Project Runway Reunion Recap: Mean Girls

November 13, 2015 by tamaratattles 64 Comments

Project Runway Haute Tech

The only way this reunion is going to be good is if the other contestants call foul on the predestined winner.  And that will never happen. But I’m going to watch anyway. Because, Tim Gunn.  Oh I forgot about the Swapnil  stuff with Tim Gunn! That might be good.

Okay, as if I wasn’t irritated enough with Ashley, did she just say that winning as “tooken her this far?”  How cringeworthy. I wish the camera would have been on Tim for that. I am newly irked by seeing her NYFW collection once again.

Tim asks if people think that Ashley won because she did plus sized clothes. Everyone gives very PC answers.

I didn’t realize how hard Nina was on Kelly until they played a whole montage about it.

I understand now why it seemed like Edmond always had two dresses. It seems like he had a fake one on a body form and pulled out all of his real stuff at the end.Project Runway Haute tech 2

Everyone hates Candice as much as we did.  They only have six people on the couches and everyone else is shoved back stage with a flat screen TV and a craft services table. When Candice talks everyone takes that moment to grab a snack and refresh their drinks. Someone says whatever she says is bullshit. Candice says that everyone thinks all that Ashley did was cry, but she learned that women can be vulnerable. Or something. It was a dig disguised as a compliment.

Next is a montage of Merline’s annoying behavior. Merline did kind of mellow out after awhile. Tim called her memorable which means she will return for an All-Stars at some point.

Tim tells Swapnil that basically he didn’t think he was living up to his potential.  Swapnil says that he had always looked up to Tim and when he got bad feedback from him it discouraged him.  Tim was also pissed off by Swapnil’s “aim to be middle of the pack strategy.”  Swapnil’s comments made no sense. Is he high?  I’m serious, he has such a goofy smile through everything he says.  Maybe he had some champagne and he’s not used to it ?

They finally bring out the losers. Joseph says that he is unhappy with his edit because it makes him look like he is controlling Merline. Tim says that in his opinion the edit is kind to everyone.

Tim Gunn says the blogs were calling Blake a racist over his “I don’t speak Indian” comment. Were we? I just remember calling him an annoying twat and a fucking idiot.

It’s time to discuss the paintball team challenge where Ashley was ostracized by the four mean girls. Kelly says she objects to being called a mean girl because the guys could have also chosen her. They said they played on an all male team from the beginning. And not choosing Ashley would not have been such a big deal if they had not gone on to tell all the judges she needed to go home. Ashley said the only people who were nice to her were Laurie and some of the guys. Kelly and Amanda ( who I don’t recall at all and had to wait for her name to come up) both adamantly deny any mean girl behavior.Candice then starts in on how overly emotional Ashley was.  Kelly is coming off as a giant bitch in all of this. In fact, all the mean girls are self identifying with more mean girl behavior and denial. Blake says that Candice is the actual mean girl who was constantly making Ashley cry.  Lindsay and Ashely get into it. It’s clear the only girl that likes Ashley is Laurie and possibly Merline who likes everyone.  The mean girls just made themselves look even worse in this segment.

After the break they bring out all the people I don’t even remember because they were voted off early. Except of course I remember Hanmiao.  Because no one could forget her.

Why is Swapnil holding on to Lindsay for dear life? Tim calls Hanmiao out for being all over Blake. They are both drunk.

There is a long montage of people crying.

Kelly won $25,000 from Mary Kay for winning the most challenges.

I was going to recap Project Runway Jr. now, but it didn’t record. I just set it up to record for tomorrow morning, so if you could hold off on discussing that, it would be awesome.

I don’t recall the 25k prize for winning the most challenges ever being awarded before. It seemed like Tim ssid it was a first. I wonder if they asked the sponsor for it as a “we’re sorry” for not choosing hard-up Kelly as the winner. Ashley doesn’t seem like a very gracious winner. More interested in that her feelings were hurt. She looks as bad as the mean girls, in her own way.

This is the first season that I wondered for a second who the last remaining group was in the green room. A truly unremarkable season.

Ashley acted like a snob and I wonder if they were mean to her because she acted like a jackass throughout the entire season. Her collection was ugly no matter what sized women it was aimed for she came across as stupid and unfriendly. The others were bitter and not the greatest cast from any season of this show. I still liked Edmond the best. I am glad that this is over and hope that they pick better contestants next time. Tim was far more outspoken then he ever was before and that was refreshing.

hahaha funny. My issue with Ashley is her lack of high fashion (Forever21 and H&M should hire her) and also: would Ashley wear those clothes? If she is designing for plus size it should be something she herself would wear. Those crop tops? I don’t think so.

I think they all were pretty sauced up. These reunions always seem to have the champs flowing pretty freely.

I adore Tim Gunn but his shine got a little dimmer for me on this reunion. Pulling out the R word.. Really Tim? And the way he addressed the swapnil situation didn’t sit well with me. We get it,Tim. You were pissed, but only because you care. /eye roll. And then there’s everyone acting as though Ashley’s collection was good fashion. I felt embarrassed for the other designers having to compliment that mess. Her collection was awful, just awful.

Here’s hoping project runway junior breathes some life into this series.

        *Tim Gunn voice*

“Look guys. You were all shit. I was upset at Swapnil because I had hopes he might not be shit, and I could stop drinking myself to sleep every night. Crybaby, you’ve had your moment. Now fuck off and go make some tents. Kelly, you win most improved retard. And with that the Special Olympics of fashion is over. Tune in for Project Runway Junior, a show we had to make because clearly we’ve run out of literate adults who can sew, and aren’t overdue a lobotomy. Make it work!”

Thanks, TT. Not only was it underwhelming, the PR recap reinforced what a terrible season it was. For the first episode or two, it appeared there was enough talent to make an impressive season, but it certainly did not turn out that well. If I was any of the judges, I would have been profoundly embarrassed by what was shown at NY Fashion Week. While a few impressive pieces made it through to the finale, in fact the bulk of what was shown was deeply underwhelming. None of Kelly’s work even belonged on the stage, most of Edmunds’ met the same low standard ,and while some of Candace’s pieces had stage presence and some sense of a style, a good deal of it was just staging , and as was mentioned, it was neither cohesive nor unique.

None of them provided leading edge, distinctive, creative work. I had had great hope that Ashley, as a larger woman, would have spent years thinking about the challenges larger women face and solutions, and provide innovative, creative pieces that would stand out, but few did. Some of the color combinations were attractive, the lace nice , but where was the fit and proportion that reflected the tailoring and attention to detail./style that provided a unique, award wining style? Where was the attention to creative ways of HIDING rather than showing back fat, for example? I saw nothing sexy, almost nothing sleek, and virtually nothing of real style. Her hair pieces appeared to be focused on distraction, rather than calling attention to beautiful work. I hoped for much more from her. I do give her great credit for taking this issue on, but she had a unique moment and , it was a disappointment.

Last night they all focused on their feelings and personal preferences for/against people, rather than their craft and experience , and ways to move the PR alum forward in their careers.

Two major issues remain, to me:1) they obviously did a poor job selecting candidates for PR 14, resulting in 2/3 of the 4 delivering quite unimpressive work. And 2) I was floored that Tim left them to their own devices on the home visits- there must be a requirement that by the time he arrives, 2/3rds or more of the work must be in final stages, so he has something to see, and then he must give them more than platitudes- hard core, real feedback that helps them fix problems while time remains. The judges’ feedback while clear and good, was too late for the mammoth changes several of them required, if they had hope of delivering something of value. It feels some shows like Tim gives them encouragement, but not much direction. Maybe that is intended. But if I were one of the designers, I would be hoping to learn more while designing, not only after the show.

I really look forward to Project Runway each season, and week. Was truly disappointed this year, and hope they are saying similar things and planning a recovery for next year.

Mark, You brought up something that irritated me too. After seasons of seeing designers do some pretty fantastic creative things, it so got on my nerves for her to act like what she did was creative itself. Because we’ve seen those who made all the jewelry to go with their clothes, design their own patterns and so forth. Let’s face it, the fact that she HAND DYED all of her materials, is not even note worthy.

Anyone else think Kelly was underwhelmed by the shock prize? Kinda like, “Whoo great, thanks pal. You tipped me for the win and then gave it to Chiquita Crybaby.” Also I think it was pretty clear that she was incensed at being labelled a bullt, and probably a fat hater or something by the PC internet martyrs. All she was doing was telling her she was annoying and shit. It wasn’t personal.

Entrepreurial women? Sidetracking Candice, who has a fully working brand, making money and showing at London Fashion Week?

Bitch or not, they really fucked her up. They didn’t need to show that green room shit. They didn’t give her, a finalist, a moment montage, or ask her a final thought. She had to squeeze out “ditto.” Must be shit to be on a fashion show and be judged on your personality even though you’re the most visionary there. They were pretty shadyboots. Maybe she was a bitch to Ashley because she is annoying, and shit. Honestly, if I was trying to work and someone like Ashley was there, I would think, “Fuck sake. I’m trying to work here. I can’t be arsed with your problems. Go cry outside.” Even if I LIKED them.

Also Swapnil makes my boy parts tingle. And I don’t normally go for Indian men. And no, Tim Gunn, I’m not a racist.

The problem with Swapnil for me is that his personality negates any physical attractiveness that he may have. Oh, and he needs to get rid of those ridiculous colored contacts. That would help too.

I’m all for going in with a strategy, but his “aim for the middle” one was completely idiotic. The point is to outsmart your competition, not to get yourself eliminated through your stupidity.

Ashley still annoys me. The constant crying from the first challenge. She won and still cannot get over they were mean to me. Yes the girls were not the nicest but Ashley likes to play up the victim card. Plus now I see Laurie was a bit of an instigator. She went from saying I heard them say they were throwing Ashley under the bus to it was an opinion based on other comments.

I thought it was a good point that the guys didn’t choose Ashley either. I really hadn’t thought about that. I guess, since they had spent time with her, all the designers were fed up with Ashley’s behavior.

At the time that teams were chosen I was still cheering her on and I felt sorry for her. As if P.R. wasn’t enough, I saw her on the Rachel Zoe show and I thought she was obnoxious. To me she seemed to be laughing “behind her hand” that she had conned everyone.

Every single designer on the show this season was not up to par. But I went back and looked at photographs of each and every collection at New York Fashion Week. Well of the Project Runway collections. Ultimately, I see why my costume designer friend said that he agreed with the judge’s decision. Candice made costumes out of some of her pieces and she had way too much leather. There were also fit issues. I hated a lot of Kelly designs and fabric choices. The wood fabric was over used, and the fabric that was made to look like metal plating was cheesy. Edmond had some lovely dresses. frankly individual pieces of his collection where some of the best on the runway.. but he himself talked about seeing Kelly and Ashley’s stories being told on the runway. He forgot he needed to tell a story too. Kelly was the only other one that had a good strong story, besides Ashley, but again I don’t think her work was as luxurious even in fabric as Ashley’s.

I would absolutely agree with the person who said that Project Runway Jr designers were more talented then many on this past season Project Runway.

As for the reunion? Total shitshow. Part of the problem was that I think most of them were drunk before they even got out on stage. And frankly, if you drop the issue of her being picked last… They were a pack of Mean Girls. Kelly outrage that Ashley did not correct Blake when he called them all out on their behavior was disgusting and laughable at the same time. Kelly was my favorite in a lot of ways, but she left a bad taste in my mouth with that final behavior and trying to make excuses for her behavior during that challenge. Her excuse for treating Ashley that way was that she was mad Ashley didn’t defend her? Her mean girl behavior came first!

Now that I think about it… I kind of regret watching it in the first place. The reunion that is. I still have hopes for next season.

Why is everyone pretending that they don’t know that. She’s fat, and they, being fashionistas have a aversion to her. I am not saying it’s right, but can we just get real for a minute?

You have a valid point because even when the designers have a challenge dressing ‘normal’ size women they all act like it’s a major issue. This season was way to scripted with the obvious story of Ashley – larger girl gets bullied but gets her revenge by winning which would have worked if Ashley stopped crying and played the played her part better.

Also to anyone who thought that the final collections this season sucked (they kind of did), check out Swapnil’s NYFW dummy collection. It was amazing. Same colour palette as Ashley’s (it is very on trend atm) but with very flowy dresses, crisp seperates, sweet leather jackets over gowns with very Indian inspired embelishments.

It would have been a slam dunk easy win if he made it to final 3. I bet the judges regretted that decision to eliminate him.

Yes! I agree. His collection was by far heads I above the rest. I kind of think swapnil got the worst edit of anyone, leading up to his disastrous performance in the makeover challenge.

Granted he made a fatal mistake in playing it safe throughout the season, but he sure paid a heavy price for that. He’s had nothing but nice things to say about the show and Tim since throughout the season from what I’ve seen, so imo his humility and grace in light of all the hate he got speaks volumes about him as a person.

The NYFW shows are taped weeks before the finale, so project runway allows other designers in the season to show so that the final 3 (or 4) aren’t spoiled for TV viewers. They’re also called “decoy collections”

TT would it be asking to much to ask for an exception to the nickname rule? I’ve been calling swapnil “swapmeat” in my head all season and I have to catch myself every time I post about his hot ass.

I second this rule. I want to have his little caramel babies.

So you’re saying he made that in the same length of time, with the same amount of money as the other designers??? They saw this and STILL went with Crybaby??? Fuck sake. I new it was all fixed, but that just seems like stupidity. They must KNOW that people will see this and think WTF??

Yep. Merlene also made a dummy collection. It has a lot of…hats. It’s to help prevent spoiling the final 3-4 designers if the final 8-6 all get to make a collection.

haha Yes Ashley said “tooken” thank you, I was screaming inside when she said that.
I honestly like Ashley as a person, but her clothes were so Forever 21 circa last year. And no living, sane plus sized woman alive is going to say:
“OMG a crop top to go with my giant skirt! Now I can show off my stretch marked huge stomach. ” No one on Earth is going to be wanting that. I’m not saying large girls are ugly, they would have looked gorgeous if she reworked the cuts and gained a little high fashion insight,
but let me give you some perspective: women who have gained a few or women who have had some babies, or women who’s tummies are keeping them from seeing their own shoes will NOT buy her clothes. So….yeah, that was ridiculous. I like Ashley, but…no.

    My point is, isn’t plus-sized clothing supposed to FLATTER the body? I mean, COME ON? I’m thinking Ashley got the words “FLATTER” and “FATTER” mixed up. I am a plus-sized woman (according to them at size 10/12), and I didn’t see ANYTHING in her collection that would look on my body. AND, let me just point out that half of her clothes all season were THE SAME CIRCLE SKIRT AND CROP TOP, and did we see it again in her collection? YES!!! More than once!! {{clutching my pearls}}
I agree with you all that this season was underwhelming at best. Here’s to hoping that next season gets better because I DO love the show……PR junior looks promising, btw.

Plus sized clothing is NOT supposed to flatter anything, rather it should tone it (body flaws) down.

So, basically, you are saying that plus size women have nothing to show off and no physical attractions at all? Fuckwit.

Here’s what I liked about Ashley’s work. On prior seasons, when confronted with dressing large women, designers went dowdy. Ashley said fu, I’m fat and I am wearing this…in Bright colors! Yeah, there were misses… The Fantasia dancing elephant purle peplum dress, the headdresses and the thunder thigh romper. That said, I would have given Kelly the win, because her clothes looked fun, and best in show to Edmond’s bow dress

I love Edmond’s bow dress. I’ve already forgotten most of what I saw, but on that dress alone I think Edmond should have won.
I don’t remember most of Ashley’s things, but her collection was certainly not “adorable,” as Nina said. Nina must have lost her damn mind.
Ashley’s lace looked heavy: was it knitted? She should have used different lace. I didn’t much care for her colors. Or the head things. All I know about Mexico City in the 50’s is Frida Kahlo lived there and died there. Frida wore flowers in her hair sometimes.
I get what Ashley was trying to do: evoke a sense of lightness and exuberance, fun and sexiness.
Her collaboration with Candice on the show was the direction she should have taken Imo.
Candice and Kelly were clueless. Candice did embrace the cliché. Red and black? That’s dated.
Didn’t Tim say the red lace looked cheap?
And what was going on with where she lives? That house with the pool. I live in San Francisco, and we mostly don’t have houses like that here. If it’s here, it’s worth millions of dollars. And her studio’s in Berkeley, I think. Something’s missing from her story — it doesn’t really add up.
I’m trying to finds pics of her collection, and I just saw another of Swapnil’s: the sheer sea-foam two-piece. So elegant and truly beautiful. And *his* gowns are Wearable. He also made the Adorable backless black ruffled dress back when he still had his mojo. I didn’t believe he was ever aiming for the middle — I think he lost his confidence because his good pieces kept losing.

If you look at her website, Candace has shown at London Fashion week a few times. Pretty sure some celebs have worn her stuff, and there are articles from high profile magazines. I think she’s a LOT more established than she let on. Did you notice with the logo challenge, she already had hers and it was slick and professional looking?

I definitely don’t think Ashley had the best collection. I think she won because it was plus size. I think many people feel that way which is why Tim brought that up specifically. I think Edmund should have won. I wish Swapnil stuck around longer but he wasn’t earning his spot. Although there were several safe challenges where he should have won. I think Ashley played the victim a lot this season which is a cop out.

So… area Lindsey and Swapnil together? They were holding hands the whole time.
