Nene Leakes has announced that she will return to Broadway for a limited engagement as Matron Mama Morton in Kander & Ebb’s musical Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre from 23 November to 20 December 2015. Please take a look at the photo above. Great wig, nice makeup (black and white photo helps) simple black top, she looks great. Why doesn’t she stick to this look???
She’s going to love returning to NYC for the Christmas holidays! She was in NYC last year for Christmas playing Cinderella’s evil stepmother. If you missed that click here! She worked eight shows a week for approximately the same amount of times. At least this year she will be done before Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Perhaps she will enjoy Christmas in the giant house in Atlanta that she is hardly ever living in.
Four weeks is a long time for a non-athlete to appear on Broadway, but Nene has shown us already that she can do it. She is a different person on Broadway. Check out this interview from her Cinderella run. She’s literate, and dare I say even humble and grateful! We all hoped that change would be permanent at the time, but that didn’t happen. Nene was in the running for this role last year and ended up accepting the role on Cinderella instead. It seems they were interested enough from that process to ask her to take on the role for this holiday break.
Nene will be playing Mama Morton, the Matron of the Chicago Prison where much of the show takes place. The role has previously been played by many other non-Broadway actors including Queen Latifah and arch enemy Wendy Williams who is probably having a meltdown over the news.
The lead is currently being played by Rumer Willis who according to Wendy Williams is being a giant diva behind the scenes. On Broadway, everyone is expected to do their own makeup and take care of themselves backstage with no entourage. As the star, Rumer reportedly wants some special attention that she is not getting. It’s interesting that they would add Nene to that mix. It’s likely that Rumer will take time off during the holidays and have an understudy in her role.
Congratulations to Nene for this fantastic accomplishment. Break a leg, Nene. Broadway (or Bra way) awaits once again!
