Anderson Cooper and his mom wrote book, The Rainbow Comes and Goes where Anderson and his mother begin a year-long email conversation to get to know each other better. The impetus for the book was when Anderson was leaving on an overseas assignment and his mother was quite ill and eventually hospitalized. Despite the age of his mother, who was ninety-one when they began emailing, Anderson had never really considered his mother would not always be here. Because of that hospitalization and his inability to be by her side, he wanted to be sure there was nothing left unsaid between them.
This was his mother’s first email.
91 years ago on this day, I was born.
I recall a note from my Aunt Gertrude, received on a birthday long ago.
“Just think, today you are 17 whole years old!” she wrote.
Well, today — I am 91 whole years old — a hell of a lot wiser, but somewhere still 17.
What is the answer? What is the secret? Is there one?
That began the interaction where Anderson learned many things about his mother. This week the book was released in paperback, along with a new chapter.
So of course, Andy Cohen was thrilled to be included.
Have y’all read the book?
Andy is Zaddy ??
Loved this book. HBO also has a documentary called Nothing Left Unsaid which I highly recommend.
I was wondering about that! I watched Bright Lights and loved it..I’ll have to check out Nothing Left Unsaid now. Thanks for the recommendation.
I read the book. I was underwhelmed. I found it to be much like listening in on a stranger’s conversation is a restaurant or coffee shop.
I did enjoy that documentary on HBO as well. I think she could have kept some of her sex life out however. Also the plastic surgery Yikes!! Truman Capote once said she was one of the most vapid , vain women around. Although I admire her in some ways there are stories of her treating Anderson’s father very cruelly and her elderly mother as well. One of her elder sons was estranged from her at the time of that documentary. I hear they have since connected again. I am glad they did as she is 91. Time to make amends before it was too late.
Who doesn’t love listening to other peoples conversations at restaurants. I’m not always REALLY reading my book. IJS.
Most people’s daily lives are boring as shit. My life has been so full of drama, maybe I’m just jaded.
I gave it to my mother for mother’s day and she was thrilled. It was a “quick read,” she said, so I’m not sure how deep it was. But my mother really enjoyed it, especially because she remembered Gloria as the “poor little rich girl,” and then the madcap heiress, and then later the jeans maven.
Wow. I never knew Gloria Vanderbilt was Anderson’s mom. Is this common knowledge?
It’s just recently come out. In the 90s. 😉
After seeing this pic of Andy, I’m more than convinced he gets his nose contoured for every episode of WWHL.
Shade
Oh my, his nose does have a peculiar resemblance to a butt crack, doesn’t it?
Fuck you all for making me go look at the buttcrack nose. Clearly, I don’t pay attention to faces. This is why I have no facial recognition skills.
For some reason this reminded me of going to the mall with my parents as a teen. they were in their 40s when I was born. Daddy would sit on a bench in the mall while mother and I shopped. I would frequently walk toward the wrong old man sitting on a bench. They all looked alike. It’s true! next time you are in a mall check that out. If there are still married old people in the world. Perhaps they’ve gone the way of the pay phone.
There’s probably more married old couples than there are malls still open.
Perhaps. I haven’t been to one in ages. Mostly because there is a lot of murdery, carjacking shit that happens there. One day, I plan to going to the outlet malls in N. Georgia. Maybe. Or not.
I’m giving Rolly my Jackhole award for that comment. I cannot stop looking at the butt crack nose now. I can’t deal with it. Make it stop.
