### The lottery formula

What kind of formula does our calculator use? It finds the lottery odds according to the following equation:

where:

- — Number of balls in the pool;
- — Number of balls to be drawn;
- — Expected number of matches;
- — Number of combinations (in how many ways you can choose out of numbers?); and
- and — Number of combinations to choose out of and out of respectively.

For example, in a typical Lotto game, where you choose **6 numbers out of 59**, the chance of winning the jackpot (matching all six numbers) is 1 in 45,057,474. That means that statistically, you would have to **play over 45 million times** to win just once. Chances for matching five numbers are bigger, but also not too optimistic — 1 to 141,690. On the other hand, the odds for matching three numbers are 1 to 96 — a bit over 1%. It means that matching three numbers is fairly common. Too bad it doesn't really pay off…

### Bonus balls

Some lotteries include a **bonus ball** that is drawn after the initial balls. Our calculator allows you to take into consideration two types of bonus balls:

**Bonus balls taken from the remaining pool**. In this case, an additional ball is chosen from the pool to give players who hit all but one number a chance for a better prize. For example, in a game where you pick 6 numbers of 59, a seventh ball is randomly selected. Let's assume that you matched 5 out of 6 numbers. Our calculator tells you what are the odds of the sixth number you chose being on the bonus ball.**Number of matches**is set by default to**m-1**. That means that if you initially wanted to match 6 balls, the lottery calculator will find the odds of matching 5 balls**and**a bonus ball.

**Bonus balls taken from a bonus pool.**In this case, bonus balls are randomly picked from a separate pool. That means that one number can come up twice. Our lottery odds calculator finds what are the chances of you getting**m**matches and picking a bonus ball number. For example, if you want to hit the jackpot (6 matches out of 6 numbers), this calculator will find the odds of matching six numbers**and**a bonus ball.**Balls to be drawn**— Number of balls drawn from the bonus pool.**Matches with bonus pool**— How many numbers from your lottery ticket should come up in the bonus pool?**Balls in the bonus pool**— Total number of balls in the bonus pool. It can, but does not have to, be equal to the number of balls in the initial pool.

Does this mean geometric and consecutive counting patterns are effective to use? These non-random combinations win in lotteries, but hardly ever. There are just so many draws or opportunities that pave the way for these rare events to happen, as the law of truly large numbers claims.

It means that these improbable combinations might win, but are highly unlikely. Hence, choosing these patterns will only lead to a waste of your time and money. To play lotteries mathematically to have better chances of winning, you must embrace the law of large numbers.

Through this law, you understand that although all numbers have equal chances of getting picked from a drum. There are no lucky or unlucky, hot or cold numbers in a lottery game. Yet, you will understand through this law that there are certain combinations that are more favorable to use than the others.

**The Advantage That The Best Combinatorial Patterns Offer**

Paying attention to the combinatorial pattern of a combination will let you play advantageously.

Suppose you feel inspired to use 3-9-15-21-27 to play Mass Cash.

3-9-15-21-27 has the 3-low-2 high pattern, which offers only a good ratio of success to failure.

The most advantageous combinations to buy have the best odd-even and low-high ratios. Therefore, 3-9-15-21-27 is an example of an improbable combination you could do better without.

In 6/49, the low numbers are {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25} and the high numbers are {26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43,44,45,46,47,48,49}.

1-2-3-4-5-6 may have the best odd-even ratio, but it has the worst low-high ratio.

8-16-20-38-42-48 has 3 low and 3 high numbers. So, it also has the best low-high ratio despite having the worst odd-even ratio.

Both examples have contradicting ratios, so they would only be a waste of money. Perform the basic combinatorial analysis for each new combination you think of. Only stop when a combination has both odd-even and low-high ratios.

**Ratios Of Success To Failure From Basic Combinatorial Analysis**

Basic combinatorial analysis examines the odd-even and low-high ratio of combinations.

In our example game, 6/46, the number sets are

Odd = {1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23,25,27,29,31,33,35,37,39,41,43,45},

Even = {2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,32,34,36,38,40,42,44,46},

Low = {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23}, and

High = {24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43,44,45,46}

For example, 1-2-3-4-5-6 has the best ratio of success to failure. From the 7 odd-even combinatorial groups, 3-odd-3-even has the best ratio of success to failure. It has 3,136,441 ways to win and ways to fail. Its ratio of 1 to 2 is 46 times more favorable than the 6-even or 6-odd pattern.

In 100 draws, the 6-odd or 6-even combination will give only one winning shot. A 3-odd-3-even combination could offer 32 more opportunities to match the winning combination.

You should not forget that basic combinatorial analysis also involves low-high ratio.

Looking at this table below, you see that 1-2-3-4-5-6 has the worst ratio of success to failure. With 100,947 ways to win and 9,265,872 ways to fail, you need 93 attempts to get one winning shot.

**Ratios Of Success To Failure From Basic Combinatorial Analysis**

Unfavorable and contradicting ratios suggest you should pick another combination and redo the basic combinatorial analysis. I might be preferable to just use a tool like Lotterycodex calculators.

You will know the best, good, bad and worst combinations, but you’d certainly focus on the best ones.

The best combinations have the best Lotterycodex patterns and offer the most winning opportunities and least chances of losing.

Most people play Mega Millions and Powerball instead of other games because of their huge prizes.

However, is the prize the only factor of importance when you want to play successfully?

**Prize Vs Probability**

You must decide well between a big lottery game and a small lottery game based on your personal preferences.

Can a game’s jackpot prize bring substantial changes in your life if you ever win? The jackpot from a big game probably will. Yet, is the chance of winning in this big game better than in a small game? The probability of winning may differ in every game since a lottery game has its finite set of characteristics.

Based on the advertised jackpot prizes as of 11:38 PM Saturday, 15 May 2021 (GMT-4) Mega Millions has a 4,255 times bigger jackpot than Ca$h 5. People often play Mega Millions and Powerball because they have large jackpot prizes. Yet, they also set aside that smaller games could offer better chances of winning.

Some games are luckier to play than the others. For example, Northstar Cash is said to be the luckiest to play among the other Minnesota Lottery games. Northstar Cash offers the most favorable winning probability. Same analogy applies to Hoosier Lottery games. The probability formula below would be useful.

For Ca$h5, the probability of winning from every combination is 1 in 1,221,759.

This is 8 times better than the winning probability of 1 in 9,366,819 of every combination in Lotto +Plus.

Compared with Cash4Life, Ca$h 5 has 18 times better winning chances from every combination.

Each combination in Powerball offers the winning probability of 1 in 292,201,338. Thus, Ca$h 5 offers 239 better winning chances.

But despite its randomness, it follows the dictate of probability. Indeed, this total randomness is a requirement to make all probability calculations correct. If something is disturbing the randomness of the lottery, any probability calculation won’t make any sense.

The law of large numbers or LLN shows the proof that the results of the actual lottery draws are subordinate to the principle of probability.
