Daily Tea: Friday’s Varietal is Earl Grey

London Rain
When London hosted the summer Olympics, this happened.

April can be such a dreary month. There have been few sunny days but they were great for admiring all of the blooms that are happening. And I suppose we need the rain to keep the crazy pollen count down, but it is supposed to rain all the way until Tuesday!  They say Saturday morning may be fairly dry but rain all the rest of the time.  So the PLAN is to get up on Saturday morning and get a couple peppers plans to put out and let them get rained on for two days.

In other news, I have three baby robins in a nest outside my window They always manage to build a nest where I can’t get a good view inside. They look like a giant ball of lint most of the time. When  I first saw the nest I thought they were all dead, or had flown the nest leaving behind only feathers.  But when the (dad?) comes to feed them these GIRNOMOUS beaks poke up!

Here’s hoping most of you have sunny days ahead and great weekend plans!

Nice to see a pic of my home country…even if it is London. Am going to SCK on Sunday for dinner. That’s about the highlight of my weekend.

So general question…what state would you most like to visit that you haven’t already and why?

I would like to check out Montana or Wyoming or Idaho….they just look so different than any others that I have visited. One of the things I love best about this country is how different all the states are from each other.

I was thinking about going to SCK for dinner on Monday. I have an appointment around dinner time and will be quite near.

I’ll probably just come straight home though. I tend to be fine out and about but feel the need to hurry back home. Today, I had planned to have dinner after my medical visits and was right by my favorite Macy*s I could have stopped and shopped and had dinner and still not been that much later getting back due to rush hour.

I really need fat clothes as I am soon going to be like those people who can’t leave the house unless someone removes a wall. I might just need to find a couture tent maker.

As for a stateside vacation, I really liked the Denver airport when I was connecting through there. Colorado, even in the airport just seem to have a cool feel. Montana or Idaho sound lovely. I like wide open spaces and they seem like they don’t have extreme weather like earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, thunderstorms etc…

I did make it to Colorado before and thought the scenery was just beautiful. I empathize with the fat girl clothes. I put on 50lbs in the last 2 years and I have a wedding in 3 weeks….ugh.

If you’ve never been to Yellowstone…go. And don’t just drive through on a day trip. Spend at least three days there and move to a different hotel within the park every night. Go to Ranger talks, hike, fish, chill. It’s still by far our favorite family vacation and we’ve been to Europe, Canada, Mexico and all over the U.S.

If you like people watching, highly recommend parking yourself near Old Faithful in the afternoon about 20 minutes before it’s supposed to go off. Throngs of Asian tourists come rushing off their bus to snap a picture and then run back on the bus. It’s hysterical. That’s really the only crazy busy part of the park, and you can enjoy Old Faithful in peace and quiet in the morning or evening when the tours are gone.

I went to Yellowstone last spring…It was absolutely wonderful. I stayed overnight at the Old Faithful Inn. And Swizzle you’re right! There were many Asians there snapping away…I saw several tour buses full of Asians. I did get a chance to see the Old Faithful go off and walked through it. I would like to see Mount Rushmore next….

The U.S. has a lot to offer if you are traveling from another country.
It really depends on what you are looking for.
Growing up we had a cabin in Montana on Flathead Lake. The lake is enormous, yet you could see the mountains in Glazier Park across from us. Big Sky Country… You can see the stars forever. But go in the summer. Winters are very cold and not nearly as fun. There’s a lot of the old west feeling there. Lots of dude ranches and cowboy hats. It’s pretty cool. If you go there, you must drive through Glazier.
My Mother has a home in Idaho that she occupies in the summer months. It’s beautiful, but I wouldn’t really recommend it as a vacation destination. It’s kind of boring.
Wyoming has Yellowstone Park, which is pretty cool.
And If you are going to be on the west coast, you should definitely drive down to California. Check out San Fransisco and then drive down to Southern California. You want to check out Beverly Hills, The Hollywood Walk of Fame, etc. California is very beautiful. Northern and Southern.
And New York City is pretty magnificent as well. But all the way across the country, as I am sure you know.

Oh Pip the cabin on the lake sounds amazing! I could do with some of that tranquility right about now. My ex husband was from CA so I have done that state to death. I also used to work at summer camp in upstate NY for 8 summers and would visit NYC every summer. It’s the more obscure states I need to go to now. I want to go to all of them. It is has been a long time since I have been to a new one. Now you are making me want to check out Montana! Have a great weekend.

When I was 12 I was picked from my state to do a Wyoming trek with the Girl Scouts. It was amazing. We made stops on way up and back at things like Sears tower, Mt. Rushmore, and Old Faithful. In etymon gee did real camping for 2 weeks. Tents , cooking over fire, digging holes( you can guess for what on that), hiking, and horses were our mode of transportation to hiking the mountains and viewing the amazing scenery. Highly recommend this trip.

Once I had a dried grapevine wreath outside my living room window, and much to my surprise and happiness, a Sparrow mama bird decided to lay her eggs there. I literally had a birds eye view of what was going on, from inside my living room! Then one day, they were all gone, just like that. I didn’t get to see them fly away though, which was a bummer, because I was invested in the whole experience. As far as the wreath went, I had to throw it away…a nest is pretty gross after it’s no longer needed.

Hahaha! Me too. My Neice found a nest and put it on this thing that was hanging outside of our front door. Last spring I had a robin that laid eggs in it. It was awesome, experiencing that. Woke up one day and there were three little fuzzballs peeking out. I have a video that I have been meaning to send to Tamara. It’s mama feeding the babies and it is really, really cool.
Anyway, I was gone one day and two of the babies had flown the coop. But one was left. I got to watch him as he flew for the first time, and then they were gone.
It was an inconvenient spot for them to be though. We had to tiptoe around our damn house and I wouldn’t let anyone use the front door. It was like a fricking maternity ward around here for awhile. This year we moved the nest and the little house it was attached to down by the lake.
We also have a family of wood ducks in one of our duck houses. Last year my husband and brother were lucky enough to see them all drop out and go on their Merry way when they were ready. They had to help a couple of them get through some obstacles to follow their Mama. I missed it! There is another family down there right now. I really hope I get to see them this year.
I, too am turning into a crazy bird lady. My friends make fun of me.

Oh cool TT you got some baby birds. So far this spring I’ve seen lots of critters outside my house: green anole lizards & brown anole lizards, frogs, butterflies, bees, possums, raccoons, red cardinals, & hawks. I also got these damn owls & woodpeckers that won’t shut the fuck up. I don’t know which tree they’re in, mine or my neighbors, but they are constant noise. Owls have the night shift & the woodpeckers got the morning shift.

I also have some loquat trees and the harvest was abundant this season. The loquats were bigger & sweeter this season. I love going into the backyard and just eating the fruit straight off the trees like some neanderthal. Of course I take pleasure in watching the regular gang of squirrels scatter to higher points as they chirp and bitch that I’m eating their buffet.

My two cats, both males around 8 years old, are not happy with me right now. I’m making them stay inside so they can’t harass the birds and the babies who will soon be leaving the nests.

To show me his displeasure one of the cats pissed in a box of packing paper that I had on the dining room table. I’ve been meaning to finish a paper sorting project that’s been taking up the table for a couple of months now. I’m just glad he didn’t do his thing in one of the boxes of my medical records or other important papers.

Tamara, I hear you when you say your ass is getting big because you don’t get out and get exercise. I’m the same way and I KNOW I need to do it but I just end up staying in the house. I have the more dangerous belly fat than ass fat and I’m a diabetic so it’s even more important for me to haul myself up and get moving. Depression over health issues and a broken heart has been the reason for the inactivity and once you get in that rut it’s so hard to break out of it. I wish I were close and knew you because you’d be a great person to mall walk with. Walking in the mall is the only way I can stand to walk in the upcoming Georgia heat and humidity.

Speaking of baseball bats U.F., I think I’m going to buy one and sit it by my inside front door. My male neighbor ( who is tall and heavy set and around late 30ish) and his partner (female) has a baseball bat leaning against their front door frame. His sister also lives there and works outside the home. That’s three people in the house. I’m a total of one, if I don’t count Ms. Alley, (my cat), in my home. 😉 So, I’m long overdue for some sort of protection. Fortunately we haven’t had any crime in our neighborhood but you never know. I have had two different men, at different times, follow me when I’ve left the grocery store before. So I would take a different route on my way home and lose the guy. This has only happened this year, 2015. If it happens again, I will call the police station WHILE DRIVING! But, I will more than likely get a slap on the wrist OR a citation for being on the phone while driving my vehicle. Just kidding! 🙂

Patti R. A baseball bat is probably a good idea. As for me, I have an incurable nerve disease called CRPS which makes it impossible for me to run and hard to walk. My son who lives with us has his leg amputated above the knee so he’d have a hard time getting to the bat as well. My husband is a cop so I have a 22 pistol on one side of the bed, a Baby Glock on the other side, 4 rottweilers and a Great Dane. If someone breaks in my house and manages to get through all that, it’s definitely my time to go lol.

Me too, Nancy. I have also lost strength and muscle tone by sitting around or laying around just reading or watching TV. Important things neeed to be taken care of and I will fret about them. It would be less stressful to just do it, I have to sooner or later. Even time sensitive things are ignored. On the 15th, I filed for a tax extension. There is no reason I couldn’t have done them in the last 10 weeks. I used to help friends out and do their taxes for them because I enjoyed it., I am or was a very detailed and analytical person. I didn’t charge for it. People trusted me, I never even worked in that field. I was just good at a lot of things. I loved to be busy and admit I liked the appreciation.

My life has become a model for procrastination. Until a few years ago, no one could do most things better or faster, and I had high expectations for myself. I was particular about every detail of my work, home, and admired by my friends. I was the hostess with the mostess, gourmet cook, had perfectly kept home, while usually working no less than 65 hours a week outside the home, often more. Others would consult me for decorating advice. Another thing not my line of work, but could have been.

Now i have dirty dishes in the kitchen, dust bunnies and cobwebs, and piles of mail and laundry. I am allergic to dust, but now apparently more allergic to making the effort to change it. I just pop more antihistamines. When company is coming, I freak out and almost kill myself getting the house up to spec. I am so out of shape, it is like doing a boot camp for me. I can hardly walk when they arrive. This is nuts!

When I bought my house, my BFF childhood friend sent me a IRobot Ruumba as a housewarming gift. To be functional you must be sure items are off the floor during scheduled vacuum times. I feel so accomplished knowing that I can polish off a TT blog, while cleaning my floor. A tip to those who are trying to create structure. Every morning I make my bed before walking out of the bedroom. I make knocking off the dishes my next priority. I then do 10 min (min) scrambles in cleaning/organing each hour. I can then I sit on my fat laurels admiring my minimalistic accomplishments! I know… truly lazy & pathetic. At least it’s keeping my hub’s bitching at bay… For now.

Accepting my situation has allowed me to push through and do all I can. Knowing that cooking for a party will leave me bedridden with a migraine for 2 days? Ok. At least I also won’t be depressed and crying.

Shay, I hope you don’t have Twitter. It occurs to me you would die laughing at my Asian phase I went through for awhile, and am craving again in this dreary weather. I probably even talked about it here somewhere. I call the Asian market the Pig Blood Market because that is an item on offer (though I have never sought it out).

ANYWAY, I am big into soup. I have never had Pho but everytime I watch Anthony Bourdain eating it in Vietnam I always want it. So I make it.

Have you ever seen that commercial where it is mother’s day and the kids make pancakes for the mom and bring breakfast in bed. And the husband is all like “Oh how sweet, they made you pancakes!” and the mom says, “we don’t have the stuff to make pancakes.” With a frightened look???

That is how I make Pho.

Brace yourself. There is always canned minced clams involved.

/shrug. I like it and I am the only one who has to eat it! 🙂

My hearts been broken 2 years, too! Nothing like being rejected by the person who knows you better than anyone else in the world. Its a real mindfuck. Just takes all of your self-confidence and makes you hate everything about yourself. You have to remember who you were before that person. Remember your sparkle. You are still that person. Just because someone stopped appreciating you and tried to stomp out your light doesn’t make that person all-knowing. Change the things you wish were different, but don’t lose yourself because some asshole thinks he can do better.

Once the realize they get all belligerent and rant that this site needs to be shut down! (on the grounds that they cannot post), others just type “Nene” or “Porsha” all day long. There are long diatribes about how stupid, ugly, fat, jealous, hateful and mean I am. It’s a lot. LOL. They never just find a site they like better where they are welcomed. I have a small hobby farm with two horses, a cat, and a pond. Every year Canadian geese stop by and have their babies. They also demand to be fed. I was late taking care of the horses yesterday and boy did those geese give me hell. I hope the weather clears up for you this weekend so you can enjoy it more!

It’s very nice! I’ve had one of the horses since I was five, so she’s the main reason for the place. I’m also on a list for a last resort for feral cats now the last one I got actually came around and even lets me hold him. I’d like to bring him home but I’ve big dogs who weren’t raised around cats.

Is that one of your cats in your avatar?

Yes. She is the newest waif that Mr. Softy brought home. We are back up to 3. She is cute, but we are still trying to get her to fit in with the FatCat and the Teddy monster. Teddy was a feral that Mr Softy brought home, and my fat cat crawled into my handbag at a Petsmart. I am again one cat away from being the crazy cat lady.

Animal Allies called me recently to see if I could take more feral cats, but I don’t want to upset my current kitty.

Cats are very territorial. My three are all in separate corners hissing and growling at each other right now. Little girl cat has been hiding in the guest bathroom for a couple of weeks. Hopefully they will soon learn to tolerate each other.

We loved going to caves and caverns. We’ve hit most of the Dakotas, WY, MO, WA etc. I would love to go to the Carlsbad Caverns, and the organ caves in W.VA. We took the little to the ped opthamologist and he does need glasses. We will have to patch the eye for an hour a day. The Dr. Says it is common in children and most outgrow it around 8 or 9. Then she casually drops that she wants him to see a ped neurologist to see if there’s anything she missed. Totally rocked this mamas world.
The good news is, the little looks so stinkin’ cute in his glasses. Plus we are headed to Destin for Soring break next week. I Can’t wait to plop down in a beach chair and watch the waves.

TT, do you have any asian markets near you? My mom has the greenest thumb but their house has thousand year old evergreen trees surrounding the property and don’t get much sun. She can hardly grow tomatoes but accidentally grows 40lbz squash and unbelievable peppers. She started going to the Indian and asian markets and they sell entire plants (like 2 feet in diameter) of different chili for like $2-3 (same price as a small grocery bag) and the tree is FULL of hundreds of peppers. she’s growing korean chili (she makes kim chee with green apples instead of cabbage), thai bird chilis, tumeric, etc. I want her to grow a miracle fruit plant, but again.. not enough sun. (She’s 71 and a retired surgeon but I’m ][ close to getting her to grow me weed.)

We do have one. It’s a gross Asian market. Many people can’t go into it because it smells horrible. I don’t notice the smell. Growing up in 3rd world country makes me sort of immune to bad smells. What I can’t tolerate is the smell of hand sanitizer and bleach and such. lol.

I don’t go often. I’ve never been during the spring. I’ll go check thanks.

Okay here is my problem with the place. They have great salmon fillets. I buy one and cut them up and free in serving sizes.

The problem is, when I pull one out to thaw and cook the next day I often forget it. For days. And it never smells or goes bad. Like ever. That’s not normal. So I think they must bleach the fish or something. Something is wrong with a fish that doesn’t go bad after 3 days.

OTOH I live all the weird kitchen sieves, and scrubbers, and all of the Asian sauces. They have a good cheese section of all things. I didn’t even think cheese was a thing in Asia (they are not Asian cheeses, they are Irish cheeses and such) I bought some sort of can which what I think is a powder inside (never opened it) that is supposed to be a Pho base. Love the weird candies.

But mostly I just want to know what all those fruits and vegetables I have never seen before are and how to cook them. They even have an organic section. You are making me want to go back.

I live very near a tiny Japanese market that people come far and wide to go to. It is cleaner and more upscale. I have yet to venture there.

Oh and they sell Pond’s face cream from Mexico? Spain? Portugal? Brazil? I have no idea, but it is awesome. Nothing like the US version.

Dammit. I already went to Whole Foods this month and shopped like a Buckhead housewife. I can’t go to the Asian store until at least next month!

Except you know, maybe just to check to see if they have plants.

Asian markets have the BEST seafood and produce. The fish is probably fresher than anything at an american market. They also can filet a fresh/whole fish for you and some markets will fry it, too. The veggies and fruits sometimes look like they fell off the truck because they are all organic and not treated with pesticides. Cilantro is huge and like 30 cents. Lemons and limes are always cheap. All those veggies are amazing with a quick stirfry, a little water (hot pan, little oil, veggies, a lid with a tablespoon of water to cover), and a dash of oyster sauce (corn starch and broth for a gravy). You can Google the veggies in the store for recipes or ask around.

I would need to rent some tables for that. I’ve always loved antiques even as a kid so I have collections of things that “will be worth something one day.” Well this is the day I need the money for all of those things. I’m just too lazy to get it all together.

TT you don’t need to do a garage sale. My sisters belong to a Facebook group for their area. It’s a several mile radius of people. Members of the group post items that they have for sale.

She sold so much of stuff ranging from furniture, electronics, clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, toys, brick-a-brack, etc. Most of the the time the smaller type transactions are done on the honor system “porch service style”. You leave items out on the porch by the door, they show up, pick up goods, and leave money in mailbox or under the doormat.

You never even have to see them or talk to them in person. For larger items you schedule a time convenient to come look and buy. This is like an updated style garage sale and way more manageable than doing it all at once with crowds of people. And the only people that have access are people/members on Facebook in your area/neighborhood.

Libyan tea is called SHAH HEE. It’s a black tea I think. It’s a lot regular American tea, if a bit strong. On special occaisions ( I guess) they put peanuts at the bottom. It’s served in little shot sized glasses. When I was young, and we would travel, my parents would order coffee for breakfast and I would order hot tea. Everyone thought this was very British of me. If we were in England it cause me to get a ton of special attention from the restaurant employees. That, and I was pretty damn adorable. 🙂

I prefer to think it was me sticking to my southern roots. And dairy has NO business in tea.

Yesterday I was outside moving my potted trees around, they’ve all bloomed and need some room for their branches to breath. (Laceleaf Maples, miniature Lilac and pine tree species) And there were 2 juvenile Bald Eagles soaring overhead for 10 minutes! If any neighbors saw me, I was running from one corner of the yard to another, trying to keep them in view. Gorgeous and so majestic.

And I’m right there with Angel and others who feel their lives have “become a model of procrastination”. In the next few months, I have to move out of the place I’ve lived in for 20+ years. On top of caring for my mom & stepdad, both who were diagnosed with cancer over the holidays. And I need to find a new job. After years of being a highly employable person, I can’t get a toe in the door.

Although I did interview for one big-wig assistant job where they made me sign a non-disclosure before the interview. And I think I lost the job because after the interview, I was giving my mom an overview on the phone how the meeting went. And I heard clicking on my phone (this big-wig is in telecommunications). I think my phone was bugged!! Yes, that sounds crazy but it seemed too coincidental.

I’ve been meaning to try a highly recommended dvd on stretching exercises. This woman has been doing it for 40+ years and it’s helped her maintain great muscle tone. I’m going to start with that …

One minute he was “I am your friend comrade”and giving me cigarettes and the next he was bashing me in the head with the butt of his rifle. I hated the screaming meltdowns. I used to tell myself over and over, “He won’t do this when he graduates from highschool”. When he really drove me nuts, I used to take him to the park and duck pond because I knew I wouldn’t beat the hell out of him in public. Also he could run around and get good and tired and go to bed early.

One time I was moving a dracena marginata plant across the room to a sunny spot and got stabbed in eye by leaf. The next morning it was painful and extremely light sensitive. I had a difficult drive downtown to EENT doctor, my good eye wanted to close in sympathy. My eye had become infected overnight from the leaf touching it, cleared up quickly with a salve, but surprisingly painful.

I got stabbed in the left eye by a potted palm that I was moving. I had to go to an eye clinic where they put some ointment in my eye, and I had to wear an eye patch for a while. For the next year or so, it hurt every time I touched or rubbed my eyelid.

Are you sleeping with a patch? Cornea injuries hurt like hell. Can you express a few bottles so you can take a pain killer? Call la leche league. Also, they have topical anesthetic drops. Feel better soon.

Not good to hurt. Take the pill, patch your eye, and get some sleep. Feel better soon. I nursed my kiddo for almost 2 years. Was hard to give up the bed time nursing and the first thing in the morning. Your eye will get better; corneal injuries hurt like hell and take a long time to heal.

I believe that if you keep your eyes open, you can learn a life lesson everyday. What did I learn today? That Wal-Mart may not be the place you want to be in a severe thunderstorm! Lights flashing on and off. Coolers lost power causing flooded floors. Registers down. Rain flooding the entry/exit areas. Fun!

And before anyone responds, I’m obviously kidding.

Damn I didn’t think to do that! It was a deluge for about an hour. No one wanted to try and get to their cars.

Recipe for the day to get you in the summer mood.
    Coctel de camarones-Mexican shrimp cocktail
1cucumber peeled, seeded, and diced ¼ inch
2-3 seeded minced jalepenos. Add a serrano if you like heat
4-5 chopped roma tomatatoes or 2 beefsteaks
    2-3 celery stalks finely chopped
    4 thin sliced green onions
1 cup chopped cilantro/ fresh coriander
As much sliced avocado as you like
    1½ cups clamato
1 cup salsa I use herdez
1 cup cocktail sauce I use cross and blackwell shrimp sauce
    ¼ cup fresh lime juice
2 lbs cooked, peeled shrimp. I use medium
    Dash of worcester sauce
Couple of dashes of tabasco or valentina or franks red hot to taste
    Salt and pepper to taste
Blend all ingredientses together in large bowl except for avocado.
Chill for at least 30 min.
In the restaurants they serve it in sundae glasses garnished with avocado slices and lime wedges and saltines on the side.
At Casa del Cinco Gatos we eat it soup bowls with avocado and lime wedges and tortilla chips.
Serves 4 as light lunch entee 8 as a starter or the 2 greedy people at my house as dinner.
This is great for hot summer nights. Can increase, use little shrimp, and serve in a punchbowl at a party.
Frozen shrimp is good, but please don’t use canned stuff.
As a beverage I recommend cold Mexican beer or margaritas or sangria.
