Love this photo of a Sacramento obeying the bylaws of this board with a lovely tomato garden! I am jealous of the lovely cages covered in colored rubber. They are about $6 each here and the plants are about $3. I wish I would have just bought half a dozen of them because the cheap shit is not holding up over the years and I apparently spent money on the folding kind that hook into triangular cages one year and I hate them. I’d buy the nice ones at the end of the season but they sell out fast here. Buy the $6 cages. That is my advice.
Banjo is getting accustomed to having a 15 minute walk after dinner which we have mapped out so that he visits an appropriate “drop zone” which is not on anyone’s private property. He really tries to keep me on task.
One tomato plant minimum. 15 minutes walking out doors every day minimum. These are the rules of this club, bitches! I’ve got nothing to say today. I do wish some of you would dial back the vitriol. I read a few hundred posts a day here and if 87 are from one person screeching hatred everywhere it’s just a downer. Also, if you don’t have any idea what we are talking about, you need to read and learn before making stupid comments. Especially if it is about Jason Rezaian’s trial in Iran. The whole world does not have the same system of justice that the US does. Sometimes you should just read and learn.
Also, the monsoons some of us probably will not drown our tomatoes beyond hope. If they have fruit already the current fruit will likely crack open from all the water. But they should recover.
I’m also interested if anyone has tried the new flea and tick collars that came out this year. And if anyone has used the stuff from that dynobite or whatever the site is they play on conservative radio which is poison free.
What else is on my mind… Oh I am probably NOT going on vacay for the second year in a row. So I may buy some fat clothes. Anyone have any favorite plus sized online sites? I’m in the midst of an OMG how did I get this fat girl crisis. Sips beer.
And as always please confine your off topic chatter to HERE as much as possible to avoid cluttering up the other comments.
Woohoo! Representing my hometown!
Mommy lived in Roseville off and on in the 30’s-40’s. And she interned with Herb Caen at the Sacramento Bee. Beautiful Roseville’s Weeping Willow trees and the old homes are etched in my mind.
@ Susan,I live in Folsom ( just a town or two over from Roseville) beautiful, but so darn hot! The older I get the more I can’t take the heat. I was born in Vallejo, Ca.part of the Bay Area and although I’ve lived in Vacaville and now Folsom for the last 15 yrs. I miss the cooler weather you get there.
I remember Herb Caen from his San Francisco Examiner days when he was ” The Man”. I’m feeling quite nostalgic now!
Hey Ladies, Herb Caen, SF Examiner days was a favorite down here also.
Monterey is hosting the Artichoke Festival this weekend.
I like the Old Town near Folsom but it is hot up there.
Sorry about the no vacay, TT. Unless you wanted to stay home which is becoming my choice more often as the years fly past.
Are you just looking for play in the yard/garden, walk Banjo, and don’t choke my no longer existent waist clothes that are way reasonable in price? If so, you might check out Woman Within. Nothing chic or wonderful, but good “play clothes”.
I want to go on vacay but I pretty much have to sentence Banjo to solitary confinement when I do. Someone sent me a name of a trainer in my hometown I need to find that email, I know I saved it somewhere. I’d like to take him to the beach. I should have done that when I had the opportunity when we went to Charleston.
Banjo is a MUCH better houseguest than I am…

I was just going to say Woman Within. I buy most of my clothes there.
Try Onestopplus.com. This site has clothes from Woman Within, Romans, and Jessica London brands. Try to catch the sales. Avenue is good but a little pricey. I personally wouldn’t know about these sites, but word on the street . . .
In answer to Angel’s blog, I think OneStopPlus may have changed it’s name to Full Beauty.

BwaHaHaHa I say as i sip on my Miller Lite while wondering where my waist went and why not one plus size model has a big belly!!
I do have gardening going on but this is my first time. I cheated and bought 3 Veg Trug’s and 60 bags of their container soil. The tomatoes are doing amazingly well and I had a few lessons to learn with the real veggies…like who knew that one carrot seed or one beet seed would not yield something that looks like the bunch you bought at the grocery store??? Thankfully friends that have done this for years educated me after they got done laughing their butts off at my stupidity. I must grow the best carrots and beets to redeem myself!
If your beets suck, we will insist you change your name! and um CHeers on the miller lite.

Hey Tamara-
I am curious. Where did the word “tea” come from? As in “I have some really good tea about so and so”.
Did you make that up or is that a Southern term for gossip or info?
I think tea and shade are pretty much an ATL gay scene terms. It was funny when Jackie on RHOMel said something about throwing shade. Everybody wants to be southern. Have you heard how many people say y’all now?
So no I certainly did not invent it but have been around the terms most of my life before they were so “cool”

oh, and by the way…I grew kale. WTF?! Absolutely nasty vile crap! Ripping it all out, I can’t believe that stuff is popular! UCK!
kale is a yankee green.
I should try to grow turnips, the REAL greens. SOMEONE (I blame Yankees) keeps trying to make it about collards… but Turnips are the best greens. Wash in “eleven waters” as my mama says and then throw in a pot with some fat back or hog jowl and boil away. The liquid is “pot liquor” and the best part. Serve with cornbread of course and perhaps some black eyed peas.

I have been told by my veggie lovin farm growin friends that turnips are great… just can’t wrap my mind around that. But now that I am tossing all the kale I have room so maybe I will see! they have to be better than kale!
OMG greens are so freakin delicious. First time I had them I had just gotten to the city at 24 and I had turnip greens with smothered pork chops and some spaghetti and cheese, none of which I had ever tried before. It wasn’t heaven but it damn sure was a little slice of it! I like to use them in my spaghetti sauce actually. And then came, okra, and bread pudding, and…and crawfish, but that’s a story for another day.
Don’t forget to add a little touch of vinegar to your serving of turnip greens before you eat it with your fried cornbread. Makes my mouth water thinking about it. Mm mm good.
I hear that dieticians dislike it now. Too much this or that.
It is different, it must die!
Good source of calcium.
Kill it, kill it with fire!
Although dehydrated and seasoned Kale isn’t horrible. But if we’re going that far just give me some seasoned Korean nori seaweed sheets to snack on. I cheered when they showed the lead actor on the US sitcom Blackish eating them in a recent episode.
I like kale….but then I live in Los Angeles.
I am one of those weird people who GAINED weight while on chemo. Probably because all I could handle were milkshakes and potato chips.
Anyway, after it was all over, I saw the nutritionist at the Cancer Center. This is what she suggested:
Use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate. For meals, have half of that plate as veggies, 1/4 as protein, and 1/4 as carbs. Fruit for dessert. Chocolate is OK, but limit to one or 2 snack size bars, about 150 calories.
The point is not to deprive yourself. I asked about the carbs, and she said carbs are important. They raise the serotonin level, and make you feel satisfied longer. (I hate brown rice, and refuse to buy it. But I love organic Jasmin rice.)
Here’s MY philosophy on food: If I have to limit my diet to things I hate, like kale, lentils and brown rice, then I say “No, thanks”. Life is to be enjoyed. I am now constantly bombarded with Facebook posts on diets that “cure” cancer. They are pretty gross and boring. And I get tired of people telling me what to eat.
If I want a frigging cupcake now and then, by golly, I’m having a cupcake.
By following the nutritionist’s guidelines, I am gradually losing weight, including my gut. And this with little exercise.
By the way, I love turnips. Even as a kid. I peel them, and eat them like apples. But then, I’m weird that way. I love Brussels Sprouts, too.
Eat what you like. As with everything else, moderation is key.
I kept going to weight watchers and I kept gaining weight. Last year, I finally decided enough. I will eat what I want–but be aware of when I was full and exercise. I’ve lost 6 pounds since a year ago. Yes, it’s slow, but it’s going down instead of up. My lipid panel is getting much better and my blood sugar is staying at borderline. I could lose 50 pounds, but I am not going to diet ever again. It just makes me gain weight.
It appears that I’m different. I rather enjoy all greens: kale, spinach, beet greens, Swiss Chard, turnips. To be honest, I buy spinach and kale weekly. I cook them in dishes and also make a provincial green soup. Brings out texture and flavor. I’m sorry you don’t like them.
And yes, TT I’m Yankee through and through so you’re probably right about that… like always.
I like greens too! Swiss chard is my current favorite. Sautee with a bit of butter and lots of fresh garlic, yum. I make smoothies with frozen banana, frozen blueberries, and a ton of baby spinach. Or greens and eggs. A Southern friend of a friend once made a pot of proper greens and brought them to work, and that was life changing for me. We eat at least 7 different vegetables most days around here. And yet I’m still chubby…
@Stephanie, can you share your soup recipe? I need to incorporate more greens into my diet and some good recipes would be great. My mom used to make kale taste pretty good by boiling it with a ham hock and garlic. She must have had a knack for it or something though because when I try to make it, it tastes bitter. If it’s not too much trouble that is, thanks!
I don’t care for raw kale, but I love roasted kale. I drizzle it with olive oil and sprinkle it with minced garlic and garlic salt then roast it until it’s crisp…it’s soo good that way 🙂
Off topic, waaaauyyyyyyy off topic, my husband is getting plasma injections for an old injury so while he slept in pain today I watched RHOC marathon, I’m up to season idk, everyone is questioning their marriage, and excuse the run on sentence, but I’m laying next to the man that I still can’t believe I’m lucky enough to have! I’ll watch the drama and not be in it.
Tomatoes! I’ve gotten probably 20 so far off my no name plants! The taste is delicious and reminds me of being a kid. All that’s missing is snap peas!

Gorgeous plants. Little Kyle is getting big! I was able to work out my upper body, at the gym, today. Arm doesn’t hurt at all anymore. I kept the weights light, though.
@Lisamia
Your avatar is awesome! Are you looking for extra-terrestrials?
Hah! No, Pip. I am wearing a hazmat suit. Had to learn how to put it on and take it off during the ebola scare. I am a medical technologist and volunteered to be on the ebola team at the hospital where I work. Luckily, training day was the only time I wore the suit.
Lisamia, glad your arm is better and you are able to work out again. Just remember still don’t overdo it yet.
Thanks, HKR. I haven’t gone into the pool yet. Will try next week, but just my legs, no arms.
Lisamia, if you are not using that suit anymore can I borrow it? It will keep mosquitos out right?
LOL. Unfortunately we have they burn everything once it’s worn, because it may be slimed with ebola. It’s also insanely hot. I am in about three layers–including the gloves. The medical support people in Africa could only work 2 hour shifts in the suits or they would collapse from the heat.
Well I guess that won’t work in this humidity!
You would walk outside and fall over dead!
For nice looking Fat Clothes check out the Joan Rivers line on QVC.
Mother Nature is shinning on us right now. Three days without rain. Yay! I think that’s going to save us from the river flood. Is it too late to re-plant tomatoes? I’ve got a seed pod I haven’t used yet.
And, 45 minutes after I said this, it starts raining!
Angel(?) I’m sure hoping Mother Nature starts shining on you again. Think you’ve had enough rain for a good while.
Tamara, HSN, QVC, and EVINE shopping channels have a variety of price ranges. The first 2 have actual clothing designer categories, not just reality TV people pretending. What I like is the broad range from basics to dress-up, they are the same style in a 4 or a 24. They do not insinuate that fat has to look frumpy. You get to decide what would be becoming or comfortable for you, plus a 30 day trial period.
When I get sick I binge on QVC and HSN. A few days to a week later, the packages start arriving!! By then I’m all better and the FABULOUS skin creams and age defying body creams go right back! I did recently buy the cold towels, living in AZ they’re a life saver! Those channels are my crack! Then the fever leaves, my senses return and I flip on Bravo and once again the world is good!
I love the shopping channels, too. I haven’t been to a mall in YEARS. Evine has free shipping, 15% off coupons and specials like 6 value pays, all the time. I just got a Brooks Bros. silk and knit cardigan marked down to $40!! (It was originally $248!)
Hey thanks! I’m going to Evine now. 6 value pays?!
I have some of the colored tomato cages. More attractive while garden is just getting started and do not rust as bad as normal ones. Worth the cost, I agree.
I have flowers on my Tami G grape tomato plant. This has to be a record. I mean FFS we had FROST up here in DYT two days before Memorial Day, a week ago when I blanketed all the plants. Three days ago I see yellow flowers! I usually don’t see the flowers until at least mid-June. The basil looks gorgeous and healthy as well ! While I put the pieces of my life back together, these plants and the 30 minutes of walking everyday are saving my sanity.
I like Simply Be. Horrible name, but the clothes I’ve gotten fit well and are flattering. They don’t have old ladyish clothes, but it also isn’t for teenagers. I want to look stylish, not trendy. I wear a lot of tunic tops and they always have a lot to choose from. I can also find summery tops with a 3/4 length sleve which I’m always looking for as I’m self conscious about my fat upper arms. Look online and you can probably find a 30 percent off discount code.
Thank you for suggesting this. I checked it out and they have 27/28 inseam jeans! SO hard to find!
My one tomato plant is doing fine but has not noticeably grown yet. But it’s only been two weeks so I will be patient. You are more than welcome to come and vacay with me on the not so glamorous shores of South Padre Island. Not as beautiful as the Virgin Islands or Carribbean but it’s a beach! And lots of rum, beer, and fireball is flowing.
Ms. Tattles,
I tried the 80.00 flea and tick collar, it did not work on my Australian Sheppard, gave it 6 days and found more ticks than I could count, three on his head right near the collar. I even watched the demonstration video. The vet took the collar back and gave me a free sample of an oral (once a month) tick/flea treatment. I was skeptical but I have not found any ticks on him since the initial dose. We live in tick country, close to the birthplace of Lyme’s disease.
My vet recommended an oral this year. The dog takes it once every 3 months. It cost $50. It works though.
We’re doing the every 3 months oral too. So far so good on the first dose. Bravecto?
I think that’s the name. The only problem I had was getting the dog to eat it. But after paying for it, she sure was going to eat it!
Thanks Natalie. I will not bother with the $80 collar then. We have tons of fleas here. I’ve never seen a tick on Banjo. I thought I had once and freaked out and called Pet Smart and talked to a guy who said he would take it off for me. Turns out it was nothing. 🙂 I’m such a girl sometimes.

I just dropped a couple drops on my dog’s shoulder blades and brushed along her back – no washing on my part. Hope whatever you find works!
Banjo must already have fleas he was biting the skin of the area around his privates. I just put some new Oregano Oil on him. We haven’t had much sun so I am not sure how potent it is. I had to rub some on his legs so he would lick that off and the oil would be able to soak in for a minute. That is sort of working.

Hmmm… Just started the dogs back on Frontline last month. (They are on it for six months up here every year and we have been using it for years). But I had no idea there was an oral option.
They l go to the vet on Tuesday for the yearly on Tuesday so I will ask him about this. I would prefer an oral vs. the oily stuff you put on their shoulder blades. Wish I hadn’t just paid $150 for the Frontline, though. . Shit!
Has anyone heard of anybody over the age of 60, that was able to loose the “spare tire” where ones’ waist used to be, without surgery or pills? I know exercise is one option (I have started walking…again) and diet, but does that really work? I’m beginning to think that this is the way it’s supposed to be……anyway, I’ve ordered clothes from all of the above mentioned places, I’ve found them all to be good with stylish clothes that don’t break your bank acct. I use a regular flea collar for my cocker spaniel, or the kind of drops you put in the fur on the neck (not at the same time) that seems to work pretty well. In past years I would always come to the Atl for vacay (and to see family) but I haven’t been there since ’12 and I don’t mind staying home.
Oh yeah, and I love collard and turnip and mustard greens with some good cornbread and fried pork chops with my own potato salad. This is why I can’t loose weight I guess 🙂
My MIL is 60 and her stomach looks infinitely better than mine (35). She eats very clean, does The Firm exercise videos daily, and gardens. When she drinks she just has a glass or 2 of red wine.
Not a lot of fun, but she looks phenomenal.
I’m in the same boat!! Except, she gets her 10,000 steps in a day (stupid Fitbit) but drinks Tequila every night. Other than that…she has THE best skin ( hates water) and a great body! WTH man??
I call the “spare tire” the menopause middle, and to my knowledge there is no amount of exercise that I am capable of doing that will make it go away. You might be able to shrink it a bit with exercise specific to that area, but it will never go away completely. I’ve accepted that, but still hate it.
@Anastasia and Keepin It if I had a MIL like yours I think I would hate her 🙂 and @ Hasa thank you for keepin’ it real for me, I will TRY to accept it but I’m hoping before I meet the “big donut” god in the sky, that science will come up with some cure for the spare tire/menopause middle. I hate it too.
@ Hasa Diga-
I call the spare tire “Esther Roll”. (Thank you Wanda Sykes!)
She has a comedy special on HBO or Showtime or one of those (It’s called “I’m gonna be me”) and does a whole bit about Esther Roll. It is THEE funniest stand up bit I have ever seen. You will die! Watch it if you can.
Sorry to say, you can’t out-exercise a bad diet. Weight is 80% diet, 20% exercise. The best way to lose that tummy, and yes it is possible, is to eat clean. But you have to decide it’s worth it. 🙂 Good luck!
Aren’t you a guy? Or more importantly a guy with a death wish?

I would love to know if anyone lost the spare tire too! With me it is genetic, mom has it and so did my grandmother and great grandmother. We are skinny everywhere else so it is beyond frustrating. My family doctor told me years ago to just accept it, if I lost weight it would just come from my face or my boobs. genius, right? I would do plastic surgery but I’ve had tough recoveries from previous nose jobs and other surgeries, it seems scar tissue and I don’t get along.
TT ,
Must try Soresto collar for fleas+ticks! It has saved me from the white padded room! My lil pup gets @ least 3 ticks a day but since we got collar last year(and again this year) they don’t attach! You may see one but it’s dead & just on top .. It’s worth the $$ and lasts 8months!!
Ticks freak me out so if it’s the same w you then I will send you a collar on me!! Just need dog size for fitting!! My gift to you for keeping me giggling even when I can’t giggle !! TY!

Grrr…. Lost ALL my TV channels.
Ion has been advertising that you need to update by following their reset instructions, or lose ion channel.. Today is the day. I followed their online instructions EXACTLY.
Now, I have NO channels.
I don’t know how to fix this. Any suggestions? Am I the only person on the planet without cable?
I miss TV.
Never mind. I fixed it.
Turns out, I bent the connector pin when I tried to reconnect the antenna.
Why? Because I have neuropathy in my fingers, and couldn’t feel that the connector was in wrong. My fingers are too numb.
Anyway, I got most of my channels back….except ion channel, which is why I did all this in the first place. Maybe it will pop in later.
The good news is, I have KSMO again, which has “Law and Order: SVU”.
So…..I’m happy.
Whew. Took about 10 scans, but I have all my channels back, plus KSMO. Yay! Walking Dead reruns on Wednesday! They don’t have the most recent season, but it’s fun to rewatch, and see how the characters gradually change and grow.
Happy Cat! 🙂
Glad you fixed it all up! I (sadly) go into panic mode when DirecTV starts to trip out! I go into “All hands on deck mode!” Being an “At home forced into early retirement” person with insomnia…It’s a must! It gets worse. If one of my channels changes its lineup, I freak. I mean seriously. I don’t need 6 hours of George Lopez in the middle of the night
Super glad you got ALL of your channels back!!!!!
I’m happy for you Cat. I’d be in horrible shape if my t.v. went out. I sleep with it on all night. I actually wake up if for some reason the t.v. goes off while I am sleeping. My husband pays the bills online. One month when he went to pay the Directv bill it was down for maintenance or something so he couldn’t pay it and then forgot about it. So it gets cut off at 5:00 a.m. one morning. He had to get up at 6:30 a.m. to go to work but I made him wake up and pay the bill so it would come back on so I could go back to sleep lol.
I’m the same way! My TV is on pretty much 24/7. And I start to have panic attacks if it isn’t working.
One of the best decisions I made was going on the special plan with the electric company. Flat rate of $54 a month. With that, I can run my TV and fans as much as I like. Being at home all the time helps, too, because I have the windows open all day, all night.
Because of this flat rate, I use less gas, so my gas bill is lower. And I don’t have the surprise spike in bills in Summer/Winter.
I also don’t miss cable, although it makes commenting here harder. All my favorite shows are on free broadcast, anyway. Well, except for ™The Walking Dead”. But I get the reruns on a local station, so it’s all good.
Oof….rambling. Sorry. I’m just relieved to have my TV back!
I’m not sure about ticks but the suave selects shampoo in the mint green bottle with rosemary works for fleas. Rosemary is a natural flea repellant. It worked for my dogs. As for greens I love them all but in the south nothing beets turnips. I have also tried cooking them with smoked turkey wings for seasoning that you can get at the grocery. A little lighter on the fat and salt and I surely need to watch that.
Tamara, check out Soft Surroundings (.com). They have beautiful clothes in every size, from petites to plus size.
I love Soft Surroundings also. They have a retail store about an hour from me. The sales associates are superb. They don’t carry everything in catalog or on line, unfortunately. They are a bit pricey, alsi I think sizes run small, but I love their styles.Things fit me as a 5’10” woman that many lower priced retailers rarely do
Reading through the comments, I figure NeverBeenJaxed and I live in the same general area. (planting zone) My tomato plants all have flowers, and if the damn chimp monks stay out of them….we may be looking at a BLT summer! Yay!
Now the walking…..not to make excuses, but I just can’t. Instead I go outside many times a day, wobble around the yard, pulling an occasion weed, or letting Chloe the Wonderdog gently pull me around to every tree for a scratch & sniff.
I use Comfortis for fleas and ticks, i also bath Bailey with organic homemade flea soap i buy on Etsy from WildHerbs. I live in the woods and deer ticks are super bad. Thanks for keeping me entertained, youre commenters are the best!!!
Still waiting patiently on my tomato plants. Put them back outside, since I was attracting ants with the pots inside.
Plants are still tiny, since I am growing from seed. But it looks like they like all the rain. I thought maybe they were getting too much water, but then decided not to fuss and let Nature do her thing.
Hey Tamara, try the Goodwill, great for temporary, will get me by kind of clothing. Also Marshalls and TJ Max located on Barrett Parkway, they have the best selection. I know the drive in that area can seriously suck, but may be worth the trip.
Goodwill was my savior when my weight was going DOWN, and going UP. Now I have clothes from size 8 – 16. Sigh.
JollyChic and ModCloth have some decent plus size. Look for sales at ModCloth. Nordstrom Rack has some good stuff too.
And don’t tell my MIL that kale is a yankee green. She cooks it with bacon fat.
Technically, kale is neither yankee nor southern. It’s an alien plant. It was genetically modified from ornamental cabbage a while back. Yes, it’s true. The health craze has been pushing a GMO green for ages.
Rule of thumb if you are trying to eat clean. If your grandma or your great grandma didn’t eat it, it’s probably a GMO. Just like broccoli and cauliflower all three are Frankenstien veggies from laboratories and all started out as some sort of cabbage.
I’m still gonna eat my broccoli cauliflower soup though.

Wow, I didn’t know that about kale! I have a friend who is constantly posting about GMO foods…and the wonders of kale. I’ll have to pass this little tidbit on.
All the tomatoes we are growing are GMO too unless they are heirloom. I usually grow mostly heirloom but I cheat with an early girl or other GMO one here and there. They are generally modified to be more resistant to diseases and less easy to kill.

When I hit size 16 and above it’s time to shop at Goodwill! I found it better to shop at than Macy’s. They are more organized.
I went to one Goodwill that sorts by color, not size of all things. Why yes, stupid Goodwill store, of course women shop by colors. It’s so fun to rifle through all these 0’s and 2’s and waste my precious time.
Now I stick to the Goodwills that don’t have morons organizing their clothes.
I think we finally had our last freeze/frost warning her in the northeast, so I shall be planting tomatoes (and peppers) shortly.
No recommendation on flea products – two indoor only cats.
Fat girl clothes sites:
jjill.com – pricey, but good quality. Things I buy from there last and last and last. They have decent sales and outlet prices.
womanwithin.com – just went back to them after not being pleased with their selection for a long, long time (cheap and tacky). Bought some lovely long, full cotton/linen skirts of a good quality.
I buy knit shirts and turtlenecks from landsend.com; again, on the pricey side, but they last forever.
I used to like jcpenneys.com St. John’s Bay brand, but they went to the tacky end a while back (neon, neon, neon). Haven’t found much there lately, but when they have a sale on bras, I’m all over it.
I also used to like jessicalondon.com but haven’t found much there I care for in a long time.
“I’m in the midst of an OMG how did I get this fat girl crisis. Sips beer.” Dear Lawd, I do believe we are in the same round boat, save for the beer (more of a whiskey sour kinda gal).
I need to find out a good place to buy a 2 piece for us curvy gals…. and ones that don’t make me look either like I am trying to waewwear last year’s suit and ignoring the 30 extra pounds, or like I am trying too hard and not making it. Coverage from belly button to mid thigh would be nice, lmaooooooooo.
And as for Tomatos…… mine have gone the way of the Dodo Bird and expired. Poor things, but everything else I planted around the same time (potatoes, blueberries, strawberries, sage, lemon thyme, regular thyme, and Aloevera) has done excellently! Even my sage plant is growing, and I usually kill those off first! Any suggestions for me on getting tomato plants to actually, you know, LIVE?
Um, Imma need you to explain the death process of the tomatoes before I can understand how you are murdering them.
Do they whither up and die? Do they turn yellow and die? Are they leaves brown and rusty looking? Do the leaves have holes? Do you ever get to the fruit part? I need to know what sort of murderer you are.
Anything to stop the fat clothes suggestions. I just can’t with that anymore.

Haha, I am laughing so hard at your last statement, I love QVC, hate the shipping 😉
Omar The Tenaker is going to be heartbroken!
Damn! That would be Omar the Tentmaker!
Oops. Should have read all the way down 🙂
Try Overstock. They have free shipping.
Mostly holes in the leaves, it formes flowers for the fruit, then the flowers just…. die off. I pinch off the dead and dying flowers, and the leaves with the tomato worms on them, spray the plants with garlic oil to deter the worms and pests, but I am just not getting any tomatos. The plants themselves are growing terrifically but I am just not getting any fruit from them.
My Cherokee purple is growing well and has flowered by I have yet to see even the smallest fruit. I remain hopeful. The rest are going like gang busters. I haven’t water in a couple of days and it’s supposed to rain for the next three so I guess I will hold off. Another good reason to stay in my jammies all day.

I can only LEGALLY water every Sunday and Wednesday, but I use grey water (extra run off from the bath and shower) to water them every other day. The drought has kind put paid to any attempt at a good veg garden. Is there anything I can try to get these blooms to live and be fruitful?
Watering restrictions almost NEVER apply to plants grown for food. Check the fine print of your rules. )

Hmmmmmm, that is not what the Water Cop told me. All agricultural or landscaping watering is highly watched here. We are about a 6 mo th time period from being as bad as Porterville, CA. They have to have their water for drinking and bathing trucked in once a week. I will check that out, tho. Thanks!
Well the situation in CA is way worse than anything we’ve ever had. But during our drought you could not water lawns or flowers but you could water plants grown for food. so people would get around not being able to water their flowers by planning vegetable in the flower bed.

YAY! I know the water regs are different her for food crops. But I didn’t want to get you arrested. LOL.

I love your blog. We get a dose of Real Housewives shenanigans and then we learn about your tomato garden, it’s the best of both worlds. Have you heard of those black tomatoes called, Indigo Rose? I’m sort of interested in tracking some down and seeing if they’ll grow.
I haven’t. I prefer good ole regular red ones. But I think I am genetically obligated to plant a Cherokee Purple. This year it is going better than usual. Heirlooms can be tricky because they are more susceptible to disease and bugs. The GMO kind are so much easier. Which is why we should go with heirloom as much as possible. I generally hedge my bets because nothing is better than a BLT with a tomato you grew yourself. It really is the best antidepressant.
My petomato died. Before the TTTD comes after me, I live in an apartment!! I dont have any dirt to plant anything!
Hi Josie. We made a little house around the bottle to protect the roots from the sun. So far, Little Kyle is doing well. Maybe try again?
I also live in an apartment and live a strange schedule, so my chances at gardening this year are nil. I do however, know where wild strawberries and raspberries are growing nearby along with mull berries, apples and apricots in people’s side yards. Urban foraging is perfectly fine, so long as one stays off people’s lawns.
I live in an apartment, too. I have 2 pots on my balcony where I am trying to grow cherry tomatoes from seed. So far, so good. But it’s still too early to claim success.
A friend on Facebook also posted instructions on growing a lemon tree indoors. I’m going to try that, too.
âDon’t you have a balcony or a patio or a sunny window?

@Pip, I like “Esther Roll” Lol
TT, I work in a museum and the other day a guest came in she had on a linen dress and I asked her what she was wearing. It’s a company called flax based out of Vermont. They only do linen, and it appears to be primarily geared towards plus sizes. They have a show coming up at the Atlanta Apparel Market. Flax designs.
Micropoop! (As I affectionately call you in my head) YOU ARE THE WINNER! I was breaking out in hives at all the Good Will talk.
I found the Flax people they used go be called recycled threads and are now Mojowoman.com All natural Flax. And for fat chicks.
I HATE buying online but I risked it all to buy the shirt, pants and jacket here. I bought in pistachio, I could not get the jacket in anything but check, bought the shirt in stripe and the pants in weave. http://www.mojowoman.com/flax-spring-2011.html If this shit fits, I could spend a TON of money in this place. The clearance stuff is non refundable. So I measured and gave it my best shot.
#fingerscrossed and now can we stop talking about Goodwill? l can’t stop itching.

Just want to add my thanks., Microop. I went to the “Cheeks” site from Cape May, and found a dress that I just don’t think I can live without. It’s from the Flax 2015 line called “Bold” I think. They have a big selection. Anyway, thanks to you, TT, and the woman who told you about them..
I really hate not being able to sleep. It’s getting out of control.
I just turned 50. Is this a menopausal thing? I don’t know what to do anymore. I take prescribed sleeping medication sometimes (Visterol), sometimes even with a Xanax (which during the day when I am in panic, knocks me out). But at night, nothing.
I am having a party tomorrow with all my best friends from high school to celebrate my 50 (which was last weekend) and they will all be here at 10 or 11 am. And I won’t be able to sleep all night.
I lay here tossing and turning while husband and dogs are snoring away. And I am still awake every morning when my husbands alarm goes off to feed the dogs at 6am.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is this a menopause thing? Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
I get in bed at 10 usually watch a little TV and turn out the light, just to lay awake all night. Fall asleep around 6:30- 7am and get up at noonish. I can not live like this anymore. I want to be getting up by 8 am refreshed from a full good nights sleep.
Please, someone help. Any tips or tricks? And is this due to peri-menopause?
Thanks in advance.
I have a similar problem, but it’s not that I can’t sleep, I want to sleep all day. I swear I am going to go to bed as soon as 8 pm arrives. Then I get a burst of energy at NIGHT. So I blog, I wash dishes, I even consider going to the 24/7 Kroger to shop. But I quickly become tired. and then fight sleep like a kid that does not want to take a nap. I’m exhausted now. I think I am just addicted to the Internet and this is about the time I clean out my emails for the day.
I am hellbent on making TERRIBLE life choices. I want to get up early tomorrow and go to the farmers market. I am not going to make it.
But I could sleep right now, if I would let myself.

It’s really starting to affect my health and my mood. I guess I should just go see my Doc and see what she thinks. Something has got to give here.
I have a lot of nightmares when I finally give up the fight. I have noticed that on nights where I douse me and Banjo with Lavender oil that someone kindly sent me. I don’t have them. Lavender pillows, cachets and essential oils all can help relax your mind. Some people take melatonin. I’d try something like that lest you go all Conrad Hilton on someone’s ass. Serious, Ambien fucks some people up. Try to avoid the drugs.
If you can’t sleep, try to power through the next day with no naps. Then once you sleep at the right time, try to get some exercise. I understand that is limited, but a small amount might help. When I garden a lot, I go to bed at night. I am up because I am not active enough in the day. I don’t think it is perimenopause.
AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

I have never tried lavender oil, but I do love essential oils… So I may head to Garden of Eden next week and see if I can find some.
And I have never and would never take Ambian. I don’t need to be sleep eating and driving my car to McDonalds at 4 am (I have heard stories).
The Visterol is like Benadryl with muscle relaxing properties- non addictive. I checked.
The Xanax only when I am desperate. I’m really frightened of addiction.
But when I did work out daily, I slept so fucking good. However, I cancelled my gym membership last year because we moved. (And I have put on some poundage as a result).
New Gym membership and essential oils- I am on it.
Also, I am a napper. Those need to stop.
Thanks Tamara… Am starting to get a bit sleepy now. We will see…
Pip, around here we have Planet Fitness. It’s basically a chain based on the concept of luring in fat folks who will pay $10 a month (no contract cancel at any time) to join. Of course at TT we have a lot of members. lol. The thought process, which is genius for PF is we will start tomorrow, and it’s only $10 a month. They are making millions and essentially opening lovely gyms for the few people who acutally show up.
I paid $150 a month with a contract for a fancy place in ATL with and outdoor pool that served beer and Cheetos poolside. LOL. I didn’t go there much either.

Because I have moved to the boonies, we are limited to gyms. There is only one and it’s nothing like Lifetime Fitness where we use to go.
But it’s a LOT fucking cheaper than Lifetime was.
I can’t BELIEVE that gyms serve Cheetos and Beer. What’s the point? That’s nuts!
I will keep you posted.
Thanks hon. Gonna try and sleep now.
Hi Pip. I realized a while ago that I cannot fall asleep in a silent room. My brain starts looping around what ever I am anxious about and I toss and turn until dawn. I have a few movies that are on the quiet side with soothing music that are great to fall asleep to. I also use a twelve hours of Tibetan bowls–very soothing, puts me to sleep and gives me lovely dreams. Prairie Home Companion works too. It’s like I need something that’s just interesting and entertaining enough to push the anxiety out of my brain but not to intense so that the sleep can enter and overtake me. I use my lap top for this. Hope that helps.
Ya know what? That is actually a great idea. I have some yoga CD’s that are so soothing. Chanting, chimes, very quiet and relaxing. That’s a great idea and one I hadn’t considered.
Thanks, lisamia!
Welcome, Pip. Crossing fingers and toes for you. 🙂
There is a very popular Tibetan (??) monks DVR I bought several years ago. I used to use it during writing time when I taught elementary. They hated it at first and then started to request it. It’s a lot like white noise only more soothing.
