UPDATED!!! So I Guess We Need To Talk About Kathy Griffin

May 30, 2017 by tamaratattles 208 Comments

A few years ago, there was a show, Mrs. Eastwood and Company that starred Clint Eastwood’s wife (at the time) Dina and their two daughters Francesca and Morgan. It was a trainwreck of a show. Dina had this weird band she was representing and they were living in the house for filming. It was all very odd and fascinating. Francesca was dating a guy named Tyler Shields who was a photographer. More specifically, Tyler was a shock photographer. He was a really creepy guy. On the show he did a shoot with Francesa where she poured gasoline on a $100,000 Birkin bag and lit it on fire. Both Francesca and Tyler received death threats for that.  Tyler has continued to shoot very controversial things.

Tyler it seems has hooked up with Kathy Griffin, a comedian who also likes to do things for shock value. I am a fan of Kathy Griffin. I loved her strong black woman comedy routine. I loved Life on the D List. She’s funny.  These photos and videos are not funny.

UPDATED. Kathy has taken down the image and issued the above apology.

But what she has done now with this Tyler idiot is not funny and it may well be the end of her career. There are groups of people on the liberal left that are beyond distraught over the current president. I get it. He is saying and doing a lot of disturbing things. My anxiety goes through the roof each day when I check with the news to see what new dangers were are facing. Times are scary for people of all political backgrounds.

But we are all on the same pilotless plane together. I’m going to need to see less histrionics and more calm leadership. I need fewer people thrashing about in their seats screaming that we are all going to die and more stoic flight attendants pretending like things are going to be okay. Most importantly, I need a Captain Sully to appear from somewhere on the plane and make an emergency landing.

Today Kathy and and Tyler are the screaming lunatics on either side of me in a middle seat on a plane without a pilot. This is not helping.

It’s a shame because we could all use some of Kathy’s hilarious humor these days. That would help.

Those are my thoughts. What are yours?

As an Arab American, I truly appreciate your comment, Denise. My family’s homeland has been completely torn apart and it seems the terrorists are the ones in control. I’m thankful my grandparents are no longer around to see what has happened to their beloved countries…

They both need to ruined financially. Some very mentally disturbed individuals that just happen to associate themselves with our Democratic Party, This is not comedy – this is not shock – this is an act of pure HATE. These are two very mentally disturbed people that give a valid argument for reopening the state mental institutions of the past. What kind of homes did these people come from ??? What ethics did the parents instill in these sick individuals ? Tyler joked that he hoped they would let him visit Kathy in Guantanamo after this stunt and Kathy said they would both be in federal prison. It is better we keep them here and watch them go penniless and wither before our eyes.. ANYONE that would give either of these people money should be considered united in their act of pure HATE !!!

I am one of those, just because you have the right to do it does not mean it is the right thing to do type of people. While it was a very long right years for me, I respected the office and would never dream of doing something violent like that. I have always enjoyed Kathy and her comedy, but this is a no go for me.

When first seeing this, naturally I thought, will TT post her thoughts. I’m a fan as well of Kathy Griffin, remember that Eastwood show, but do not recall the photographer. I don’t see any need for the picture, and have plenty to fear without things like this from people like her. Timing is bad, and I just can’t see what the benefit is except for upsetting those currently upset.

What is different, though, is Trump has not been given a chance to govern. He is being besieged on all sides. Obama was given a chance to govern and a huge amount of support. All sides came together to wish him well and support his beginning days.

The same cannot be said here- heck, newscasters cried on election night. Others started attacking, the outgoing administration and its department heads started accusing him, before they left office. They changed laws and shared confidential information about the incoming administration, raising questions about them and their activities, in ways that were previously illegal, in order to set them up as they arrived. Had it happened when Obama arrived, we’d have never heard the end of it.

There has not been a period when Trump could get his administration together- the leaks and lies started on hour one. And they continue There has never been such an overall apparent assault on a presidency and a planned attack from hour one.

Nor has there been a recently retired president who returned to live in DC for the express purpose of bringing down his successor, as Obama has openly declared. he and his people set Trump up on so many levels- and continue to each day.

No one is perfect here. Everyone has made mistakes. Trump is certainly not. But he is our president now we all need him to succeed. Which is why anyone who attempts to hurt him is hurting al of us.

The truth on all of this lies in the middle some where- but what is true is that many are so emotional they cannot look at any of it with a modicum of fairness or open critical thinking. They start with a bias so substantial they are unwilling to open their eyes and consider the sources of their information and whether they might have a reason to say what they say. This is true on both sides. Everyone involved- every American who cares- needs to rethink it from these standpoints. And I think that means most of us , myself included.

Maybe Kathy’s hatred laced ugliness can give us all the jumpstart we need.

He’s gotten most of his administrative picks, if not all. Certainly there has been opposition in Congress from Democrats and a few independents about the demolition of the ACA. THAT IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK. New legislation should be debated for months, not hours! Heard Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman don’t forget, speak very eloquently on this and other problems (not just with the current administration, but Congress as well.)

You mention “hour one”. The problem is that he should have had his administration put together BEFORE hour one. That is what the President Elect is SUPPOSED to do. Every candidate previous to this – the Bushes, the Clintons, Reagan, and so on, probably had people in mind before they even won! THAT was his chance! And there WAS opposition to Obama – lets not look at the past with rose colored glasses, or think that this President has been treated the “worst of all time”. His poor me attitude is unbecoming of a president. While I appreciate it greatly when my government officials have business experience, Government is NOT a business. You cannot refuse service to your constituents when they piss you off, nor can you declare bankruptcy in order to screw over your subcontractors.

This is going off topic – but I had to type something. Just because Kathy’s photo was wrong doesn’t mean the President is right. She is reaping the consequences, as she has been fired from CNN and is losing ticket sales. The President is reaping what he sowed as well – he was part of that vitriol towards Obama. If Obama had been white with a father from Iceland, no one would have questioned his birth status.

Sorry but you’re incorrect. All within the first four months from election through February after his inauguration, President Obama had his name scrawled across buildings with the n-word, black churches were torched, likenesses of him were hung by nooses from trees and in school stairwells, to name just a few things. Where in there did he “get the chance to govern”?

I love Kathy Griffin because she’s not afraid to say what she means. I absolutely think she went too far. But to say that it’s different because it’s one party or the other is ludicrous. It’s humanity.

The joke has gone way to far. I understand everyone does not care for every President. I understand completely cause I can’t stand behind a lot of what Trump is trying to ‘sell’ us but there is a certain amount of respect afforded to our President. Obviously Trump never gave that same respect to Obama and on many times lead attacks on his character which were equally deplorable and definitely not becoming of the future President. That being said this is the hand we’ve been dealt. I do not think disrespectful behavior towards our leader will promote anything positive from other countries. I’m completely ok with ribbing him in all the right spots but threats of death are off the table.

There were MANY people who were distraught when Obama was elected. The attitude at the time was, ” the people have spoken, sit down and shut up”. If you voiced any opposition to him you were labeled a racist and a bigot, as though the only reason To dislike or disagree with him was racially motivated not policy based. In any event, if a Conservative had done this to Obama, I cannot begin to imagine the backlash! Pitchforks and torches as far as the eye can see! Look at what happened to Tim Allen for speaking out. I just find this behavior disgusting, regardless of which side you are on. This kind of childish, mean spirited, disrespectful behavior should not be tolerated. A very dangerous precedent is being set his for what is acceptable treatment for POTUS.

OP said if someone did something similar to Obama, she “can’t imagine” the backlash. I pointed out that something very similar did in fact happen when Obama took office. That comment doesn’t make any point about the rights or wrongs of either – it simply points out that both things happened.

That being said, I have always respected the office and never thought poking fun or denigrating the office or president was the right thing to do. The division in this nation is what will be our undoing. Other countries band together in unity and all we do is choose sides, point fingers and blame the other side. I actually had someone tell me in all seriousness that the conservative media were the only ones reporting the truth. I nearly spit out my drink. Someone earlier had just told me the other side was the only outlet broadcasting the truth. Same people on the opposite sides of the same damn coin. Only they can’t see it so the rest of us are fucked because of it. Kathy went way too far but unfortunately I fear we will see worse as time goes on and with lots of cosigners.

You raise some excellent points and I’ll comment in a minute but may I say, first, that any time one is wishing death ,or injury, or bringing death into the conversation while mocking someone, it must stop. And it is wrong. This has all gone way too far.

There is nothing funny about death or violence no matter what you think is right or wrong or who you prefer in anything. We should be able to agree or disagree without bringing violence into the discussion, and wishing injury, or pretending to. Whatever they will use to justify this-it is WRONG.

I think this will end Kathy’s career, and it should. People on some sides have lost all sense of boundaries, and believe they are allowed to say anything, and act any way they choose, at any time. Now they also believe others can’t do the same, but they can, because they are smarter, superior, better. Nonsense.

No one side is better than the other. Nor is any individual better than another. No matter how much they choose to believe otherwise.

I don’t know anyone who isn’t concerned and frustrated now, for many reasons. Some are well informed, some more afraid than informed, some both. We’re all threatened because to me, the most basic cause now is there are so many people not telling the truth, trying to get their side up in arms, and people are believing their lies. Many want to yell and believe if they say it the most and loudest, they’ll win the battle/be believed.
Meanwhile, the historical sources of news for many, TV and papers, can not be counted on. AS a matter of fact, we make a point, in our house, to check three sources/channels on any topic we want to be sure we understand.

What we have been dismayed to learn is that even WHAT IS TRUE is very much in question. Listen to CNN,FOX and a third channel on topics. See how consistently they cover any story, and how many times what is presented as The Truth is in fact someone’s opinion, changed into being presented as the facts subtly, or changing the interpretation of the facts and their implications, if not the facts themselves.

It’s been clearly proven that the majority of us are looking for news that agrees with our assessment of certain situations in the world, and builds on them. It is believed that we end up choosing our favorites from r those that agree with us more often. t

I hear politicians on both sides of the aisle say what they want to say, lie directly to our faces, as they push their points , their interpretations, and want us to believe only those.

I believe there is a difference between good and bad, and the truth is the truth, not someone’s interpretation of it .

The yelling needs to stop . We need facts not blowhards with microphones and half truths. We need to get back to basics, and stop attacking people.

America has many issues we can tackle that do not require revving people up with lies and half truths to the point where they threaten/joke/lie/mimic murder. Let’s aim to find more in common ,more truths we share, and less emotional hostility. We can focus collectively-ok, agree to disagree about style, but let’s make some progress, and keep our perspective.

The truth is we are blessed as a country and should find the good in it and build on it. Not pull each other and the country apart .

I agree with you Sabrina. And I believe freedom of speech in this country has gone too far. Respect for each other should be just as important. News is ruled by ratings not truth. It’s all very sad to me. But I hope for the best and do what I can. But destructive behavior helps no one. K Griffin is just nuts. Her poor judgement proves it. I cannot even comprehend how a beheading could somehow be part of anything comedic. It’s like she was agreeing with the horrible actions of isis. As disagreeable as alot of Trump’s behavior is, the left, democrats, or liberals, are proving themselves just as bad, if not worse.

I just think it’s an extremely calculated publicity stunt by two individuals of questionable talent who can only maintain their profile through controversy, and I just can’t give enough energy to that to actually feel offended. An eyeroll is about as much emotion as I can muster.

I think it has to be seen in the context of the people who burned effigies of Obama eight years ago. There were a few arrests, perhaps a few court hearings (I don’t recall), but ultimately most of us just recognized it as a stunt and ignored it. I think the suggestion she should lose her job(s) for being crass and tasteless is a giant overreaction when you consider the things Trump has said about women’s bodies – if he can talk the way he does and be President, I’m sure her poor judgment won’t get in the way of her reading a teleprompter on NYE.

It’s not like they stay in obscurity after getting fired, anyway. Celebs are like cockroaches, they keep coming back – even Billy Bush says he’s returning to TV after barely six months!

I simply felt that maybe due to my age and years I was raised, you cannot cross a certain line regarding the president. It was a unspoken rule. Freedom of speech was to always be honored, but a display to behead the president,? No, not appropriate or okay. Maybe that’s too simple perhaps? But my truth for almost 58 years. Attention maybe has become so important, rules changed. Hmm. (And yes Kathleen jimeenez, this is what terrorists do, behead)

Nugent is a vile, disgusting individual I hesitate to call human.

But “Melinda did it, and her mom didn’t have a problem with it!” kind of excuse didn’t fly with my mom when I was a kid, and it didn’t fly with me when I was a teacher. (Would catch some little asshole cheating or passing a note – they’d say “But Fred just passed a note too!”. My response was always something along the lines of “Well, that wasn’t ok either but you are the sad sack who got caught. Suck it up.”

Often the “problems I had with Obama” from the Republican side often did boil down to racism. Fuck… my good friend, a Republican, often called that shit out in person and online. He saw it, and knew quite clearly that many had issues with a Black man being in charge of the White House.

But here is the thing – because of that, I really trust his opinions and listen deeply when we talk politics and issues. I like to think he does the same. It is something we need to do on a national level. Every liberal maybe shouldn’t call for the destruction of her career, etc…. but we should be saying “It is not ok”.

I truly believe that we would be just as polarized and in a bad spot but in a different way if she was elected. However, our President is our President. I am all for freedom of speech and for everyone expressing themselves creatively in many ways. But there has got to be limitations in all things. If we all went around just doing and saying whatever the hell we wanted whenever we wanted then bedlam would be the order of the day.

This goes way to far. This isn’t funny. I don’t think it’s “art” when people stick the crucifix in the toilet and I don’t think that his is humorous. In all walks there has to be lines that we don’t cross. I wouldn’t find it funny no matter whose head this was if they were our president. You asked me one time how I would feel being interviewed based on my husbands track record. Sorry, but the words I heard her articulate were about realizing her comedy fell on deaf ears, and that it wasn’t well received. Not that she was wrong and had rethought it.

Her pale look without makeup was more of the artful craft, if you ask me- intentional , to imply she was upset about this.
She isn’t, except for how it might impact her income levels. Sorry, we saw video of her planning every aspect of this- she was part of all the planning . This was carefully thought out and she played a key role in it.
And it is wrong for anyone to think this is acceptable. As someone above said, if ISIS is doing it, we should be opposing it at every turn, That she and many of her peers are so angry and desensitized, to not realize how evil it is to implicitly threaten our president with beheading, is a reflection of how far afield we have come as a nation, and is a clear signal we need to stop or openly disagree much more often with this ugliness.

I have done a lot of stupid shit I’ve had to apologize for in my life. Most of those times I was reacting to a situation I felt hurt by and lashed out in anger. Or I just said something stupid that I didn’t realize was stupid. My mouth gets me in a lot of trouble particularly if I have been drinking.

This situation was an orchestrated plan over several days. It was not a stupid decision in the heat of the moment. That is the worst part of it for me.

Then my heart did sink – I thought of him as a dad and grandpa, his kids see this – I know they are almost all adult age, but how do you explain this to a child.

Then I remembered watching the news, and looking at terrorists killing the military. The families of that military person, the pain – this totally disrespected them. After decades of attempting to infiltrate America, our greatest enemy has succeeded by going for the very top. How anyone can waste outrage on this while our very way of life is much at stake is beyond me. If this was even 30 years ago Trump would be hanging from the capital for his treason.

OMG, the photographer was that little fucker??? i TOTALLY remember that asswipe and couldn’t believe Clint didn’t deal with that punk.

I’ve been a big Kathy fan for years. Saw her in Vegas and it was fantastic. Her insight on stuff (especially the Vegas stuff) was spot on. Love her work ethic, her care towards her mother and dogs, and her support of the troops, which was something I could point to as a liberal as a positive example of supporting the military AND being liberal (and more military people are liberal than you think…) I have laughed myself silly with her and “Andy Cooper”, and what made me cry when Joan Rivers died was KG going on Anderson’s show to talk about Joan’s impact and power as a comedian, and what Joan meant to her. Not what she said in her prepared comments, but at the end, when she was done, and her chin quivered… only to have Anderson say right before they went to commercial “You did good honey”.

But this? Kathy made a major mistake. It is up to comedians to push the boundaries, but this wasn’t helpful. It muddies the waters. I made comments above about how much of was said about Obama WAS because he is black. I won’t repeat it. But we need comedians to do that balance between doing what Johnson said about the Smothers Brothers and still respecting the office. The assassination of our president is no joke.

I have a soft spot for Kathy Griffin. When my beloved husband collapsed & died on the morning of St. Patrick’s Day 6 years ago my daughter, granddaughter & her daughters congregated at my house. We weren’t sure what to do, what we were supposed to do, but I made English muffin pizzas & we watched a Kathy Griffin marathaon. We ate, we laughed harder than we expected, & we got through the night.

I believe in free speech & in the necessity of a free press & the role of comedy in a free nation. That said, Tyler is a real sleeze who doesn’t care about hurting people. When I watched him on Mrs. Eastwood he reminded me of a marauding bachelor on Meerkat Manor who was cutting out a young mate from a decent family. He is a loose cannon & I am sorry Kathy got mixed up with him because he can only hurt her, personally & professionally. The photo did no damage to Trump–what he has done to himself & our country is beyond the pale, & he deserves more derision than what any comedian (& nutso photographer) can dish out.

Belated condolences on your husband’s passing.

I can appreciate the beauty of laughter through grief like that. The night my grandmother finally passed, I remember sitting on the couch with my grandfather, laughing at the prime time tv shows on that night.

The only problem now – I think it was the Cosby Show, dammit.

I disagree, respectfully. Some will forget, but not all. She will lose some fans. She will gain some fans. But the path her career was on is changed forever. CNN has fired her. Even Squatty Potty has cut ties with her ( and that was a brilliant marketing campaign). At this point, I am neither a fan or a hater. Her apology didn’t win me over. Nor did I think it completely insincere. I am disturbed and disappointed with her decision that led to this truly heinous lapse in good judgement, and sad at the consequences that will and are already occurring. Her mother must be struggling. Kathy is Maggie’s child, and there is truly unconditional love there, but it’s a lot for a woman in her 90s to comprehend (joke, political statement however you want to label it- it was simply wrong).
And as for being a liberal poster child- she served herself up on a silver platter….

I’m in the minority that doesn’t find it offensive. She is a shock comedian, in my opinion. She says and does things for this reaction. I doubt her career is over, considering most of her fans are definitely not Trump supporters. I do think the pic was a bit gory, but the sentiment is not lost on me.

I’m just getting caught up on all of this. TMZ is reporting a bullshit story about Baron seeing the photo on TV and freaking out. I don’t imagine that Barron was watching anything this would be on and he is smart enough to know that it wasn’t real. I do think he probably did eventually see the photo and may be traumatized but TMZ is not in the White House or wherever Milania and Barron are stored to have such a sappy description.

I also think Trumps grandkids have see it by now and that sucks.

Anderson Cooper STRONGLY condemned Kathy for the imagery.

And TMZ continues to plaster the photos all over the site. Like A LOT.

Kathy Griffin is taking a huge hit with this.

But there was something I found hilarious. Kathy had just started an ad campaign with Squatty Potty. They have pulled their ads because Kathy does not represent the core values of SQUATTY POTTY.

I mean, really? I think she is perfect for squatty potty.

I’m really shocked by her behavior but I guess equally shocked by the fact that maybe it happened and I don’t remember, but I genuinely do not recall nearly as much outrage over the gross misrepresentation of Obabama’s personal character and extremely negative responses made towards him. Many of which were made by current President Trump. I don’t condone what Kathy did but as they say Karma. The sad part is that the attacks on Obama were to someone who seems to actually be a genuinely nice person. Not that such acts are ok against jerks either but to put it in perspective you can almost understand someone being mean to a jerk but to be so cruel to Obama just because he won the Presidency and you don’t want him there in ludicrous. My point is even people like me who loathe every thing he stands for will stand up for an injustice against him but where were all the people doing that for Obama. All of out Presidents deserve respect for the office whether you like them or not. It’s a hard job we expect for them to do their best. To all the comedians, talk show hosts, actors and professional athletes you are whether you like it or not public figures and have a responsibility to your craft to act in a way that is professional. People hang on your words and actions therefore they have power.

Many military widows are reacting to this – and they are correct – why remind them of what happened to their family?

It would be too awkward to stand in front of the military now, I would be scared as well, who wants to be investigated by the Secret Service? I hope Kathy stays strong – she can’t blame anyone but herself for this and I do hope she is emotionally doing well.

Personally, I cannot understand how Kathy Griffin could not foresee her actions would appear to support sharia law/islam behaviors of beheading…There are actually several pics and one shows her ‘smugly smirking’ while holding the ‘head/mask’.
I am one who will not be giving Griffin a ‘pass’ because she didn’t just move the line and then cross it. She thought she was right in her feelings AND had more support/respect than our President. That is narcissm to the Nth degree. What she did can’t be removed from our minds/thoughts with an apology.
It’s much like Ramona Singer and Lisa Rinna telling lies and instigating. Or look what Phaedra did to Kandi Buress. Once something is ‘out there’…it can’t be taken back. No apology can ‘remove it’. The damage has been done.

Actions have consequences. Good actions/behaviors/decisions get good consequences, poor actions/behaviors/decisions get bad consequences. Sadly, it seems KG got swept up in the thinking that there is no line that cannot be crossed whether it was as a comic or making a political statement on her part. She allowed herself to be surrounded by people who encouraged her to make a really poor decision, with KG being the face of this poor decision. She will take the fall, while many other will walk away virtually unscathed. I do hope she can recover from this egregious misstep. This one moment in time should not erase the enormous body of work (no pun intended- ok, maybe a little) she has worked so damn hard to build. She is a very hard working comic, and is/was loved by many. I hope some do find forgiveness in their hearts. Second chances are deserved by everyone.

I think you are reading too much into my comment. I am pretty apathetic about Kathy Griffin; I think her actions here were quite stupid, mostly because, as others have noted, it merely gives ammunition to the Right Wing nutjob crowd. But I can’t get up in arms about it either. This is the country now. Those who were so bothered that a black guy took the White House opened the door to it. After the things Ted Nugent said and did regarding Obama and HRC, which Trump himself bent over backwards to rationalize, well, turnabout is fair play. All of this to say that I’m not really defending Kathy.

This Billie person said that Kathy was taking the military for granted. I merely noted that I didn’t see where she did that. (I mean, Kathy was wrong, but let’s keep some perspective here). She replied that (I think) it was obvious and I was stupid for not seeing it. But I’m the one bashing? Right. I asked her to make her case and explain it then. This should be easy if it’s so obvious. As of right now, she’s yet to do so.

As read it, Billie wasn’t talking about nutjobs on either end of the political spectrum here, but about our military and civilians, including journalists (Daniel Pearl was just one example) who are NOT here at home but in actual danger from terrorist nutjobs who enjoy torturing and beheading and then releasing videos of those actions. And of course families and friends back at home who live in fear and many others here who hate to see THOSE terrorists encouraged or give them images or encouragement,

OK.. that is what I think..

Thank you for your response, for me, it felt like you were expecting an explanation for an opinion. I have never understood that behavior on a blog site. Each of us will have differing opinions, yet there are some that demand explanations via verbiage.

The affect that Kathy has had – as she planned – affected each of us – whether we are in the military or not- differently.

As the military have now disassociated with Kathy, she has managed to isolate herself via her message to Trump. Being accountable is the mainstay of the public – and for some that may look different.

I don’t believe I read too much into your response, I think we each have a way of communicating and I felt your format was demanding and argumentative. That is only my interpretation and observation.

Many people are not happy until they have seen you “taken down” because they are so miserable in their own lives that they want you to be miserable as well.

Will this affect her in the short-term? yes. Will it ruin her career? no. Should it? No. Any of you who think this should destroy her career, that she has worked her entire life to build, should look at your own lives and think if you made a terrible error in judgement does that warrant destroying your career and life as well? Maybe there are just alot of perfect people on here who have never made a mistake in their lives. Anything is possible.

Personally, I tend to believe people generally learn from their mistakes and I accept their apologies and move on. I don’t accept their apologies and then bring it up 20 more times like the Housewives, I actually move on.

DW exactly! Mistakes we have ALL made them because we’re human so must we pay for them for the rest of our lives? Unless she actually beheaded him the answer is no,but she will pay a price as we all must when we fuck up royally! She’ll learn today what crossing the line cost and hopefully decide it wasn’t worth it!!!

You are def correct Rita that she will learn what the cost is of crossing that line and she certainly will think it through in the future.

I, as someone who has enjoyed her acts several times with friends will continue to enjoy the entertainment she is known for and great at in the future. The choice she made, was to me, in poor taste, but the “crime” doesn’t fit the “punishment” many wish to be inflicted on her.

Like you said, everyone of us has made mistakes. Fortunately for us, ours weren’t on a worldwide platform. : )

But if you get the gig, I’ll watch!!

On a random sidenote, I was in your city on Tuesday thinking of you (in a non stalkerish way lol) on the way home from spending Memorial weekend in FL, purposely booked a flight with a long layover there so I could have lunch with a friend who moved there recently. Traffic is as horrible as I remembered!! Everything else was great though! : )

I’m a longtime Kathy fan, AND admittedly I despise Donald Trump and all he stands for. But this is too far – bloody vengeful beheading is never acceptable. What if he was holding her head similarly?

We are fortunate to live in a country ruled by democratic law. One might not respect the person who is elected president, but one should always respect the Office of the President. Kathy failed to do that. End of story.

Not a defense of Kathy Griffin’s tone deaf stunt, but I want to know what it looks like to respect the office of the president when the man who is president doesn’t appear to have the same respect? Not trying to be argumentative – ok, maybe a little – but I keep reading that and am genuinely curious about how we are obliged to separate the office from the man in this case.

He goes low, we go high works for me.

I refuse to modify my basic respect for the office simply because there is an idiot in it. I find time better spent working with PACs that can help steer the direction of policies regardless of who the POTUS is.

Once went to DC on a high school trip of like minded students. One of my classmates was very passionate about politics (we all had a strong interest of course, but she was what we would now call an activist). She said if she saw the president, she would want to spit on him or some such nonsense.

I will never forget our teacher’s response. He didn’t get mad or threaten.

He said that he was very disappointed in her. Then went on to say that of ALL his students with an interest in politics and history, she would be the one to understand that spitting on the person would be spitting on the Office. Spitting on the office would mean spitting on and insulting every single man who has held that office, including presidents she admired and called her heroes. It would also be like spitting on the Constitution.

Thanks for your comment MarrietaMommy. Thanks to your husband for his service and I truly hope you both enjoy his retirement. You certainly deserve it. Some people see a comment and would make a remark without researching, asking a veteran what they think. Kathy also weakened our country. I hope the pentagon has her picture for target practice because I (or we) know Isis has her picture with POTUS for the next service man they capture for propaganda. Yes, she did weaken many our servicemen.

But our servicemen don’t feel like throwing up every time they have to salute a guy who said John McCain was not a war hero because he was captured? Followed by the dismissive and clueless statement “I like guys who weren’t captured”. How direspectful to every serviceman who has put their lives in jeopardy for this country and what about all the families of soldiers declared MIA? That guy got a job after making those vile statements he never apologized for…President. Give me a break with the moral outrage about Kathy disrespecting our servicemen and women. She made a bad joke and apologized. Potus is a bad joke who never apologizes. That has no liberal or conservative bias. That a fact that he stated.

Or stating that he has right to criticize gold star families because he has “sacrificed much” himself, yet when questioned what he has “sacrificed” explained how “hard” he has worked.

Right. Losing one’s life in defense of one’s country vs. working hard in the real estate/casino/tv business, totally both “sacrifices” of worthy of note.

I cannot even imagine the backlash if Pres obama, or anyone else, had ever demonstrated such disrespect for military families’ loss and sacrifice, and for the veterans themselves.

Who the hell is this draft dodging giant baby (who got medical deferments for bone spurs, yet was still able to play college sports) telling john mccain who was tortured and held captive for YEARS, that he “likes guys who didn’t get captured”????

The fucking ego on this man. I like men who aren’t cowards, how about that?

While I would not do this myself, I do see it is graphic/in poor taste, she’s a comedian and has the right to free speech. Just because I would not do it myself doesn’t mean she is wrong to do it. It’s CNN’s prerogative re: firing her, I get why they would.

But I have a very long memory, and Pres. Obama did NOTHING to deserve the racist disrespect he received all throughout by people calling him racial slurs, doubting his citizenship, stating he was a terrorist/muslim, calling his wife an ape and his daughters names, burning effigies, hanging likenesses of him by a noose, calling him the “n” word, etc. He simply was who he was and was hated for that identity.

Trump has actually said and done many things to bring about the backlash he is getting. His rhetoric is nuclear, he gives NO RESPECT yet expects it in return? I do not agree with Griffin’s bit here, but sorry buddy, you want to trash everyone and run about running your mouth with ZERO class, zero regard and zero respect? You best be prepared for someone to dish it back to you.

He has zero control over his mouth and impulses, he wants to smear mccain (a war hero) and gold star families, celebs, the media, pres obama, etc. but thinks he ought to be immune to attacks himself, justified or not?

You cannot have it both ways.

So while I do think this was a bit far, I will not feel bad for Trump because he 100% brought all of it on himself.

If he wants to be treated with respect, he ought to start giving respect and acting like he is worthy of it.

Shae, every time I hear you and others (I’m addressing you be I think we like each other) discuss first amendment rights,

” While I would not do this myself, I do see it is graphic/in poor taste, she’s a comedian and has the right to free speech. Just because I would not do it myself doesn’t mean she is wrong to do it.”

It seems to me that you are saying that people have a right to say anything they want to WITHOUT JUDGEMENT OR REPERCUSSIONS. That caps part is not in the amendment. The amendment allows freedom of speech. Just as we judge the often atrocious comments of Trump, we also judge the statements of “the resistance,” I have the right to tell my boss his breath stinks and his toupee is on crooked. But there will be repercussions.

As someone with a reckless mouth, I TRY when I think it is in my best interest not to say everything that comes into my head. I TRY to consider the consequences. If then I decide that I am willing to accept the consequence, say that my boss will fire me for poking at him, and he does, I made the choice.

In Kathy’s case the majority seems to feel that what she did was WRONG. Those people have all kinds of different reasons to feel that way. There are fans that don’t want to support her shows anymore. There are advertisers that do not want to be associated anymore. There are consequences to the choices that we make.

So while she had the right to do what she did, everyone else has the right to disassociate from her. The right to speak freely is simply that. It’s not the right to speak freely without judgement and consequences. Kathy took a gamble that most people would don their pink pussy caps and flock to see her. She bet wrongly.

Not without consequences judgment or repercussions, just legally. I mean I think we all agree unless you’re threatening someone literally you have a right to say whatever shit you want even if it is in really poor taste. But I certainly don’t think you should be immune from backlash to it because everything has a reaction and if you’re going to be bold enough to say it, you need to be able to withstand and take what comes.

Her employers certainly have the right to fire her, people certainly have the right to stop watching her and the left and the right certainly have the right to denounce her. I understand it all, I just hope she thinks it was worth it. But I don’t think she does:(

I joined in the conversations on TT because she is funny. I come here to read and laugh a little. You sound like a person that never has never traveled much, volunteered for service or you would understand that people in the service have one commander, and that is POTUS. We are trained to do things without questioning it. Now as far as what I do in my home is my business. I do not drink at all. Never really liked the feeling of being high. Now, I do help people. My area has been hit with tornadoes this month, so if my run on sentences bother you BITE ME. You want to bully me? No. You just remind me of a narrow minded person. I am not going anywhere. I will tell you, I have a life and I don’t cling or hang out on blogs. I have my opinion you can have yours, but to call me a drunk because I don’t agree with the ignorance of people like you? Not buying your defense over Kathy Griffen who is known to have lots of problems. She went too far this time. Get over me, ok? You and yor opinions of me are insignificant.

People have long memories about something as disgusting as this. I believe she has the right to make a good living . I contend, as I have many times before, that our bullshit smart phone/social media culture is going to destroy the world as we know it.

People believe the constant stream of bullshit coming at them on Facebook yet blame CNN and/or Fox for “fake news.” Kathy Griffin uses her platform to hold up a severed head in the age of terrorism. Brilliant, y’all.

Oh, and I wanted to invite that Betty lady up there that said “thank God” Kathy didn’t have children to go sit on a chainsaw. See? It’s too easy to say/read terrible shit all day long and feel SO GODDAMNED RIGHT. Ugh.

“Obama was given a chance to govern and a huge amount of support. All sides came together to wish him well and support his beginning days.” – easily the funniest thing in this thread, and I think every politician has scales on their backs, present company included.
