Are you ready for a new episode of The Walking Dead? The wolves have been dispatched but that doesn’t mean the survivors are safe. We’ve gone back in time to the horn blaring. The crew that was leading the walker horde away from the quarry are reacting to the sound. They know something bad is happening at home but they don’t know what it is. On top of that, the walkers they’ve been leading away are being called straight to Alexandria. They’re panicking. They’re running, trying to stay ahead of the horde. The Alexandrians in the group are falling apart, literally and figuratively. Rick makes a plan to get the RV and lead the walkers back on track. He asks Glenn and Michonne to take the Alexandrians home. He pulls them aside to say that they should do whatever it takes to get themselves home (even if they have to sacrifice the others). Pre-Morgan Rick is back. Heath overhears the conversation and makes a stink face. Before he can throw a fit, another Alexandrian gets attacked by a walker. They’re dropping like flies, people.
Rick takes off. Glenn and Michonne continue leading the Alexandrians home. One girl already injured her foot. They come across a group of walkers and go to take them out. One Alexandrian is so scared he ends up shooting one of his own people in the leg and then runs away. Shit show. Then someone else gets bit. So our group is now Glenn, Michonne, Heath (who has a bad attitude about Rick), Nicholas (who previously tried to kill Glenn), the girl with the injured foot, the guy who got shot in the leg and the guy that got bit. Glenn and Michonne should just dump those losers but you know they won’t. Daryl, Sasha and Abraham are still leading part of the herd according to the original plan. They’re 5 miles out with another 15 to go when Daryl decides to return to Alexandria to lend a hand. Sasha and Abraham aren’t too pleased but there’s not much they can do about it.
The bit guy knows he’s dying. He tells Michonne about meeting his wife after everything went down and how she brought him back to human. “Finding her in all of this, that was everything.” Romance in the zombie apocalypse. They stop in the town where Nicholas and Aiden abandoned their crew (before we met them) to take care of the injured. They find the guy that ran away earlier in the episode, being eaten, of course. It’s all too much for Nicholas. He starts losing it. He’s a very troubled man. The town is full of walkers that wandered off course so everyone hides in an old pet shop. Glenn decides to start a fire to pull the walkers away from their route home. Michonne doesn’t want to separate but Glenn is insistent. Nicholas suggests burning the feed store and offers to go with Glenn. I don’t like that. I still don’t trust that guy. Before they leave, he tells Rick the plan over walkie talkie. Rick is fighting walkers and either cuts himself or gets bit, it’s hard to tell. Glenn lovingly calls him dumbass (which is what he called Rick when they met).
In the pet shop, Michonne and Heath are helping the injured. The girl with the injured foot asks them to leave her. She doesn’t want to slow them down. The guy who got shot in the leg wants to be left too. Heath throws a snit fit. “WE don’t leave people behind.” And then he looks at Michonne as if to say, “like YOU do.” Bitch, please. Don’t you be dissing Michonne. “No one is leaving ANYONE behind,” she snarls as she stares him down. Then she takes him aside for a little talk. He confesses he heard what Rick said. Michonne puts the smackdown on him. “Have you ever had to kill people because they killed your friends and were coming for you next? Have you ever done things that made you feel afraid of yourself afterward? Have you ever been covered in so much blood you didn’t know if it was yours or walkers’ or your friends’? Huh? Then you don’t know.” As Glenn and Nicholas run through town, they come upon a walker that Nicholas knows. It’s one of his people that he abandoned. He’s twitching out again but Glenn reminds him, “You’re not that guy anymore.” Then they hear gunshots coming from Alexandria. Things keep getting worse…
Rick makes it to the RV and starts her up. One of his hands is all bloody and useless but he’s still prepared to save the day. The crew hiding in the pet store are keeping silent while the walkers leave town, headed for the gunshots in Alexandria. The bit guy gives Michonne a note to give his wife in case he doesn’t make it home. She hands it back and writes on her arm, “You’re getting home.” Even in the apocalypse, Michonne uses the correct form of “you’re” and that gives me solace. Some walkers in the pet store suddenly wake up and start a ruckus. The noise they make brings other walkers to the shop so the crew has no choice but to fight their way out. And by crew I mean Michonne, Heath, the girl with the injured foot, the guy who got shot in the leg and the guy that got bit. Great crew you got there, Michonne. The girl with the injured foot falls and yells at them to keep running. Within seconds she’s walker food. Glenn and Nicholas run up to the feed store they planned to set on fire but it has already burned down. And they’re surrounded by walkers. Michonne, Heath and the two injured guys are chased to a big fence. The only way out is over. Heath and the guy who got shot in the leg climb to safety. Michonne and the bit guy start climbing but the walkers are upon them, pulling at their legs.
Glenn and Nicholas find themselves in a similar alley but there are walkers on both sides of the fence. There is literally nowhere to go. They try shooting the walkers but there are too many of them. Back at the other fence, Heath is shooting the walkers grabbing Michonne’s legs. She’s kicking but she can’t get free. The guy who got bit doesn’t have Michonne’s strength and the walkers pull him down. Michonne gets free and over the fence while walkers eat the guy who got bit. All they can do is watch it happen. His note to his wife falls on the ground and walkers trample it. Michonne, Heath and the guy who got shot in the leg hobble away. Glenn and Nicholas climb onto a dumpster which gives them temporary safety. There are so many walkers. Hey! Is that Greg Nicotero (Executive Producer, makeup artist extraordinaire and all around bad ass) as a walker? I think it is. Nicholas is going wiggy again. Glenn tries to get him to focus but he’s too far gone. He tells Glenn, “Thank you,” and blows his brains out. Oh no! As he falls, he pulls Glenn down under him. The walkers attack. Glenn is screaming as the walkers rip him apart. No, no, no! This isn’t supposed to happen. I’m not okay with this. And now there are tears (mine, not Glenn’s). Why? Why Glenn? I hate this show.
Michonne, Heath and the guy who got shot in the leg stumble through the woods. At least they’re not getting attacked. Michonne looks for smoke from Glenn’s fire. Heath assures her that doesn’t mean they didn’t make it. She knows better. She glances at her arm and sees the message she wrote to the guy who got bit. No one’s going home to their wives tonight. Heath sees his reflection in a stream and he’s covered in blood. Is it his or walkers’ or his friends’? Well, now he has a better idea of what it’s really like out there. Rick stops the RV and radios Glenn. All he hears is static. He tries Tobin. Static. He finally gets a response from Daryl. He thinks Daryl is still with Sasha and Abraham when he’s actually driving towards Alexandria. Sasha pipes up on the walkie talkie. “How about that Daryl? He said they should be coming OUR way.” Sasha’s acting snotty but she does have a point. He shouldn’t have abandoned them. Then they hear the gunfire from home. Rick tells them the best thing they can do for Alexandria is pull the walkers away. “This is for them. Going back before we’re done would be for us.”
Rick turns on the walkie to share more words of wisdom but before he can say a word, a wolf with a gun busts down the door and shoots at him. Daryl, Sasha and Abraham hear the gun on the walkie. They try to contact him but he’s in a fight for his life. He takes out the shooter but another wolf attacks him from behind. This throws Daryl into a crisis of confidence. He’s torn on where to go, who to save. Rick manages to take out the second wolf too. Daryl has chosen a path and is speeding towards his destination. Rick notices something in one of the wolve’s pocket and pulls it out. It’s Alexandria baby food. Uh oh. Before he can worry too much about Judith he notices three more wolves sneaking around the RV. And yes, in case you were wondering, they’re the wolves that Morgan chased out of Alexandria. This is why you kill them, Morgan. This is why. Rick is done messing around. He takes a machine gun and fires through the RV walls, killing all of the wolves. Michonne, Heath and the guy who got shot in the leg stumble into the outskirts of Alexandria. They see destruction everywhere. Daryl rejoins Sasha and Abraham leading the horde away. Rick tries to start the RV but it’s dead. He probably shouldn’t have gone so crazy with the machine gun. He looks outside and he’s being inundated with walkers from every side. Things don’t look good for Rick.
Next week: Morgan practices with his stick. There’s a voiceover about moving forward and making peace. Subtitles read: You can’t escape your past. And then Morgan is burning walker bodies. Make of that what you will. And make room in your DVR. Next week we get a 90 minute show so there will be lots to discuss!
