Hey everyone! Thank you TT for covering for me last week. Kids really get in the way of Les and I’s Project Runway schedule sometimes. Stupid kids (kidding! Sort of). Les is home with a sick kiddo tonight but she has been sending me her input to share with you. We are at the end of a very long haul. This is it….the last hurrah. The save has been used and we are down to the wire. Who is headed to fashion week and who is headed home…..
Margarita is just thrilled that she gets another shot. She is going to prove herself come hell or high water. Kenya wants one win. Just one. She definitely deserves it. Brandon is feeling confident, as is Ayana. Kentaro seems a bit worried. Les thinks Brandon seems high talking to his brother Kentaro. I point out that he isn’t exactly the most energetic dude to begin with and they are all exhausted. She tells me I have a point. They don’t get weeks off in between challenges. It goes straight on through. I would be in an insane asylum at this point, hopefully looking fabulous strapped into one of Brandon’s outfits.
Heidi walks onto the runway looking like she is either going clubbing or on her way to a Liza Minnelli impersonator contest. Get this woman a bowler hat. It starts to snow on the runway and she tells them that they are going to be designing a high fashion winter look. Brandon is originally from Utah so he is thrilled. There is a picture of him in the snow looking twelve. So basically about 6 years younger than he looks now. Margarita, being from Puerto Rico, is NOT so excited. Les thinks she’s screwed. I think she can pull it together. They have two days and $400. Wow! Now that IS awesome and there are no excuses (at least in our eyes). Tim then tells them that they are going to sketch in the coldest place in Manhattan. They head out to the Minus5 Ice bar which is a touristy place where you don fur coats and drink pricey cocktails in a bar the temperature of a meat cooler. Les thinks it looks like fun. I walked in blizzards to and from work in Manhattan. I have no need to relive this experience AND pay for it. I it for free. Kenya is a bald southern gal. She’s not too excited about this either.
Sketching in heavy gloves doesn’t look all that pleasant. They all seem very happy about their models. Ayana is excited because this challenge certainly lends itself to her modest aesthetic. She has never made a coat before but she is going to give it a go. With anyone else we would be worried. Brandon and Kentaro are also doing coats and Margarita pictures Liris in a “power outfit in fur.” If anyone can pull that off it’s definitely Liris. She is the best model on the show in my opinion. We are loving Kenya’s sketch.
At Mood everyone is looking for fabrics that speak to them. Brandon gets a very heavy waxed fabric, a la Barbour, to make a distressed look. Kenya picks out a plaid that is giving me a seventies vibe. I text Les that I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. Les says it makes her nervous, but Kenya rocked it last week so she is not too worried. Margarita picks out rabbit pelts and when time is up and they are checking out Tim announces that whoever picked the real fur can’t use it because Project Runway is a fur free show. Damn. Who knew? Obviously not Margarita whose whole concept is now blown. She is very upset, but trying to hold it together. Tim says he feels bad he wasn’t clear about this from the beginning and asks everyone if they are ok giving Margarita 5 more minutes to grab something else. Everyone is totally fine with it and she runs off to grab some faux fur that looks very feathery. Les says Tim fixes everything and she wants him as her fairy godfather. Why didn’t she grab the faux version of what she wanted to buy?
Kenya is in love with her seventies plaid and I have to say, it’s growing on me. Though I ask Leslie why the hell she has black and white polka dots for the top? Brandon knows exactly what he wants to do and Les thinks he’s being a bit cocky, in a very understated Brandon way. Kentaro has also found his groove and knows where he is going. Kenya seems to be powering forward as well. Ayana is too, but she always is. She’s like a perpetual motion machine. I want a quarter of her energy. Margarita, however, is STILL freaking out. She is making a dress with faux fur cuffs?
The next day everyone settles into work and Kenya gently teases Brandon about he and his model hanging out and eating cupcakes while everyone else is losing it. The only person losing it is Margarita. Everyone else seems to be going along quite nicely.
Kentaro has his mojo back and Tim is loving his look. He wanted to add a pop of color to the beigey overall palette, but Tim tells him to own the neutral and not insert unneeded color. Tim thinks the coat looks rich and we agree.
Tim wants Kenya to be vested in the minute details of her look as she has been the bridesmaid too many times and he wants her to be the bride…or the groom. She tells her look is “classic” and he reminds he that she has to peak the interest of the judges so that they will want to see an entire collection from her. He knows she can do it.
Tim tells Brandon that he usually tells him to push it, but that there is no need here. He has exceeded his expectations. Wow. High praise.
Ayana has a lot going on. Tim is concerned about her multitude of ideas. She has a very clean looking coat which is giving me an eighties Ellsworth Kelly vibe. She is ready to throw paint on it and Tim is worried about messing with the cleanliness of it. He’s worried it will look like a kindergarten project. He asks to see a demo and she flicks black paint onto the pink edge of her coat and he is now getting full on Jackson Pollack, but in a good way. Not a kindergarten way. He tells her to carry on and she reminds herself not to overthink things.
Tim tells Margarita that her dress with the fur cuffs is giving him Tippi Hedren in The Birds. I don’t think a Hitchcock reference is necessarily a bad thing, but he then calls it a “throwaway” look. Eek. That is bad. He tells her to rock the fur. I text Les: a fur coat? She points out that Tim suggests a fur dress. Ok., even on a skinny model that’s a LOT of volume. On a full figured woman, even a future supermodel like Liris, I just don’t know. Actually I do know. No thank you. Margarita is still freaking out, but Saint Tim has at least given her a direction. Albeit a weird one.
When we see the contestants eating and resting I am reminded of something I read. The producers force them to stop and eat because they were having problems with people passing out. The pressure is real, people. Kenya’s model is happy because Kenya knows how to compliment a woman’s curves instead of hiding them. Margarita’s model is worried about the fullness factor of her dress. Ayana thinks her biggest competition is Kentaro. His look is fabulous at this point. As is Kenya’s. And Brandon’s.
Tim gives everyone a pep talk and tells them he loves them. Les and I would like to start our day with Tim giving us a pep talk. Margarita comes in with a plan. She is going to line and finish her fur dress, belt it and then focus on her coat. Kenya is not sure about the shape of her blouse. Don’t second guess girl, GO!
Heidi is rocking a Hugh Hefner tribute outfit. It does look cozy. Katie Holmes is the guest judge. At least we know who she is and she has some credibility. They have transformed the runway into a winter wonderland.
Les and I both agree that Brandon’s look is awesome. I would wear that coat every damn day in winter. It’s a funky deconstructed Barbour and I love it. LOVE it. Les agrees even though she was irked by Brandon. Les thinks Margarita pulled it off, but I think this looks too unfinished. I hate the dress. Ayana’s model looks like she stepped out of a time machine set from 1984. I don’t get the harlequin jumpsuit thingy. I hate this. Les hates it. What happened?
Les thinks Kenya did well and I’m in love with her coat. I also think the pants are amazing and lengthen her model’s legs, but I’m worried that the judges will think the top is too far away design-wise from the coat. We want the pants. Kentaro’s look is Leslie’s favorite. It is fabulous. Welcome back Kentaro.
Les begs off to check on kids, but not before she picks Kentaro for the win and Ayana to go home. I’m picking Kentaro, Brandon and Kenya to definitely go on to fashion week and hopefully Ayana to stay as well.
Zac tells Brandon it is not easy to play with layering and dimension, but he did it very well. He says it’s “luxe yet street” and that it is very exciting to watch him. Nina also appreciates the layering and sense of proportion but didn’t think the model needed the bag she was carrying. Katie thinks it’s sexy, young and unique and Heidi says it is impactful and moves well even if the model was in strappy sandals. They all adore the coat. Did I mention I want this coat? I’m coveting it a bit…
Heidi tells Margarita her fur dress works and I almost spit wine on my dog. She thinks it looks good on the model. A PAPER BAG WOULD LOOK GOOD ON THIS MODEL!! IT’S A FUR HALTER DRESS!! Katie likes the neck of the dress (I will grudgingly give her that) and she likes the coat. Zac thinks the coat is a classic and Nina likes the surprise of the fur dress underneath. WTF?
Nina loves that Ayana played with color. Heidi loves the coat, but thinks the outfit underneath is costumey and childish. Zac thinks the coat would be a hit (huh???) and Katie thinks it is pleasing to the eye. Now I love Ayana and her recent work, but I’m a bit flummoxed by this.
Zac thinks Kenya’s tailoring is impeccable but the outfit is not sitting well together. Heidi is “not like; whoa.” She thinks the top makes the model short waisted. It also lengthens her legs you Teutonic twit! Katie loves the coat. Nina makes a good point that the coat is downtown and hip and the inside outfit is uptown and classy.
Nina thinks Kentaro’s look is very modern and sculptural. She says the back is extraordinary. Heidi says it’s heaven from head to toe. Katie loves it and Zac says this is the chic-est snowwoman he has ever seen.
Heidi does her usual song and dance about asking the designers why they should go to fashion week and who should go with them. Kentaro picks Brandon and Ayana. Brandon picks Kentaro and Ayana. Kenya cries on the runway and we want to hug her. She picks Brandon and Ayana. Margarita picks Brandon and Kentaro and Ayana picks Kenya and Brandon. So much for the girl power. Margarita looks PISSED no one picked her.
Yup, she’s pissed. She basically voices it in the waiting room making everyone uncomfortable and figuring that she will be gone again because no one wants to see a collection from her except Tim. Back on the runway Kentaro is picked first to go to fashion week. They remind him it’s a big runway so they need to see exceptional work. Brandon is chosen and when he gets back to the waiting room he tells Kentaro he was kicked off and Kentaro says “Goodbye.” I love him. Ayana is chosen. I’ve loved a lot of her work up until this point, but I stand by my opinion that this week was bad eighties. My formative years were in the eighties. I know of what I speak. (and wore). Margarita is IN????? NOOOOOO! Not that I hate Margarita, but a fur dress and Duran Duran video coat beat Kenya?? I’m rocking backing forth praying (and crying) for a twist…….the dog is freaked out. KENYA IS IN!! I make a loud squee sound and the dog runs and hides in the guest room.
Well that was interesting. And basically nothing has changed over the last 3 episodes. Same 5. The designers will get $10K for 10 looks and a visit from Tim. Ahhhh…here’s the final twist. Three designers will be in the final after all. Way to draw it out Project Runway. At least everyone will get to go out or succeed based on a collection? I need to go to bed. Everyone have a fabulous weekend, Les and I WILL be together for the finale, even if we have to duct tape the kids somewhere. XOXO
