I’m sure you’ve all learned that the winner is Chris Blue, but don’t let that “spoiler” keep you from watching the show if you haven’t already! Whew! It was quite the concert on Tuesday night. I haven’t done the research, but I’m guessing they had more guest performers than ever before. This season has felt different than the last few, and the finale was no exception.
I don’t mean this in a bad way at all. I was discussing the finale at lunch with some friends beforehand, all who watch the show. None of us were able to pinpoint a clear winner, and none of us would be unhappy if any of those four win. Well, one felt that Aliyah would be too young to handle the pressure. But it wasn’t a commentary on her talent. In the past three seasons, it was fairly clear that Jordan, Alisan, and Sundance were the odds on favorites of all of us, and it was no surprise when they won. We all agreed that it was kind of nice to be more “in the dark”, and that while Chris might not come out the winner if going against the previous winners, collectively speaking this was the best “finale four” we’ve had in years. I don’t remember many of the other final fours of the last two seasons, but I think I will remember Lauren, Aliyah, and Jesse for sure.
THE GUEST PERFORMANCES
I don’t know if it was because they had so much talent that wanted to perform this season, or what, but they changed the format a little. It used to be that the finalists would pick some of the eliminated artists to come back and perform with them. I was sad to see this eliminated. Those have been some of my favorite Finale moments in the past, and I swear, there are some that should form a singing group and go on tour together.
Instead, they brought back the four who were eliminated last week, plus Mark Isaiah. I have no clue why they didn’t also bring back Lilli Passero, who was eliminated the same week as Mark. I would have enjoyed hearing her again. These 5 artists actually got to perform with a “pro”, just like the finalists have always done. There were some great numbers, but I prefer it to be a “perk” of being a finalist. Having said that, if you like country you need to check out Brennley Brown and Rascal Flatts singing “Yours If You Want It” from their new album. Rascal Flatts really need to consider taking Brennley on tour with them; she added a nice dimension to their music.
Gladys Knight performed with both TSoul and Vanessa Ferguson, although I didn’t care for the song they picked for her to sing with TSoul. I know I’ve been harsh on Hunter and microphone eating ways, but he gave what I think was his best performance on the show in a duet with Gwen Stefani, singing No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak”. It was great.
The BIGGEST surprise from the non finalists was Mark Isaiah. He sang with Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi, two performers from Puerto Rico. Who knew Mark could sing in Spanish??? Why am I just learning this, and WHY DIDN’T ADAM HAVE HIM SING SOMETHING IN SPANISH BEFORE? The results of the show could have been quite different, frankly, if Mark had tapped into the Latin Pop market.
Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, and Chris Stapleton all performed solos during the night as well. I told you it was like one big long concert! Miley and Jennifer were obvious choices to bring on the show, being they will be coaching next season. I think Chris Stapleton was brought on to promote his new album and because he wrote Jesse’s original song.
THE FINALISTS NON-COMPETITION PERFORMANCES
Chris, Lauren, Aliyah, and Jesse all showed why they were finalists in their “pro” performances. Full confession, I had no clue who the singer with Aliyah was, although I recognize the Scars to Your Beautiful. What a fantastic message, and it was great to see Aliyah perform so well with someone closer to her in age. Country music lovers will enjoy Lauren’s performance with Little Big Town, singing their “Better Man.” Keep in mind, it was this song where Lauren beat Brennley in the Battles! Not sure if that is shady, or means that Little Big Town appreciated Lauren’s ability and wanted to sing with her. It was great to see two former coaches come back. Adam has said multiple times on the show that Jesse reminds him of Ceelo Green, and their duet of “Shining Star” really proved Adam right! Fun performance, although I could have done without the back up dancers. My favorite performance among the finalists was certainly Chris Blue and Usher singing REM’s “Everybody Hurts”, dedicated to “anyone who may be struggling tonight” but I’m sure it was in response to Manchester. Both of their voices were MADE for that song! Or should that be that song was made for their voices? Either way, it was fantastic.
All four of the original songs made it to the top 10 on iTunes! I think it proves my statement that this was the most talented “four finalists” in recent seasons. Chris Blue and Lauren Duski also made it to the top 10 with their cover songs, which means at one point six out of ten were from The Voice! Amazing! Jesse came in fourth place, Aliyah third, and according to Carson Daly, in one of the closest competitions they’ve ever had, Chris Blue narrowly beat out Lauren Duski. His reaction was fantastic. He looked stunned, and I thought he was going to go into the ‘ugly cry’. Hell, I almost did! Alicia lost her shit too. I thought it was classy and sweet that in the middle of trying to sing his original song he stopped and gave Lauren a really long hug. She looked genuinely happy for him too. Honestly, I’m happy he won but the best part is knowing that all four of the finalists can have a great music career ahead of them. I don’t think this is the last we’ll see of Lauren or Jesse. Aliyah might change her mind, she’s only 15 and she should be a kid for a while longer!
ON TO NEXT SEASON!
I thought I’d be tired of the Voice and ready for a break, but with Miley and Jennifer as coaches, I’m looking forward to it! I like Alicia, and think she improved a lot as a coach, but she doesn’t have as much sass as Miley or Jennifer. Oh, and I think Miley is gunning for Blake! For some reason, she made him hold a bunch of balloons during her performance. She has also said that she is bringing in the “OG” as her mentor. Her Dad!!! According to some of the gossip I’ve read, Blake was a HUGE Billy Ray fan in high school and some kids called him ‘Achey Blakey’. That must have been the reason for that fairly tragic mullet Blake sported.
TT EDIT: I cannot stop crying.
