Are You Watching Project Runway?

Project Runway

I’m finally feeling like watching the premiere of Project Runway. I can’t believe it is season 14!  We start with the new designers in Madison Square Garden. There are large pieces of cloth strewn throughout stadium seats and the cloth grabbing begins.  They can make anything they want, as long as they use the cloth that they grabbed. Oddly, three people did not bring any sort of sewing supply kits.  Looks like they will just have to borrow from others. We certainly have an eclectic mix of designers this season.

Merline is on my last nerve. I can’t imagine trying to work near her. I already want to fast forward through her scenes. Merline is apparently sewing Muslims. She said it ten times before Tim finally corrected her.

I’m so glad that Tim Gunn is back rather than those women who have been mentoring the last few seasons. Tim Gunn is the whole point of the show.  When I taught elementary school, I found the phrases “carry on” and “make it work” quite useful. When marching my brood around (I always had a very orderly line) we would stop at each corner and make sure all the ducklings were together, then I’d tell the line leader, “carry on!” in my best Tim Gunn voice.

Project Runway Week 1
L-R designs by Hanmiao, Blake and Laurie

I’m trying to root for my homeboy, Edmond. But I don’t really like his dress so far. Neither does Tim, who is pretty harsh with his opinion on Edmond’s dress. He calls it “dreary” and “the antithesis of joy.”  Get it together, home boy.

Kelly’s ginormous hoop earrings, Olivia Newton John headband, and mussed hair gives us an idea about her sloppy construction skills.  Tim was pretty much disappointed in everyone. Kelly decides to scrap her whole dress and use another fabric that is easier to work with. Edmond also changes his entire look. Lots of panic in the sewing room.

Edmond’s dress is much improved with his little black dress with the neon green lining on the train. There is some hideous crap going down this runway. It will be hard to pick the three worst.  I kind of like Ashleigh’s long yellow maxi skirt, but it seems to make the model look bigger than she is.

Edmond is in the top three! Merline is in the top three. Ashleigh is also in the top three.  The bottom three are Duncan, Blake and Hanmiao. The judges don’t seem to like Duncan and his laid back attitude. The designers are all shocked that Duncan was in the bottom. Many of them thought he was in the top three.

Zac Posen is kind of an asshole.

Ashley won!  I’m so happy for her. She and Edmond were my initial favorites. Duncan was “auffed.”

Who is watching this season with me?

Count me in. It’s one of my favorite shows. I did not think Duncan’s garment was the worst one though. I doubt I would even sleep in that yellow sack thing Hanmiao made. I also thought that floral romper thing made by one of the safe designers looked like something I wore in junior high school. I agree Merline is annoying but I actually liked and would wear her garment. I also would wear Edmond’s garment. I would not wear Ashley’s garment because it would make my hips look even wider. I don’t have a clear favorite designer yet but I am looking forward to Season 14.

I can’t believe the guy with the hideous floor length muumuu with pockets was not in the bottom three. That said if I saw it in the Ross Dress For Less section that sells crappy muumuus for $15 I’d buy it. Muumuus are not to be seen by anyone anyway unless you make a quick dash to the mailbox.

I couldn’t believe that muumuu wasn’t in the bottom! Don’t know why, I always get the best/worst list wrong according to the judges. I was surprised at how many non fitting oversized looks were on the runway, weird. I also can’t understand why the Asian girl didn’t get sent home, that huge yellow/orange ensemble was beyond awful and I appreciate a less fitting garment. I hope the designs get better but I didn’t see any standouts, I didn’t even like their top three.

I like th muumuu. I thought the choice of patterns and colors worked well together and I liked the way the pattern was cut. Would I wear it? No. But I can understand someone else in it. I hated Duncan’s fabric choice but I felt he should have stayed over that flower romper that was common. I would have given the grey streamlined dress a two for being ill fitting and boring.

I love Project Runway and just happened to catch that it was on while channel surfing. Don’t know how I almost missed it. Tim Gunn is my favorite too TT. Love this man. Even my jeans and tee shirt wearing, non-fashion caring husband likes Tim Gunn and will watch the show when he has a scene. I was glad that Ashley won. She made a wise decision by flipping the fabrics and making the skirt floral. Yes I’ll be watching this season.

I’m watching! Thanks, TT. I am a very bad PR watcher, in that I fast forward until the actually runway section. I find all the sewing and angst to be boring and annoying. Yay Tim Gunn!! I wish Tim Gunn was my uncle. I’d like to call him when I am feeling crazed and he would say something kind and then he’d say make it work and I would be okay again. Glad Ashleigh won. That skirt and top were adorable. I loved the suit too–would have been happy with either. I didn’t like the little black dress with the train. That yellowish lining reminded me of pee. The worst was definitely that salmon table cloth drapey thing. Glad the dude went home.

I’m right there with you, Tamara. I love this show. I thought the women were on another “edition” …maybe an all star version.

Anyway, I agree about Merline. The other designers were awfully patient. I loved it when that young woman told her, “it’s been real”. Her tone clearly said stfu.
For a change, I even agreed with the judges’ decisions. I loved the yellow skirt and top. The young man who went home. Needed to since he was just in way over his head.

Love, love, love PR. Tim Gunn never left PR proper….the chick mentoring are on PR All Stars. Zac Posen is a brilliant designer and a total bitch, but atleast we don’t see copies coming down his runway a year after we’ve seen it on Project Runway (I’m looking at you Michael Kors).

Right now, like Ashley and Jake (so they’ll be out soon), can’t stand Blake or Candace (so one of them will win).

I not even shocked anymore on who is on top and bottom.. PR does not make sense sometimes in the judging… It happens every season.

I was surprised they axed Duncan too! His first time ever drapping and it looked so fluid. He’s a men’s wear designer. Maybe it’s his fault he wasn’t more prepared for a woman’s silhouette to show off his design voice but he definitely wasn’t the worst or boring.

The woman mentors are from other spin offs of the series. All stars and the kids each have their own set of judges, mentor and co host. I do agree that Heidi and Tim Gun make the show tho!

I LOVE it when they critique the gowns up close (I was really tired – I hope they did that this time – ok… rewatching right this minute b/c I can’t remember shit and I want to procrastinate on chores)

Thrilled with who won. I feel that she really is the one designer who you can tell KNOWS her own aesthetic going in – sometimes there are talented designers who are still trying to figure their fashion direction. .

The auff’d outfit – I liked it on the mannequin, before it was finished – but it looked like shit on the runway. Plus, he admitted he was ahead of everyone in progress on the dress – so NO EXCUSES ON THAT HEM. That is what made the decision I think.

I’ve been way into Project Runway since day one. I stopped watching it when it moved from Bravo to Lifetime (and had that season in LA…no, No, NO!) but I started again a couple seasons ago and am glad I did. I missed it.

I need a little Nina in my life. It was empty without her. (“Short, tight, and shiny is the fastest way to look cheap!”)
Yes, Zac’s kind of an asshole but I don’t mind…I just imagine all the sexual things I’d do to him if I need him to shut up!

I thought for sure Pistachio would go home. That yellow schmock-thing could have been done (and better) by any 8-year old.

I am a Project Runway Super Fan, and have even sold Vintage items from my Shop to more than one PR Designer! (hold the applause, I won’t be able to think)

I was so happy to just sort of “find” it on TV—I hadn’t really heard when the new season was starting again! My bad. For not reaching out. Sorry Tim. Not so sorry Heidi because she bothers the F out of me these days.

I watched the “meet the Designers” episode before the regular one, and I was once again captivated. Such eclectic people! I love it! Ashley was my FAVORITE from the FIRST SECOND I SAW HER.

But I have to say I, like Tim Gunn, was “disappointed” in the level of skill shown in the workroom for the first challenge. AND THREE DESIGNERS did not BOTHER to bring their TOOLS of the TRADE?? WTH??

And once I saw the runway show, I again thought many of the Designers showed only rudimentary skills at best!! I love how they always act so “fierce” in the pre-show, but once sh*t hits the fan, and they need to PRODUCE, they fall apart.

I L-O-V-E-D, L-O-V-E-D when Ashley was asking Tim for advice about using the print skirt or the plain one, and he looked at her and basically said, “I love your style, so do it that way”!!!!

I hope the skill level picks up or I am going to be bored out of my mind watching the other Designers show their…..stuff on the runway. But in any case, I know Ashley is going to WIN so basically it’s a “Watch Ashley take it All” kind of thing and that’s more than good enough for me. I am going to LOVE IT! I want to work with her and make big beautiful clothes!!! She is my one and only girl crush!!!

I like Edmond too – so far – and I found he reminded me of season 3’s Michael Mychael Knight; another straight(?) black guy from Atlanta who designs “sexy” body-conscious clothes.

Which of course reminded me of the time that Michael Mychael came to visit Sherée at her house to talk about She by Sherée…and inadvertently and hilariously revealed Mrs. Whitfield’s utter cluelessness about design and fashion in general. Ahhhh….good times….

I loved Ashley’s design. It was playful and sexy without being vulgar. I thought perhaps she had ditched the modesty bustier since I couldn’t see one, and then I realized she matched the model’s skin so perfectly, you could only see a hint of it. I was ready to smack Merline, and I was ready for one of the judges to point out how completely misplaced (and poorly sewn and/or pressed) her bust darts were. Her outfit was interesting, but I don’t think it was that well sewn. I suspect Duncan’s was one of those love it/hate it outfits. Perhaps it looked better in person, but I agreed with (I think it was) Heidi who said you couldn’t see anything of the model’s figure in it. That said, I think it was his comments about not knowing who he was asa designer yet that did Duncan in. As poorly executed as Hanmaio design was for the fabric, she has a vision and a design aesthetic.

I would have picked the home boy’s LBS with the neon lined train thingy for the win. I also didn’t hate Blake’s as much as the judges did. While I am a fan of Ashley, I didn’t like the top. And I don’t want pleats to start at my waistline, but would prefer them to be dropped. Nothing was fantastic to me. But that is usually how it starts and then people start finding their groove.

I also think that production probably bad something to do with this episodes top/bottom choices. The overconfident guy’s dress is in the bottom (yes it was messy) but that pasty girl’s very boring short onsie looking thing was a ‘safe’ dress? How did she not get called on dressing her model like a toddler?

Also Merlene recieved no criticism for the weaknesses in her construction (which were evident on closer inspection).

Yay! So glad you’ll be watching and recapping. Have watched every season. It still bugs me to this day; did Jay, winner of season 1, continue in fashion or did he return to his porn background? I loved his designs and really rooted for him.

Hopefully Edmonds finds his way––I didn’t like his design this episode. It reminded me of that time Demi Moore tried her hand at creating clothing and her “business in the front/party in the back” dress. It just makes me think of a bi-level haircut from the 80’s. Otherwise, I think he’s kinda cute.

Ashley has my vote as fan favorite. The pale, female 20 y.o. know-it-all made me yell at her thru the tv.

Project Runway was one of the shows, along with ” Queer Eye” first turned me on to Bravo. The stations lineup was so gay at the tie, I was really surprised to find out that straight people liked Bravo too. I was sad when PR switched to lifetime and although there have been some glitches, the move has been pretty successful.

Tim has always been on Project Runway. He is not the mentor on the misnamed “Project Runway All stars” (which could be named “PR also rans” Mondo notwithstanding).

I love the fact that Ashleigh wants to put out a fashionable line for plus size. There is so few choices for the pleasantly plump. I think her line would also be for real plus size girls and not what the industry says is plus 12-14 starts as plus. She will know how to fit a plus size body and what girls of a particular size what to emphasize and de emphasize. Young girls in her age group don’t want grown up business suits and work clothes like most of the lane Bryant clothes. They want to look in fashion just like all the thinner girls. So for that she is my fav. I am pulling for Edmond as well though I love his tenacity. The crazy woman would have made me want to see her lips sewn shut but I really did love the end product. Don’t understand the little Asian woman’s direction at all. Who wants to wear a potatoe sack?

The yellow coat and dress looked like a 7th grade sewing project gone wrong. The draped gown was a luscious color.
Tim Gunn is a class act. I read his autobiography.
When Nina say ¡No Bueno!, bad things will happen. I miss Michael Kors and black tee. Zac Posen is okay, just glad no Isaac Mizrahi. I did get one of his black lace cocktail dresses from Target. It is beautifully made. I still get complements.

So glad to see others are watching this too. I love Project Runway and have from the beginning.

Merline needs some super glue lip gloss – STAT!
Zac is kinda creepy to me. Maybe it’s the way he seems to ignore the models when he is checking out the construction of the garment, almost as if they are just dress forms and not real people to him.
The yellow potato sack designer won’t last long. No one that ignores Tim Gunn lasts long on the show, nor should they. He is truly a class act.
I’m looking forward to the season and the recaps here.

Yeah! Project Runway is back. I thought that orange house coat should have went home. But I think,”they” think, they want to see something else from her. The female mentor is for the Project Runway All-Stars show..and I love some Tim Gunn. Yeah!!! Something other than Housewives to watch – LOL!

I do not comment much… more of a lurker… but you peaked my interest when you asked about Project Runway… I too will be watching… I own every season, and never bore of it

I love Tim Gunn (if you haven’t read his biography-book, by the way, not his bio page or wiki page, read the damn book-go read it now. Great stuff), and I LOVE Nina Garcia, CDatMCM. And you have to say, every time she is on screen, Nina Garcia, CDatMCM.
Merline is the one I’m either going to love or hate by episode three. If she lasts that long.
Swapnil is dreamy in that way that swarthy men with piercing eyes are, if you are in to that sort of thing.
and I’m sorry, I know it’s shallow, but Hanmiao Yang looks and sounds like the designer in the cartoon movie The Incredibles.
