Hey everyone. It has been a long week here with no power and lots of guests and relatives. The good news is everyone is safe and the lights came on the day everyone left and cable was restored. It was the day Les checked into a hotel, which is what I laughingly told her would happen. Anyways, hope everyone and their friends and families are ok. And now for something a little more light…..or DARK…..DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNN…….
The whole crew heads to Lyndhurst Castle where they are greeted by Heidi, Tim and Dove Cameron and China Anne McClain. Now as I am old and do not have girls, Les had to explain to me that these actresses play the daughters of evil Disney characters in a movie called the Descendants 2. I had no idea there was a Descendants 1. But I also didn’t know who Shawn Mendes was, so…..whatever. Apparently this is a new movie to promote and Project Runway is fully on board. Les thinks they are trying to bring in a younger demographic. I point out that with what Project Runway Jr. is for. The designers have to create an evening look that is inspired by either good or evil. I know we were lamenting the lack of evening wear last season, but SOME balance would be nice each year. The good news is they have $300 and TWO days to complete the challenge. As last week’s winner, Michael gets to dole out good and evil roles to each designer. While technically the twins are both evil, he gave Claire “good” and Shawn “evil” hoping it will finally force them to design their own looks independently. Michael is kind to everyone else and gives them what he thinks they would want. Kenya DID want good but she is ok with evil. Samantha is very excited for this challenge and thrilled she has evil.
Les is happy the twins have to design different looks. I roll my eyes and text her that it won’t make a difference. Claire is being pretentiously inspired in the garden by the roses which are “luscious and vibrant.” On a much lighter note watching Kentaro and Brandon’s friendship develop and how they call each other “brother” might be the cutest thing EVER. Les thinks Kentaro is just a lovebird in general. See what all this teen crap is doing to us???? At Mood I’m worried about Kenya’s fabric choice. It looks heavy. Les thinks that Michael’s fabric looks like it was special ordered for a flamenco outfit. Leslie also notes Amy’s on trend footwear. I hope this cool woman gets her due finally.
In the workroom the designers have been separated into a good side and and evil side. Everyone is just happy the twins are apart. Margarita is freaking out and asking THE TWINS, of all people, for advice as she side eyes Brandon and makes comments that she isn’t an avant garde designer, that she just wants to make clothing that women want to wear. I point out that this isn’t an avant garde challenge and Les points out that all this freakout is over the size of her models beautiful large chest. Margarita why????? You seemed so excited about boobs and butts until you actually had to deal with them. Go back over to Michael! Stay away from the pretentious twinbeast! DON’T BECOME A TRIPLET!!! Leslie is worried that Kenya screwed herself by not getting enough fabric. I tell her that Claire’s fabric looks like she skinned a My Little Pony. I don’t hear from Les for a while as apparently that made her laugh so hard she had to clean up some wine. What the hell is Amy doing with those birds? Why is Ayana color blocking? Shawn says she is inspired by evil. Les recovers enough to text: Shawn is evil. Aaron is worried about messing up his fabric so he is working in muslin.
Tim thinks that Brandon’s (GOOD) Halter dress with yoke overlay proves he’s full of unexpected ideas and that is good. Margarita thinks it looks like a pinafore. Go design your “pretty dress” Margarita and have a seat. Claire (GOOD) was inspired by fairy tale princesses but is worried that she is getting too literal especially with her shiny iridescent fabric. Tim tells her to “beat back the costume”. Michael (EVIL) is working with his lace and Tim just wants to make sure it doesn’t veer into matron territory. He has one of the fuller models and Tim wisely tells him to ask for her input.
I love that Amy (GOOD) is referencing Erte in her opera cape. It’s also good that she has realized her birds are “superfluous”. Tim agrees. She can say this and somehow not sound like a pretentious jackass. I don’t understand how Ayana (GOOD) got this weirdly colored blocked dress from a rose garden influence. Tim doesn’t either. Tim likes Batani’s (EVIL) dress and gives her minor applique advice. SHAWN (EVILEVILEVIL) has impressed Tim with her “exquisitely made” eggplant and black dress. She finally gets to do HER.
Aaron (GOOD) wanted to do something innovative and fun, more reflective of his aesthetic, but Tim thinks his idea of a drop down dress is gimmicky. He starts over doing something with butterflies. Kenya (EVIL) is doing a wicked tuxedo. Tim loves the fabric, but thinks the model is too covered up and that she needs to turn up the volume. Kentaro (GOOD) has let the judges get in his head and is now trying to add color and shapes to his look. Tim is confused and tells him he’s gone from a minimalist to a maximalist . Kentaro asks his brother is he would change his look based on Tim’s advice and Brandon says he would definitely take it into consideration.
Margarita (GOOD) has a fuller model and has decided to do an empire waist. Tim tells her the model is also sick of being covered up, so this is a good direction. Samantha (EVIL) grew up as the only kid of color in a very white town and fairy tales were an escape for her. She is very upset that Tim thinks her look is “crafty” and needs to be elevated. She is trying not to take it personally. We want to hug her. The models come in and give their input which is actually very helpful. I’m also not annoyed by them talking to cameras as it has been insightful rather than gimmicky.
This is the problem with two day challenges. The designers tend to overthink things. Sometimes taking Tim’s advice, yet at the same time staying true to who you are will work, a la Kentaro. Sometimes you take it far too literally and deny what you were thinking completely and try to be what you think others want (Sam) or just chuck everything (Aaron). At least they are all helping each other.
Even though Brandon has a girlfriend and isn’t available, a producer tries to get him to tell her if he’s crushing on the models. He rolls his eyes and tells her not to try and get him in trouble. He does criticize Claire’s dress which Les points out is the first time we have ever heard him say anything even vaguely negative. The twins and Margarita however have ventured out of annoying land and into full bitch territory. They think Kenya’s is “heinous” and don’t get Brandon’s at all. Claire thinks it’s a smock with sleeves. Aaron is in trouble. Sam is in trouble. Kenya thinks the twins are heads “running around trying to find their necks”.
Hedid is rocking a sexy, cool suit and I text Leslie that I love it when she dresses her age. Dove and China are there to be guest judges. Still don’t know how I feel about this.
Shawn’s dress is a yawn. Margarita really honored her model’s figure and she looks stunning. The dress isn’t that exciting to me. We both think Kentaro’s dress is beautiful and ethereal. Amy turns around to tell him she loves it. Brandon’s dress is innovative and cool. It flows beautifully. Sam’s dress is a miss for both of us. It looks like two different dresses. Oh Aaron, we both write this at the same time. We will miss Aaron. Michael’s look is very high fashion complete with feather crown and in our minds he took it a step further than Margarita. We LOVE Amy’s opera cape. Batani’s is also beautifully done. Les thinks she really snuck that one in there. Claire’s dress looks like Cinderella’s low rent cousin. It wishes it was Amy’s dress. If That 70’s Show needed a Muslim character, Ayana’s dress would be her costume. KENYA! Tom Ford called and wants to hire you! Her Tuxedo jumpsuit was so cool. Les doesn’t love it.
My top three: Brandon, Kentaro and Kenya with Kenya for the win. Leslies top 3: Brandon, Margarita and Batani with Batani for the win. My bottom three are Aaron, Ayana and Claire with Aaron to go home. Les picked: Aaron Sam and Kenya (WHAT?) with Aaron to go home.
Heidi thinks Brandon’s outfit looks like a modern straightjacket and she LIKES it! It is fashion forward and loves the peek-a-boob. Nina loves the ties and the choice of color. She also loves that it’s not too literal. Dove thinks he made it “his own.” China loves it, especially the back which is good AND bad (but in a great way). Zac tells him he has done a beautiful job, but wants to start seeing more from him. Nina knows he’s got more to offer.
Claire’s face during that was priceless and speaking of Claire, Zac thinks her dress looks like “Cinderella on her day off.” It needs bippity boppity boo. He says he has no idea who she is as a designer and that’s worrisome. Nina says she’s seen this a trillion times and that it’s a cliche. OUCH. Dove thinks it reads club and Heidi thinks it’s forgettable. China doesn’t hate it, but wouldn’t wear it and utters the dreaded P word: PROM.
Heidi tells Kenya there is A LOT going on in her look, but…….it all works. She declares that KENYA IS BACK and Claire looks like she swallowed a lemon. China is overwhelmed and says: Girl….. Zac says it’s tailored perfectly and Nina says it smart, chic, and the drama is in balance. She also says that she loves that she didn’t do a gown. Claire’s face as they praise Kenya is giving me life right now. Dove says it’s looks edible. Um, ok?
Oh Samantha. Zac tells her the bottom doesn’t match the top and he hates her fabric choice. Nina loves the dress SAM is wearing, but thinks this dress feels old. China thinks the fabric on top should have gone all the way down, but Dove hates the knit. Heidi says is looks like an eighties prom dress.
Heidi loves Michael’s look and is getting Beyonce. She thinks the models body, especially her cleavage, looks incredible and sexy. China wrote: FABRIC SLAYS. Dave loves the feathers and the cape. Nina is also impressed.
Aaron. Oh Aaron. Heidi just says mess. Zac just says: No. Nina says this is not project kindergarten. We will miss you Aaron. BUT WAIT!! Heidi mentions there might be a DOUBLE elimination this week!
Brandon is the winner! I was surprised by that, I thought it was Kenya’s. Please remember people, this is Project Runway, not project pretty dress. Aaron, to no one’s surprise, is eliminated. They are about to eliminate Claire when a producer probably hands them a note telling them they can’t do it just yet because they need her for drama and a forthcoming scandal. Grrrr. Aaron responds to his elimination graciously. Claire declares she isn’t going to grovel because she didn’t deserve to be in the bottom in the first place and it’s not like she “ripped something up and threw it together”. She says this in front of Aaron. I think I speak for all of us Claire when I say: FUCK YOU. That was rude and uncalled for. Aaron had a different way of looking at things and perhaps he wasn’t ready to be there but he was kind to everyone. You, on the other hand, suck.
My rage is abated when they show a sneak peek of next week’s episode where the models are going to be the clients and they get to pick their designers. Guess who gets picked last? If you are guessing a pretentious set of twit twins who both sound like Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard, INDEED, you might be right…..until next week everyone! xo.
