Can you feel some extra glamour in the air? Are you reconnecting with your charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent? That’s because RuPaul’s Drag Race is back! And they’re moving up to the big leagues. That’s right. After testing out the waters during All Stars, Drag Race is officially moving to Logo’s sister channel VH1. That means we finally get to watch in HD. High definition drag queens? Yes, please. So don’t forget to readjust your DVR. Lady Gaga is season 9’s first guest judge and she pulls a prank on the queens that is sure to make herstory. You don’t want to miss it!
The season 9 cast looks pretty promising. Aja, 22, hails from Brooklyn, NY, home of a vibrant drag community and last season fan favorite Thorgy Thor. She took her name from a Bollywood film and it’s fitting. She is a burst of vibrant colors. She promises that she has no filter when it comes to her opinions. Kind of reminds me of season 7 winner Violet Chachki. I wonder if the self-proclaimed Judy Jetson hooker has the chops to follow in her footsteps…
Alexis Michelle, 33, is New York City’s premiere Broadway queen. She can lip-sync but she also has some strong pipes. She’s been trying to get on Drag Race since season 2 so you know she’s going to take the competition seriously. I mostly know Alexis from her amazing So You Think You Can Drag Into The Woods performance. Talk about a transformation! Hopefully we’ll see some amazing performances from Alexis.
Charlie Hides, 52, is the oldest contestant in Drag Race herstory. She splits her time between the US and the UK so she has a bit of a bicontinental accent (which is adorable, unlike Dorit Kemsley’s). Charlie has a huge following on Youtube impersonating celebrities. Cher calls her her “favourite Cher impersonator” which must drive Chad Michaels crazy. You might have seen Charlie making a cameo (as a drag queen, naturally) in the Absolutely Fabulous movie.
Eureka O’Hara, 25, is a Southern belle from Tennessee. She’s a pageant queen and a big girl but she doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed for either. She’s a fierce competitor and dancer. I don’t know much about Eureka so I’ll be discovering her alongside the rest of you.
Farrah Moan, 22, is my season 9 crush. She’s a fishy, fishy, fishy Vegas showgirl. She’s also a burlesque queen. Lots of feathers and silk. I think of her as a mix of Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page, all wrapped up in pink latex. Now, initial instincts can be misleading so I’m curious to see how Farrah fares on Drag Race. But I’m rooting for her. She better not make me go all Tyra on her ass.
Jaymes Mansfield, 26, intrigues me. She cites Pee Wee Herman, Elvira and namesake Jayne Mansfield as inspirations. She’s quirky, to say the least. I hope we get to see some of her puppetry on the show.
Kimora Blac, 27, wants to be a Kardashian. And just like them, she’s quite proud of her fake booty. Kimora is a Vegas queen and a self-styled bougie Barbie. She seems genuinely grateful to be a part of Drag Race so I imagine she’s going to fight hard to win.
Nina Bo’nina Brown, 34, marches to the beat of her own drum. She’s a fantasy cosplay queen to the extreme but she doesn’t let that get in the way of looking sexy. She has a strong personality that could cause problems in the workroom. Nina has already stirred up controversy by performing in monkey makeup at the Drag Race premiere party. I hope she makes it farther than Dax Exclamationpoint.
Peppermint, 37, is classy, sassy and polished. She’s been a fixture on the NYC drag scene for years. She even made a Lady Gaga parody with the iconic Sherry Vine. Much like TamaraTattles.com favorite Erika Jayne, Peppermint is known for always traveling with an entourage of backup dancers. She’ll have to adjust to performing solo on Drag Race but she’s not skirred. Peppermint hopes to be the first transgender winner of the show.
Sasha Velour, 29, is the thinking-man’s drag queen. Her work is closer to performance art than traditional drag. She’s a phenomenal talent and I think I love her. I just hope she’s not too weird for TV. It doesn’t hurt that her big, bald head reminds me of AHS Hotel’s Elizabeth Taylor…
Shea Couleé, 27, is from Chicago, bitch. She’s inspired by Naomi Campbell but she’s no Naomi Smalls knock-off. She loves fashion and she’s a fierce performer. I’d be scared to lip-sync for my life against Shea.
Trinity Taylor, 31, is a former Miss Pulse and performed at the nightclub one week before the massacre. She’s a pageant queen and girl loves her some plastic surgery. I give her extra credit for including Erika Jayne’s Xxpen$ive in her season 9 premiere party performance.
Valentina, 25, hails from Echo Park in East LA. She’s a drag newbie (10 months and counting) and she must be good to be cast on the show so quickly. She chose her name because it sounded like a character form an Almodovar film or a telenovela. She’s a little cutie but I think she has more substance than we’d expect.
Color me excited. I’ll be recapping every week, right here at TamaraTattles.com, but you need to see all of the gorgeousness for yourself. Just be sure to come back and comment. I think we’re going to have a lot to talk about!
