Off to a bit of a late start due to a technical glitch with my much beleaguered DVR. With the return of Shondaland tonight I’ll be surprised if the my poor DVR doesn’t just give up and die tonight.
It looks like the first quickfire is a palate challenge tonight. Most of them were really terrible at. Brooke won 14 cases of wine for getting 16 right. Her closest competitor got 11 right. Emily was last with five. No one was eliminated.
The chefs are to cater a high-end meal that reminds them of their childhood. The charity event will be held at the Marsh House on Kiawah Island. It’s a $500 a ticket event to support a children’s hospital. Tesar bought an entire case of crab leaving none for Sylva who also wanted crab as well. Sheldon is making barley tea for a rice dish he used to eat with his dad. Brooke is making her Sunday breakfast dish. Emily is making her Grandpa’s ice box cake. Dessert is a risky move. Good luck, Ems. Casey has lost her mind. She had a southern grandmother and a French grandmother. She ate crab cakes with her southern grandma and macaroons with her French one. So obviously she is making a crab Macaroon. Ah, the cookies will be replaced with cut out circles of white bread. Tom says, so basically, it’s a crab Hot Pocket. Oh my. Shirley is making a lamb dish. Because that’s super Asian. I think they have all lost their mind.
Emily has problems with her cake, but she has a positive attitude. Brooke’s eggs are giving her fits. They all somehow get their prep work done.
The first family sob story of the week comes from Sylva. It’s more a nice childhood memory about how he got from Haiti to the US.
Tesar talks about his mental attitude struggles. He says he slipped a bit during restaurant wars. Katsuji really tried him last week. Some of the girls are talking about his temperament.
Sylva is making beef patty lollipops. Because they are working outside, they are not holding their shape and he has to reroll all 100 of them. He seems to be in trouble.
Tesar’s scampi crab with a foam topping is a huge hit. Casey’s crab cake macaroon looks great. But Padama and the hot judge whose intro I missed think it is a bit under seasoned.
Brooke’s crepe with trout roe goes over well with the judges, but the guests are not as thrilled. Shirley’s lamb is tough and hard to cut. It’s also to large of a portion. Emily’s ice box cake was sort of middle of the road with the guests and the judges thought there was not enough to it. Sheldon’s tea and rice was a winner.
Sylva’s beef lollies with turmeric and curry was finished with truffle jus. Tom says it’s the best meat patty he had ever had. Sounds like Sylva in a contender for the win.
The top three seem to be Sylva, Sheldon and Brooke. They judges really liked everything so picking a loser is going to be a challenge.
The judges raved about the top three. In the end, Sylva won. This is his second win.
The bottom three were Emily, Shirley and Casey were in the bottom three. The judges liked all three dishes and are having to be very picky. Casey’s crab macaroon was a bit under seasoned. Shirley’s lamb was hard to cut and should have been smaller. Emily’s dish was too simple and needed to be elevated and les muddled. I think Emily is done.
Hottie chef points out that Sylva and Emily are the last two rookies and one rose to the occasion and the other didn’t. So Emily finally goes home. But she leaves with class, and I am proud of the home girl chef. She fought through a lot of difficulties and was the second to the last rookie to go home.
Next week everyone seems to have major struggles.
P.S. Last night I had to change my site from httpS to http so if there is an S on a link you try to click it will will give an error message. There is no danger in bypassing the message. You should all clear your caches again to help fix some of the issues. As you know, each time I have to swap my DNS to another server, things get a bit hinky for a day or two. Thanks for your patience.
