The Daily Tea For Thursday

Barcelona
Barcelona

It’s time for a new feature on Tamara Tattles.  We are all starting to get to know each other and get off topic in posts. This is entirely my fault, because Lord knows I started it. But I think we need to get back to on topic only discussions in the other posts. But I’d still love to hear all your stories, problems, advice and general random thoughts.

I think I’ll start making a new post for this every day and see how it goes. I’m sure we will break into a melee of fights soon. But hey, let’s see how it works.

Each day will have a photo of a new city that looks fun and appealing. Today I picked Barcelona as I am looking for a get away if only a virtual one.

So let’s try to be nicer in here and have our chats. I reserve the right to moderate at will.  I think we need to give those that are not interested in our personal drama back their forum. I seem to be making EVERYTHING about menopause and will do my best to contain my personal whining to these posts.

Feel free to ignore these posts, lurk in them, or contribute. I ask that you continue not to post links or bring in information from other sites.  This is just some good old kitchen table talk.

Fabulous idea. Re: the picture, it reminds me of the movie version of mamma mia. I’m am going to start the first fight by saying that I absolutely loved Pierce Brosnan’s version of SOS. I think he tried to sing with emotion and it sounded like it. He is an experienced singer and it gave me goose bumps.

Ahh, La Rumbla. Went backpacking across Europe many years ago after college in the day of the Eurorail. We would sleep on the train at night and in the morning be at our next destination. Barcelona was one destination, we got off the train at the crack of dawn and could not figure out the city (did not know where the tourists should be) all the weird building that looked like they were melting, no one spoke English or understood my “school Spanish”. All we knew was we were suppose to find the Rumbla……

Is there no eurorail anymore? The Ramblas… at least parts of it are now places tourists should not be after dark. 🙁 I’m not 100% sure if I’ve been to Barcelona or not. My mother would drag us through a country or two a day in some sort of whirlwind quest to have been everywhere.

That’s not called the rumbla. I think you must mean Las Ramblas, which is the main drag from the city down to the ocean. That is the view from Parc Guell. TT if you go to Barcelona you should visit every one of Gaudi’s designs! Cash Battlo literally made my soul hurt with its beauty.

Thanks TT for starting this Daily Tea” with this city. I lived in Barcelona for a little over three years in my early 30s. I get homesick sometimes. I loved sitting outside on a little table along Las Rambles in the late afternoon and people watch. Such fun. My husband and I got married in the downtown cathedral. We had to do it the Catholic way because unknown to us, Spain is more Catholic than the Catholic Church. We tried to get married civilly but after several weeks of filling out papers, I asked what would happen when we finished with all the bureaucratic paperwork. We were told that we would have to swear that we embraced the devil before they allowed us to marry. (And probably throw us out of the country). As I said we did the Catholic thing.

My husband is from Cuba originally, a third generation Spaniard, then came to live in the US at age 10 when the Cuban revolution occurred.

When he graduated from college he and his brother took a trip to Spain to see their family’s original point of origin and tour the country. He had beautiful pictures of Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, and Madrid. Said his favorites were Valencia and Barcelona.

This picture of the very colorful tiled architecture is beautiful.

Barcelona is absolutely gorgeous and full of gorgeous people! Tamara, I am wondering what are your favorite countries/cities that you’ve traveled to? I remember reading that you lived in Libya at a time. Was that by yourself? Just curious – I follow you on twitter and saw you said your parents were good old American rednecks! I can so relate to that by the way 😉 this all just led me to wonder more about you and your travel experience. I think we all would love to know more about your life. Sorry if this is breaking any rules!

It’s not breaking any rules in the Daily Tea! 🙂 However, I just ate for the first time all day and when I wait this late I get narcoleptic. I am in the middle of the whole to nap or not to nap dilemma (it’s kind of too late to nap).

Anyway, I was raised in Libya, living there for all of my elementary school years. My father basically to a series of one or two year contracts there while working for Lockheed. Every six months or so we had to evacuate for two weeks for visa reasons. Each time this happened, my mother thought it was the one and only time we would be able to see Europe. So we literally went to two or way more countries a week. Every single time except towards the end when we would spend lots of vacations in Lebanon because jewelry was very cheap there and my mama loved her some jewelry. A gene that I have inherited in spades.

I have fantasies about retiring there, mixed with my other crazy thoughts. Miss TT seems to have her finger on the pulse of many of us. We come here to escape, and yet we are looking for something above trash. Oh, and something below Scientific American magazine. Love the effort put into this blog site. I have an old poster I purchased at the Sagrada Familia church(Barcelona) over 30 years ago hanging in the garage. Guess where I’m going to have a cocktail right now? WISH I had noteworthy company. I have never been to Spain… Sigh. I did always find Madrid interesting, but I have only been to London once with my family when I was in Highschool.
I’ve been to Mexico (Cabo 3 x and Playa Del Carmen twice). I also have done a couple Caribean cruises. And that is the extent of my international travel.
We did go to Maui last year though. We stayed in Kannapolli if anyone is familiar. What a gorgeous spot.
I am not a great international traveler anymore, though. I prefer to stay on US soil. I too have some wacky anxiety issues!

Give me a pool any day… I don’t want critters nipping at my legs, ugh- skeeves me out just thinking about it. I’m a freak.

I spent my summers growing up in Santa Fe for a month, then two months on a lake, and I also am afraid of natural bodies of water. Begged my dad for a jet ski for YEARS then became too afraid of the water to use it after a couple years. No traumatic events triggered the fear. All I know is I don’t know what sunken ships are under me waiting to pull me down!!! So, my poor dad decided he’d just be the one to use the jet ski!

Anyways… So I can’t go in natural bodies of water (and it’s a big commitment to get my hair wet), but I has no problem in the Caribbean and certain beaches in Hawaii. I think it’s the clear water?

I sooo disagree with you, girl! Here’s the thing, you only live once. If you want to dye your hair purple, blue… Whatever. If you have a career that allows you to not be all polished and professional looking, I say “Go for it”!
I am a Minnesotan with Scandnavian heritage. Blonde/ blue eyes. About five years ago I was at my hairdresser and I said “dye it black”! She was like “WHAT”?! But she was psyched (kind of a hairdressers dream, I think to completely change someone up completely).
Anyway, I didn’t tell my husband, just showed up at home with black hair. His response was “kick ass”! Changing it up is a blast.
However, warning…. It did take about a year or so to get it completely back to my natural color, when I decided to go back. It’s a long process.

Agree totally, T2! Blond warms the face and defeats the sallowness we all get (unless we’re super dark, in which case damn near anything goes). I just had to lose my blond to go home to red and my hairdresser got over-enthusiastic and strawberry blond plans became cinnamon hair 🙁 It will grow and heal and we’ll go lighter slowly….and I feel like you’ve invited us all to your salon to chat about this and that. Thank you.

oh for shit sake, you wont go bald coloring your hair unless you do it your less and do mulitple applications in a day or 2. also, the granny look is in now and many 20 somethings are going gray because that steel look is awesome. i hate purple on anyone who can’t rock that look and it can be rocked at many ages it just depends on your personallity. i have been doing hair for 24 years and trust me, keeping a more natural look as we age tends to be best for most as tt has said. i do however have an artist client who tends to experiment alot and can get away with it and she is late 50’s.

Agreed, those Fergie daughters are ridiculously funny and maybe close portrayals of the real people, in terms of weirdness.

Nothing like that extra weirdness from the gene pool comprised of all cousins.

My daughter graduates college in May and asked if she could backpack through Spain and Paris by herself. Of course we weren’t going to fund a trip like that (not the by herself part anyway). So we decided to go as a family as a graduation gift to her and she was happy! We loved Paris, but Barcelona was breathtaking! We went to all of the Houses of Gaudi, La Rumbla, Paleo Guell and stayed at the Majestic Hotel, which was beautiful. TT if you haven’t been to Barcelona, I hope you go one day to see the gardens in the photo you posted! That was beautiful! Someday, I’d like to go back to See more of Spain. Hi Tamara,

    I’m a long-time reader, first-time poster.

I love your blog, and purple pen snark. I don’t even bother watching a lot of the shows these days, just read your recaps.

I’ve been on that roof in Barcelona. My parents also dragged us across the world, so I got the travel but from them. They were born in Lebanon, I was born in Canada, and now live in the U.S. I will be dragging ny kids to Lebanon and Egypt this summer, so I hope they inherit the travel bug too.

Back too Barcelona…I’d give it jut a meh, it’s more of an architectural city, with some building that are tricked out. The alleys off Ramblas as sketchy to scary.

Several years ago I spent 5 days cruising the Nile, followed by 2 weeks hitting the amazing sites in Egypt. Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Abu Simbel, Karnak, etc., etc. It was the trip of a lifetime & one I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to go on. Not only would I love to go back, but I’d love to spend a year fully immersed in the culture. Unfortunately I’ve developed major travel anxiety. 🙁

I am 42 and read here every day, though I seldom comment. I’m married, have two bio kids (20 & 18), 2 bonus kids (22 & 19), 3 cats, and 2 dogs including a 14 year old lab with one foot in the grave and another on a a banana peel. I love in NorCal, half the time outside of SF and the other half of the time in the Sierra Nevada Foothills.

I have pretty severe adhd and, lucky me(!), am in perimenopause which is (1) making me a raging bitch (2) making my hair fall out and (3) has made my formerly Cher in the 70’s straight hair curly and frizzy (imagine, if you will, Bernadette Peters after sticking her finger in a light socket). I can deal with the bitchiness, irritability, weird cycles, weight gain, even losing my hair in clumps BUT the suddenly curly hair is going to land me in the effing loony bin. Has anyone else had their hair texture change on them during menopause? Is there some kind of support group for this?

I’ve had the reverse happen. Mine is very curly naturally and is getting less curly and also thinner. Can’t afford to loose much more my thyroid disease allready makes it thin. I thought I was the only one with a hair transformation. I could deal with all the other stuff it’s the hot flashes that are killing me.

Mrs Meems, yes I can identify with the straight hair going curly. I can one up you unfortunately on this. My normally stick straight, can’t hold a curl using a curling iron hair has now decided to become curly in certain spots. Not all over my head mind you which I might could handle but in several different spots around my head. My hair stylist said she’d never seen anything quite like it. Guess we can start our own support group lol.

TT: After popping off, upon hearing the news about Big Ang, that I was quitting smoking I am going to use this forum to admit that I am still smoking. The e-cig I purchased is already collecting dust; in fact, I am smoking a cigarette as I type this. I am a failure.
On another pathetic note, I am a lonely person in my mid 40s and am officially “perimenopausal”. I come here to laugh and post rambling bits of nonsense, kind of like I’m doing now. I often lose my train of thought because my brain is mush and I have anger issues. This site turned me on to American Horror Story, I became a freaktard of the highest degree and a lover of any and all things written by UF. So, thank you Tamara for giving me entertainment and advice and deleting the stupid shit I send when I’m over medicated. I love this site.

Quitting smoking is very difficult. I smoked for about 20 years and quit about ten years ago.
I have some advice… Don’t quit quitting!!! Eventually it will click for you. But DON’T call yourself a failure. I bet I quit at least ten or fifteen times before it worked. And one thing that really, REALLY worked for me was the Nicorette Fruit Chill Gum. I started with the four mg. and then eventually dropped to the two mg. But that Fruit Chill Gum, man. It was like crack! I still dream about it. It tastes so good and I chewed it for at least five years. It is expensive, but no more expensive than smoking. Don’t give up on it, tulsateacher. And don’t beat yourself up over it. Try and try again!

By the time I quit, I was painfully aware that cigarettes were dominating my life and that I was addicted to them. I did not like it! I always told myself if I could go a week without smoking I was home free. Once I was off for a week, I never looked back. It is the single most healthful thing you can do for yourself. I LOVE Spain! Barcelona was one of my favorite cities but I loved the entire country. The people were lovely. So helpful and kind! In my younger days, I had the privilege to travel extensively all over Europe and the Pacific Rim as part of my job. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything! It really broadened my perspective on humanity. I came to the conclusion you get exactly what you project. If you are kind and respectful that is exactly what comes back to you. I never experienced or was treated as the ” ugly American”. People went out of their way to help me and I was most appreciative. I wish everyone could travel abroad. It reinforced how very lucky I am born here in the US. The contrasts in the standard of living were sobering . What we take for granted here in the US, is in stark contrast to the poverty I saw in my travels. It was really startling. There was always a language barrier but on a humanity level we were all the same. We shared the same concerns, and all were willing to share what had. I’ll never forget my last day in Spain. Thay night my translater invited me to her home to meet her family. There in a small apartment, crowed with her immediate and extended family, they had prepared a modest dinner, lots of wine (of course) and what a wonderful evening we had. They treated me like royalty! It was so touching. I wanted to pay for some of the food they had obviously purchased for the event (and could not afford) but they wouldn’t hear of it. They were a proud people and wanted me to embrace the relaxed dignity of their parting gift to me. I’ll never forget it. It’s not how much stuff you’ve acculated in life, it’s the spirit in which you share your blessing that is the true measure of ones character. It was a once in a life time moment. It changed me forever! Money has come and gone in my life, but never has money been a measure of my worth nor anyone else. It’s character, one spiritual beliefs, and relationships with others rooted in mutual respect, that bind all of humanity together.

Go to the crocodile farm outside of bangkok. Largest in the world with an amazing zoo. Its weird because you could pet every animal – even the tigers. Not because it’s safe, but because it’s thailand and if you get bit you have no one to sue/blame. Please don’t ride on elephants or make them paint. Just donate money/feed them. Visit an orphanage or 5. $10 at Tesco Lotus and the kids will think you’re santa (they don’t usually get snacks/treats). Hold onto your purse/bag around monkeys. Remove shoes before entering temples. Carry small amount of money for bribes. Book flights when you get to Thailand to Chiang Mai or Phuket (cheaper) and hit the little islands (koi samui, phi phi, turtle island, etc.) see if you can piggyback a trip to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat. Don’t do ANY drugs. Don’t carry anything for anyone (even if it looks like soap or a doll), don’t point with your feet, don’t walk between 2 people talking without ducking, dont ever reach over someones head, always “wai” (hands in prayer and a little head bow at chin or nose level), and please bring a little dictionary/translator as most outside bangkok don’t speak english.:)

Don’t forget the food courts at the 7 story mall (bananas) – you need to buy tickets, so don’t stand in line forever like a moron, get to the front, then get sent away. If you aren’t a size 8 or smaller, ask your hotel how to get to “the fat mall.” Great clothes, handmade, for $3-7.

I cannot go to Spain. My friend was there a few years ago. She loved it and said all the women are trim and beautiful. She felt fat with her extra 15 lbs and very self conscious. Me, with my more than 15 extra would be uncomfortable or feel like a freak.

Ever since I quit smoking 3 packs a day cold turkey 35 years ago, I have had weight issues.

Color your hair ladies, whatever makes you feel good. I feel good about that I stopped coloring at about 64 years old. Evveryone loves my white hair, I still have a bit of black strands in the back. Anxious for pure white and do not miss the expense and time in salon ever 4 weeks.

My very thick and coarse straight hair continues to thin since my early 40’s. If I had not started with extra, I’d be bald. My hair texture is now fine, not coarse any more, but still straight as a stick.

I tried gaining weight between appointments with her (3 months apart) but was only able to put on 1 pound and I think it was because of a heavier sweater. So you are being sarcastic about your weight right? I’ve got bones poking out everywhere and you can count my ribs. My legs look like ropes with baseballs tied halfway down for knees and my behind is so flat I could use those butt pads Kenya used to make fun of Phaedra. I have a large bustline but if I didn’t, turned sideways and stuck out my tongue, I’d look like a zipper. Being the same size you can’t possible need Lipo.

I fricking love Cameran! She was on Real World: San Diego (which actually was the last Real World that I watched). Even then she was so sensible and had a self-confidence that I found refreshing.
I like her as the moderator of this show. And I think she should be the only female cast member in the credits. Last year they had that one chick, and then this year they replaced that chick with Landon. But I really just think it should be Cameran with the guys. They all love her and there is kind of a little sister thing she has with them. No need for any other women.
Katherine… Oye! She said in the last episode that she bought thirty (really?! Thirty? Come on!) new Blazers and that new librarian hairdo. She is trying to play the part of the Senators wife (she wishes), I guess. I’m sure she is having lots of fun spending T Rav’s money. God… He is such a sucker. Poor sap!

Just started watching this season. I really like it. I can’t get enough of the tall blonde guy that can’t commit to a woman. He is hot and when he couldn’t fit the sport coat cause his arms were to long. I almost had a hot flash with impure thoughts lol.

Oh yes. I’ve found my people. I thought I was the only one who liked Southern Charm. I was almost afraid to admit it. Now I know I’m among friends. The thing is I actually know people like these people. I didn’t say I like them but I do know them lol, especially one like Whitney’s gin soaked mother. The one I know is named Lenore and she also has a mama’s boy who she just slings money at to make happy. Everyone she knows in her mind is beneath her. My favorite person is Cameron. She tries to school these Peter Pan acting men-boys to no avail. Yet she keeps trying and they never get mad at her because they know she loves their stupid asses. Landon I’m not sure what her role is going to be. Shep must have some genes from the missing link with arms that long but he’s still cute. Whitney just likes to twist Catherine’s tail. T-Rav is running for Senate because he figures the rest of them are crooks too, they just haven’t been caught. Finally Craig. He wants to find a job where he works from 2:00-5:00 p.m. that pays 6 figures so he can sleep late and party all night. Who doesn’t? Thanks Tamara for giving us a place that we can talk about anything including Southern Charm.

YAY! Somewhere to talk about Southern Charm…I love Southern Charm. I even like everyone on the cast (so far), which is kind of weird. I will rag on that ignorant ‘Raise the Roof’ ad campaign that Whitney produced though. Good lord, what he thinking? and what was T-Rav thinking? stupid, stupid, stupid is all I can say. I was totally on Kathryn’s side on this issue, and to me, she is more mature than T-Rav ever thought about being. She does need to lose her hair-do though…whatever she is doing with it, makes her look like an old maid or spinster, or something, and she’s too young and pretty for that. I LOVE Whitney’s mother, Patricia, and the relationship she has with her butler dude. I want the butler dude for myself 🙂

Wow! Craig having a cocaine problem hasn’t even occurred to me. But that make sense.
He is rail thin, and his face is gaunt, he’s pale… could be. Could just be alcohol though, too. Either way, he is definitely fucking up.
As far as T-Rav… He is a booze-bag for sure. He was shitfaced on WWHL.
I think he and Katherine are both miserable. I don’t see any chemistry between them. They fight and moan a lot. Neither seems happy at all.
Oh yeah… And that Campaign Ad… WTF was Whitney thinking? It almost seemed like he was sabotaging Thomas.
I understand why Katherine was pissed. But I thought she over-reacted. She didn’t go home that night! I mean, come on!

I think one of the reasons I like Southern Charm is in my 1st marriage I was involved with people that remind me of them. My sons attended the private Day School, I was President of the large Boys Choir of our City who sang at the White House and I was a member of the Jr. Women’s League. Most of the people I knew were only acquaintances. A few were friends. I became soccer coach to many of the Country Club Set’s children. That must have put me in the category with hair dressers and therapists. I guess I have the kind of face that people feel they can confide in me. They would tell me who was cheating, what CEO was embezzling from his company, who’s teenage daughter was pregnant and the real reason someone was selling their house. I never spread the gossip so people continued to confide in me. It was fun at first but then I realized how superficial these people were. I’ve never been a materialistic person and decided that I did not want to raise my children with those values. I resigned from the Jr. Women’s League, the Boys Choir and put my sons in public school. I also divorced my ex because he had that mentality. I married a police officer 18 years ago and have been happy ever since. I look at all the individuals on Southern Charm with maybe the exception of Cameron and see people that are not fulfilled in their lives. Oh most of them have plenty of money but are they really happy?

BH Wannabe, if I was still friends with these people, I would love to give you what I will call the “North Carolina Charm” experience lol. Some of the people I knew might not have been on quite the same financial level as the SC crew but are basically the same people. One of the main reasons I disengaged from them is that even though they had plenty of money and should be happy they weren’t. They had the same problems as normal people but being from the south they talked about each other in hushed tones from across the room at a party as they smiled, waved and said “hey sugar”. So basically they were full of shit, Bless Their Fake Hearts and I just couldn’t stomach it. Sorry to disappoint you BH Wannabe.

I predict these new Daily Tea posts have the potential to solve all world problems OR cause the end times to begin. One or the other!

Have been to northern Spain, in San Sebastian, which is right over the border on the coast. Had the best, the BEST calamari in my life. Ordered a second plate. Was torn between exploring Spain more or returning to Paris––Paris won. And it was great. Regret not having more time at the Louvre. Will never forget watching the dancers at this little park on the Seine, where various groups all converge to dance. Within a tiny space we had at least 4 distinct cultural styles of dancing going on but the Tango was my favorite that day.

Madonna was on the late show lip singing her ass off. She’s wearing a grill and ripped nylons and chains. She refuses to go down without a fight.. Her song is called Bitch I’m Madonna. Guess she’s calling these young girls out! Do you think she’s still relevant or have you said”bye Felicia”? I’m on the fence. her dancing is flexible old woman. Why am I up when I took Ambien

Snort, I just couldn’t put my finger on it but thats the best description! I’ll stay loyal, ever since she broadcast into my bedroom on community access tv. It was Burning Up and only shown after midnight. However, now I roll my eyes at her, like you would at a hyper, un-self-aware teenager.

Hi all. Great idea TT!! Thank you. Barcelona is definitely on my post retirement see the world list. I work second shift at a huge very busy hospital, so one of the ways I wind down, when I get home, is reading everyone’s posts here. My fantasy trip, at the moment, is to rent an RV and follow Garrison Keillor and the Prairie Home Companion show around the country. My luck, he’ll probably retire before me. 🙂 I am 62 and post-menopausal, thank goodness. It lasted about 10 years, but wasn’t very intense for most of it. I am sure my family got a little tired of me saying “Is it hot in here, or is it just me?”

Oh sweet! I love hearing him talk. We saw him with Prairie Home Companion in the summer, 2014. It was at the Greek Theater–beautiful outdoor amphitheater. During the breaks, he’d come out to the audience and sing with us. Guest stars included Martin Sheen and Lili Tomlin. Well, hoping to retire in three years, so GK and I both need to take our blood pressure meds and hold on!

I don’t speak anything fluently, including English. Whenever I am in a foreign country and trying to speak the language I end up accessing the wrong one. Usually Arabic for even the simplest terms. It usually goes… Shukran…I mean gracias.. I mean… MERCI! Merde! I do eventually get to the correct language.
