iced tea

There is absolutely NOTHING interesting to blog about today.  So I will put up this open forum for y’all to chat. In Georgia, you have to register your car in you birthday month, my car insurance is also due and I have a lot of things to do today so I am going to stop looking for blog ideas that are not there, and get some things done.

Stay cool and stay hydrated!

Ok..another first time poster long time reader here…. It’s time to come out of the shadows….fear of window licking be damned! TT…you rock! Thank you for all do to keep us in the know.

PS…I was on the tomato growing team but the rats ate them (roof rats here in So Cal)..not that we’re infested or anything they’re just a way of life..them..and coyotes. So they ate the tender baby plants…along with $60 bucks worth of hanging planters of petunias. Really?! About the only thing I can grow on my deck is Jade plant..seems no wildlife cares about that. Oh..and I can’t try the indoor bottle deal as I have cats and tomato plants are poisonous to them…damn it. I do however have an AeroGarden and grow all types of herbs indoors….basil is going crazy right now.

The good news is, I don’t have to water my plants. The bad news is I just got soaked to the bone. just as I was leaving Publix, the bottom fell out of the sky. It was like getting hits with buckets of water. It was kind of refreshing actually.

Banjo and I are trying to get it together to get out of the house for a bit. It seems to be leaving as soon as it began. Does this mean I can skip my shower? I mean we are toing to be walking and sweating soon anyway. LOL.

Oh and wish happy Birthday to the one who is always politely asking for TEA!

I basically bought a new car after having it for 15 years or so because the drivers seat was kinda wonky. My next care will the a Mazda. A Protetge or 323 or whatever the lower priced four door sedan is called.

Katherine, I agree, overall I did like the season. I just wish Piper would be released from prison. She is my least favorite…don’t know if it’s the character or the actress. And the relationship with her girlfriend (forgot her name) bores the piss out of me. Love most of the other inmates, though.

Okay- I pulled an all-nighter and finished when the sun came up. I thought season two was better, but I did enjoy this season.

Spoiler Alerts for OITNB season 3 ((although I think I am the last to catch up, so we should be safe).

Really bummed me out about Nikki. I hope she comes back.

The panty thing was crazy. Do prisoners really come up with these crazy schemes?

The Spanish girls were awesome this year.

Bennett is gone. Got a little taste of that fucked up family and ran fast.

Dyna’s mother is the fucking worst!

It’s so difficult to pick a favorite. This ensemble is too good. But I think that Pensatucky and V from last year are probably the best characters. Very authentic.

And I agree about Piper and Alex. Although they are the central characters, I find them to be the least interesting.
I don’t know what it is about Piper… is she playing her character too waspy? Maybe she over-acts as some of you stated. I just don’t buy her for some reason.

That is all I can think of right now. I hate it when a season ends and we have to wait like fifteen months to get another season. But I LOVE that Netflix uploads an entire new season rather than the having to wait a week for a new episode.
I really love this show. I expect withdrawal to set it at any moment.
Oh, and that new chick is
        Absolutely beautiful, tattoos and all.

        I finished yesterday. 🙂

I hope Nikki comes back too 🙁 that was a bummer.

Didn’t you absolutely hate Dyna’s mom? I was actually angry over her, lol. Poster child for terrible mom.

I felt like this season was shot differently and the acting was different… I especially thought Piper was more unlikable. Alex was boring… Although the guy showing up at the end as a guard was good.

Did you like the flashbacks being more frequent?

I hate waiting so long in between seasons! It’s crazy.

        Have a good day:)

        Alexa-
I really like the flashbacks. Gives us perspective into who they are and how they got there.
How about Caputto and Fig having hate sex? THAT was funny!
I didn’t notice the show being shot any different (although that is possible).
Piper was a real bitch this year. But I think I actually like her better this way. She is such a know-it-all… Spouting off random facts and stuff. Plus, you know Piper is going to have her comeuppance next season when her panty girls revolt.
I must have missed something, because who was that guard that showed up and freaked Alex out? I figure he was someone from the drug cartel, but I didn’t remember his face.
Oh, and Ching Chong Chang is the best! “Thank you. Lesbian”.

Basically, in the southern if you order “tea” you are going to get a glass of sweet tea unless you ask for unsweetened.

If you are out of the south, particularly in CALIFORNIA of SEATTLE if you can find tea at all it will be unsweet and they expect you to add sugar to cold tea because they are yankee fuckwits so I ask if they have Sweet Tea. I spend 11 days in Seattle once and only found sweet tea at McDonald’s and the idiots apparently didn’t know how to make sweet tea.

I went through the drive thru at McDonald’s today and got TWO large sweet teas and it was full of that tiny ice and had almost no tea in it. Even TWO was not enough. Should have asked for one with no ice and one with light ice.

Luzianne? Lipton? Just regular old tea. boil water turn off heat add bags let steep pour into pitcher add sugar, stir and then I add more water because I like weak tea. In fact I buy a large tea at some of he places that make good tea and add the same amount of water.

@TT~ I have an inexpensive coffee maker that I only use for brewing tea. Two cycles is the perfect amount for a gallon. It is a lot faster than the old fashioned steeping method that I was brought up with. I then add two….yes, two cups of sugar. 🙂

As far as I’m concerned: Arnold Palmers. All the way! So refreshing. Sugar is absolutely essential. I use black tea, Lipton tea bags. Sometimes green tea. About 5 of them to 2.5-3 quarts of water. I let them steep for 30-45 minutes. I like very strong tea. I do a simple sugar syrup. Approx. .5-.75 of a cup of sugar to a cup of water. Bring that to a boil, switch off the fire, and add a cup of lemon juice. Stir the lemon-sugar-water mixture into the steeped tea after you’ve removed the tea bags, and pour into a large pitcher. That lasts me about 2, maybe 3 days. Cool, and crisp, and refreshing. Much better than store bought tea. Black tea and citrus are supposed to help lower your cortisol (stress hormone) levels.

Luzianne is the best. It’s a blend of Orange pekoe and black tea. Boil your water on the stove top. Do not use an electric kettle. The trick to good “sweet tea” is to melt your sugar. You can make a simple syrup or just poor the sugar into the hot steeped tea. Then add cold water after the sugar is dissolved. Use spearmint in tea or lemonade.

my recipe, inspired by Newman’s Own Lemon-Aided Iced Tea

For steeping, I use an old glass Melitta coffee pot. I use a fine mesh strainer to catch tea leaves in case of busted tea bags.

-knot together tea bags (I use 10-12)
-pour boiling water into the pot

-dunk tea bags in the pot, let the knotted end hang over the edge, put the lid on to keep it in place

-steep until water is more or less room temperature
-remove tea bags and squeeze them through the strainer back into pot
-empty 1 can of frozen lemonade into the jug
-pour tea into jug through strainer
-add water to fill to 1.5 – 2 inches below rim
        -add sugar to taste
-screw on the lid and shake vigorously to dissolve sugar.

McDonald’s in Canada serves the fake over sweetened blech fountain iced tea. At least when I still lived there. Basically we had to order brewed iced tea in order to get the good stuff, but it’s never sweetened so you’re stuck trying to dissolve sugar in an iced beverage.
I will admit that it’s much easier to get a good glass of iced tea/sweet tea here but I never know the propper lingo when ordering.
It’s funny to have language barriers moving from one English speaking place to another. Wish I had an app on my phone for that lol.
And whoever suggested the cucumber, mint water, thank you. I think I’ll try to make a batch this wknd. Two questions ; peppermint or spearmint? And do you peel the cukes to avoid the bitterness?
Thank you for the tips everyone, and also for answering my questions. Being new to the country and being new to a southern state has me dumbfounded on many issues.
Btw, I have increased my walks; sometimes I hit an hour twice a day, but with rising heat and humidity they have dwindled down to 2-3 half hour walks. I also tried the tomato exercise, but I’m on a balcony and didn’t have much tomato luck. So I’ve been trying different flowers trying to find some that aren’t too easy to kill. I think that I’m going to give tomatoes another shot. How big/deep of a planter or bucket do I need?
Thanks to all that have taken the time to answer my questions. Much appreciated.

I myself have never experienced dry heat. Since I’ve never lived in it, it sounds amazing (minus the 119° temps) but hot plus high humidity is SO disgusting. It makes everything feel dirty and grimy and the worst part is all of the bugs.

We have dry heat in the the triple digits. Maybe 15% humidity. Low humidity still means bugs-scorpians and millipedes. Being a Californian, I never drank sweet tea, but mother always kept simple syrup on hand for those guests who wanted sweetened tea.
I made my southern husband grits(slow cooking) scratch biscuits, eggs and bacon for breakfast.
Try making some strong ice tea, make syrup with 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and 2 cinnamon sticks, bring to boil until sugar dissolves. Cool add to tea and add 2 cups filtered apple cider. Serve over ice. May add vodka. I also make ice out of cider and tea for this.
Hope everybody had a wonderful Father’s day.

I love my new Flax dress so much, I bought two more in the same style, but different colors. They will be my uniforms for the summer and beyond. They look really cute with leggings or barelegged.
We are going to have to get some kind of window trellis for Little Kyle. She is getting really tall! Lisa Vanderpump is creeping up the back fence and will soon take over all of Glendale. Tomatoes are still green, but big. These are scary plants!
My son is starting college on Monday. I am so proud of him. He and I went to get hair cuts, today. He looks handsome.
We had a retirement party for two more co-workers, today. Monday, we will be down to 9 techs on evening shift–900 bed hospital with a very busy ER. More people want to quit. My manager said and I quote, “You should all feel very lucky working here. If you don’t like it, then there’s the door.” Pray for me.
I have a day off. Heading down stairs to watch a whole lot of really bad TV.

One year we had a really shitty principal. He started the year before and was HORRIBLE. So naturally when the new school year started, people were warning the new teachers. I didn’t know that was happening and neither did most people. BUt on the first contract day, we started with a faculty meeting and he was already hot. He starts ranting about IF we are not happy here we can leave and blah blah blah. These were literally his first words to the new faculty. I eventually put in for a transfer and reported him to the District.

How to bosses get away with being total lunatics?

My sister and other folks would stop by and every time, they rushed to my classroom to ask who died. I was like, it’s like this EVERY DAMN DAY.

I eventually got PTSDlike panic attacks so bad, I couldn’t take it anymore. I went to ER after school a once sure I was having a heart attack. Nope. That’s when the really bad panic attacks started. It never really got better. It was miserable.

Hi Angel, I don’t know what part of Texas you’re in but for me
it’s not just the mosquitoes, but the weird, flying, buzzing beetles they call June bugs. The gnats also drive me nuts, they’re so small that get in through the screens. But all of that is nothing compared to fire ants (OUCH) poisonous spiders, deadly snakes and scorpions. But seeing little lizards outside, is neat and gives me a tropical feeling.
P.S. living on the west coast, as long as you are close to the ocean, it helps eliminate humidity, mosquitoes, as well as many other bugs.
Good luck with the heat and humidity. If you’re near the Galveston or Houston area, I hope that you survived the floods without any damage. I hope that one of us can enjoy the summer without hiding in th a/c.

The storm basically came straight on us. It came in at Matagorda bay between Port Lavaca and Port O’Connor. I’m in Victoria which is about 40 miles inland from Matagorda bay. We got some winds, and a couple of days of steady rain. When a tropical storm or hurricane hits, you have days of intense humidity. Luckily we were not on the right side of the storm like Houston. Ganado, Tx is between us and Houston and they got 11 inches in one day! You never want to be on the right side of a tropical storm or hurricane. I wonder how Tootsie and her ark full of magic tomato plants faired?

SO VERY GOOD. SO VERY FATTENING. Drink sparingly.

Since you have limited time, if you feel like a drama/ thriller I would recommend
True Detective if you are looking for a crime drama
        Or
Jam’ie private school girl if you are looking for comedy.
Those only have six episodes each.

I’ve been making Iced Coffee forever but I’ve never tried to make homemade Iced Tea. This recipe looks so easy, I’m going to make it today & surprise my husband with his favorite Arnold Palmer ½ & ½. Thanks Minky. 😉

ETA: Rhode Islanders are huge coffee drinkers, hot in the winter / Iced in the summer / & our official state drink year round – coffee milk.

I’m so glad you like my recipe. I just made a giant pitcher today. The first time I ever had an Arnold Palmer was in Starbucks. They call it shaken iced tea with lemonade. At about $4 for a venti, I knew I couldn’t afford to keep having them there. Ergo, my homemade version. The way I make it I go easy on the sugar, but if your husband likes it sweeter go ahead and put a full cup of sugar.

RE: Coffee! I’m a freak for coffee. Hot and iced. I love making my own iced at home with a teaspoon or two of chocolate syrup so I feel like I got it from a coffee shop. Ooh, ooh!: Have you tried cold brewed coffee?! It’s heaven!

I had good intentions but I didn’t have any lemon juice. Hopefully today I’ll get my ass to the store. I’m planning on going easy on the sugar or maybe use a substitute (hubs wants to lose 50+ lbs.) 😉

My family has made their own version of cold brewed coffee for 50+ years. Instead of using cheesecloth, we just brew an extra strong batch & keep in the fridge, adding water, cream, sugar as needed. We even make coffee ice cubes so the flavor doesn’t get diluted.

ETA: Dating back to the 1930’s RI had a company (Eclipse) that exclusively made coffee syrup. Their motto: “You’ll smack your lips when it’s Eclipse”. They were bought out in the 90’s by Autocrap & though they’re still manufacturing Eclipse syrup they destroyed the taste (it’s too sweet & tastes like vanilla). I haven’t tried it yet but from what I hear Morning Glory Old Fashioned Coffee Syrup is the closest to the original (& the best tasting).

If you ever come to RI make sure you try a Coffee Cabinet. Coffee IceCream + Coffee Syrup + Milk mixed in a drink or milkshake blender. My favorite – add good quality chocolate syrup = Mocha.
