Calvin

Sorry for the delay. I wanted to watch the Scandal finale last night and my DVR just could not record all the things I wanted to and also THE CRAZY is back. I have a lot of things I need to do and the anxiety involved with keeping all my plates in the air has me just sitting down and doing nothing. Also, the world seems to be ending. Did I mention that? And yet here we go…because I love this show.

Wait. Has there always been a “Viewer Discretion Advised” warning on this show? I don’t recall ever seeing that before. They also let us know that the reunion was filmed before any of the episodes aired. So they do not know what will or will not be shown.

Soledad O’brien is the moderator. I recognize the name but had to Google to find out why. She is a journalist who has been on all the major news networks, but I probably know her from Al Jazeera English a channel that I don’t seem to have access to anymore, if it exists at all. I’d love to watch it today as Armageddon approaches if it does. Also, she’s FIFTY! Bitch can pass for thirty two!

Don said he knew Jon was part of the program because he was too pretty for jail. Jon said he suspected Don at first but based on his behavior he decided he was not.  Jessica says she pegged the other two girls from the start because they were very groomed. Michelle had a fresh pedicure. Jessica is very observant.

They show the group a bit of footage from the show. They had seen nothing. This is the first time that Calvin is show and thinking he has fooled everyone, and the evidence that he had not.  Also, I had totally forgotten about Jon’s cellmate, O’Neal. He was a total creeper.

Michelle walks us through her whole experience from anxiety to making it through. She said she kept staying in to prove her daughter wrong because she thought she could not make it through. Her first night, her cellmates played truth or dare and ran around naked.

Don is still Don. I just remembered someone sent me an email about Don saying he’s a fake.  I don’t remember exactly what the person told me and I just searched and cannot find the email but it was something about his dad never being in prison in Delaware because there are no prisons there? I don’t recall. The point was this is all an act from Don. I kind of want to believe that, but I really do think he is aggressive and anti authority so who knows. I am viewing Don with a more skeptical eye that I normally would.

They show Don and Michelle both acting out toward the COs. They both defend themselves. I’d be in solitary because my mouth gets me in a LOT of trouble. Don says he has started a program to go to inner city schools and talk to young black kids. Michelle seems to think it is not a racial issue. DID YOU SEE THE SHOW? The jails are full of black people and when a white person comes in they are often immediately suspected as being a plant? Michelle’s lack of comprehension about this is astounding. Jon say the reason that there are so many black people in jail is because they can’t afford lawyers. That may be a large part of it.  The thing I do love about this show is the conversations that come out it. We need to talk about this.  I wish this show got the kind of following that the ridiculous housewives show we all watch did here. I keep pleading with you guys to watch difficult shows like this, and that last season of American Crime.  By the way, for the few of you that watched that series with me, the show was cancelled due to poor ratings.  I’m sad about that.

OMG, they are playing such a heartbreaking montage. Nate’s girlfriend finding out he was going to do another sixty days, and my dear, sweet Mauri crying about being bullied. Michelle, and Mauri both cried. I love that Calvin reached over to Mauri to comfort her. I love Mauri and the growth we saw from her over the season. She also took a beating on Twitter and I defended her a lot.  She is such a sweet girl and she proved how strong she was getting through it all. Michelle was also very strong. Two amazing women. I love that Jessica and Michelle give Mauri support.

Mauri and Michelle were both suspected of being on the show. They had to start hanging out. Thankfully, it blew over.

They show a clip of Matt and Michelle using drugs behind bars. They all laugh about Matt being stoned out of his mind. Michelle is embarrassed and worried about what her mother will think. Matt has no regrets. Mauri seems to judge Michelle a little for her drug use inside. Michelle tries to act like she only sorta kinda did a line. Girl please. Jon says that the jail makes people who would not ordinarily do drugs become addicts.

They talk about Jon and Dashaun.  It is amazing that the both came in and left at the same time. Jon wants Dashaun to know that he does think about him and hopes he is doing well. Jon finds out that Dashaun is back in jail. Jon says he is not surprised. I’m not either, but it is still sad. Jon is a bit shaken, but he says if he was told he was not alive anymore, he would not be surprised.

It’s time to talk to Jessica, the only one who tapped out. And from what I’ve heard, she tapped out WAY earlier than the editing made it seem.  When editing made it seem like Jessica was leaving, I did not believe it. Jessica basically said she had to go home to her child. Bitch please, you knew you were leaving your child with a convicted felon when you signed up for this.

Gerson

Then they bring out Gerson he is the guy that backed out at the last minute. He is a youth minister. I hate that he is being shown in a bad light.  I totally get quitting at the last minute. It’s okay. I sort of hate how Calvin is grinning at him. He says he is a small guy, and his whole mission was to not walk that path. I do not understand all the judging going on here. Gerson is a great guy who thought he could make a difference in this way and backed out. It makes perfect sense to me. He has no regrets and thinks he made the best decision. Mauri and Calvin seem to be going in on him MAURI AND CALVIN! I am now disappointed in these two.  Mauri says she is not judging him, but she is.  The cast who apparently just this minute found out there was a ninth person are dogging the hell out of this poor man and saying he is racist because when he found out it was a predominately black jail he dropped out. WTF y’all? Cut this man some slack. Seem like Mauri and Calvin and Don are bullying Gerson to me.

I wish they had shown this sequence of Mauri transforming into a strong black woman before the Gerson nonsense.  I rooted for Mauri the entire season. I’ve defended her online, and while I still love her to pieces. her treatment of Gerson was WRONG.  Then they talk about Calvin doing whatever Too Tall told him to do.   They show a montage of Calvin acting like his complete submission to Too Tall gave him power. I love the low key shade Soledad just threw at both Calvin and Mauri  about their attacks on Gerson. She essentially asks Calvin whether it is a better role model to not go in at all, or to be taken advantage of in prison.  Calvin is still clueless at this point. Maybe after viewing all the episodes it will sink in. I suspect he will blame editing.

Conversely, Jon is shown putting Dashawn in his place over the cookie incident.

Next, the rest of the group finds out that Nate did back to back seasons. Colonel Mark says they gave Nate another psychological evaluation before they let him do that. Nate said that there were some personal reasons why he did that in addition to the fact that he’s a Marine and is built to stay the course. Nate said that he did not intentionally ingratiate himself with the bloods. Mauri actually says if she could use the phone (her phone access was limited because her mother is with someone who used to work for the jail) she would have stayed. I don’t believe her.  Nate says he didn’t see himself as a snitch, just someone trying to help fix issues with the jail system.

Calvin redeems himself by asking Colonel Mark where the hell the COs were when all the fights were happening. People are repeatedly getting beat down and no CO shows up to stop it. Mauri is shown breaking up a fight because she knows no one is coming. Colonel Mark seems to have not explanation. He says he has started doing cavity searches. STARTED?

Season Four looks even more shocking!

Have we talked about Calvin’s socks? I love Calvin.

In even more exciting news, Sheri from season one (two?)  is a CO now in the men’s ward where she was an undercover inmate. I AM ALL IN FOR THAT SHOW.

My DVR shut off before I could find out when that airs. My TV cut to CNN and the end of the world as we know it….

I am really bummed that American Crime got cancelled. I need to go to Netflix and watch season 2. I agree that more people should watch more shows like this and ACS instead of so much Bravo crap. Unfortunately it’s like that saying about leading a horse to water. This show really opens your eyes to the poor penal system and especially the really subpart medical facilities!! I found myself liking pretty much all of these people, but I do agree about the unfair judgement against the guy who backed out.

Margaret, the ONLY problem with American Crime I found was season one was fantastic, two was great, and three was good. So, if they can get it back to one level, that’s what I think would have saved it.

Hang in there TT, the army of us is behind ya 🙂 I think we should figure out a plan to get American Crime back. Have no idea how, but maybe Bravo can pick up or we can boycott housewives? Michelle was annoying me, talking and making faces to Jon while people were talking, and acting mad. Like forgetting she was in it just like the rest. Hmm.

I eat a little avocado with it and be sure to put pepper in. I read somewhere tumeric is good for depression. It couldn’t hurt to try it. Feel better!!!

Calvin and I didn’t bully anyone. THEY edited out the part where Gerson said how he didn’t want to do it because it was a black jail and blah blah. He went on to saying how he didn’t lose sleep and talked slick noise about those who went through the program.

They left in most and I repeat MOST of Calvin’s and I response.

Mauri, that was not quite my take on it either, but respect TT’s recap. I think Gerson didn’t need to be on the stage, or part of the “Reunion”. I think they should have talked to him separately. Again, good job.

Mauri…we were rooting for you, we were ALL rooting for you (Tyra Banks voice). If that was the case honey then you and Calvin should have served him with class. If that truly is the case, why were Jessica and Don quiet ? Decorum darling, there’s a way to get your point across and let the other person show their ass, not yours. Still proud of you however I was disappointed in both you and Calvin in that moment. Tell Calvin to humble thyself because he was no boss in there, had Too Tall said drop to your knees, open wide and swallow…he would’ve complied. Not everyone is built for the experience. Calvin looked dashing and you looked beautiful. If you really are Mauri. TT love you, hope you woke up to a brighter day.

As far as the reunion, I was disappointed as well the way they attacked Gerson. He did what was best for him and that should be respected. It felt like they were trying to twist his words to suit their own needs and not seeing it from his point of view as he tried to see it from theirs. I wonder how soon Jessica actually left the program? I wish they would have coughed that up at the reunion! I love Jon, Matt and Nate! When they showed the clip of him high as hell talking about the pumpkin patch I was laughing so hard! He’s adorable! Don does nothing for me. He was so negative throughout the process I don’t think he did much good.

I cant wait for the next season, this is such a great show, and it does bring up so many social issues. It doesnt look like the prison is any safer after the first 60 days, or they are addressing a whole set of problems in there now. They were a really interesting bunch, and I liked them except for Don, who seemed a little “off” to me and his constant “know what I’m saying” drove me crazy. I didnt really love the aftershow; I do not like how Soledad O’Brien moderated it, she needed to ease down a little.

I’m hoping Fulton County changes for the better and hopefully they get quality CO’s – like ones that actually give a damn. I felt bad for Gerson and absolutely get where he was coming from. The ambivalence on the part of the CO’s alone made me fearful for him and if something bad had happened to him I’m not sure it would have been worth the effort. At no time did he minimize their experience. He attempted to explain his position which the others didn’t want to seem to hear.

Nate’s lawyers have advised him not to talk about it. Just kidding…or am I? No really, I am just joking…or am I?

I understood Calvin and Mauri’s positions againt Gerson crystal clearly. Basically he would have been fine going to jail in Indiana, but he bailed when he found out that it was Atlanta. Then he said he would be an El Salvadorian going into a primarily African-American jail. That’s where the racist part came from. Then he still wanted to puff adder up instead of saying, “You’re right, in this instance you were all braver than I was.” He had every right to tap out, he didn’t have to participate, but show a little humility and for sure don’t diss people who did what you couldn’t. Don did jump in a couple of times as well, so it wasn’t just Calvin and Mauri who were offended.

IMO, Gerson didn’t diss anyone and said nothing to disbarage anyone else’s experience. He felt due to his race and I feel more his stature, his safety would be in jeopardy. I’m from the ATL and know a whole lot about the whole DOC system down there. Horrifying to say the absolute least. He did what was right for him. Personally I was pleased with his choice and was fearful for him. Think whatever you may about me but that’s where I stand.
