Hi all! I hope you enjoyed the premiere of Season 13 of The Voice. I know I sure did, even though I’m without a DVR this week (so hard to blog a show without the ability to do a brief rewind, and not being able to avoid the commercials is annoying!) I didn’t catch many of the commercials like I usually do, but I think I enjoyed this week even more without ‘spoilers’. If the talent so far is any indication, it is going to be an AMAZING season. I suspect that Tamara and I are going to have some good, ol’ fashioned fights over some of these people! I can’t wait!
Miley is back, and Jennifer Hudson is already a great addition to the coach line up. I didn’t notice many commercials leading up to this season, or maybe I was busy, but they did recently win an Emmy. So, I really doubt the trolls who are claiming on social media that they are boycotting because of Miley are having an impact. They can go fuck themselves. If you have read my previous blogs, you know I adore her. I also think Jennifer will add some spice. This is a good thing. I love me some Blake and Adam, but after 13 seasons that shit can get old.
Jennifer busted out the technique she used in The Voice UK. I think I mentioned the YouTube clip last season, at least in the comments. Jennifer turns around on someone along with other coaches. Instead of the typical “you are great, you can be the next winner if you go with me” she gives them a sample of what she’ll be like as a coach and how they can improve on the song they just performed. The improvement is apparent and impressive! I noticed on the second night that Miley was leaning towards the “this is how you can improve” pitch to get that person to pick her as a coach sometimes. I like this and hope to see more of it. I have always like that approach. I have LOVED it when they have done it with a performer that didn’t get any chair turns (some of those people have come back to get 4 chair turns!)
On a side note, loving the outfit choices. Blake is the same, but Adam has dressed like he means business. Jennifer looks fierce, and Miley is adorable without those damn distracting flowers. She still has that Miley flair though!
Either all my favorites have the distinction of appearing on the first week, or this season’s crop of artists is going to be incredible! Now, we know from previous seasons that a four chair turn does NOT give you more of an edge to win. Remember, our favorite, Sundance Head, only got TWO chairs to turn! I’m just highlighting a couple of artists I enjoyed. Let me know in the comments who are YOUR favorites, and who YOU think everyone should check out by watching the show online or checking out the performances on YouTube!
Artist: Chris Weaver Song: Try a Little Tenderness
Chair Turns: ALL FOUR! Team: Jennifer
Yes my QUEEN! Chris is a drag queen artist, but all the wigs, glitter, and shoes are off in this performance. Jennifer introduces us to a tradition of throwing a shoe at a performer you like. I will do some research on that. Chris is also a worship leader, and couple that with the fact he performed for JHud at the Color Purple party, he naturally selected her as his coach. I expect great things from Chris. He will know the power of the entire performance.
Artist: Esera Tuaolo Song: Rise Up
Chair Turns: JHud and Blake Team: Blake
Esera Tuaolo is a former pro football player. I remember him, not because I’m an avid NFL fan, but because I remember his coming out of the closet and what a big deal that was. What I DIDN’T know is that this big dude had a sweet singing voice. He made an excellent song choice too. It profiled his vocal ability so well, and already speaks to who he is and what he stands for (he’s a known LGBT activist). While initially I was surprised he didn’t pick JHud, I think Blake was a smart choice for him. Blake will stretch his abilities and might expose him to a new fan base.
Artist: Keisha Renee Song: I Can’t Stop Loving You
Chair Turns: ALL FOUR Team: Blake
Keisha has one of those background stories I find interesting. No, not one of those annoying cancer stories. Keisha is one to follow her own lane. She was raised in Inglewood, California, and was active in her church gospel choir growing up. She was a backup singer for Nicki Minaj, and has a totally adorable 2 year old daughter. Her pregnancy was high risk, and after that, she lost a LOT of weight. When she moved to Houston, she discovered a love of country music. She loves its style, and its storytelling. She KILLED this song. Very traditional, but with an underlying element of something that is definitely her. Honestly, because she is “untraditional” I think she was very smart to pick Blake, who definitely knows his country history.
Artist: Ashland Craft Song: You Are My Sunshine
Chair Turns: Adam, Miley, Blake Team: Miley
I LOVED this performance. I think of You Are My Sunshine as a soft and sweet song, mainly because my cousin used to sing this to her first born as a lullaby. Ashland gave it actual grit, and MADE. IT. WORK. I’ve not followed much of the chatter or publicity, but I knew before she mentioned it on the show – Miley wants a country artist, and is gunning for Blake. (Her dad is going to be her guest mentor! For those who don’t know, Blake has always said that Billy Ray was an inspiration to him… right down to that damn mullet). Blake’s first word after hearing Ashland begin was “MILEY!” and while Adam turned, it was a true battle between Blake and Miley. In this case, I think Ashland was smart in going with Miley, and Miley’s reaction to getting Ashland on her team was priceless!
Honorable mention: Dave Crosby from Seattle. Yes, I do love it when there is an artist from the Pacific Northwest, but this guy did a sweet, gentle song and got 3 turns. I almost made him one of my “tops” simply because he proves you don’t have to do vocal acrobatics to get chair turn. But he deserves a mention because he and his daughter are YouTube rock stars! His daughter and he are the ones who went viral singing “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and his daughter came out and sang. So cute, but it has to be about him from now on.
Can’t wait to hear what you all think!
