timeless, worldly singer who you would think has a lot of experience. She may have been the one where I could detect a few flaws, but they were extremely minor. Blake pointed it out, but said that she is so good he hoped she was moving on. This girl has a future, even if she won’t be on next week.
As disappointed as I am about the artists going home, especially Adam because of the variety he would have brought, I am beyond relieved that Banjo’s and my favorite, Ashland Craft, is staying. Honestly, as she stood there with the three going home, I had a hunch and a hope that she would pick Ashland. Miley took a comment Blake made in the Blinds that Ashland reminded him of Gretchen Wilson, and gave her one of Gretchen’s song. Different than what she has done before, but still country. If any of you ever watched Amazing Race, you know sometimes it boils down to the “luck of the cab”. I’ve seen teams win based on what cab they hopped into – finding a cab driver that knows where to go vs. has no idea of the odd landmark they need to find, or one who has gassed up recently vs one who needs to find a station. Ashland picked the right coach like the winners have picked the right cab. While I think Miley could have done well with any of the three who went home, Ashland is exactly where Miley wants to go in her own career right now. They are literally in the same lane. Might as well carpool!
Janice, Janice, Janice. Call me a bitch and heartless, but normally I’d be tired of her “cancer story” by now. (Remaining fatigue from Vicki and Brooks, perhaps?) I have lost my own loved ones from that shitty disease (FUCK YOU CANCER), but I watch The Voice for a bit of escape or emotional release. But with Janice, I feel so upbeat. Sure her daughter lost her dad to cancer, and Janice fought the disease off herself, but she loved Miley’s song choice because it was a lovely love ballad that had a happy ending, and she related to it as being able to fall and find support from her husband and the rest of her family. I also love that Miley obviously picked the song with some thought and care. Frankly, I think Miley beat all the other coaches hands down in choosing the perfect song for her artists.
As far as I can tell, Brooke is the only artist who selected her song. Good for Miley for going with it, because if this is a typical song choice for Brooke then the other artists should look the hell out. Brooke has an incredible awareness of what she is capable of vocally! That definitely can’t be said for most of the artists that appear on this show, and not just this season. I am going to be paying particular attention to the song choices for her, as in that regard she and Miley might be unbeatable. I also love her non singing stage personality. It appears that she has very strong ties to her community, and I hope that we see some sort of nod to her Native heritage. I’m playing with the Voice app with my phone, and I only have a few hours to lock in the top 3. I thought this morning I had my picks, but Brooke’s performance tonight has me second guessing myself.
At the start of the week, I thought Jennifer’s team was going to be the one to beat, and I think Miley met that challenge. Don’t count Adam or Blake out though – if I recall, there have been teams that were quickly reduced to one person, who went on to win. When that happens, the coach only has that individual to focus on, and it can be an advantage. In the end, there can be only one!
