I’m not sure I can believe Kathryn Calhoun Dennis anymore. I really want to, but I’m not sure I really do. Several people have told me about a recent podcast, Be Here for A While with Rachael O’Brien that I need to check out. I don’t listen to podcasts very often, I’d love to listen to them in the car, but for a TV addict like me, the thought of the TV being off, or even on mute causes me great anxiety. Today I am gong to try to get through Rachael’s podcast entitled, An honest convo w/ bombshell Kathryn Dennis of Bravo’s Southern Charm. Since I am already doubting the credibility of the lovely Kathryn, I am already feeling like the word honest in the title is a red flag. Kind of like when you are running a scam for the long haul and write a book called Believe Me.
Rachel starts asking her how she snaps back her figure after her pregnancies. She mentions running through the park and yoga and it seems like one Rachael is a little bit nervous. Rachael mentions “recovery” several times after Kathryn says the yoga was really helpful to her recovery.
How Kathryn Was Cast on Southern Charm
Then we jump straight into the good stuff about how Kathryn got on the show. Suddenly, Will Folks over at FitzNews and how he introduced Kathryn and Thomas all makes sense. Fitz is primarily a very popular website for South Carolina politics. Somewhere along the way of his coverage of the capital in Columbia, he became aware of Kathryn who was there doing some intern work. When Southern Charm came along he thought she would be perfect and suggested she reach out to Thomas about getting on the show. So she auditioned with Whitney. Then she did some test shooting at Thomas’ house.
Rachael is annoying. She doesn’t know what she is talking about. She needs to stop talking and stop saying “like” every fifth word. She says really dumb stuff. I’m sure the fact that I know a ton about this subject matter makes Rachael’s cluelessness even more annoying. She continues to talk more about herself than the person she is interviewing. Right now she is talking about Stassi.
Kathryn says that the producers told Thomas not to get involved in a relationship with Kathryn. Of course Thomas didn’t listen and the rest is history.
Kathryn says that she didn’t know any of the cast before they started filming. She doesn’t really interact with any of the that much when they are not filming. She might run into Shep, or exchange a text with Craig but she tries to keep an off camera life. She is closest to Danni. Rachael says that on VPR they are all real friends who knew each other. Rachael is sort of on VPR. Racheal wants to talk about watching themselves on TV.
Kathryn doesn’t regret doing the show. She does think that the opportunity came to her a bit before she was ready. She says she has grown a lot from it.
Kathryn says she is living at home in Monck’s corner. She says she reads, writes, and paints a lot now. There seems to some therapy speak in Kathryn’s conversation. I hope that is a good sign.
Thoughts on Landon
They talk about Landon and how she is socially unaware and a little off. Despite all the feedback Landon gets on Twitter she doesn’t seem to even consider. Kathyrn says that Landon’s tears were fake. Her agenda was to try to show compassion. Her plan for the reunion was to try to show a softer side and it failed miserably. Kathryn says that everyone on the show has learned how it works now and has an agenda as to how they want to be portrayed. Kathryn on the other hand is simply being her authentic self, uncensored. She says they all live in a bunch of bullshit and she doesn’t like the smell of it so she calls them out.
What to LVP and Patti Have in Common?
Rachael compares LVP to Patti. Rachael says LVP doesn’t give a shit about the relationships on the show. She says she just comes in for the scene and pretends to talk about their relationship and leaves. Rachael says, “It like, you don’t care, lady!” Kathryn agrees. Kathryn says Patricia probably Googles things like, “fancy things women used to do back in the old south” and then tries to reenact those things. Kathryn mocks Patricia for reading a newspaper with gloves on for the cameras. She says her act is so ridiculous and sad. She says she is in her seventies and still tries to screw with her relationship with Thomas.
The Real Tea On Her Relationship With Whitney
She says that she wasn’t dating Whitney. They went out to eat a couple of times and he took her and her friend shopping once. She said on the shopping trip he told her they would come back alone so he could by her things. Apparently, he would have felt obligated to buy things for the other girl as well. Kathryn said it was weird. She said Whitney was telling her what color to dye her hair. He was adamant that she wear Lily Pulitzer dresses. Rachael freaks out about hating Lily Pulitzer and Kathryn agrees. This is expected of Rachael, but Kathryn will never be part of the Junior League in the south with this kind of attitude.
Back to Whitney. Basically he wanted to be her stylist for the show. He wanted to dress her for every scene and supervise her hair. She stayed with Whitney for a while because she was not living in Charleston when filming started and needed a place to hang her hat for a bit. She says that one time he called her and asked her to come over because Thomas was there and they were talking about politics and they needed a woman’s point of view. She said he knew that saying Thomas was there would get her to come. It was late at night but it was her first season and she didn’t know how late filming might go so she went over to his house. When Kathryn arrived, Thomas was not there and Whitney and two guys that she thinks were political advisers from an earlier scene were all sitting around drinking bourbon on the rocks. Whitney was wasted. He takes Kathryn to the apartment where he was living and tried to kiss her. She said she awkwardly accepted the kiss but was caught off guard. Kathryn tries to make it seem like tha was the extent of their relationship. Rachael actually pins her down and says, “Wait, so you never really hooked up with him?” Kathryn stutters and then says they only hooked up once and Whitney told Thomas about it. She says she only stayed at his place “for like a week and a half or something.”
Kathryn says that Whitney was definitely trying to groom her “to be sort of a sidekick to him,” not necessarily a girlfriend but more the girl he was seen with. So when the season one missed period pregnancy scare happened at the pool party, Whitney was furious with her and texted her to say that all of her things are ready and Michael will have them for you to pick up. Kathryn was confused. She didn’t think they were dating. Rachael points out she was living with him and they had hooked up. Kathryn is says well yeah, and we were eating breakfast almost every morning together with his mom.
We literally interrupted this story mid sentence so Rachael could do a promotional spot. Then she said, “Okay, finish your story.” Really?
Kathryn said that Patti was cordial and receptive to her when she was a house guest. After the pregnancy scare, Patti went on a rampage. She says Patti went on a rampage. She told people that her “son had a concept for the show and it was going to be like Downton Abbey and then this shameless strumpet came in and ruined everything!” Oh so that is why Patti hires a butler for filming season. She’s been watching Downton Abbey for clues on how to look wealthy. Oh, Patti.
Rachael actually jumps in to correct Kathryn on her relationship with Whitney. When Kathryn says she broke Whitney’s heart and that is why Patti turned on her, Rachael tells Kathryn she didn’t break his heart, she bruised his ego and goes on to explain the Kathryn and Whitey relationship to Kathryn.
Kathryn says that Whitney is really nice to her now. He had friends in recovery so he is compassionate. He says that in Key West after filming wrapped she went out with Whitney and Shep to a bar and Shep was drunk out of his mind and taking his shirt off and acting all crazy and Whitney took her with him and made sure she was okay. Kathryn says that Whitney is a nice guy who puts up a protective wall of pretension and is a bit insecure and socially awkward.
A Side Trip To Into Psychology 101 Concepts
Kathryn plugs the book The 48 Laws of Power again and says that it was really beneficial to her. That is the book she was reading in Key West. Kathryn gives Rachael a short Psych 101 lecture. Rachael is mesmerized. She tells Kathryn she needs to write a book. Kathryn agrees and says there was so much going on behind the scenes between her and Thomas that the viewers don’t know about.
Kathryn Slept With Thomas After The Reunion
Rachael asks if she thinks she and Thomas will ever get back together. Kathryn says no, but without a lot of conviction. Then we get to the big news. She says, “Do you want me to admit something?I have never told anyone this, but after this year’s reunion or whatever, you know how in the past, we’ve hooked up afterwards? That happened this year, and this is the first time I’m saying it.” Kathryn is sort of laughing.
Rachael asks if they can get back together. Kathryn stutters a bit and says, ” I don’t know. I don’t think he had the ability to commit.” Rachael says she thinks they could be good together. Kathryn says, “We could be, it would take a lot of work. And at this point in his life…I don’t know if he is able to make that commitment… um to someone or something. He’s never had to be accountable I guess, to someone else.”
Rachael asks if he has ever been married. Kathryn explains that Thomas got married at 25 when he first started out in politics because he thought that was part of the job requirement and they divorced after a year. She mentions his many engagements including one where he called the bride to be the day of the wedding to tell her he wasn’t showing up. Kathryn says Thomas has a fear of attachment. Kathryn says she put up with a lot to prove that she was not going to leave him.
Rachael asks again if they could ever be together again. Kathryn says she will never say never because they have said that so many times in the past. She refers back to the reunion that was just filmed last June, “When we’re around each other… just like after the reunion… we immediately gravitate towards each other. There’s this like look that we give each other, like we’ve been through a lot and there’s still that attraction um, and he can still charm me, but I know that it’s like… such a specific kind of charm.”
Then there is some sort of wifi issue that interrupts. Why does this keep happening at the good parts?
Kathryn continues, “He can charm me, but I realize it’s not…(sigh)… it’s like a temporary type of intention. I don’t know if that makes sense .It’s only for that moment and after that he’s gonna continue doing what T-Rav wants to do, and that’s okay.”
Kathryn seems frustrated with Thomas because he tells her that he wants to settle down and that he is lonely when they talk to each other now. He seems to want to give it a shot with out the cameras and just thrive as a family. She knows deep down that is what he wants. She says that he is a product of his past and he really can’t maintain that sort of relationship.
Kathryn says she has been dating a guy from Michigan that she met on Bumble. Kathryn said she sort of did it on a lark, and she is embarrassed to have met him. Rachel tells Kathryn to get on Raya, which is the celebrity dating app. Kathryn seems to want to but doesn’t think she would be accepted. I think she would be, but I hope she doesn’t do it. She doesn’t need to date celebrities. This guy from Michigan sounds perfect. Kathryn says she’s prefer to meet someone organically.
Kathryn wants to move to LA. She has this whole custody issue to consider. Rachael asked her to join them this week in LA.
Off camera friends for her are basically Danni, Naomi and Craig and she sometimes runs into Shep. She says Cameron was only nice to her because she was dragged the previous season for being so hateful and she needed to mend her image. Rachael says that Shep is in LA now with Whitney.
Kathryn says she likes to shop at thrift shops.
She says Thomas and Landon hooked up. She says that Thomas always tells girls to deny, deny, deny. So they just stick to the lie. Kathryn said she is glad that everyone knows now why she was so furious with Landon.
Kathryn says she has her kids now every other weekend from Friday until Monday. Looking back on the custody agreement, that puts her on Phase 3? It seems way early for her to be there, but if she is then more power to her! She says that she gets them three nights now so she is really happy about that. So that is phase three. She says that the kids are really cute. Kensie is getting in to makeup and playing dress up. She says Saint, who will be two in November is learning how to say no, and not snatch things back. Rachael says, “Oh so he can speak now?” I feel like she is playing dumb here to get more info on why he is just now learning to say no. Kathryn doesn’t give any further information.
She’s asked about her relationship with Jennifer Snowden. She says she sent her an email after seeing photos of her with the kids online to say she was happy for her. Kathryn says she has no idea why she would do that because after the reunion, she gave her a hug and was nice and then later she sees her on Twitter saying a lot of bullshit. Rachael says that Jennifer seems nice and they could be friend again. Because Rachael knows. She says that Jennifer is nice but seems driven by wanting to be on the show. She says they can be friendly with her but she doesn’t trust her.
Kathryn says Craig, Naomie and Kathryn are the only ones being real and the others go to such lengths to pick on the three of them. She was unhappy with how Shep treats Craig.
This is why I don’t recap podcasts. This literally took all day.
