Producer and host Carson Daly used his daytime job at the Today Show yesterday to announce that Jennifer Hudson will be in the fourth coach’s chair in Season 13 of The Voice!
Jennifer is moving her coach’s chair from the UK to the US, and joining Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and returning coach Miley Cyrus this fall. Last week it was announced that Alicia Keys would not be returning so she can finish her next album. Alicia said she wasn’t ruling out future seasons; Blake Shelton thinks she won’t be able to resist it!
While I will miss the Miley/Alicia dynamic, it will be VERY interesting to see Jennifer’s coaching style. She just finished up her first season coaching The Voice UK on April 2nd, beating out seasoned veterans will.i.am and Sir Tom Jones for the top prize.
Jennifer appeared on American Idol in 2004, and is one of the most famous and successful of the “non-winners” of that show, along with Adam Lambert. She also has one Oscar and two Emmys, which is more than most of the winners can say! I believe that the fact that Jennifer was once on the “other side” as a contestant herself gives her an edge over the other coaches. It may also give The Voice an edge over the returning American Idol set to reappear on our TVs in 2018. No word yet if Ryan has signed a contract to return as host.
The Voice runs two seasons per year. Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus join Blake and Adam for the fall season of this year.
After Erica submitted this piece on Jennifer Hudson joining The Voice season 13, Kelly Clarkston was announced as a judge for the Spring 2018 season 14. Kelly was rumored to be in talks to be a judge on American Idol next season. It looks like The Voice is going all in to run American Idol right back off the air. This will be a crushing blow to ABC who is expected to announce the return of Idol in just a few days at upfronts. Kelly has previously performed on The Voice, and been a mentor.
Edited to add a sample of J-Hud’s coaching.
