We are halfway to the live performances! Even though my DVR implied it was Team Miley night, it is actually Team Adam. Fitting, as today Blake joins Adam in Team Sexiest Man Alive. I can’t disagree. Those dimples! That chuckle! Now, one thing that could mean the revocation of Adam’s SMA status is that thing on his face in the practices. What the fuck was that? They didn’t film this in mustache November either.
Adam Cunningham “Have a LIttle Faith in Me” by Joe Cocker
Whitney Fenimore “If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow
Emily Luther “Lovesong” by the Cure
Anthony Alexander “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran
Jon Mero “When We Were Young” by Adele
Addisen Agen “Angel from Montgomery” by Bonnie Raitt
Quick little note of something that always gives me a little heartburn. The Voice is a little loosey goosey with the song credits. It is inevitably who was the most famous person to SING the song, not the writer. I guess it makes some sense in terms of appealing to the general public, but the academic in me dislikes it.
The coaches did not hold back in the commentary tonight, if they felt there were some problems. That must have been hard for the artists, but in general, it made me feel more confident in their “truth telling” when they are gushing over some of the other performances. Adam brought back Whitney Fenimore. This completely baffles me. I didn’t remember her so I looked it up. He gave her the boot off his team in the Battle Rounds, and Miley stole her. Then Miley gave her the boot during the Knock Outs. I can see a circumstance like Blake’s, where he regretted pairing up two artists in the Battles, and the loser did not get stolen. But she was rejected by another coach too! That poor girl. She has been rejected THREE TIMES. That said, they noticed flaws I did not listening to her performance until I rewound and listened again. Note to any future contestant, when one of the coaches has actually performed the same exact song with the ORIGINAL SINGER, and that singer is Sheryl Crow? You. must. nail. it.
Anthony Alexander, who I thought was a bit forgettable last week, did a little better (I think it was song choice) but as Blake said, nerves were still shining through. Adam is right, it isn’t a matter of IF he is ready for the big leagues, but WHEN. (I am paraphrasing – too tired to rewind. Unlike last night’s first hour with Team JHud, I probably won’t watch this one again in the background) Clearly Adam thought that when might be next year instead of next week, so Anthony is going back to high school.
The person going home that I’m a little disappointed about is Emily Luther. She really grew on me. I thought her take of performing her song like a James Bond theme song was spot on. I was never obsessed with The Cure like some of my friends were in high school and college. Curiosity got the best of me, and I found the original on YouTube. Holy Fuckballs, Batman. I urge you to find it, listen (even just halfway through), then find Emily Luther’s version on YouTube as well. OH MY GOD. I am even more impressed. It could have sincerely been a Bond song. She, and let us be honest, the house band, KILLED IT. Adam made a mistake in not having her move on. But, I feel his third and final choice to move on was subconsciously more as a “I got to get one over on Blake”.
That last choice to move on was Adam Cunningham, who performed a Joe Cocker song impeccably. This is no small task, because. Joe. Fucking. Cocker. You don’t do his songs unless you know what the hell you are doing with your vocal cords. The reason why I think Adam made a mistake is that Adam C. doesn’t have an it factor like Keisha, with her “I’m into country but am from LA” uniqueness, or that classic vibe like Red. He doesn’t have a Loretta Lynn I’ll kick your ass if you come near my man (or woman) vibe like Ashland. I think Coach Adam clung to Country Adam in hopes that he could hold it over Blake’s head. Sorry… Country Adam doesn’t have the same chops as Sundance, or even the country peeps on this season.
Jon Mero gave an absolutely solid performance. A guy nailing an Adele song? Amazing reminder to his coach and everyone else why he got a four chair turn.. In terms of the guys, I don’t know if there is another who can stand there and sing without a lot of vocal “tricks” or runs and still hit those high notes while still feeling emotionally committed 100 percent to the song. However, Jon does need to mix it up a bit and do a fun, upbeat song if he is going to remain memorable to the general audience.. Perhaps an early Michael Jackson?
The one I think could potentially make it to at least the final five? Addison. God damn. I’m at a loss for words. She was given a Bonnie Raitt song. I don’t care what your particular genre is, but if you are taking on a Bonnie Raitt, you better fucking nail it perfectly. It was a great song choice by Adam, as Addison definitely has a Bonnie quality to her voice that I’ve not heard in any other artist on this show before. She may be 16, but there is an ‘old soul’ quality to her voice. I’m looking forward to more from her.
So, Team Adam moves on with Jon Mero, Adam Cunningham and Addison Agen.
I’m looking forward to the final Playoff with Team Miley. Frankly, I think it will be the team to give Team JHud a serious run for their money.
