The Advertiser Backlash Over The View is Fucking Ridiculous!

September 19, 2015 by tamaratattles 114 Comments

The purple compromise

This is a topic that I have wanted to talk about for a couple of days now.  It’s controversial and I am of the minority opinion. It has to do with the Miss America Pageant, The View, Miss Colorado, Joy Behar, Michelle Collins and some stupid advertisers.

Let’s start with pageants.  I’m from Georgia. I’ve been in pageants, I’ve judged pageants, I love pageants. Talent competitions in the Miss America pipeline of pageants have a talent competition. This usually involves some sort of musical talent.  If you are hard up, you could twirl a baton, or tap dance or read a dramatic monologue. A monologue from a published work. Or maybe a comedic monologue you wrote.  You don’t throw on some scrubs and ramble on about your favorite Alzheimer’s patient.  That is not a talent.  That’s just admitting you have no talent. What the hell did this woman do to win her state?  Did she yammer on about a tomato garden? Seriously.

This whole debacle also detracted from the fact that she was the queen of stupid interview answers this year. This brilliant nurse was asked who she thinks should be on the $10 bill and her answer was Ellen DeGeneres.  She’s a joke and I think she still came in third.

Look. I have nothing against nurses. They are a very important part of our community. But the ladies at The View were just critiquing her talent competition.  Michelle Collins simply said that she came out in scrubs and a stethoscope and basically read her emails.  Joy, who had not watched the show asked why she was wearing a “doctor’s stethoscope” which pissed off nurses everywhere. Joy just misspoke on live TV and apologized to nurses the next day.  But it was too late. All hell had broken loose.

So Today on the The View, they had an even shittier show than usual because they had to traipse out all these nurses to talk about how great they are and what an important job they have. SERIOUSLY? People can’t have an opinion about pageant contestants anymore in this country?  Watching a pageant is fun simply for the fact that it is live and they could say something stupid at any moment.  Miss Colorado had NO TALENT and a really stupid answer for her interview question. And I think, though I MISSED THE PAGEANT THE ONE YEAR MISS GEORGIA WON DEALING WITH WEBSITE SHIT,  she came in third.  That is the story.

So even after today’s stupid infomercial for nurses, who again are lovely people who work their asses off for not much pay at all,  advertisers are pulling out of  The View.  Not because it jumped the shark after Elisabeth Hasselbeck left, but because some dumb blond, who happens to be a nurse made some dumb choices.

Okay, I feel better now. I’m anxious to hear about how our resident Petomato nurse feels about this debacle.

I love Tamara’s headline – yes the backlash was “fucking ridiculous”. Joy’s comment about the stethoscope was silly, but she was probably bored to death by the segment and wasn’t thinking. What’s happening to this country when people can’t say what they think on shows such as “The View”? That’s why it’s called The View!! Everyone is getting so damned politically correct – and for advertisers to pull support from the show is nuts. I say we boycott the advertisers who react so hastily. To say that Joy and the other ladies were being disrespectful to nurses is a real distortion of the facts and anyone with half a mind could see that. Tamara hit the nail directly on the head with this blog – very well said.

This is what happens when Political Correctness has run amock. The “left” has used it for years to bludgeon the “right”. I hate it wherever it occurs BUT I have to laugh when the “left” is hoisted on their own petards. Watching Joy (the most ironic name ever, since she’s one of the least joyful people on the planet) grovel was beauty.

I love that it happened to Joy, whether it be about nurses or someone else, although I am glad she is back to put some pep into the show. I stopped watching last season, so dull. I like Joy, except for her constant bashing of what others say, JeJune is absolutely right. Joy always claims she should get a break because she is a comedian. When she carries on about her political opions, she is serious as a heart attack, even if she frames it as a joke.

You do realize “political correctness”, as the colloquial phrase we use in modern language, was created by a conservative to condem liberal efforts at multiculturalism? You have it twisted.

Nurses are not a marginalized group. This really has nothing to do with either side of a political system that distracts from deep rooted issues by pitting one side against another.

Imo this is just another symptom of the alarmist nature of social media. As for the advertisers, who knows what the real story is. Maybe they’ve been wanting to pull out for a while and this is their golden opportunity without facing network backlash.

Yes, indeed. This is a lot like when, for example, a marriage ends because “we’ve just grown apart, that’s all,” but concealed behind it is the truth of the matter. The View turned into a ragged and pathetic fucking mess a long time ago. Ratings tanked long ago too. This is the bandwagon for advertisers to hurl themselves onto with ardent hypocrisy, so they can get the hell out of town, coupled with alarmist media tactics and sheep consciousness wherein we can all hallucinate that this is the time when all are beholden to feel guilty about nurses.

Yes, indeed. This is a lot like when a marriage ends because “we’ve just grown apart”, and the truth of the matter is concealed beneath. The View has been a ragged mess for a very long time, ratings sunk long ago, and now the advertisers have a golden opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and get the hell out of town. Couple this with a largely vapid, alarmist media and sheep consciousness letting everybody know that now is the time for us all to feel guilty about nurses.

Nurses are not a marganalized group but the show is on in every hospital room so lots of nurses watch this show. It is on in the lounge too. The view forgot who their audience was. The audience of the show is offended and the sponsors care about the audience. The view is not the New York Times it is a show selling products to the viewers and the viewers ain’t buying.

THANK YOU TAMARA. I have been seeing the Internet in an uproar and all kinds of memes about this but had no clue what it was referring to. I was bored today and did some investigation and had no idea how Joy’s comments actually equated to her dissing or disrespecting nurses. i couldn’t understand why so many nurses were so offended either. It sounded like a bandwagon issue, which I happen to think most public uproars are… I’m so glad we share the same opinion on this. Media uproar and backlash combined with some inauthentic desire for some type of fake political correctness in the public eye has just gone too far and taken us back decades.

I have been trying to find out what “talent” this idiot white woman had to win Miss Colorado and all I have had time to discover so far is that SHE WAS RECRUITED to be in Miss Colorado and she competed against 24 other contestants. Colorado is not much of a pageant state.

I do believe the women of The View would not have been as mouthy if it had been a black nurse they were picking at.They knew they were being insulting about the stethoscope, unless they think nurses just take temps and handle bed pans.
It should make no difference, but they know it is not politically correct to criticize a black nurse.

Myself, I did not mind Miss Colorado’s presentation as much as one girl that sang poorly. I thought the winner gave a bad answer. She seemed to have the same reply to both pro and con about deflate gate Tom Brady’s punishment being overruled.

I was surprised how provocative some questions and answers were. Not long ago, pageant girls got in trouble for having an opinion off political center. It is not a competition about politics, but that seems to influence everything now. Somebody is always mad.

I just don’t like it if a not pretty girl wins. There are always a few in the group that are not so much in the face and others that are too amateur to be presenting their talent on a big stage. I don’t mind a well done monolog. A nice break from the twirling and warbling.

I liked The View with Elizabeth on it. Rosie is the one that couldn’t take any heat. Nichole Wallace was great, she had more knowledge about either party than the rest combined. Joy and Nichole would have been great together. Nichole knows little about a lot, but she knows Republicans.

Perhaps your talent could have been criss cross apple sauce and advocating Ru Paul to replace Hamilton on the $10 bill during your pageant days. If I were a nurse, I would be offended that skill was presented as talent. I would find it demeaning to all the education and hard work, I put into becoming a skilled professional. Do nurses just pop out of the womb with the talent to “nurse”, are prodigy nurses assisting in the OR? Why would nurses be offended, I am asking seriously to any nurse out there?

Everything is such a big deal anymore. Nobody can say anything without someone being offended and declaring war. It was a stupid joke. Everyone knows nurses work hard and have a tough job. Joy never said otherwise. She misunderstood the situation and made a bad joke. People are too sensitive. Save the PC war for a real issue, not a nurse and a stethoscope comment. And Tamara made a good point. This was the TALENT portion of the pageant. Talent implies physically doing something. Acting, singing, dancing, etc. Storytelling was the only talent she displayed. Had she performed CPR on a dummy or put an IV in one of the audience members dying of boredom then her nursing skills would have indeed shown her talent.

There is a difference between a skill and a talent. Nursing is a skill. You learn skills. You go to school to become skilled at something. If you have a talent, that is a natural thing. Miss Colorado has no talent. And she totally screwed the pooch on the interview question. I know that in the lower levels of competitions, things are fixed. I dislike Miss Colorado because I think she was a plant. She had no pageant experience. This whole thing is a set up. She’s been a nurse (of what kind I have no idea) for five minutes. She was scouted for Miss Colorado two years ago… This doesn’t smell right.

TT, I wholeheartedly agree that a monologue about nursing is NOT a talent.

As a nurse, the offense to me was the comment about her having a “doctor’s stethoscope”. Offensive because nurses use their stethoscope more than doctors. Offensive because it is the nurse that spends 12 hour shifts at your bedside caring for you. Offensive because the doctor is perceived to be a “good” doctor because he spent 5 minutes with you leaving the nurse to interpret what he just said or didn’t say. Offensive nurses take the brunt of the anger from patients and families. So, to associate the stethoscope with doctors was like saying she was trying to make herself look more important or credible.

Don’t get me wrong. Doctors deserve respect of which I have the utmost respect for them.

Again, I agree pageants are to display talents not highlighting your career choice. Wrong platform Miss Colorado!

Also, the advertisers were wrong too.

I so agree, Jess. We are now so “pussified”(I loved your word) that college students can’t hear ideas that diverge from their own. Please! So many times in college I answered questions on tests that followed the professor’s beliefs rather than my own. I’ll soon be 67 so no harm came to my delicate psyche.
As late as the Jodi Arias trial I completely changed my lifelong belief on the death penalty. I’m still OK with the bad guy/girl getting the death penalty but I can see the benefit of a long life lived in the deprivation of prison, too.
I also believe that was a skill rather than a talent. I think most of the outrage is about the comment about the stethoscope. Minus that statement, this might have flown below the public’s radar. I think the bigger issue is that The View has gone on much too long. It has survived past its “use by” date.

You’re absolutely right about Nichole Wallace – what a ridiculous move on the part of ABC. She presented the Republican view in a sane and rational manner, and she seemed to really love her job at The View. I also think this action really pissed off Whoopi.

As for Ms. Hasselbeck, I never saw her as the brightest bulb on the string. Towards the end of her tenure, when she was already being courted by Fox, they were supplying Ms. H. with ‘talking points’. She was often shrill and frequently misinformed, a prettier, younger Ann Coulter wanna-be.

I dread the day Candace Bure joins the table. The few times she’s been on have proved her to be another high-pitched siren for the so-called Christian Right. God’s Way (or the Bible’s) or the Highway to Hell. I’m not sure if I can watch with her participation.

I adore Joy and am so happy she is back, and, of course, Whoopi is a goddess! Perhaps my love for them will keep me viewing as I have since the very first show (yes, I am old!). I just wish they would keep the current panel as is, I think the are starting to gel as a unit. Just please tell Ms. Bure to stay home.

Smart, thoughtful, friendly, sweet – seriously kind of a palate cleanser when up against Whoopi – who I think is the reason the show is tanking. I think Whoopi just seems like she is carrying around a lot of anger or grief or something, and she is taking it out on the others. I thought she was down right RUDE to Rosie at times… even beyond the whole “they are both strong willed women, and Rosie was used to being the moderator”.

I get it… Whoopi lost her mom and then two men she was very close to suddenly and tragically (Robin Williams and Mike Nichols) then had some health issues. But if you can’t do your job and treat people nicely – take a time out.

I’m in Texas where Pageants rule. Miss Colorado was a truly subpar contestant on so many levels, and, frankly, truly mockable. A monologue about you job is not acting or displaying a talent. Its giving a speech. Theres already a category in which to do this. It was lazy and hacky. Display a talent. Baton. Sing. Microwave cookery. Something other than repeating something youve already said while wearing your work clothes.

Her monologue was boring anyway. She could have at least talked about an ER/trauma event. Hell certifide nurses aides/orderlies wear stethoscopes too! Technically they are sometimes the “ears and eyes” first, especially in nursing home. Also RN make good money, I am not underpaid. Pay is relative. I didn’t watch the pageant, but it sounds like Miss Colorado was basically saying oh you have to love me cause look, I am a fucking nurse. I am a talentless boob, but I am really good at NURSING people and I even have a stethoscope! I CARE and I am pretty! At least she could have used a ventriloquist’s dummy to act as the patient with Alzheimers. I wish Miss Colorado had been a med tech, so she could have run tests on someone’s blood for her talent segment–now that’s glamorous. Or give a lecture on standard deviation or how does blood clot? Isn’t the View supposed to be a bunch of annoying women voicing their important opinions about really really really important stuff? The advertisers are a bunch of morons if they pull from the View for this.

I was an icu nurse and I always had friends in the lab. The technologists were necessary to keep those sick patients alive. They ran those STAT dig and K+ ‘s for me. That was over 20 years ago, so I guess the hospital dynamics have changed. My mentor, who was a WWII nurse, told me to be respectful to every employee. They were all necessary to keep my job running smoothly.
I missed the pageant and the View, but from what everybody is saying, it is much ado about nothing.

Aren’t we over these stupid pageants yet? They are beauty pageants, I do believe, but the contestants aren’t all that beautiful any more, and many of them are not too bright, so what are we watching? Some women parading around who aren’t beautiful, have no talent, and are kind of dumb.

I am so glad you posted this. Its so ridiculous, when you sign up for a pageant you are signing up to be judged. She decided her talent would be to read a stupid monologue therefore she opened herself up to judgement of that monologue and it sucked, whether she or others liked it is their own opinion just like others have the right to not like it. what is the big deal !

It is silly… People tear apart shows, people, presidential candidates, and almost everything that has legs on a daily basis. Now, one show mocked a contestant in a pageant? Lord help us all…

That being said, if you want some self-induced torture, I suggest reading the comments on any FB post related to this. You will want to put a sharp object in your eye.

My girlfriends and I have a Miss America watch party every year. This nurse monologue was a HUGe argument this year. Most of us felt like it was just okay, but not really want we want to see in a monologue. We want to see acting or entertainment or comedic effect. Several of my gfs are nurses and they weren’t even that impressed, basically saying that anyone in the nursing field has a similar story, if not a better one.

This winners interview answer was terrible. I’m not sold on these celebrity judges.

I’m right there with you, TT. An informative speech is something you give in college, not at a beauty pageant. What if one of the contestants was an attorney and their talent was reading case law? They would be ridiculed and rightly so! I think Joy would have reacted differently had it not been her first week back.

This is kind of like the commercial where the beauty queen is sitting in the piece of construction equipment and the foreman says to her “You aren’t Marge and she says I’m kind of like Marge. We both drive a stick, we both like to save on car insurance and we both have integrity in health insurance in the Merica of the U.S. So therefore, yes thank you.” Same thing. Neither one of these things makes much sense lol. I’m 5’2″ so now I want to be referred to as vertically challenged instead of short. It offends me. I’m 58 years old and getting close to what people refer to as a senior citizen but I’m going to sue if I’m not called a junior citizen. I’m not in my senior year of life yet thank you. I have been a hair stylist for 25 years, we are often put down because we “just do hair”. We have to be chemists, therapists, at times receptionists and we have to also be able to cut with out taking one of our finders off or a clients ears. Are there many who work in the chop shops and have zero talent and no ability to work with people, of hell yes. I have clients i have had my entire career, it isn’t a glamorous career, but it is so many great things. I have a flexability that most don’t have at their jobs, I have fun, I get to chat, I get to change people’s days with an amazing foil or style. I have heard every single hard luck story there is, consoled a client who is about to bury their spouse, watched in horror as a woman had a stroke several stations away form mine. Is this the most amazing career in the world? No, is it the one i have chosen and enjoy? It sure is, but we are smarter than most give us credit for.

Nurses really do have the best stories about themselves, from tragic to comic. I have two identical twin cousins who became nurses and worked in the same hospital while putting themselves through college. The entire hospital staff loved springing the twins on patients who had no idea that there were two of them. Talk about seeing double after coming to from the medication.

The thing that strikes me most, is the fact that these new-found “causes”, i.e. people, did not do the things they did to generate the publicity. These people (nurse, muslim student clock-maker, etc) weren’t looking for all the freaking madness. I really think this whole world has gone crazy. A nurse, joined a pageant, had no “talent” in the traditional sense of the word, to perform on a stage; a kid made a science project. And now we have boycotts, and White House visits. When did EVERY little thing become such a big deal?

As for the advertisers, I think they can see “the writing on the wall” where this show is concerned and took advatage of, perhaps, some clause in their contract to get out and away from this show. I don’t think The View is long for this world. I used to love watching, now its almost painful

I think comedians should get a lot of latitude. Who the hell gives credence to what they say, anyway? I don’t. Joy Behar is not President Obama or anyone else influential. I’ve never mistaken TV personalities for highly educated people, just folks observing life and bringing their spin on it. I’ll probably get slammed for this, but some of my RN family members resent doctors and imply that they (nurses) do most of the job. So maybe some of this prickliness is an effort by some to get their due respect.

Nicole Wallace is a very smart woman who backs her observations with facts and experience unlike Hasselback who was a puppet for the right wing agenda. Nicole’s problem was she had no fire which the producers wanted. Michelle is not as funny as she thinks and seems to use jokes to hide her insecurities. Nicole and Joy would have been a great combination for intelligent viewers. Obviously those aren’t the viewers the producers see as their demographic, especially when you spend 2 shows on nurses.

I have a lot of friends who are or once were nurses so I heard about it pretty quickly. Joy definitely was ignorant about what nurses do and why one would wear a stethoscope, but the outcry over it has been ridiculous. There has definitely been a strong emphasis on the fact that Joy Behar is a liberal in the commentary, but if I’m honest I think Fox News would have had more than a few free mentions if it had been Elizabeth Hasselbeck who had said it instead.

TT I’m with you, it is ridiculous that this girl’s ‘talent’ got her where it did in this competition. Kudos to her for being a nurse, but it’s not a talent in the pageant sense, end of story.

I think Joan Rivers would have gotten away with it. Remember when she said about Amanda Berry, GINA Dejesus and Michelle Knight being kidnapped? At least they didn’t have to pay rent for 10 years? People were pissed and she refused to apologized? Granted, it was said while she was on tour- but people have lost sponsorships and jobs. Don’t get me wrong, I love Joan Rivers, I am just pointing out that Joan could have gotten away with it.

The problem with The View is; they have too much of a liberal point of view and it pisses off a lot of people. Look at the comments on Facebook.
I think people are waiting for something like this to happen so people could pounce. You look at a lot of the hashtags the nurses reunite hashtag, Jordie of them were not nurses.

I personally can’t stand liberals or Republican, I’m in the middle, so please don’t accuse me of liberal bashing.

Anyhow, while I have a great appreciation for nurses I did find it odd she read her emails . What patient emails their nurse?

Anyhow, I think producers should have prep them better also because Joy said she hadn’t even seen the program when she made the apology the next day, she said she Saulet when she was backstage- only a few minutes of it. Next day, she really butchered the apology by saying she didn’t know what she was talking about- which I believe by the way, it just pissed people off more. By them having the nurses on, I got like this feeling in my stomach and my head I’m just like oh no next-door going to find out these really aren’t nurses, LOL.

I live in the Windsor, CO where Miss Colorado grew up. I don’t pay any attention to pageants (not my thing) until the Miss America pageant so didn’t follow Kelley, don’t know her or her family. I agree with you, her monologue is not a talent. She gave a speech about her job. A very respectable job and that’s what I have issue with the View about and the remarks the ladies made. The apology was a non-apology and I’d love for that show get hit with karma. Sad, I googled Kelley and in 25 pages, all it talks about is this crap. So…brilliant. Whoever thought of this. She is a pianist and that was her talent at the Miss Colorado pageant in June. She also got a volleyball scholarship & graduated valedictorian in nursing school so she’s no dummy. Her family are big wigs in the medical field as well. I think it’s more calculated than that. Please, to say that she wants Ellen Degenres on the $10 bill?, perform a monologue about nursing when you have musical talent? TT, you were involved in the business not me but it seems staged. However, Kelley said she wouldn’t accept the apology unless all the women from the View worked a 12 hour shift as a nurse? Dear, Bless your heart! They won’t! and although I’m happy to see Colorado in the top 3 for the first time since 1988, I think your 15 minutes should be over. God bless our nurses!!

That’s a ridiculous expectation to ask The View to work a 12 hour shift. First of all, HIPPA LAWS would prevent that to happen and secondly, it’s stupid, they are not trained to be nurses, you can’t work a 12 hour shift as a nurse when you are not a nurse.

here’s my two cents… Joy Behar was $PAID$ to come back to a show that’s barely breathing. Joy is a comedian. Did anyone actually WATCH the very outdated Miss America pageant? Or did you just read about it in the news two days later? So Joy’s mind, as she made a comment about a froot loop contestant, went to a doctor instead of a nurse. Do we really need to crucify her and have advertisers pull out over a stethoscopes? Do we really think the nurses of this country don’t do the bulk of the work while doctors get the check? Kind of interesting how much press Joy has generated for a failing show.

All this is actually great for the view. People haven’t cared this much about what was going on there since Barbara left. This is great publicity for free. I’m sure they are eating it up. What they said was not all that controversial so they will come out smelling like roses with more viewers trying to see what all the hype is about. Good move ladies. This show from its onset has always been about women openly discussing things that usually are gossiped about in little hen groups. So I don’t see what all the hullabaloo is about this. If I wasn’t sure that a police officer carried a taser I don’t dislike officers of the law I’m just misinformed on the proper uniform and police practices. Sue me.i mean really just Joy made a mistake.

Im a long time Miss America volunteer thought Colorado was going to win after she was called into the top 7 after she performed her talent. I knew the judges loved her. I didnt agree with the Ellen answer but she answered the question, backed it up, and managed a plug for equality. Most of the contestants were not able to do that. Id rather hear Colorado’s talent then some of the other contestants attempting to sing, dance, etc.

You have to go to Youtube and view the pageant. Vanessa Williams was awesome and Georgia’s talent was real talent.

I think the issue with the View’s comments was they had to add in the dig about nursing and to top it off many felt their apology wasn’t sincere and more of a slap in the face. Sponsorship will eventually return.
