I tend to forget that TLC exists. These days TLC is all about exploiting people with some sort of physical abnormality or addiction issue. And then there is Kate Gosselin. She fascinates me. On the one hand, she’s doing a great job as the single mother of eight kids. On the other hand, she’s simply awful. She gives me major cognitive dissonance. How can I admire her ability to keep it all together, make enough money to live in a comfortable fashion and feed and clothe and chauffeur eight kids. She is an evil dictator, yet I wonder if there is any other way to wrangle so many kids.
So today I was trying to clear out some space on my DVR and watched the episode of Kate Plus 8 from last Wednesday. I’m not sure if that was a premiere episode for the season or what. I was mainly watching for Collin.
Collin has always been my favorite. I have always wanted to rescue Collin from that house. The divorce seemed to hit Collin the hardest. It seemed to me as though he was hoping it was his exit strategy. Perhaps he could go live with dad. But Kate would never allow that. So the resentment continued to build. Collin has always been confrontational. And he’s very smart. He would challenge Kate frequently about her rules and point out how some of them were unfair or unnecessary in very practical terms. Kate viewed Collin as the problem child very early on in his life.
The other kid that struggles a lot with Kate is Hannah. She refused to return home on a visit to her father’s once and got to stay with him for a few more days.
At some point after filming for this season ended, there was a DFACS investigation into the health and safety of Collin. On GMA Kate was asked about it and she says she is a public figure so she gets investigated all the time. Shortly after that, Collin was locked up in an inpatient treatment facility. This is heartbreaking. I used to work for a facility that is owned by the same people who run the one he seems to be at. You begin on a locked ward that is basically a kid’s prison. You attempt to work your way out of prison with good behavior. If you are successful you a moved to the other ward were you have a bit more freedom of movement. School is a joke. The entire place is depressing and frightening. The kids are sad and lonely and the facility is one that DFACS uses to place kids. So it is possible a social worker sent him there. I don’t think that this will be beneficial to Collin in any way.
It is just heartbreaking. The worst part is that Jon says he isn’t sure where Colin is and has not seen him in almost two years. Which is the whole problem. Kate refuses to co-parent with Jon. When it is time for him to have the kids, he just pulls up to the end of the driveway and takes whatever kids show up. The two older girls never go for visitation and the other six show up groups of 2 to 6. Jon has said he never knows who is coming. I wonder if he still visits with them.
Anyway, I am not recapping this show, but I may comment from time to time. Are y’all watching?
