Project Runway Recap: Avant Garde 3D Challenge

Project RUnway Merline avant garde
Merlines 3D avant garde look

I have been dying to recap the most recent episode of Project Runway but sadly real life drama keeps interfering. I can’t wait to see what happens this week. Despite the weakest group of designers ever, I still love this show. Plus I want to see if Tim saves Swapnil and if anyone makes Tim Gunn say more bad words!

Dear God, Zoe what’s her faces show is still airing on the front of this recording. Since I have to tape in the middle of the night, I was able to add five minutes to the end this time so um, YAY!  The recap of last week is basically who won, who lost and Tim Gunn cussing out Swapnil!

We start in the apartments and not at Swapnil’s auffing so it is official he is gone. My homeboy, Edmond is the last man standing. This bodes well for him making final three because I doubt they will send three females to the finale. Plus, I want him to win. Kelly seems over confident, and who the hell expected Merline to get this far?

The challenge is inspired by bridges. There are three choices. Who the hell really cares what bridge they get? Fashion based on a bridge could be any fucking bridge. And to make matters worse, they have to use 3d printing. It’s an avant garde challenge. I could be any less interested. The winner gets a 3d Printer. Whoop dee doo.  Everyone seems to be going literal except homeboy who may get called out for seemingly doing what he wants and adding some sort of bridge stuff as sort of an after thought. Ashley is going to do pants! Thank God no circle skirt from her this week. She could win.

Kelly's Avante Guard look, Will she be Auffed?
Kelly’s Avante Guard look, Will she be Auffed?

Side Note: Tim Gunn as yet to use his save, in order for the season to work out right he is going to have to use it. It is already thrown off by the guy who quit.  I doubt anyone goes home this week. On the other hand, they may all just be ready to bring this to a merciful end and perhaps add an episode to the final three at fashion week.

Tim seems to love Candice’s look. That makes one of us.  Tim sees a bit worried that Ashley’s top and her pant (which I love as long as you are not fat) don’t work in harmony. I still think Ashley can pull out a win. I love homeboy’s dress. I love that he put his name in the 3D stuff. I love Edmond. I hope he wins. It’s hard for me to be unbiased because I just love everything he does for the most part. Tim is very concerned about Merline. Merline feels like she just got an Amber alert on her phone. Sure it looks like crap now, but somehow she seems to manage to pull through. Also, personal story, I am smart phone illiterate. So much so that I ordered one but can’t use any of the smart features because I can’t type in my gmail password on the tiny little keys. So it just sits on a side table in my living room. So the other night, I suddenly hear someone talking in my house. It’s not coming from the TV or my laptop. I’m ready to start shooting when I realize it is an Amber Alert from my phone. I had no idea that happened. You may laugh now.  Tim loves Kelly’s very literal interpretation. It is sort of avant garde if you like that sort of thing. It’s really anyone’s game.

Ashley is having trouble with her 3D prints. Candice’s gown is looking way better than I thought. I can’t believe Kelly didn’t go for a dramatic, architectural hairdo. I can’t believe no one did. I would have done a two foot tall stiff style of some sort.

The Runway

Mel B is the guest judge. How am I just now noticing that Merline is from Savannah! She has been a homegirl this whole time! I have to pull for her too now. It would be great to get two Georgia peaches through to fashion week!

Merline’s look is ridiculous, but she loves it and it is avant garde week and she seems to have fixed the issues that Tim Gunn had, so fingers crossed.

I love Edmond’s look. It’s actually a wearable dress that is gorgeous. He gave his model a stupid veil thing to wear on her face to make it seem more “avant garde.” I would have loved Edmond to use a gray fabric rather than black.

Ashley’s look actually made me say, “oh, wow!” when it came out. But not in a bad way. Ashley has had an advantage all season with her model, who I find to be incredibly hot. #GirlCrush  That said, she struggled to use her 3D pieces and she is unhappy with the cohesiveness of her look. I agree that the 3D pieces detract from her look. But I still really like it. Because, smoking hot model.

Candice’s gown does not move me. I hate the 3D print on her boobs. It’s a gorgeous gown that is marred by the inclusion of the 3d print. I think hers is the worst.

Kelly’s garment could have been a show stopper. But I was distracted by her model who seemed to be trying to hold the gown together with her hands. Maybe she just didn’t know what to do with her hands because they had to stay behind the dress. it distracted me.

When it come to avante garde, I am not a good judge. I’m just going to say my favorite was Edmond. My second favorite since it is avante garde would go to Merline.  I’m not really sure what the judges will do. With avant garde there is no telling.

Judges Reviews

Edmond makes up a great story about his dress. Heidi loves it. Mel B loves it. They all love it.

Kelly says that she didn’t like Kelly’s at first but she warmed to it and based on the inspiration, the like it. They think they did a good job getting the avant garde thing going.

Merline  they liked the style but it seems reminiscent of a dress from previous seasons. They like it and they expected more from Merline since she is the avant garde person. Mel B really liked the dress. Nina Garcia didn’t think it was avant garde at all. No really bad critiques but she didn’t win and could be in danger if they like Ashley’s.

Ashley really tries to hard sell her inspiration to the judges. Heidi says it walked beautifully. Perhaps she too has a girl crush on Ashley’s model?  Mel B says there is a cohesiveness problem. Nina doesn’t get the bridge connection, but she loved it. Somehow, Zac Posen compares it to the Tuareg’s which are my people!  Though Tuaregs never crossed my mind, I do see the color reference now that Zac pointed it out. Ashley seems safer than I thought. Ashley’s workmanship is strong. Zac is in love with this look.

Candice struggles on her pitch. Heidi loves it. She loves the crap on her boobs. Nina and Zac don’t think it is avant garde.  Zac does love her use of 3D printing and says in that regard it was the best in show. I strongly disagree. I think her 3D prints actually ruin the whole look. Mel likes this dress the best. I just got a good look at the bottom of the dress and it is fantastic. I love the gown I just wish the 3D crap was not on it.

During the upclose inspection, they love homeboy. They love Kelly. But Nina says she wishes the string weave would have continued in the back.  They like Merline in sort of a most improved sort of way, which make think she is going to be auffed and then saved. The judges love Ashley. But Mel B doesn’t. Mel B only likes the cape and says the rest in not cohesive. If cohesiveness is a problem, I’d say the cape is what should go. But that’s just me. Mel B’s favorite is Candice. The judges says hers is the best use of the 3D technology, so I guess she wins. I’m not going to be mad about it, because it is a beautiful style. I just hate the 3D part. But if the judges love it, then she should win because that was the whole challenge.  The judges keep stressing that everyone did such a good job it’s hard to send anyone home.  Foreshadowing a Tim Gunn save.

Kelly wins two challenges in a row. I am only surprised because they seemed to like Candice’s dress the best. Candice and Edmond round out the top three. Mel B has an upcoming event and asks for Candice’s dress. Candice is beyond thrilled.

That leave Ashley and Merline in the bottom. I think Tim will save either one, but I did say that last week as well. But I triple mean it this week!  I hate to bring up weight again but Ashley seems larger than when she started. As a fat chick myself, I sort of love that she is wearing a pleated skirt which could be the cause of looking larger with confidence. I’m still sort of getting used to my new ginormous body. So props to her for that.

Merline is auffed. 🙁 Merline is proud of herself for coming in fifth. And my DVR cuts off despite me trying to add minutes. Let me go see if Tim Gunn saved her.  It appears he did not.  I still say he has to play the save because there are too many episodes left! At least Merline was a good sport.

The alert on your phone reminded me of two separate incidences. I bought a land phone a few years ago and unbeknown to me it had talking caller I.D. The first call we got, the phone started telling me who was calling. Like you, I wanted to know who in the hell was in my house and almost went for a gun until I realized it was the new phone. I almost jumped out of my skin. Secondly, the first time I got an Amber Alert on my smart cell, again, I was unaware the phone had this feature. Instead of talking, I got the sound like the one we used to get on TV when the Emergency Broadcast System would do a test. Really loud. I immediately looked at the TV and when I realized it wasn’t coming from there….I didn’t know what in the hell was going on. Really baffled. Later when I was in the car, it started again. Almost ran off the road. This time I could tell it was coming from the cell ph. Upon checking it out, I found the alert. Your story brought back two funny memories for me. 🙂 I knew exactly how you felt.

I found out my phone had the Emergency Broadcast Alert feature from a weather app one day when we were moving my mother-in-law who had dementia into new senior housing and we were getting messages about both tornadoes and flash flooding at the same time… so do you evacuate to the basement or not? I had a young son who was slightly freaking out and a mother-in-law who could barely walk and whose brain was struggling, and we were new to the building, so we had a lot to figure out at once. Those phone alerts weren’t helping calm anyone down! But the funny thing was, my mother-in-law was great. Turns out she had gone to college in the mid west and tornadoes were no big deal to her. In a time when she was starting to lose herself, I loved when she would shine or suddenly be her old self.

In other news, I’m starting to really like this season. I always like it towards the end when it is just the better designers. I loved Tim Gunn freaking out when it was his friends they were designing for.

I liked Ashley’s pants, but they had nothing to do with the challenge. The cape looked like an Elvis cape. Hated the cape. I did not like the red and black dress because of the 3 d stuff. It made it ugly, and there is nothing avant-garde about a mermaid dress. Kelly’s dress was avante garde, and I think she deserved the won. But as far as a beautiful dress that somebody can actually wear, Anthony was the best. It was so smart for him to put his name on his 3 things, they can be his trademark in the future.

Amber alerts can override everything. We were at a fancy pants fund raiser gala in Augusta, Ga last week when 500 phones went off at one. Truly bizarre!

It was bizarre becaus the alerts came in staggered, varying by carrier. And then people started diving for their purses, pockets, etc out of sheer embarrassment since there was a speaker at the podium at the time. 30 minutes later some phones were still going off. Not sure whether somebody’s MeeMaw just didn’t hear it the first time or what…

The last Amber Alert here was repeated overnight about 10 times. Nothing could stop that damn thing!

Wow. Merline leaving really is a surprise. Maybe she is saved off screen and comes back nect episode as a surprise when Tim announces what the challenge is? Or the reunion is a 2-parter?

Maybe I am the confused one , but am I the only person that is very familiar with NYC that thinks that the point of the bridges being in different cities was the point of the designers and their outfits. I mean the style between Brooklyn and Manhattan would be different, each area has its own taste and style. I believe that the judges and the designers missed the the whole point of the bridge is being in different cities. I was actually shocked that they did not mention that in their review. everyone knows that the style is different in Brooklyn then if you was across the bridge back to Manhattan totally different styles both very nice. I don’t know about Queens at all.

The Manhattan Bridge goes from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge goes from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The Queensborough Bridge goes from Manhattan to Queens.

I really like Ashley and I am pulling for her.
But, damn, she makes it hard sometimes.
She is talented but I really didn’t like her work this week. It looked like formal wear for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders

Ultimately, I hope it is Edmond who wins. He has such a joyous appreciation. It shows in his work and his face.

Oh, Maisey, great comment. I especially like the “…formal wear for the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders”. Thanks for the morning laugh!

I think Tim is keeping his save for Ashley. I’m ready for her to go back to what got her there, and frankly I’m tired of her crying.

I think Edmond deserves to win it all. I think his designs are better than the others plus I believe he’s the one who will take the prized and run with the most. He has certainly shown that he has perseverance!

I’ll be happy with Kelly or Edmond. I don’t think Ashley can win, but would love to see her have a show in fashion week. Working on her own for a few months without the emotional pressures of getting it done in a day should help her break out and do some great stuff.

I thought there were too many elements to decide what the judges would pick. Bridge inspired? Best use of 3d print? Most avant garde? I was surprised that for avant garde challenge that both hair and makeup weren’t more creative.
I loved Edmund ‘ s dress but was distracted by the model’s ribs being so prominent.
Ashley ‘ s pants and top were great, didn’t like the cape but overall still cheering for her!
Can’t say much about Candice ‘ s dress, my disdain for her personality causes me to be harsh on her garments.

Candice has been pretty kind to her fellow designers, sharing both surplus materials and encouragement plus hugs. It’s her personal choices about her makeup and accompanying haircut that gives me pause, as she reminds me of a contemporary, goth-style Mommie Dearest, and it freaks me out.

Kelly’s dress was avant guard in the fabric itself. The cross wiring was lovely. The
extra pieces at the hips was overkill and made her model appear awkward from behind.

Ashley’s cape had so much potential. Heidi thought the appliqués were like razors and
to me I was reminded of an old Indian Chief.

Hey, Edmond…you win lots of gold stars for making breakfast for the gals. He’s a cutie✨

This was my favorite show this season for the designs everyone presented. Edmond’s was beautiful and so flattering and feminine. The soft red gown that Candice made fit like a glove, unless it was O.J. Simpson’s old water-contorted glove. Kelly really conveyed a sense of suspension and span, as well as intricacies.. Opposite to Mel B., I didn’t like Ashley’s cape at all and found her own self-critique to be accurate. There was a certain beauty to Merline’s dress, though perhaps it wasn’t seen by the judges as suitably experimental for the task. I am going to miss Merline a lot. Seeing Christian Siriano as a judge in the preview to next week’s show has me a little over the moon! To my surprise, I can see several fashion careers on the upswing from this season’s exposure, especially Edmond’s and Kelly’s. I’d love to meet Merline just because or who she is, as I admire her as an individual. If Edmond or Kelly win, with what I’ve seen so far, that would be wonderful, but my heart is with Edmond for the win.

I wish I was Marlene and could see in 3D when I walk.

I think Ashely should have gone home. I really liked some of her looks but her overall taste level is childlike. Her color or fabric choices are always slightly off. Her model is the only model I ever notice and I can’t believe she is not famous and in every ad. She walks great and has fantastic features. I think she sells Ashley’s clothes and makes them much better than they are. Ashley’s personality makes me like her.

My favorite is still Kelly. She gets better as time goes by and her ideas are always interesting. She is less stuck in a look than Edmond and Candice. Candice does her black, goth, corset stuff repeatedly. She does it well but it is boring me by now. Edmond makes fantastic gowns I would love to wear but they too are the same sort of thing in a different way. Kelly keeps doing weird shit that I wouldn’t predict. I think this is why the judges told Edmond and Candice they thought they could have done more.

I think that whoever is on the chopping g block next week will be saved for one more try. I always thought time would use his save on Ashley because she is so nice. I look forward to everyone’s runway show. Maybe it will be an all four people runway show again.
