I really, really, really, hate the political climate in the US right now. I think many GRITS are having the same feeling. Google it yankees and foreigners. We have been raised, right or wrong, to love our southern heritage. Black slaves and white southerners all grew up in the same place, with the same food and the same culture in the post slavery days. Slavery ended in 1865. Slavery has been around since biblical times. It took us a while to adjust, but most currently living southerners has interracial family members. We are doing just fine together. We all oppose and fight against racial profiling and the preponderance of racist in the police force. There are still racist cops and most of us want to get rid of them. The majority of the southerners in the US are not racists, or assholes, or skinheads.
And Atlanta folks get together and roll out their blankets and bring their families to Stone Mountain for the laser show on the weekends. I should not have to point out that there are a lot of black people in Atlanta. If black people were so upset about Robert E Lee who is on the largest mountain carving in the country, I would never had shared wine with them during the laser show. Don’t believe me? Come to the laser show at Stone Mountain. It’s a whole bunch of southerners having a blast and sharing thing with their neighboring picnickers.
I don’t want to say that there is no racial profiling or police incidents here. I totally noticed when driving home on I-75 that literally everyone I saw pulled over was black. I noticed. I spoke out about it.
My point here was supposed to be about my love and concern for Texas. And all of my commenters and friends who live there. But I feel like I have to justify every damn thing these days. Loving the South and my fellow Southerns, mocking my “yankee” friends seems to suddenly make everyone a skinhead.
I apologize for the rant. But my prayers are with Texas tonight. And I am a GODDAMN PROUD SOUTHERNER. And my prayers go up for Texas. God Bless the USA.
