And Jimmy Kimmel can barely talk about it. I stopped watching late night talk shows many years ago. I don’t know why, really. But I set the DVR and may or may not watch. It is kind of sad to see it go.
Are y’all as verklempt as poor Jimmy?
Come for the tea. Stay for the shade.

Come for the tea. Stay for the shade. Not for the easily offended. You're a special snowflake just like everyone else.
I feel so old. I started watching Letterman day ONE of his show in 1982 when I was a sophomore in HS. Everyday we snuck in conversations in class rehashing all the hilarity of his show & antics that happened the night before. I stopped watching regularly about 10 years ago, but did record occasionally for a specific mega-guests like Presidents, Madonna, etc…
I’ve been recording his shows for the past 3 weeks for his farewell, and I will watch tonight.
I might watch. I usually just watch his top 10. Any idea who the guests will be?
Sounds like there will be several different guests tonight. I’ll definitely be watching. I’ve always enjoyed him and damn if I don’t miss Johnny to this day. Ahh, the joys of aging – NOT.
I think Jerry Seinfeld for one. His wife posted a pic on instagram.
I think I’ll def. try to catch the last show (somewhere on line), when I lived in New York I had the chance to go to a few tapings & to me it’s a piece of American pop culture history. Knowing me, I’ll be choked up. I’m a sentimental wuss…I cried like a baby when Carson went off the air, that damned Bette Midler singing him into retirement w/ the jazz standard “One for My Baby (and One More For the Road) had me in such a way, you would have thought I was 10 years old and my hamster died, smh…
Me too. 🙁
That’s some great hedging in the first phrase! “I think I’ll definitely try…” Tweaks the editor in me. 🙂
Haha. I actually just watched online after work and thought of Tamara’s post! In typical Dave fashion it was dry, didn#t have much fanfare, and he saved the best of what he wanted to share of himself in the music he presented.
About my last entry: yeah, I was aware of the hedging when I wrote it and didn’t feel like tweakin’ it out to make it sound more definitive: it’s such a fun, casual hangout here I figured, “no one cares about the commitment in the statement Girlie, just let it ride”, lol. But never fear, IRL I promise I not only take care to mind my Ps & Qs, but cross my Ts & dot my Is in a fashion that leaves no doubt as to where I stand…on anything, lol.
I thought his last show was when Tina Fey stripped to her leotard and spanks. The networks show that clip every 35 seconds! I used to like Letterman and then he turned mean and I tuned out.
totally agree!
I started watching David Letterman when he had a morning show. He was quirky and funny and I loved him. Then he moved to late night and he kept me company when I was up feeding my newborns and feeling like the only person awake. Eventually I got older and so did Dave and I stopped staying up late. Many years later, my daughter got a job on tv, working with Regis Philbin (who is a good friend of Dave’s) and he was scheduled to appear on their show (which was live) from his studio while taping his own show. He was a jerk. Regis was trying his hardest to make the segment work and Dave did everything he could to make sure it didn’t. Dave was much more interested in making fun of Regis, his new show, and the difficulty Reege was having trying to steer Dave into actually being entertaining. He did apologize later for being such an ass, but too late. I stopped liking David Letterman and now see him as a selfish, self centered, entitled asshole who should fade away into oblivion. Hopefully he will.
I, too, enjoyed Dave on his first late night show. He became a bitter, unwatchable jerk. Will not be sorry to see him sign off.
Ooohhh no! Yuck I hate to hear that! In my pretend world he’s a grouchy grandpa and he and Regis fish together in Wyoming.
oh I definitely think Dave loves Regis, but not as much as he loves doing whatever he’s in the mood to do-or not do!
I’ll watch it. David Letterman is great. An era ends, but I am so excited about having Stephen Colbert back! The one that’s going to make me cry like a baby will be the last Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
The only late show I watched was Craig Ferguson because he obviously was so bored with celebrities. I will miss The Daily show. How about Stephen Colbert as a replacement? I love Colbert.
And what happened to Daily Tea. Please, please don’t stop daily tea. I walked today, and almost bought a tomato plant. The magic works.
Go to the ‘secret’ gardening page bella. Or just post go the latest tea…the magic ppl keep up:)
Good riddance. Can’t stand DL he’s a cranky ass old man.
Probably…..okay yes. I feel kind of melancholy, used to really love him. Then it seemed he became a little creepy. I think he should immediately show up on Watch What Happens Live with Andy. Definitely a good bottle of wine is in order!
I’ll watch tonight, but he’s been off my radar for quite awhile.
The Jimmy Kimmel tribute was very sweet. Thanks for posting.
Yeah…..can’t hardly see his tears for mine. 🙁
I saw the first show and have maybe missed a dozen in 33 years. This and Mad Men in the same week? Too much pain
I enjoyed that tribute…refreshing and heartfelt! Jimmy in his shorts with his brother in his pj’s was an adorable pic too. I’m off to bed but will dvr….the end of an Era. I have many fond memories of staying up late with my Dad watching Dave and Jay. As Jimmy said, Dave has a sly wit where sometimes I found Jay to predictable. He will be missed.
Does anyone remember the old Steve Allen shows. I would sneak and stay up way past my bed time to watch them. They were so hilarious.
Later mother fucker, don’t let the door hit ya in the ass. Needless to say, he did turn into and chose to stay a rude asshole.
I do still miss Johnny Carson though.
Watching now. I’ll miss him a lot.

Awww, the segment with the kids was great and the Top 10 was fun and Taco Bell skit was so silly …. No Dave, no!
I thought Dave’s last show was amazing. He really changed late night talk shows and paved the way for Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel. I will miss Dave.
My husband and I went to several tapings through the years. Since my uncle worked with him, they had us in the green room (really good cookies, sad that that is what I remember but you can’t beat good chocolate chip cookies), let us take pictures on stage after the taping and couldn’t be any nicer. I had heard stories about him before we went and was nervous and worried- but it was so different than I expected. He is a very nice laid back guy- btw, that feud with regis that someone mentioned was all for TV. They are good friends.
The last time we went was about 5 years ago- I wish I could’ve went in recent years but Im glad I got the chance to go. Well, thats my Letterman story……
Back in the olden days, when I was in college, my boyfriend and I went to NYC for a quick trip just to see Dave. Yes, we were naive and thought we could just show up at NBC studios (it was 1986),wait for Dave to finish taping and meet him–or stalk him if necessary. We literally stood around in the lobby of Rockefeller Plaza (with 100 or so other tourists) waiting for him to suddenly appear. He actually did surface in the lobby, but back then most people barely knew who he was. My bf decided stalking was in order, so we followed him and his gf/head writer Merill Markoe to a parking garage. bf insisted that we go talk to him, so we did. I was petrified that Dave would bark at us to leave him alone, but instead he talked to us for at least 20 minutes until his car came. He had on a baseball cap, t-shirt and jeans, with a ratty old cigar in his mouth. I was in love. The bf took a picture and the rest of the afternoon we were on cloud nine. Sadly, there was NO FILM in the camera. I love David Letterman.
