One Of These People Is NOT A Drag Queen!

One of these is NOT a Drag Queen!
One of these is NOT a Drag Queen!

It’s Pride Weekend in Atlanta this weekend. Which is ridiculous because everyday is Pride Day in Atlanta.  Seriously, it was just last month that week had a pride weekend.  Sheree was there because she’s a… she’s someone who likes to sell you the opportunity to take her picture with your phone for $5.

Anyhoo, for some reason, this weekend we’ve painted rainbow crosswalks on an intersection and everything. Sadly, a monster storm is rolling in tonight and should last through tomorrow.

RHOA Nene teeth

Nene hosted a drag show today before jetting back to L.A. to do something on that Lip Sync show tomorrow night. What I want to know is, was there not a fifth person there who could hold a balloon? Did anyone show up? Also,  Nene’s drag queen like appearance surely isn’t enough to outweigh all of her homophobic comments on national TV. Why do gay events keep booking her?

Ooh, when I scrolled past that 2nd photo, I had flashbacks of Twisty the Clown. This photo was much more scary, though.

Gay events keep booking her because she’s a drag queen manqué (i.e., a female drag queen). She’ll alienate the entire community sooner or later though, I’ve no doubt.

Is it pride in Atlanta for real? In October? Uccch. Pride is supposed to be in June for a reason, people. Come on.

Here in Atlanta we have A LOT of gay pride. A LOT.NTTAWWT. We just had a pride event last month, We have the regular one in June. Seriously, every weekend there is something. But today they painted a rainbow cross walk. There was some discussion on the news about the fact it was temporary, I’m not sure if the city paid for it or just allowed it to be done. They are supposed to erase it in a few days. At this point, Atlanta is like, “fuck, might as well leave it. We are gayer than any other city in America. at this point. Let’s just leave it. It’s kind of pretty”

We love our gays in the ATL for the most part. The sweet church ladies have no idea what it means and just like rainbows. Everyone is happy.

All of the crosswalks in the Castro were rainbowfied a few years ago – kids love walking on them, and they subsequently widened the sidewalks to match their width. Seriously the best thing that’s happened here in a decade.

In Dallas, there is regular Pride in July (the national one everyone celebrates) but it’s kind of toned down, since the Dallas Pride Parade and attendant events are in September (which started in the 80s when a judge ruled we gays can have sex without going to jail. Yay Judge Buchmeyer!). October sees Southern Pride and also Latino Pride Festivals and Dallas Black Pride events. Why so many in the Fall? Tradition and the weather. Who wants to be outside in Texas in July?

We get a lot of pride here in Fort Lauderdale also (hello Wilton Manors). One of my friends asked me to go with him and his partner and I asked him that didn’t they just have pride. He sighed and said, “Jo, I’m so tired of being gay and proud!”.

Eric. that is what I thought, June but did not know for certain.

I read last year the the organizers in San Francisco said they wanted the Pride Parade to include all persons that had suffered from persecution.
Those words touched me and I thought it was extremely generous.
wasn’t it suppose to last a week?

        @calipatti:

I think Pride lasting a day/weekend/week varies greatly city to city; probably they have gotten longer in recent years.

It used to be just a day – always a Sunday – and at the end of June. Places have gotten away from that over the last 10-20 years as Pride celebrations have become more commercialized, and that’s what I detest the most. It used to be a parade and follow-up parties in “the gayborhood”. You would always run into rarely-seen friends in addition to the friends you’d see all the time. One felt a true sense of community.

Now the “festivals” have moved into larger and larger venues and have become all about corporate sponsorships, merchandise, and promotion, and this is the real reason so many cities have strayed from the tradition of having it in June. It’s: when is it most financially advantageous to have it? Well, I think tradition is important, but apparently I’m in the minority by thinking that.

I understand that it’s hot in the South in June, and I’m sure that’s played some role in the scheduling, but not a paramount one. In Miami, Pride is inexplicably in May. I promise it’s no cooler in May in Miami than it is in June! In Key West, where I lived for many years, they still have it in June, and I guarantee that Atlanta/Dallas/etc are not nearly as hot then!

The reason Atlanta Pride is in October is because the park that is the base of the festival was getting too much use during the summer, and was really suffering as a result (the largest green space in Atlanta had become a dustbowl). The choice was to find a new home (and there really is no other suitable venue) or to move the event to another time. The decision was made to move the event to October to coincide with National Coming Out Day. I personally am thankful for that decision. Outdoors in June in Atlanta is just dreadful.

As to your booking question, possibly the drag community knows something we don’t. Nene is one of their own, the jokes on us.

Oh my, are those her real teeth in that photo? Did someone photoshop them? I read the earlier post from the link and someone there talked about the teeth taking on a life of their own! Made me crack up!

That’s my question, too. Are those her actual teeth, and are they real? Do they come out at bedtime? How can anyone with teeth so huge close one’s mouth at night to be able to sleep comfortably? Or, as Margarett asked, is this a photoshopped joke? Somebody here might know and explain it , please, ’cause to me it looks like a horror movie. It’s scary. Also, poor Gregg, if he ever wants a blowjob.

Unfortunately those are her real teeth. Nene has been very public about the nervous system disorder that has altered her physiologically, some of the symptoms which include the enlargement of her teeth in various areas of her body, including vagina dentata (research those terms to learn more. Just devastating disease, it’s sad really). Allegedly.

Okay, after a brief search it seems that the “devastating disease” is a myth/folk tale. Thanks for making me laugh. (As a nurse, I know there are some unsettling things that can happen. You can research the term “terratoma” to learn more.)

@Margaret I saw some terratoma pictures once by accident. I’ll never be the same again.

Nene supports the LBGT community as well as she has the Detroit public school system; any gay man who admires that posuer deserves to be verbally eviscerated by her uneducated tounge.

    Atlanta has two prides

One is called black pride (its more urban and. Nothing but parties happens at the end of summer)

And then there is the official recognized pride in October .. Which has the parade and more daytime events not just parties…

As far as why the gay men keep booking NENE well they love her I mean she acts just like them

Labor day weekend is the National pride day in ATL…also, the rainbow colored sidewalks go perfectly with the gigantic ferris wheel in downtown ATL. It’s not odd if a city already has a ferris wheel.

marc, you are right. I don’t think Nene acts like a gay man or a straight man, or a lesbian or a straight woman for that matter. She acts like Nene and thank God there is only one like her. With the exception of her dwindling group of stands, any normal person wouldn’t want to claim her. You’re not alone. They definitely broke the mold when she was born, probably burned it and buried the pieces in separate, undisclosed locations to ensure there would be no possibility of another one lol.

Some folks will always chose fame over character. It too bad because isn’t the point of pride events to stand up for acceptance, tolerance, respect, and equality?

Nene thinks that “character” is someone an actor portrays, that leads to fame and getting her “coins”. Nene might be a character …. that was predicted in the book of revelation! But I’m not a bible scholar, so I might be wrong.
