We have a new recapper in town, folks! A big thanks to “the other Tamara” for taking on HTGAWM.
So this week we start off with a fast forward of Wes running into the woods and a gunshot going off in the background. We see Conner kneeling over a bleeding and dying Annalise. Thanks for that scene. None of the interns seemed particularly panicked. Maybe because this would be their second killing so they are all old pros?!?!
Annalise’s case of the week: Hapstall Case
The siblings are now facing a new charge: killing their Aunt. When Annalise goes to see them at the police station both lie and say they had been at the house all night. Frank uses his connections to get a copy of the sealed warrant. That’s when it’s revealed that the brother’s DNA was found in the car with the dead Aunt.
Wes is sent in to be the “puppy” and find out why the sister lied for the brother and where he was that night. Bonnie confronts the brother who admitting being out on a jog. She lies and says there is video footage of him being a block from where they found his aunt. He is denying this and claims he is being framed. Michaela and Conner use Oliver to hack into the Philadelphia PD database were they discover that the police ran two DNA tests at the crime scene. The first test didn’t come back with anything so the PD deleted it, planted the brother’s DNA, then ran the test again. Annalise is able to use this at their arraignment to get the charges dropped. She sends the siblings home with the warning that if they ever lie to her again she will fire them.
Nate’s Hearing
The main focus of tonight’s episode is Nate’s hearing. We start off with The DA going in hard about Eve and Annalise knowing each other. Sinclair, the DA, seems like a real bulldog. Probably someone the real life Juan Martinez would like and be friends with.
Can we take a quick minute and talk about what a pussy Asher is for telling the DA about Eve and Annalise’s friendship in the first place. I mean, what the hell!!! The guy clearly does not have any loyalty to Annalise.
Anyway, the judge basically doesn’t see a connection and tells Sinclair to move on. So Sinclair calls Annalise up to the witness stand. She starts going in on Annalise from the start. Calling her a hostile witness and then as Conner says ” slut shaming” her for sleeping with Nate. Things start to get pretty heated and Annalise is acting as her own lawyer on the witness stand. She’s calling objections like she’s the lawyer and not the witness. Finally, Annalise looses it and starts going off to Sinclair. Which in all honestly, would not be allowed to happen in real court. I mean, the judge would be banging her gavel and ordering Annalise to hold her tongue, and what not. But this is TV, so we get to see Annalise going off on her tangent while on the stand. This is exactly what Sinclair wanted. She points out to the court that Annalise obviously has quite the temper and is more than capable of murder! This was a little stretched for me because Annalise is supposed to be this big time lawyer so she should have known that Sinclair was just trying to agitate her. She should have been able to keep her composure.
Nate refuses to lie on the stand. So Eve has to come up with a new plan to defend him and unfortunately for Annalise, it’s not going to be any easier on her. Eve accuses Annalise of murdering Sam herself. Eve says that Annalise was mad that Sam was ruining the sham of a marriage that they had. She killed Sam, ran off to sleep with Nate to create an alibi, played the grieving widow for the cops, all while having someone plant Nate’s fingerprint to frame him. Little does Eve know how very true almost all of that is. Annalise is quiet on the stand and won’t defend herself.
That night Annalise is at home getting drunk and being nasty to poor Bonnie. Last season we all talked about how Bonnie was possibly in love Annalise and so far that theory hasn’t been disproven. She has a strong loyalty to Annalise. But Annalise has been nothing but rude and condescending to her since she discover Bonnie killed Rebecca. Bonnie insists that she really did kill Rebecca to take care of Annalise. The same way Annalise took care of her. Bonnie claims that she can never forget that she “owes” Annalise. But Annalise is drunk and saying that she didn’t save her. That Bonnie and all the rest of them need saving from her. She claims that if she is locked up they will finally all be safe from her.
The next day Nate’s case is thrown out. The judge says that much of the hearing was spent “focused on the peccadilloes of Ms Keating” (I’ve personally never heard the word peccadilloes. So I looked it up and the meaning is: ” a small mistake or fault that is not regarded as very bad or serious” So now I know a new word and feel a little bit smarter! ) The judge goes on the explain that she isn’t sure that she knows who’s preliminary hearing it was. Sinclair did such a good job of making Annalise look like a liar that she needs to start over and be able to prove who the real suspect is. So Nate is free to go home.
We also get the weird scene of a random guy (Levi) approaching Conner and Michaela at the courthouse. He’s hitting on Michaela pretty hard. But all I’m getting is some sort of creep factor. Also, when is Michaela going to tell the rest of the group that she texted back “The Number?”
That evening Eve comes over to apologize for going so hard on Annalise. They talk about how real their love was and how much they mean to each other. Annalise said she was scared and that’s why she ran from their relationship. Then we get a hot make out scene of Annalise and Eve. The next morning Eve invites Annalise to come to New York. Nate sees them kissing goodbye from his car.
Speaking of hot, Frank and Laurel have quite the scene. Laurel comes over for some hot sex and after getting her all worked up and turned on, Frank drops her! Telling her that he is not a Gigolo and if she wants to get any of his goodies, she needs to get to know him. Oh snap!! Laurel is stunned at this rejection. I’d like to get to know Frank! He looks like he’s good at really naughty things. Just saying…..
Wes goes home to see that all of Rebecca’s things are being thrown out. He takes one picture that shows Rebecca smiling and with her friends. Levi is in the picture. He’s also currently on a date with Michaela. So is he “The Number?” He has to be, right?!?
Asher confronts Sinclair for putting him in such a crappy spot. She drops the bomb that she will be the prosecutor on the Hapstall sibling case!
We end with all of the interns running back into the mansion to get Conner. Everyone is calm and saying they need to leave because the police will be showing up any minute. Conner is worried that Annalise is dying! Which makes me think maybe they didn’t kill her after all and it’s supposed to look like she’s dying when the police get there?!?! So many questions. As they are all running from the mansions they pass the dead body of……….Prosecutor Emily Sinclair!!!
Dun dun dun
Thanks for the great recap! I’m hooked on this show.
Thanks Tamara Missy. I needed a recap for last week. I was distracted a bit while watching and when it was done, I felt confused. I guess I still am. Sinclair said she will prosecute the siblings on the Hapstall case, I thought the charges were dropped l, after they found the evidence was a setup by police.
I still like the show but less than the early episodes last season. I guess I don’t even like most of these characters anymore. I hang on to find out Wes’ real back story. Also, what’s with Bonnie, has she murdered before and Annalise saved her ass? She seems to have a forced numbness about everything except Annalise and now dead Sam.
I am not much for the past, present, and future flitting back and forth, then they throw in everything but the kitchen sink thinking that makes it a better show. To me, it just makes it so unrealistic, just tell a good story and don’t add every twist you can dream up for a single murder.
Peccadillos is an old fashioned word, usually we used for things like someone getting caught with their pants down, another old saying, which usually means caught cheating on your significant other.
The Hapstall siblings were not indicted for their aunt’s murder due to the false evidence. They are still on the hook for the murder of their rich parents though.
The flitting back and forth can get a bit chaotic but I think it’s meant to keep the viewers coming back every week.
And I also think we are all trying to figure out Wes and Bonnie’s back story. I’d also like to know the history on Frank!
Thanks for the recap! It’s always nice to read after watching because so easy to miss things. This can be a tough show to follow but like the darkness of it.
good recap. I also missed small segments, your recap filled in what I missed. thank you
Peccadillo was used by my Mom when she would descripe a persons quirks.
A little peccadillo, she would reply to someone gossiping about what another person was doing.
It was like a NICE excuse that could mean anything about a person you did not want to talk bad about.
For me the group is running around in a happenstance manner. From court, legal studies, sex, murders, please give me a little structure, less stories and a great courtroom case.
The group is HTGAWM for me. They are the stars with Annalise at the helm. I want more of them.
I agree with calipatti. The team is all helter skelter this season.
Without this recap I would have never know who the dead lady was. Because, I have this stupid facial recognition problems.
Great recap Tamara Missy. I don’t even watch the show but after reading your recap, I have a little sense of what is going on with it. That’s pretty impressive to be able to do that. I might even start watching to see if it can keep my attention. Now if I can just match the names with faces it might work.
Love this show but not buying the love story between Annalise and Eve. Can’t wait to see who tried to kill Annalise, my money is on Nate
So confusing to me, all of it. Flitting back and forth from long ago, a while back, and the present. I fear it will fall out of my “must see” category. Love Nate and I hope he never turns out to be the bad guy.
Has HTGAWM fallen into the abyss by trying to cover every single possible love available to a PC world? We need a little more attention to characters and a more cohesive storyline, imo.
