After the most ridiculously fake episode of Catfish ever last week with Prophet and Trinity, this week we seem to have a real story and it doesn’t seem as though it will end well.
We start this week with the boys in the usual hotel room. They get an email from a guy named Thad who was having problems in his marriage and needed on outsider’s perspective. While this might be a good time for a counseling session, a chat or three with your priest, or doing some personal journaling, Thad decides to find a random stranger on the Internet to unburden is deepest secrets to. Damn, Thad, consulting a magic 8 ball to make your major life decisions would have been a better choice.
So Thad picks some random girl with a pretty picture in her profile named Sara and begins to unload. You won’t believe what happens next! They start having “feelings” for each other. Shocking! Sara wanted to meet up but she stood him up because she got kidnapped by aliens along the way. Oh wait, not quiet yet. First she had a seizure on the way to meet him and was in the hospital. Then she got kidnapped by her ex boyfriend (maybe he was an alien) but luckily she managed to escape her imprisonment in time to chat with him some more.
At least this idiot can Google. He did a few perfunctory searches on the Internet and found out that Sara is really a girl named Ashley and the real girl in the photo says she has been doing this to lots of people. Both Thad and the real Sara want the boys to make Ashley stop catfishing.
When the boys go to meet with ole Thad, he tells yet another story about how he was on the phone with “Sara” when her ex came pounding on the door. He heard glass shatter and police radios and listened for a long time until the phone died. He called her mom, the police in all the surrounding area and nothing. The “mother” texted him back saying everything was fine she was slightly injured and home in bed.
The dude is trying to work on things with his wife. He gave the boys everything he had dug up on Ashley, the catfish. The boys quickly discover that Ashley was arrested in 2014. According to Heavy.com Ashley was “arrested twice in 2014 for larceny of merchandise and she was also recently arrested for drugs. Pietrowicz was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia when police found her in an apartment complex parking lot with a bag of black tar heroin. What Nev and Max want us to know is that according to her mugshot she is 6″1 and 31 years old. They also get her address from the jail records.
One of the guys they reached out to on social media to learn more about Ashley calls. He was in a Facebook group and she reached out to him through messaging things turned a bit romantic and all the same crazy stories began. Next, the Skype with the real Sara who wants to let the catfish know she is a real person and she is screwing with her life. Sara is very nervous but willing to confront Ashley with Thad
Sara, Thad and the boys get together at Thad’s house. Sara tells the story of all the men in the country that were in love with her because of Ashley pretending to be her. Ashley has used hundreds of Sara’s family photographs to stage her story on the Internet. She has been doing this for years.
Nev calls the Catfish but she doesn’t answer. They decide since they have the address to just head to her place as they wait for her call. ( Sidenote: Production always confirms all parties including the catfish are willing to participate before they start filming.)
They are at her house but no one is going to the door. In a strange turn of events they start interviewing neighbors. One guy says that he sees people arguing on the lawn from time to time. They go back to the hotel for a bit to wait for her to call. Thad gets a text from Ashley that says, “I am mindblown that you came to my house with Catfish, really?” Thad calls her back and she says she isn’t sure she wants to do it. Shortly after midnight she texts him again saying she will meet them at a friend’s house the next day.
The next day they all head to the meeting place. Ashley comes to the door. All 6’1″ and at least 300 pounds of her. She is quite an imposing figure. She admits she has been using Sara’s pictures and lying to guys online and says she is sorry. She has a four year old daughter. She is unemployed (or a stay at home mom as she puts it. But you can’t be a SAHM if you don’t have a partner to support you. So is she married?). Max wants to know what happened 8 years ago to make her start catfishing people. She tells some weird story of a broken engagement. She got depressed. I should point out this awkward conversations are happening on some random person’s front yard. She says the police noises that Thad heard were all on Youtube.
They go to the car to regroup. Thad and Sara do not believe her when she says she wants to stop. She has said all of this before.
Nev goes to talk to her again while the other three wait in the car. Nev says that both Thad and Sara are unsure that she will really stop. She says some stupid stuff and they go inside so that she can reassure Thad and Sara she is going to stop. She gives the usual catfish spiel about creating a different existence to escape her weight issues and loneliness. Sara gets emotional and steps outside because she doesn’t want to cry on camera. Sara has had her own weight issues and she understands what Ashley is going through. Thad and Ashley talk and Sara eventually comes back in. Max tries to get Sara to share. She doesn’t want to talk about it. They wrap things up and leave.
Two months later, things are great with Thad and his family. Ashley is still catfishing. She has new victims that continue to come forward. They call Sara and she says a week after filming there was someone on Facebook who claimed to be engaged to her. Ashley is now convincing people once again she is the real Sara and that some girl named Ashley has been impersonating her for ten years. Nothing changed at all. Ashley refused to give her side of the story to production.
Perhaps the airing of this episode will help.
