Project Runway Junior: The Last Hurrah

February 10, 2017 by tamaratattles 43 Comments

By CJ Bomb (and Leslie!)

Wow, so here we are at the last regular challenge. Having never watched this show before I thought we would have at least one more to go, but apparently there will be two designers going home this week and FOUR designers going on to show collections. Now I have held my tongue about those of you who are sick of the crying when someone gets eliminated, but I remind you A. These are KIDS and B. they are working and being creative under conditions and time constraints that would break adults. I would be rocking back and forth in a closet at this point. They don’t get a rest between challenges and so far they haven’t even gotten two days for something. Perhaps today will be the day?

Perhaps not. The runway is awash in graffiti. Tim tells the designers he loves the freedom these NYC graffiti artists have to express themselves. The designers are to create a high fashion editorial look that will stand out in front of this “sea of color”. Aya is there to explain that an editorial look should be both over the top and forward thinking. They have $350 and one day (sigh, of course) to complete the challenge. The button bag comes out and each designer is assigned a work of art. The winner of this challenge gets their look featured in Seventeen Magazine which Chris points out is a REAL prize. Anyone can pay to go to Italy, but you can’t pay to get your looks in a magazine. (Hear that Kanye?)

Tieler

Tieler gets a piece called “Passionfruit” and is very excited. I know he is excited because he is talking too fast and I can’t figure out what his plan is. Chelsea gets “NYC Neon” and is also happy. She assures us she’s got this. We have no doubt Chelsea, as this is right up your alley. Izzy gets a piece called “Iridescent Hue” and she is grooving on the negative space and sharp shapes next to the softer colors. Hawwaa gets “Seventeen Make It Work” she is happy because she can do whatever she wants against the text of the graffitti. Chris gets “Magic Love”. Les texts: of course he does. Chris wouldn’t like the girl in his painting if she were real, but is happy to use her as an inspiration for his look. Molly gets “Wild Style Paradise” and I am getting the FORESHADOWING feeling as Molly is worried about this challenge because color isn’t her “thing”.

Ok, how low rent is this? Mood is closed, but the designers are going to DIY their shopping and Tim is going to check them out. Stacey Bendet did a capsule collection for her alice + olivia brand inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Half of those proceeds went to the CFDA for developing young talent. This reminds Les and I of that project and we LOVE this challenge. It’s the most original thing we have seen in awhile on a Project Runway. Basquiat also happens to be one of my favorite artists. If you don’t like this type of art, flip the channel to QVC and I’m sure you will find something more to your liking. Sorry, feeling a little feisty tonight. For the rest you adventurous souls, onward! Tim loves the store megaphone, but is having issues with the register. First time I’ve ever seen Tim flustered. Chris complains that is the worst service he’s ever gotten at Mood.

Awesome Tieler is still talking too fast but he is designing a look to pop against his background. He is determined to come back strong after last week’s boobie disaster. Chelsea is inspired by the background of her piece. It reminds her of a galaxy, and New York City is where they make stars! Leslie comments that these kids are so talented it’s crazy. Molly is going to try and bring out her edginess with a romper with a skirt overlay. I text Les that overlay is the new applique and then a lightbulb goes off in my head. HEY BROTHER PEOPLE!!! IF you want to see these designers use that Dream Machine you keep hawking, perhaps you should tell the producers to GIVE THEM MORE TIME! Les thinks my idea is brilliant and I pat myself on the back. Hawwaa is doing a multiple piece outfit that has cut-outs sewn together to resemble the graffitti. I like the sketch and hope she can pull it off. Molly is loudly banging grommets into her outfit and everyone hates her. Chelsea has bitten off more than she can chew. She was going to make a textile with all the different leathers she bought, but decides to start over and begins cutting out stars. Izzy thinks it’s a mistake and makes a comment about how young Chelsea is. Chelsea is 14. You are 16. Have a seat, sprout.

Hawwaa

Tim’s Critique

Hawaaa has used tulle as a sheer undershirt for her crop top and Tim thinks she should use it elsewhere. She decides to take his advice. Chelsea’s outfit makes Tim smile. It makes Les and I smile too. She was right to start over. He tells her to add more stars to the back. She happily complies. Chris’s prints are doing the talking for his outfit, but Tim tells him to clean up his construction. Tim thinks the symmetry of the front of Izzy’s dress is not working with the asymmetry of the back. She thought it would be “surprising” but wisely decides to listen to Tim. Tim is worried about the lack of color in Molly’s outfit, but Molly tells him that’s not who she is. It will be edgy but not colorful. Tim doesn’t seem convinced but tells her to keep it “rough and ready”. I’m not sure what that means, but I’m worried for Molly. I just noticed that Tieler calls Tim “Mr. Tim”. Tim is worried his outfit is too bland. Tieler is convinced he is doing the right thing and loves his look, but after Tim’s critique he feels “lost”. Uh oh.

Izzy finally sees what Tim was talking about and lines up the front and back. It looks much better. Hawwaa is adding tulle to her skirt. Chris is having side boob issues and my man Tieler? Tieler is really worrying me. Les texts, what is going ON with his fit issues? Tieler is having camel problems, if you get my drift. I pour a glass of wine and will him to get it together. Tieler is doing everything he can, but this is not going well.

Izzy

The Runway

The models will be walking the runway and then the judges will also see a shot of the model in front of the designer’s assigned artwork. This is interesting because it shows how something works in real life as well as in print. The form and the action, if you will.

For the record, I do not hate Izzy. My inner goth chick is annoyed by her from time to time, but there is NO hate there. Les says she wants this for her next prom. I am writing flamenco prom as she is texting me this. It’s not my personal cup of tea, but it does look dramatic in the photo.

Hawwaa’s look says street fashionista to Les. It’s a cute look and looks good in front of the art, but I feel like we have seen a variation of this from Hawwaa over and over again.

Les writes for Molly: Molly sort of diabolical. Goth. And yes, it keeps going. 3D look like her mural. Very cool. It’s a simple A-line dress with a cape, but wait! It’s a simple romper with a cape too! Super Goth! The cape looks cool in front of the mural but I can’t see any of those details she painstakingly worked on.

Chris’s outfit comes out and Kelly says WOW. I say WOW. Les types, Mrs Rocky, badass in a good way. This is Rocky’s badass little sister. Works perfectly with the art.

Chris

Oh Tieler. Les writes: adult version of a classic southern girl in longalls. But not done well. Ugh!!!!! I write one word. Camel. Tieler knows he’s done and seems resigned. It does pop against his art though.

Les thinks Chelsea’s is too costumey. Yet she sees Lady Gaga all over this tomorrow morning. I think it’s FABULOUS. Love the shoulders, love the stars, love the pic in front of the art…love it all. It’s walking graffiti.

Leslies top picks are Chris and Chelsea with Chelsea to win and her bottom two are Tieler and Hawwaa to go home. Sadly, I have the same picks. What bums me out is that I have no desire to see a collection from Hawwaa or Molly, not that I don’t think they are wonderful and talented, but I would have loved to see what interesting things Tieler could do.

The Judging

The judges think Izzy’s outfit is great. Kelly likes the juxtaposition of its hard and flowy elements. Aya thinks it is youthful and fun, but there is a fashion element to it. Christian is not sure she needed the last two layers of the skirt.

Chelsea

Christian thinks Chelsea’s look is believable but different. He loves it. Aya thinks it’s crafty, but in an awesome patchwork quilt way. Kelly says she killed it and Hannah wants to wear it.

Christian tells Tieler his fabric choice got the best of him and there were way too many fit issues. Aya thought it was a super cute idea. Kelly says she gets it when she looks at it in front of the mural.

Aya tells Chris that athleisure is so NOW and this works. (I hate athleisure) Kelly says Love. Want. Need. Christian thought it was a little pyjama-y, but that it what Kelly loves about it.

Aya tells Molly that she wanted a punchy color. Kelly appreciates the details but points out you can’t see them. Hannah says the smartest thing she has said all season which is: if you are going to have a “reveal”, you’d better be revealing something incredible. Christian loves a good cape, but for Seventeen the outfit doesn’t make sense.

Kelly thinks Hawwaa’s look is young and fresh and Aya likes how she used the sheer elements, but Christian is bored. He would have like her to push the silhouette more.

Chelsea is going to Italy AND going to be in Seventeen magazine! She is also going to the finale with Chris and Izzy (who looks like she just swallowed a lemon). They are thrilled to be in the finale, though. They will have five weeks and $4000 to complete a collection.

Molly is going home. Molly cries. When we recap the regular season please snark and bitch away, I will do it with you. If you need to bitch about the crying here, please do it somewhere else. Tieler hugs her. He’s not crying, he still seems resigned….BUT WAIT. The judges cannot decide between Tieler and Hawwaa. Like Les and I, they want to see more of what Tieler can do. They also seem concerned that Hawwaa is one note and want to give her the chance to prove otherwise. So BOTH designers get to design a collection, but only ONE will get to show. Selfishly I am very happy about this. I would have thought it would have been Molly and Tieler, but the judges think she is only capable of designing for herself at this point. Didn’t Erin JUST WIN based on that? I’m happy but confused.

Join Les and I next week for the tie-breaking decision and the finale of this wonderful show. Have an awesome weekend everyone!

This challenge was Hawwaa’s to win. I mean come on, everything she does seems to be graffiti inspired. She needed to go full out Haawaa this week. Instead she gave us the same old stuff she does every week. I liked her work at first, but it’s the same concept with different fabrics week after week. Haawaa is also Kelly Osborne ‘s clear favorite. She was fighting hard to send Tieler home. I don’t think Kelly and Christian are BFFs. They don’t seem overly fond of each other to me. I like Kelly on this show, but not in general. It’s clear she loves the kids. It’s weird to me that I can like her on this show. Kind of like how I like Porsha on The Apprentice but can’t stand her on RHOA. Which is the real person?/

I’m THRILLED that Chelsea is in. I have to root for my home girl in the finale. I also love Izzy. Izzy can be inconsistent from week to week though. This is the first week that I really liked Chris’s prints on prints on prints look. He nailed it this week. Tieler’s look was a hot mess and if this had been the week three challenge he would have gone home. I do think his collection will be fabulous and he will probably win the final spot over Haawaa. I think most of the judges just wanted to take Tieler but felt that Haawaa didn’t deserve to go home for her look this week.

Overall, AS WE SAY EVERY WEEK, they are putting these kids through the paces at warp speed. If they doubled the filming schedule their looks would be so much better, and they wouldn’t be as stressed out.

When it comes to the crying, on the first season of PRjr there was very little crying. My problem with this season is not “all the crying” It was because the 13 year old boy that Tim saved was not emotionally mature enough to handle the show. Boys don’t mature as fast as girls. His tears seemed to me to indicate that the show might be too much for him to handle, and perhaps he needed a year or two before coming on the show.

On the adult version, there is crying. Tieler cries and it doesn’t bother me a bit. (Hi Tieler!) because he is practically grown and his tears are more ….normal. Trying hard and not ending up with your best work is a reason to cry. Crying when you are voted out, sure.

Speaking of crying. Master Chef Junior started last night and they take 40 kids and eliminate half of them in the first two episodes. OH THE CRYING! There are 8 years olds on that show, I it’s heartbreaking. And they can COOK! Last night they had them cooking in groups of four and sending two home. The challenges were things like make a tart OMG! and make something with salmon or whatever and then randomly one group HAD TO RECREATE A GORDON RAMSEY DISH. That was so much harder than what the other kids had to do! It was heartbreaking to get the sob story about their life and then watch them get sent home.

I’ll shut up now. Great recap as always.

You see, Mark, You are a horrible person. I too am a horrible person. BUT I TRY TO DRAW THE LINE AT CHILDREN!

And most importantly CJ is the best Project Runway Recapper IN.THE,WORLD. And a very nice person. So not bitching about the crying this season is a small price to pay.

After all at least we don’t have that one little obnoxious boy from LAST SEASON. http://tamaratattles.com/tag/project-runway-jr/

Then again. I don’t get Hawaa, Is she not Muslim but using religion as a fashion statement? Is she Muslim and the gauzey covering of the arms is some sort of nod to Islam? Is she a modernized Muslim girl? I wonder about the nose piercing.

When I lived in Libya, my 50ish year old mother got her ears pierced for the first time in the Souk, So clearly piercings are fine, But my poor mother had no anesthesia and they basically smashed a HOOP EARRING in her ear with no prep, She passed out. Then she bravely let them do the other one, I was not allowed to go next, I had those hoop earrings and wore them everyday until I got my newest favorite ones, Some gold Tiffany crosses that never leave my ears, Well they do because sometimes shampoo builds up in the back o them. But you know what I mean, The hoops were stolen when the hood shack got broken into. As far as I know, that was all they got. I checked the pawn shops, but nada,

    True story,

I agree 100% that the little boy who cried (already can’t remember his name) was nowhere near ready for the stress and pressure this kind of show causes these kids. It was kind of hard to watch him. Tieler’s outfit and the “in the crack/camel toe/butt-insulting” fit of the damn thing was AWFUL. I’m presuming they’re thinking he’ll do a lot better with more time. We can only hope. Haawaa needs to get out of her comfort zone – she has good ideas but needs to broaden her inspirations. Izzy’s outfit came out a whole lot better than I expected, but could definitely have done without the two bottom layers. Chelsea’s design looked like a hot mess in the beginning, but damn, the girl pulled it off. Loved Chris’s look. Poor Molly, how could she not have realized that she needed to show she could be more versatile. Although Tieler’s outfit was beyond horrible, the judges made the right call in sending Molly home. Excited to see who they pick for the last one of the final four – Hawaa and Tieler will have to really bring it. LOVE this show – the kids are amazing designers, especially when you consider how really young they are. Amazing sophistication from some of them. Great recap. Can’t wait for the finale.

Love the CJ recaps! I always worry about these young souls in competition. It’s hard to be judged when you are being creative and imaginative. Just hope the parents had a sit down with their kids before allowing them to apply. Competition in Jr High and High School is one thing, but a televised competition is so tough.

Project Runway Junior just eliminated one of the best designers ever to be on the show Tieler is a far better designer than the ones they chose. I think sometimes the judges are a little bias. Haawaa should have been eliminated a long time ago. So I think the judges got it completely wrong what a shame.

It seemed that Kelly was consistently in the tank for Haawaa, regardless of what she sent to the runway. That was again evident during last night’s episode. Unfortunately Tieler stayed a bit too safe with his collection, which was lovely but seemed to lack the uniqueness of some of his previous designs.

But when she sends her piece in, and I have time to get it up (Saturday is supposed to be my full day off) someone remind me that I was an idiot. because I was an idiot FOR THE WHOLE SEASON. Even thought Lawst tried to tell me I was an idiot.
