When the trailer for the new season of Dr. Phil was released, he had several interviews with people related to legal cases I follow, so I did a series recording. I often play them in the background while working on posts. Yesterday he interviewed David Cassidy. I opted not to watch several times, and then a bit ago I decided to see just how depressing it was. Then I thought about posting about it and opted not to. Then I changed my mind because I want to know what your reactions to the show were.
If you’ve been reading the headlines the last few years, you know that times have been rough for the former teen idol. He’s gone bankrupt, he’s gotten in trouble with the law, he’s gotten DUIs and he has lost his license for many years.
He recently announced after a disastrous concert where he forgot the lyrics, rambled on and on like me on Twitter after a bottle of Merlot, and fell down a few times, that he has dementia.
I was feeling some kinda way about Dr. Phil trotting the clearly ill 66-year-old Cassidy out on his stage until David makes it clear that he reached out to Dr. Phil. Can you believe David Cassidy is 66? How is that even possible?
In a nutshell, it is clear that David is in denial about his drinking. He looks really awful. The dementia is real though. At first I thought it was a way to cover up his drinking. His mother died from dementia. I didn’t even know that was a possible thing to die from. Perhaps she just had it really bad when she died. His grandfather also had dementia. It’s also worth noting that his father was an alcoholic. He’s in bad shape. He seems to have no real support system. He has one son that he sees and one daughter that he has pretty much always been estranged from. He lives alone. He was his mother’s only living relative when she became ill and was her caregiver. The more he talked the sadder the story became.
Dr. Phil offered him all sorts of medical help including the dual diagnostic rehab center. It’s unclear if he accepted any of the help. Perhaps there will be an update.
Do you guys watch any daytime talk shows? I used to love Ellen. I have no idea why I stopped watching. That is usually an uplifting show.
Now I am watching an interview with the frat boy from FSU who murdered a couple and attempted to eat the face of one of the victims. Yikes. I have never heard of this. I can’t seem to turn the channel.
