I love this show. At first I thought it was the best show on Bravo. I still do but now I sort of wish it was on a major network. I really would not be recapping or discussing it except for the fact I want to get it all the free publicity I can, because from my experience, good shows don’t last on Bravo. This show would be huge on a station with a different kind of audience.
I was thinking today that Patrick, Maddie’s love interest is well, an Imposter. I’m thinking he is doing to her what she is doing to everyone else. I think he is out for revenge just like the crazy, goofy, trio of past victims. Only he’s not as gullible as her former victims.
We pick up where we left off last week. Sally has murdered the latest mark, Gary Keller and Maddie is stuck with the cleanup after Sally leaves with the money. Max arrives and Lenny shortly behind him. Apparently Lenny (Uma Thurman) is the official cleaner. This is Maddie’s first dead body and she seems to be fairly nonchalant about it. Lenny walks up the alley with a little boy out at night in a superhero costume carrying a hammer of justice. He is patrolling the alley to keep the bad guys aways. First, he must identify the bad guys so he asks Lenny if she’s a bad guy. Lenny gives the boy a morality lesson by asking him if sharks are good or bad. The point is, perception is everything.

Lenny’s assessment of the bloody body? “Ouch. I can see why you didn’t want to fuck the guy.” I love this show.
Meanwhile, the trio of victims (TOV) are perfecting their own con artist skills. I love how they are playing with the concepts of good and evil and how the circumstances of the situation sway our beliefs. It reminds me of a situation where a group of people claimed righteousness in online trolling. It’s a very interesting concept to study. Anyway the TOV have made a poster that says “Beware of Pickpockets” which of course causes all who pass to check their wallets to make sure they still have them. The TOV watches each person and now knows where they keep their cash. Then they photograph the people using their ATM. They also hustle women out of their receipts for major purchase then walk in the store and pick one up and return it. They are becoming really good criminals and liars. But you know, the good kind. At least that is what they keep telling themselves.
Meanwhile, the imposters are furiously scrubbing the crime scene. Amateurs. Mr. Kaplan from The Blacklist would already be done by now. Max and Maddie try to cover for Sally but Lenny is too smart for that.
Inbar Lavi (Maddie) is so fucking good with her characters, when you combine that with the fact that I have crappy facial recognition, it took me quite awhile into the bar scene to realize she is the hipster bartender who has already moved on to her next mark, another brunette female. I hope she doesn’t join up with the TOV because I just gave them an acronym, dammit! It appears the new mark’s name is Jules and she is an artist. I don’t get how this works because Maddie is going to need to stay in Seattle for Patrick to hustle her. He’s a headliner on the show. Oh hell, I really don’t have any facial recognition skills. Jules is the ex wife of the TOV. This is why I don’t recap scripted shows. I have a hard time following along. This is a flashback. Wrong again. It was a daydream. At the end of it the two boys stole away Maddie. She tells the boys they need a “Maddie Code.” You see, these morons started off just doing crap all willy nilly. So the boys decided they needed and ethics code on how far they were willing to go morally to exact revenge. The longer they are together the more rules they seem to need. Now Jules wants some agreement about what to do when they finally get to Maddie. You see, they are all still in love with her despite their quest for revenge. They all agree to a lot of rules about their anticipated upcoming interaction. All three of them are lying to each other. And themselves.

Max is busy tracking down Sally who freaked out after killing Keller and ran off with the money. He finally finds her at the train station. Sally didn’t know that Keller was skimming money from “the doctor.” Max knew but didn’t tell her. She says if he turns her in they will kill her. Sally wants to take the money and run for their lives. He decides to go for it and they take off to start a new life. They’ll rent a car and hid the $300K in the spare tire like they did in Sarasota. They are ready to retire. Later we get a flashback to when they first took the gig. Max tells Sally he doesn’t know who the doctor is. Sally was skeptical but they went for it anyway. They had a year to get out unscathed. Clearly they went much longer than that.
Finally we see the incredibly dreamy Patrick (Steven Bishop). Maddie needs some post homicide cleanup sex. My GAWD this man is hawt. During the post-coital afterglow, Patrick remarks on her anklet. She tells him it was a gift from a previous lover. She couldn’t get the clasp off and she just got used to wearing it. It’s a gift from Ezra. During the Maddie Code meeting Jules and Richard felt like Maddie’s persona with Erza was the closest to being real because Maddie was in French club in high school and she pretended to be Belgian with him. I think she may have liked him best too because they showed him first on the show. Patrick opens the clasp and tells her now she can move on.
Sally and Max were staying on a boat they had taken as their own on the docks. As they set out to their happy retirement on the beach, the walked down the docks right into Lenny who was there to intercept them. As it turns out, Max who was reliving all of his happy times with Sally moments earlier had turned her in after all. She dead. Lenny tells Max, ” Chin up Max! It’s better to be sad than dead.”
When Maddie makes the morning walk of shame out of Patrick’s house, Max is there waiting for her. Oh, this is not good. Well I didn’t expect this. Patrick is the next target. Only this time Maddie has a big case of feelings for him. And if she doesn’t fleece him, then Lenny is going to kill them both. Maddie begins to realize that Sally is dead. She also knows Max loved her and couldn’t save her. She’s in way over her head now. With Patrick and The Doctor. Max tells her he will see her at work at the bank. When Max arrives the FBI is there investigating. Lenny has tipped them off that Heller embezzled a ton of money and used it to by a Russian bride and has disappeared.
We see Maddie, not at work but at a diner. A man approaches and asks “Tu n’as pas faim?” and she replies “Pas maintenant.” HOLY FUCK! It’s Ezra! And Richard! And Jules!
God I love this show!
I love this show!!!
I really hope this show is getting a good audience for Bravo to keep it. I’m not sure it would really get a good shot on network tv because the only real appointment tv on network right now is This Is Us. But this show is forking amazing. Uma is amazeballs and her speech with the kid was acted perfectly. Maddie is screwed 6 ways to Sunday. Her prints are all over the file and magazine the Doctor sent and Feds are going to find it. Especially since she’ll ave to stay there since Patrick is the new mark. I love that the TOV showed up but I’m so disappointed in Max and sad Sally is probably dead. I still think Patrick is in on it or a Fed or something. I just know he knows….
I agree of the TOV Maddie liked Ezra the best. Damn I love this show. I want to know wgpho the Doctor is. That will be super interesting to find out.
I violated my own Twitter rule last night and Tweeted the entire cast links to the recaps and begged them to RT them so that we can get the ratings up as high as possible. I really, really love this show.
Thank you for the recap! ❤
I love this show and am so glad you are recapping it. I can’t wait until On Demand has it up so I can rewatch it 7 times LOL! It also airs on USA after the original broadcast. Great recap and thank you TT for adding this show to your list! I know you’re already swamped with shows to recap but I’m glad you picked this one.
Grrrr! Can’t read the recap as I haven’t watched yet. Why is it so hard for me to remember it’s on Tuesday nights?
Hurry up and watch,PJ!
Actually, the bar scene was a flashback. Jules is the female in the TOV. That scene was how they met, which was why Jules wanted to write a new “code” so none of them had any alone time to rekindle anything with Maddie.
It wasn’t an actual flashback. It Jules remembering Maddie and how they met and at the end Erza and Richard dance away with her. Erza and Richard were not really there when they met. It seemed like a flashback until the guys showed up in the scene.
Yep. You’re right.
I have no idea where this show is going. That’s a good thing. I’m loving it.
Love the Mr. Kaplan comparison. yes.. i am really enjoying this show!
I love that you get the Mr. Kaplan comparison. You are now tasked with helping me push the group toward things less brainrotty.
I absolutely LOVE THIS SHOW.
Loved the way the Jules scene in the bar was set up to keep us wondering about context all the time, as it moved so much. They keep us questioning every thirty seconds-where are we, what is this, who is this, . from Patrick picking up Maddie to finding Sale to turning Sallie over to Uma. I kept thinking, is she just going to drive away with her to her death? This just after she had adjusted her plans to accommodate his arrival ate station. Suddenly she was back where they met, and even though she planned to leave without him, he knew it then would be with him. So did she really think she was off scott free with him, or was she just hoping that was the case? The latter, of course-and reality of her upcoming death fell on her one moment at a time as she looked into the trunk, saw the bags with body parts ,and put the money in .
l LOVED the Ezra anklet , his removal of it, and the fact that we are finally seeing the real Maddie under all the deception. We’ve had weeks to speculate about how she recreated her new characters and lived each life each day. It was clear that she lives each life about two months or so- one til they are married, and one after they are married for her to be able to gain access to all the assets.
Clearly the missing “Doctor” has a lot on each of them, so they are deeply deeply hooked-Maddie most of all- but they played along a very long time to give him the info.
The upcoming scenes suggesting she begs the TOV to keep her alive by dropping their issues and helping her, look amazing- and as they each betray each other, it is going to be fascinating.
How does she go from lovingly living with victims to being prepared to bury them/leave them?
Well written, acted and presented. Cant wait- and I hope to re watch each one-to enjoy them again. The bar scene with Jules was fascinating to see how she gets her hooks in, how she lures one step at a time.
TT so very glad you are re-capping and so glad you let the actors know.
TT wish I was worthy to ASSUME helping others to get the fun!
Thank you for recapping this!!! I LOVE this show and I haven’t been able to find a site to talk about how great it is. I am also trying to spread the word on this show-no one seems to know about it and i’m afraid it will be cancelled.
Can’t wait until next week!!!
Thanks for helping spread the word. I’m obsessed.
Besides my housewives, I am so excited you recaps this & Feud! Seems every show I love, you do too. Hilarious about Mr Kaplan, after all she is the best cleaner on TV. Question is, where is Kaplan? Sorry, wrong show, lol. Thanks TT for all the great recaps!
