Hello guests and welcome to American Horror Story: Hotel. This is a confirmation reminder for your reservation for your stay at the enigmatic Hotel Cortez for the next four months. We hope you are able to remain alive during your stay in one of the mystifying and haunted guest rooms. Just because you check in, it doesn’t guarantee that you will check out.
You might be greeted by The Countess, the fashionable, mysterious and seductive owner of the hotel. She has a seriously sexy thirst for drinking blood. How she acquires the vital plasma is an experience that you will have to see for yourself after you check in at the Hotel Cortez.
THESE AMERICAN HORROR STORY:COVEN RECAPS READ LIKE A NOVEL NO NEED TO WATCH THE SHOW!
Your visit may be cut short by the Ten Commandments Killer, a serial murderer that chooses his victims based on biblical teachings. You could end up dead stuffed inside a mattress, but at least your spirit has the option to stay for eternity.

As a guest you will enjoy your hotel stay if you have an addictive personality; especially if your vice is alcohol, drugs, sex, or violence. Please enjoy some libations at the hotel bar. You will be attended to with discretion by the fabulous cross dressing bartender, Elizabeth Taylor. You can call him Liz. The Hotel also has a very unique monster, the Addiction Demon. You will know him when you see him. He’s the terrifying man with no eyes or mouth that is wearing a nasty conical dildo that rotates like a drill bit. Sex with him can be bloody messy, but don’t worry because the hotel maid service is first class. Just ask “Hypodermic Sally” and her junkie pals. The hotel is a discreet place for living out your carnal desires. You might even be invited for some group sex with The Countess, but it could be last breath you ever take.
IF YOU MISSED GETTING YOUR FREAK ON, READ AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW! IT’S STORYTIME!
For those committed to the AHS franchise, the ones that have lived in the Murder House, escaped the Asylum, protected The Coven, and attended the Freak Show, you can now check into the Hotel, but don’t be late. With bloodsuckers, killers, sex, drugs, and broken dreams along with a stellar cast minus the Grande Dame, Jessica Lange, the AHS series will launch its boldest, goriest, sexiest, and most depraved continuation of the anthology when Hotel premieres tonight at 10 ET on FX.
Watch the AHS:Hotel show intro with new remixed spooky theme music at the top of the post. As usual it contains clues of what to expect this season. Don’t be too scared to check in and join us for the Hotel discussion below. If you want a hotel rendezvous, follow me on twitter at @Urethra_F . I’m a sure thing.

Awesome, UF! Looking forward to storytime!
If you’re a music lover like me here is a list of the music & which scene it played in during this episode. I can tell I’m gonna love the soundtrack this season. Everything in this list is my own music collection except two songs.
The Eternal by Joy Division
Agnetha & Vendela check in at Hotel Cortez then Iris escorts them to their room.
Body and Soul by Benny Goodman Trio
(played on the radio between the static)
Never Land (A Fragment) by The Sisters of Mercy
In Room 64, Gabriel does heroin when someone attacks him and begins to rape him; Sally walks down the hall to Room 64; Liz Taylor takes John to Room 64; Sally makes Gabriel give her affection as he dies.
Tear You Apart by She Wants Revenge
Donovan bathes as Elizabeth does cocaine. They dress, they then venture out to a movie in the cemetery where they flirt with a couple then bring them back to the hotel, they have sex then kill them.
Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus
Marcy shows Will and Lachlan Drake around Hotel Cortez, where in the penthouse where they run into Elizabeth & Donovan; Elizabeth sends Donovan off with Will while she shows Lachlan the playroom.
Downtown by Petula Clark
(Flashback, 20 years ago) Sally walks down the street as Donovan trails behind her; in her car, Iris tails Donovan as he follow after Sally, she watches as the two head into Hotel Cortez.
Hotel California by Eagles
(past) Sally dies in an alleyway; Iris walks back the room where she finds Elizabeth with Donovan; (present day) John packs his belongs and leaves home, then checks into Hotel Cortez.
Cool! I like it!
Argh!!! It’s Saturday and I just watched it again with my hubby who missed it cuz he got the late shift on Wednesday. Now I can’t get that song, “tear you apart” out of my head. Although the non radio version is what goes through my head cuz it makes more sense when I see the orgy/bloodbath scene.
Dark Thoughts I played the cd (She Wants Revenge) yesterday all day on repeat in the office, in the car, on my laptop. If you want to listen to the whole cd just go to youtube. It’s free.
I can totally see some of their other songs being used throughout the season.. “Written in Blood” , “Out of Control”. Been listening to them all day – I am a new fan!
I’m just as excited for the music choices as I am for the story line development & visuals of Hotel. So far thematically the music has been dark: Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, & Bauhaus. These are the dark synth wave music acts of the 80’s and it is one of my favorite genres of music. I”m gonna create a AHSHotel playlist for my iPod in preparation for all the great music, and I will for sure obsessively talk about the music here because it’s also such an important accompaniment to the story.
I have read nothing I just want to say yeah Ureatha Franklin ! I have missed you, are you comfortable snuggled up by TT’s radiator? Happy Halloween
I am in !
So excited!
16 more minutes can’t wait!!! I have been refreshing TTs page waiting to see you UF! So excited!
A drill bit dildo? I’M IN!
Vince meet me in the bar first… then we’re off to room #64….
I am at work reading TT as usual, and I actually shreiked when I saw this!! You have been missed Urethra!!! I will just be putting myself back together here, ignoring the “what a weirdo” glances from my co-workers until the actual blog is posted!!! =) I’m curious to see what your thoughts are to the first episode but I hope you feel the same as I do that Lady Gaga is a natural fit in the Hotel!!! =)
I am in! So happy you are making time to be our leader through the labyrinths of the hotel’s gory stories.
I LOVE YOU URETHRA! Thank you.
Welcome to the Hotel Cortez Hannah. Meet me at the bar! I’m chillin’ with Liz Taylor.
I tried to say how much I loved Liz and my comment wouldn’t take lol. Great minds.
I just realized an hour ago this premiered tonight! Have the encore recording right now and am about to start watching. So excited.
Holy Shit! This is the darkest thing I’ve ever seen… I’m extremely uncomfortable, what in the hell is in Ryan’s head- Forget it, I don’t think I want to know.
I was thinking the same thing. What a premiere – I saved on my DVR to rewatch and try to understand it all. What is in this man’s head that he could create these storylines then have actors and designers to recreate his fantasies. I only started watching last year following Urethra’s Freak Show reviews. Got so into it I watched the previous seasons on Netflix. UF thanks for making it all the more interesting with your depth of knowledge and writing abilities.
This premiere episode was by far the most depraved and best of series! My heart is still racing!
OH MY GAH GAH!
This role is perfection for her. She was so good, sexy, dark, & twisted. My kind of chick!
I couldn’t agree more. She totally brought it without making it a campy performance.
I love She Wants Revenge. I have all their records, and I was beyond thrilled that the show used the song “Tear You Apart” for the scene with The Countess & Donovan as they seduced & killed the young couple in that bloody murderous orgy. How fucking hot was that scene? You know you like it.
Very hot scene. The loud, industrial club music along with cocaine, the costumes and the sex (also… movies in the park), It reminded me of living in New York in the 80’s (minus the bloodletting). I’ll admit it… I was a wild child once upon a time.
I love dark shit like this. And I agree… Definitely looks to be the best season of the series to me.
I was a weekend Goth clubber in the 80’s. You are my people… My 1st job out of college took to me NYC regularly. NYC in the 80’s was so much fun & everyone was so free spirited there. I hope I never lose the brain cells that hold those memories.
Always in the village, unless there was a killer party in Brooklyn. My God! I am glad I am middle aged and secure in my life now. But those memories still give me a thrill, I must admit.
I must agree liked it
Wow. I mean Wow. That was intense. I get the addiction theme and the last half hour suggested a deeper storyline so I am totally in.
There’s the obvious drug & sex addiction, but I think those spooky ageless kids have a sugar addiction besides a thirst for some blood. That candy room made me want to find a nickel gum ball machine and smack away.
Though pretty to look at, I’ve never had a thing for Matt Bomer before, but DAYUM he was hot as fuckity fuck in AHSHotel. From now on he’s Matt Boner.
Oh he’s been Matt Boner to me. Welcome!
YAY my twitter BFF is in the Hotel… Love ya man!
Recording it for delectable watching this weekend, Thank you, Ms. Franklin!
Definitely off to a great start. It says something about me, though, that the drill fucking didn’t disturb me but I had to turn away whenever anyone shot up.
Like all Ryan Murphy shows, its fun to catch the reference/homages/rip-offs – we’ve already seen references to The Shining and Children of the Corn, we had our Hotel California play, etc. I honestly thought Iris would turn out to be a Re-Animator type and we’d bring some Lovecraftian horror into the mix – who knows, they still might.
The first episode acquitted last season well. Let’s hope we don’ fall into the same hole as last season, where imagery reigned over storytelling.
Also tonight I think the tone with the Ten Commandment killer plays homage to the move the serial killer movie Seven with Kevin Spacey. He killed base on the 7 deadly sins.
Plus I got a dash of Silence of the Lambs in that scene when the little girl found those two disemboweled guys hanging very much like they were on a crucifix… and when Iris blended those organs with wine in the blender. Something that Hannibal Lecter would do.
The 1st paragraph in the above reply got mangled. I was trying to say that Hotel paid homage to the movie Seven… Besides the obvious religious overtones, but If I remember correctly wasn’t there a murder by a phallic razor knife dildo in that movie too?
Yes there was. I’ve seen Seven like a hundred times. It was in reference to the deadly sin lust.
That was extremely disturbing and very unnecessary. It ruined the rest of the episode for me
UF, i cant wait for your recaps. I normally dont watch this genre but the talent is justifyly some of the best acting.
Just in time for the fall/winter season. Whos going to hold my hand????
Though I wish I could, I doubt I’ll be able to recap this premiere episode. So discuss or ask anything you want here. I’ve checked in, but I can’t quite leave the #AHSHotel.
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the premiere. I gotta say IMO: best premiere since Asylum.
Group sex….Yes
Bloody group sex….No
The Countess & Donovan…. #RelationshipGoals
Well said!
I know lightning is going to strike me, but I didn’t even think of Jessica Lange once the episode started. Y’all I know I love Queen Jessica Lange and worship the ground she walks on, but I can’t even imagine a role for her in this episode.
You know who the real Queen is of the Hotel Cortez? Not Lady Gaga… it’s Dennis O’hare as Liz Taylor. He is fucking brilliant in this role. I can’t wait for his back story.
I was most excited to meet Liz Taylor & she didn’t disappoint. And that was before I found out that Denis O’Hare got character tips from my all time favorite drag queen Alaska Thunderfuck!
Lady, that scene when Liz was escorting the Detective down the hallway with his billowing caftan fluttering like a butterfly down the hall was so beautifully weird. #Sashay…
The Countess just might have dethroned the Queen.
What about the childrens’ candy filled playroom? Those larger than life video screens on the wall while playing Tetris & Ms. Pacman with all that candy. Those spooky children looked sadly soulless on a sugar high.
Are they dead or alive? I’m confused.
Not sure, but the detective’s son Holden was kidnapped years earlier, maybe 10 years I saw someone say. If so, Holden hasn’t aged 10 years. That was Holden in the play room.
alive but do not age
Did you all notice what the bright pink neon sign in The Countess’ penthouse said?
“Why are we not having sex right now?” Bitch stole my pick up line from the 90’s.
This episode has me feeling some sort of way. I like it because it reminds me of season 1, my favorite. I hope it has found its way back to horror.
I was scared when that God-forsaken creature crawled out of the mattress and that was in the opening scene. I wonder if that red headed maid is connected to the red headed maid over at Murder House.
Murder House was my favorite as well (although I really think this will top that). The maid in Murder House was Frances Conroy (whom I love), but I didn’t see her name on the credits, which bums me out. But Mare Whitingham (St. Elmo’s Fire), the new maid, is a great actress. Has she been on any other seasons? I can’t remember.
I also really love Lilly Rabe and was hoping she’d be back.
Mare Whitingham was in 2 episodes of S3 Coven. She played the incestuous & sexually abusive mother of the character Kyle played by Evan Peters. She also was in 1 episode of Freak Show for S4. She played Pepper’s sister. She framed her infant’s killing and had her locked up in the Asylum.
Lily Rabe will be back for Hotel, but only for 1 or 2 episodes max. I already know her character and which episode, but I don’t want to spoil just yet.
For a clue to Mare’s character, I present a name to investigate: Gordon Northcutt. and apparently Lily’s going to have a “Monster” of a role as well.
OMG, I love Mare Winningham–another amazing scene stealer.
A new meaning, more precisely a new visual, to getting in bed.
How did the police officer’s missing kid end up being in the children’s playroom and being one of the kids that run the halls at the hotel? How is he connected to the hotel? Does the 10 Commandment killer live there?
Like you I have questions questions questions…. but no answers yet…
Is Sally a ghost? Did she survive the 10 story push out of the window? Does she manifest the Addiction Demon Monster?
I believe Holden disappeared in 2010. I think that the year that flashed before the carnival ride scene.
What the fuck is the matter with everyone? NO ONE HAS MENTIONED THE SUPREME JESSICA LANGE! We are gong to DIE if we don’t recognize her absence!
All hail Jessica. Yes I love Jessica, too. But the writers and cast seem to be okay without her. I am hoping Lilly Rabe shows up.
I am on a bit of an AHS high. That show was fucking great tonight. I am going to have to rewatch it.
She does but I think she is only in 1 or 2 episodes max.
I have to admit I was disappointed that she didn’t sign on to do another season…she played sick & twisted so very well! I enjoy how versatile Denis O’Hare is…I could just go on I like them all really
Sally to the junkie hotel guest as he’s getting raped by the Addiction Demon:
Tell me you love me
Say it
Say I love you Sally And it will all go away
Say it
I love you Sally
Say it again
Say it again
I love you Sally
Then the Demon disappears.
Does this dialogue hint at wtf is going on with Sally? Does she manifest the raping Addiction Demon? Besides drugs is this what fills her void? ….. LOVE? Is her need to be loved her addiction?
Isn’t that the reining school of thought? That the lack of love is what fuels addicts? Now, while that scene was gritty in a beautiful sort of way, I don’t think love can cure Sally.
What was beautiful was that perfectly timed tear stream that fell from her eye. That lady can act!
I so agree with you, UF. Sarah Paulson’s sheer pain was tangible in that scene. It was quite moving.
In Twin Peaks, the entities from the Black Lodge feed off of others pain and suffering (using the word “garmonboza” and the visual of cream corn. It’s David Lynch at almost his Lynchiest – Lost Highways was Lynchier, but I digress). I have the feeling it’s the same for the residents of the Hotel – once you choose (consciously or not) to reside in the hotel you either feed off of others or become fodder. Hence, the residents are addicted to the pain of others and feed the addiction cycle and theme.
Also the Countess & Donovan seduction & orgy murdering scenes reminded me so much of the highly stylized 1983 vampire movie THE HUNGER with Catherine Deneuve & David Bowie. I was in high school when that came out, and it is still one of my favorite movies. It was a mix of avant-garde fashion & blood thirst, just like in AHSHotel.
In your description of all the show has to offer, you you forgot to list your best-on-the-net recaps. I can hardly contain my anticipation.
Thanks Sequoia….
I don’t think it has been 10 years since Holden’s kidnapping. His sister was at the shooting gallery game and looks only about 4 years or less younger than present. I can’t swear to it, but think they showed the year on screen at the top of the kidnapping flashback as 2010 or 2012. I bet Holden is alive and the other 2 kids are ghosts for play mates.
I thought Sally has to be a ghost but in TT’s Couples Therapy recap, she says there is a live guy that fell 16 stories.
I think one of the text messages the detective, Holden’s Dad, received from the killer said he is in room 64, or a phone call. I already forget which, it seems like that room is the vortex of evil. The door peephole looked more like it was for seeing inside instead of out.
I was confused about what time span was implied for the activity in 64. I know when the Kathy Bates characters son OD’d it was a flashback. Were the Swedish girls and subsequent events in 64 supposed to be identifiable in time by the music? As I was watching, it felt like 2 days. I kept thinking one bunch was going to walk in on dead people and blood everywhere from the last murders. The magic maid not having been there yet.
I need to smarten up to watch this show.
No Jessica Lange was announced & expected but NO Fran Conroy is absurd & shocking! Great post Urethra; thanks for taking the time to recap.
And we wonder why our society is going to hell, and kids are confused? All of this crap is terrible for mind and soul, and feeds into addiction, imo. Despicable, all the way to the bank. Yeah. Bloody despicable. Thinking it is great to see a young couple are killed in an orgy? Even in a horror show? Do you know what this graphic gore does to the minds of young people? VERY BAD.
That’s why you don’t let children watch it. I would hope that teenagers know the difference between reality and creative fiction.
Btw, if you knew you were opening yourself up to unknown possible horros by have group sex with total strangers or losing your soul to addiction, would you think twice?
Drug addicts and serial murders are usually horror movie officianidos from an early age. There is no way to keep your kids away from all the junk out there. This is poisonous stuff, and young minds, and certain weak psyches are impressionable. Not necessarily moved to violence, but maybe to kinky and unhealthy activities. This stuff is negativity laced with sadism, just like the vampire is about nothing more than murder. This is not good.
Puddy there’s nothing wrong with sadism, kinky & “unhealthy activities” as long as you use a safe word that is no longer than two syllables.
Urethra’s new safe word is “Puddy”
“Urethra’s new safe word is “Puddy”” The best!! 🙂
Puddy did quickly come around to the whole safeword concept very quickly when UF appeared to be her only ally, Which is surprising since he is the superfan of the show that is corrupting young minds and causing the swift decline of civilization as we know it.
Puddy I don’t know even know what to say except fortunately I am of sound mind, and society is lucky that I can differentiate fiction/fantasy from reality. I may be slightly dark sided, but I’m a good sane person with an open mind.
Urethra, you say there is nothing wrong with sadism, kinky, and unhealthy activities, as long as long as you use a safe word that is no longer than 2 syllables? Are you serious? So we are all just about the “feel good” culture, ” do what feels good, and you’ll be happy?” Do anything that makes you feel good, why stop? Push the envelope, feel even better? Isn’t it one’s right to do as one prefers? There are no “fair” rules, therefore it is good and justified? And at that point, who gives a hoot about anyone else? Every sadist needs a masochist, and that is not a good position to be in.
Puddy, stay away from Shakespeare!
I’d like to hear the stats supporting the statement that drug addicts are often horror movie fans from a young age lmao
Yes Puddy I’m dead serious. It is difficult to grunt two words longer than two syllables with a ball gag in the mouth.
This may be my favorite thing anyone has ever written here. “Every sadist needs a masochist, and that is not a good position to be in. ~Puddy” Ten Tamara Tattles Tokens for that gem.
Puddy? What are kids confused about these days? What would you say the overall theme of this season is?
I’m still waiting to hear about what kids are confused about and if you understand the theme of the season….
TT, I think you are great, and love your blog, but I really don’t care about finding a theme in the midst of all of that. Shows like this. imo, just add to our mass desensitization, which is a horrendous problem. I know many of the raver kids who watch Horror Story, and they are not in a good place, and see no hope for themselves in society. I think our “culture” is saturated with desensitization and it is not helping our children, or any of us, theme or no, while ppl like Gaga bank it. We need more of “It’s A Winderful Life” and the inspirational movies of yore, which are almost non existent. Just my opinion, and of course ppl will disagree.
Puddy, if you don’t understand the theme of the show your criticisms are meaningless. Why are you watching something you feel so strongly about? And if you are not watching, how can you hold such strong feelings?
The entire season is about addiction and the darkness involved with addiction. It’s certainly not glorifying any of things you are on your moral high ground about. In fact, it seems that you are in full agreement with Ryan Murphy. Except you don’t realize that because you don’t know what you are talking about.
On the other hand, I was traumatized by watching an extremely realistic and graphic scene of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. For some reason, shows like AHS don’t have a negative affect on me.
So, I guess it evens out?
On the other hand, I was traumatized and had nightmares from watching a very realistic and graphic scene of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
But shows like AHS don’t seem to bother me. Maybe because I know they are fictional?
Oops. Sorry for the double post. I got a server error the first time.
I have never watched the series. Last season I read UF’s recaps and was drawn in. UF, I am so glad you are recapping again!
I watched the premier and it was fantastic. It drew you in right away and left you with so many questions. Love Kathy Bates and Lady GaGa. Lady GaGa doesn’t even need to speak, she conveys it all by emoting. Now my only problem is making sure my daughter is safely in her room when I watch it.
Thanks Angel, so glad you’re back in for AHS this season. Though I would like to regularly recap this season, I can’t make any promises because of work. My life/schedule has changed and I may only be able to do a few of episodes. Unfortunately I don’t have time to recap this premiere episode…. But I still plan to contribute something so that we all can have a place here to talk about AHS but without 3000 word recaps.
I’m jealous. I want to watch this.
As for the critics of those who DO watch and enjoy these programs, they need to lighten up. Your remote DOES have an off button.
Before I even read the comments I want to say YASSSSS!! I am so fucking excited!! UF I’m ready!!!! #toolrape #bloodbathfourway #gaga
Hey Tusla… Nice to see you again you sick mofo! I’m dying at your hashtags.
Whoa Urethra! You reign supreme in this twisted hotel. My heart is racing! I am going to start singing the hymns I learned in Sunday school as a kid (just to keep me safe).
Great post and well put together!
Urethra Franklin you have been missed! Watching last night freaked me out in the best way ever! Can’t wait for more! And of course your recaps!!
I can’t believe I watched the whole thing. I wish I could just watch the police man’s part and Kathy Bates checking people in.
I can’t believe you watched the whole thing. I thought you’d be out with the scene of the couple nailed to the headboard with eyes & tongue plucked out.
O.M.G.
TT, you are full of good surprises. I was sure you had sworn off this show but you know you want to be one of us. #coolkids
I looked away during the eyeballs and such scenes. I somehow didn’t get where the organs for the drink Kathy Bates was making came from. As long as I am not trying to eat, gross stuff doesn’t bother me, but if I am I will totally puke.
I wanted to see Gaga. Bad. And I want to be a cool kid, but I’m not really cut out for it. That’s what UF is for.
I don’t think Sarah Paulson’s acting is very consistent this season (and I love her.)
I’d probably have sex with Matt and Gaga and another hot guy even it meant I’d die in a pool of blood. Okay not really, but DAYUM.
Best way to watch a graphic horror is with a crocheted granny blanket over your head. Still will know what happens without so many gory details. Helps keep your spine warm in the event of an unexpected shiver.
Tamara- I have to laugh…
“I looked away during the eyeballs and such… I didn’t get where the organs for the drink came from”.
When you put it like that, it really is fucking gross. I’m not sure why some are interested in the macabre. However, I only find fiction interesting. Scary movies and such. Anything real would freak me out and horrify me.
I’m super glad you were able to soldier through it. I hope you will keep watching it with us.
This certainly does seem to be the most gory and disturbing season.
I’ve never seen one episode of any of the AHS seasons. I’m a giant wuss. This sounds absolutely terrifying, but…intriguing.
Do they ever show reruns during the day? Maybe at noon? When there is not a bit of darkness in my house?
No, they will never show this during the day. I’m surprised they were able to show as much at they did at 10:00 p.m. It’s not that its really scary and keeps you on the edge of your seat, it’s that it’s disturbing in many ways.
just dvr it 🙂 or maybe they’re on fx on demand.
Scary as all hell. The lobby is carpeted with the pattern from the hallways of the Overlook. Urethra if you need someone to peel your grapes before dropping them to you let me know the pleasure would be all mine. Hope you’re in a Jeannie bottle you deserve way better than a radiator with chains. Thank s.
THANK YOU TD!!!!!!
I forgot to share this tidbit of information. The carpet in the AHSHotel lobby pays homage to The Shining’s Overlook Hotel carpet. It’s the same pattern but in a larger scale. The premiere episode did a breathtaking job of showing off the lobby carpet. The minute I saw it I recognized it and knew the director wanted to make sure we noticed.
UF, i didnt see this posting until today. That said…WHAT A GREAT PREMIER!!!!! As always so much to see. I did get a The Shining vibe from the hotel. Gaga is a great addition to the family, too. As i watched i couldnt help thinking of what/how your recap would play off from the show, so much for you to work with. Its going to be a good season, its already my favorite first episode, knocking Asylum to #2
Steve I’m so glad to you see check into the Hotel Cortez! I said the same thing about this being my favorite 1st episode from the entire series. Besides The Shining there was so many other references.
How about the scene where The Countess & Donovan seduce that young couple at the outdoor movie. It was playing a Bela Legosi film. I’m sure that’s some sort of hint of what is to come. I kinda suspect that a bunch of these characters are dead undead.
Quite certainly this is horror on a much higher level. Gone are the moral messages of the silver screen. Quasimodo ringing bells declaring oh to be made of stone like thee. Still makes me cry.
UF,that wasnt Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, that was the original Nosferatu, the first vampire movie. That was a drill on the dude? I thought “unicorn” and DAMN!!! Then the fourway and Lady Gaga in black undies and silver pasties, yep its going to be a good show!
Thanks for the correction. Good to know, because I love all the details.
Nosferatu is also an interesting reference to use. I think The Countess is a least a century old… I wonder if she will have a flashback to the black & white silent film era.
The Countess is based on Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian (no pun) royal who bathed in blood to not age. I live how they weave reality into the storylines. Think about the ten comandments and which apply to whom
Steve that whole bathe in blood thing for beauty seems so overused since it was used for plot development in Coven with Delphine & Marie Laveau.
Remember last year when Freak Show was on and Ryan Murphy teased us that a clue for Season 5 was on the coffee cup– the top hate & cane? He said the clue represents something “arcane” that will be the main focus for S5. We all speculated for weeks discussing what it could mean. So far I haven’t seen anything to fit that clue yet.
I didnt really buy into the top hat stuff, just added to the speculation. But, when the hotel was built it was upscale so in later episodes we will see the flashbacks to when men wore top hats and tails to events. I think the countess will be closer than delphine to the bathory story, didnt RM say he wouldnt do vampires? At least in the popularized sense?
Hey, did anyone catch twisty the clown on the scenes from upcoming episodes?
YESSSSSSSS I saw that twisty-esque teaser.
Oh, man….Now I really need to start investing in the DVDs. I miss this show so much!
I made it maybe 30 minutes in & had to change the channel. I lasted that long, because I kept thinking people are raving about this, it must be great, but itI couldnt handle it.I found it disturbing.
I get it Katie. I am sort of hoping it eases up after the first episode. I think you could tell the same scary story without so much gore. I must admit though that I didn’t think too many of the really gory scenes lasted that long. The first one was long and I just typed away on my laptop and the blood shooting everywhere out of the necks of the two lovers who fell victim to the Countess and her hot man was almost ridiculous bad with the gravity defying blood spurts.
Perhaps you could watch The Blacklist so I will have someone to talk to about that. I won’t have the chance to watch either of the two new episodes until the weekend. You know, barring some HW getting arrested.
Thank you! I had my fingers in my ears and my eyes closed during the drill rape scene. It just seems the show is a gore/shock fest and I didn’t get much of story out of it. I suppose I have lost my taste for such stuff. Used to love it. Ah, well. I will just read here and leave the torture, rape, and bloodbaths for the less faint of heart.
OMG, I signed in to read this awesome recap and now I can never leave!!!! Thanks UF :). Happy AHS Day everyone!
Lisamia, Shakespeare is a false analogy, on so many levels.
I watched it last night – I was so stressed!!!! Love it! I love all of it!! Nosferatu is my favorite movie of all time and I loved the Sisters of Mercy song. This is gonna be a great season. It was super creepy. A couple of times. I had to pause it and take a couple of breaths and tell myself, “It’s just a TV show…” (or is it????) Too bad I;m watching it alone, but knowing y’all are watching it to makes me feel a tad bit safer…
Not a good analogy? Please, gouging out eyes? Ghosts? Out damn spot. Witches… Have you read or seen any Shakespeare? AHS is quite the modern version. In Shakespeare’s time, those plays were done in the public theaters. They were what people did for entertainment. Oh and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ dealt with greed, suicide, and alcoholism. All quite bright happy smiley themes.
Dear Tamara:
You can intellectualize garbage all you want to by saying that it has a theme against addiction, or whatever, but vulnerable minds are tazed by the horror and the orgies and it is desensitizing. Young people are impacted by the negative, with or without your fake theme. There are many other story lines that would actually be more effective in the fight against addiction, sans all the gory titillation. And by the way, you don’t win an argument by declaring that someone does not know what they are talking about. That is crude, rude, and an indication of your arrogance, and that your own position is hollow. Oh RIGHT, you are getting paid to cover this crap!! Got to love that profit motive. It is transparent that you feel the need to justify your blogging this ugliness, and kiss Ryan Murphy’s ass, but wasn’t that Nene’s last job? I was wondering what exactly you were made of. Now I know. Not coming back, so whatever you write, I wont be here to read anymore of your nastiness.
Puddy, AHS isnt for children, hence the TV-MA rating before the show starts. Why would you let kids watch anyway? Kids are slammed with violence on TV from the time they wake up until they go to bed, why is AHS going to “taze?” them any worse than the other violent shows?
Dear Puddy,
Understanding the concept of theme is something that is usually taught at the end of fourth grade. It’s not a deep intellectual concept. As for a bit of vocabulary lesson, “tazed” is not a word. I double checked because it would be great for a good game of Scrabble. Young minds are not supposed to be up at 10 p.m. on a school night watching Hotel. If they are, their lack of parenting is the far greater problem.
You are correct, you don’t win an argument by telling someone they don’t know what they are talking about. It’s pretty much impossible to win an argument when arguing with someone who has no idea what the topic is. That is why I asked you twice if you had any idea what you were talking about. Like the concept of theme. In the previous three series of AHS, Murphy has delved into the world of the misunderstood, the unloved, and the outcast. This season he is exploring another fringe group, the addicted. Whether the addiction be drugs, sex, or deviance, none of the addicts seems destined for a happy ending.
You also are incorrect about several other things. I do not cover this show, because I don’t like Horror shows. I do not blog about and I generally each season (except for Coven, which I liked a lot) I try to take a peek so that I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT if I want to comment here (something you should try). This is Urethra Franklin’s baby.
And now if you don’t mind I’m going to go cash my TRUMP CHECKS that Ryan Murphy sends me every week for not watching or blogging about his shows.
xo

Off topic but ive always been partial to the dinosaur name Patricia (i think) gave you
Tea-Rex. 😉
Puddy is right. It’s all Ryan Murphy’s fault that our youth are nothing but drug addicts and serial killers. And here I thought it was all R.L. Stine’s fault for all his scary monster filled Goosebumps Books. Or maybe it’s Steven King fault for writing horror books. Before that who wrote scary books? Oh yeah, Shakespeare. It must be his fault.
Thank the Lord Puddy has shown me how to be good mom. I will immediately stop letting my six year old watch AHS. She can watch reruns of Games of Thrones instead.
Don’t worry y’all, I will NOT let her watch anything Real Housewives. That poop is reserved for mama only.

Puddy is allowed his/her own opinion without name calling, and we all can respectfully disagree. Different strokes for different folks.
SHE STARTED IT!, UF! Besides she is never, ever, ever getting back together with us so WHO CARES? You always yell at me for being mean to your tards here. But she doesn’t even watch or like the show!
Can I have no fun at all? /pouts.
Had to watch again because I may have missed something the first time when my eyes might have squinted or closed. Noticed the new owner’s son repeatedly bouncing a ball another shining connection?
Ok, just watched it again. This time I want to add that I like the way Ryan Murphy showed us Matt Bomer tush naked but had Lady Gaga’s tush covered. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen more male nudity than female in a scene. And I appreciate Lady Gaga’s meaty tushy. Her finance is a lucky man.
Then I believe the addiction demon is female. When it pranced out of the shadows it had female legs. Yeah, that would also explain the strap-on…
Dark Thoughts, if the addiction demon is female and Sally is a ghost, did we see the manifestation of the good (say I love you Sally and it will stop) and the evil that resides in Sallys soul?
Thank you for asking.
Well…I think Addictika (my name for the addiction demon) maybe one of the old timers that have been there since “the dawn of time”. She is ageless and has infested an infinite number of souls. I think Sally is part of her being instead of the other way around.
I believe Hotel Cortez is a place made evil. Now the how, when, and why is what I hope the season answers. Then again, Ryan Murphy always leaves plot holes in his wake so I’ll be happy with 2 out of 3.
Love the name Addictica! Maybe is Lily Rabe. Okay, praying it’s Lily Rabe.
At the very least I thought the actor under all that white garish skin bodysuit was female because of the feminine think frame of the Demon, but it didn’t occur to me it was a female character. Interesting.
Sally told him HE likes it better when you scream though. That part trips me up, but its fun to speculate. I think the actor is a man

Dear Tamara:
A friend informed me of your latest “rah, rah” attack, when the person is not expected to be there to respond, post. Heart of lion, you have, and such a sense of fair play. Steve is right about you, You are a “Tea Rex”, reptilian, and carnivorous, with a brain the size of a pea. Wow. Must have struck a nerve. Take some anger management classes. Thank you, Urethra, for your tolerance of and encouragement of different points of view.
LOL. A friend informed you… I’m quite familiar with the behavior of people who run off screaming that they are never coming back. They continually refresh and refresh and refresh waiting for acknowledgement. And here you are again. In a forum for a show you hate. On a website run by someone who is simply trying to make you a more informed citizen of the world. Don’t be so adverse to learning things, Puddy.
Oh an thanks for the maniacal page views. Ryan Murphy is going to be so happy with me I might get a new car!
Right back at you, TT!
Puddy, dont try and put your veiws in MY mouth! Tea Rex is the ultimate form of respect I have for TT. If you mattered, you would know why. I trust her words and know how much she puts into this for US readers.
Steve is Patricia a commenter here or that lady from that Bravo show? Tea Rex is kinda hilarious. So many layers to what it could mean.
During arias trial part one we used Jinkasaurus for Jean Casares who covered the trial. TT wanted a dinosaur name too so a commenter then gave her Tea-Rex. I took it as TT being THE source for Tea…and Shade. The posts are always accurate and enjoyable, and thats why I stick around. And AHS UF your recaps too. 🙂
You know, T-Rex were the king and queen of their world, in their time.
Tea-Rex. I like it.
