On Tuesday night FYI premiered a whole new set of brides and grooms willing to get married to perfect strangers. This season we have three couples. The premiere was super long because introducing us to six new willing participants takes a long while. I will try to give a little rundown of all the couples. By the way, this year they did all their casting in Atlanta instead of New York! Did I mention all three couples from last season are divorced? But two of the three in the first season are still together.
Ashley and David
Ashley (30) is a nanny and nursing student. Ashley’s parents separated when she was young but her mom remarried and she is close with her stepfather. She has had several serious relationships; the last one ended a few years ago. She’s ready for marriage and a family.
David (29)is a software account executive, a serial monogamist and self-proclaimed romantic. His dad, who died when he was 7, was once a contestant on “The Newlywed Game.” He’s been single for two years. He planned to propose to his last serious girlfriend but she abruptly ended the relationship days before he was going to pop the question.
David was the most nervous on the wedding day.
Neil and Sam
Neil (31) is a laboratory compliance specialist, Bowlus’ parents divorced when he was young but his mom is happily remarried. He believes in the effectiveness of arranged marriages because his grandparents had an arranged marriage. He enjoys running marathons, hiking, skydiving and snowboarding. I think Neil might be a virgin. His mismatched eyes (one I bigger than the other) would take some getting used to. I’m glad he cut the beard way down.
Sam (30) is a bank manager. Her military family moved around a lot when she was growing up and her parents divorced when she was a teenager. Her relationship role model is her grandparents, who were married for 60 years. She’s been single for 2½ years.
Neil is a painter and his bride gave him a painting before the wedding so he is down. He gave Sam a big spoon and a letter spoon with a fantastic letter. I am liking this couple better now. Neil is half Indian. His Indian grandmother is there for the wedding. She had a very long arranged marriage.
Both Sam and Neil are sort of oddballs. Let’s just hope they work together. Sam had a major panic attack just before the wedding that may have delayed things a bit.
Vanessa and Tres
Vanessa (26) is a corporate events manager, who grew up a military brat who moved around a lot as a kid. Her parents divorced when she was in high school and she hasn’t spoken to her father since. She’s been single for two years following a long-distance relationship that lasted four years.
Tres (27) is a luxury car salesman. He was raised by his grandmother and aunt after his mom left when he was 3 years old. There was some racial situation there. He’s biracial and has one full sister who “looks completely white.” His mom left his dad and took the “white girl” with her and left the “black boy” with the black father. It was all very awkwardly explained as you can imagine. The father was around but had many other children and he didn’t see him much. His last serious relationship lasted three years. I think Tres said he is down for sex on their wedding night. It could have been David. I had their names mixed up for most of the show.
Both Vanessa’s family and Tres were completely overcome with relief that the arrangement was between two black people. His grooms said even though Tres is mixed, he was raised in the black side of the family and to see the all black bridesmaids was a relief. Vanessa’s family nearly fell out for real when Tres walked out. Tres is very cute and so is Vanessa.
These two had very positive first impressions of each other. This is the only couple we saw at the alter. Things are going perfectly. And Tres freaks out at the last minute!
I really think all three couples are good matches. And yes, I am the person who thinks all of this will work out.
BTW PLEASE DON”T SPOIL ME ON THIS SHOW. I KNOW SPOILERS ARE OUT THERE. PLEASE DON’T BRING THEM HERE!
