All of Georgia is mourning for Greg Allman today as he is laid to rest in Macon. Allman died in his Savannah home from complications of liver cancer and I find myself up listening to his music tonight. He was born in Nashville but considered Macon his home.
Though the Allman Brothers were more my older siblings thing, when I was in college I used to go to a bar in Athens called The Foundry to shoot pool with my friend Julia. I reckon that is not a thing anymore, but me and Julia would go there together, and there was an actual juke box that had Whipping Post on it. We’d play that song over and over and leave with the local boys instead of the UGA preps and get in all sorts of trouble.
Thanks for the fond memories, Greg.
Today, former President Jimmy Carter, Cher, and many others are in Macon to give Greg a big send off. I’m there in spirit.
If you are going down. Here’s some info regarding driving.
My his soul shine on…
Love Gregg and Whipping Post!! RIP!
Love Greg and the Allman Bros. Another favorite is “I’m No Angel.”
Loved Greg. Such a tragic day for his fans. I remember driving to Macon so many times to see their ‘unannounced’ free concerts. Feeling so sad today…snif, snif
“GREGORY’S GOING TO GET SCREWED-UP FROM TIME TO TIME– AND SO AM I.”

“Our whole world as we knew it was shot to ratshit. I ought to write a soap opera.”
–Cher
RIP Greg Allman.
Melissa was my favorite, but ‘let me show you my tattoo’ was one of my favorite lyrics ever.
When I lived in Boston and got homesick for Georgia, The Allman Brothers always made me feel better. RIP.
Soul shine is one of my faves and is a daily song I listen to. RIP
Iconic band, one of the most beautiful voices in rock and beautiful songs. Greg Allman will never be forgotten as he lives forever thru his music. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
I had the pleasure of meeting him years ago randomly as we were both passing through Dallas. Super nice dude. My heart goes out to his kids and other loved ones. RIP Gregg.
I used to shoot pool at a joint in Athens that had Mountain Jam on the jukebox. That sucker’s like half an hour long. We listen to them all the time, still. RIP, Gregg. BTW, I love that you chose a pic w/ Cher. How scandalous!
Eat a peach.
Seen Allman Brothers many times. Great music. We’ve lost so many of the greats in the last year.
Oh thanks for that great post and music. I loved Greg and I adore Eric as well. RIP Greg. Now you and your brother are reunited in heaven!!
Sad day. TT what a great idea to listen to their music tonight. I just happen to have a cd of their greatest hits. They did some of the best Southern Rock which has been my favorite. Rest in PEACE Greg!!!
RIP Gregg. A huge piece of musical background of my life story. Thanks for posting the video TT.
Too many songs to pick from, too many memories (some hazy) associated with them. Its been a series of losses of fantastic, unique artists and it’s only June. He was such an influence on many – RIP to Gregg, blessings and peace to his loved ones.
Saw the Allman Brothers many times when they played for free in Piedmont Park back before Duane ate the peach and many times after in concert. Greg had such a great bluesy voice and Dickie Betts is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Also saw the original Lynard Skynard. My first concert was The Beatles in the Atlanta Stadium. Saw the Stones at the Fox when they were booked as “The Cockroaches”. If your not from the area Google The Fox, it’s a beautiful old theater. I had the privilege of seeing some of the greats greats of the 60’s & 70’s in Atlanta, way too many to list here. Anyone from Atlanta remember Richards or the Electric Ballroom? Or Lewis Grizzard’s columns? I hope Greg is jamming with Duane and Berry tonight!
I subscribed to the Atlanta paper specifically for Lewis’ column. I sat in his lap once, in an Athens bar after a GA game. Well, near his lap. He was pretty frail by then, bless his heart, but still frisky. I still have most of his books.
You got a couple years on me with the other stuff, but I will say there should be an Alex Cooley statue somewhere in Atlanta.
There is no doubt I love the Allman Bros. Band. But a whole dimension was added when Devon Allman, Greg’s 2nd oldest, settled in the area. He plays monthly gigs here, posts on fb like a parent, etc. He related how Greg was welcoming his grands and kids home. So they could all be united.
It was a double hit, knowing a great musician was gone, as well as a man who tried to mend his family as best he could.
Brilliant band with a tragic history, but we need a “lighter side-of” right now, so, here’s my favorite Greg’n’Cher story (I think it’s from a back-issue of RS).
Not long after Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, they were invited to a dinner at the White House. The couple was sitting at the table, and finger-bowls had been set at each place. Greg and Cher reached for their spoons, used them to sip the full contents of said bowls, and politely praised the flavor of the soup course.
Cher was a recent ex-Flower-Child still, and the Allmans were born in the finger-bowl-free region in my neck of the Fla coast… Always thought it was adorable that they tried so hard to do the right thing.
