American Horror Story: Freak Show Season Finale “Curtain Call” (Precap)

AHS Freak FInale 1

By: Urethra Franklin

Warning: Spoilers below

Well Freaktards I’m sad to say that the Freak Show ends tonight. Though last week’s episode had a season finale feel to it, we still need to find out the fate of Elsa, Dandy, & the rest of the freaks. First, I will quickly recap episode 12 before I ramble on about tonight’s finale.

Elsa sold the Freak Show to Chester in order to move forward with her plans to become a star in Hollywood, but her plans changed when she learned that her agent Stanley was actually a con artist. When the Freaks found out the truth about Stanley, they chased his big dick down for some vigilante justice by cutting off his arms & legs & dressing him like Meep 2.0 and encaged him in the chicken coop. Since Elsa saved the twins’ & gave them a new life, they warned her she had to leave immediately or risk getting tortured & killed by the freaks.  Elsa couldn’t believe her beloved Freaks would turn on her; but she fled the Freak Show in fear for her life after Bette & Dot told her that the freaks know she killed Ethel. Needing money, Elsa sold the Freak Show again but this time to Dandy. After she got the cash, she drove off & fled to Hollywood.

They synopsis for tonight’s episode titled “Curtain Call”: The Freaks rebel against the new management. Dandy prepares for his debut performance. Elsa arrives in Hollywood.

I briefly saw a few spoiler photos & a short video clip from tonight’s episode; but by the time I went to my other room for my head phones and came back, the site had finally been shut down by the Ryan Murphy Mafia after providing spoilers for most of the season.

AHS Freak Finale 2

I saw a picture of Dandy in a tuxedo, and Bette & Dott in a wedding dress with a minister in front of a red curtain. It could belong to the Freak Show stage or the stage in his bedroom at the mansion. Is this reality or a fantasy sequence? Dandy has been obsessed with the Twins ever since he first saw them at the Freak Show. When they lived with him briefly he proposed to them, but they turned him down. Maybe they couldn’t refuse his proposal a second time considering that he now OWNS them.

I saw a short video clip of what looked like a Hollywood news report about Elsa. She was exiting a building wearing a black coat, black gloves & sunglasses, and flashy jewelry too looking all Hollywood glamorous. The audio was poor quality, so I sought my headphones only to return to the dreaded PAGE NOT FOUND message on my screen. I can’t believe I missed that clip by only seconds. Damn you Ryan Murphy.

I have read speculation that Elsa’s Hollywood storyline might connect another season with the Freak Show by ways of the infamous Black Dahlia murder case which was fictionalized for a storyline in season 1 of AHS:Murder House. Interestingly enough that real life murder involved an actress that was mutilated and cut in half. Remember what happened to Maggie last week? That could have been a nod to it.

AHS Freak Finale 3

How did Elsa get her own TV show in Hollywood? My theory is that it somehow involves her past life in Berlin as a dominatrix whore. Did Elsa blackmail her way to the top? Or does she whip some sense into a studio executive? In the promo trailer we see Elsa dominating a man on all fours wearing a rhinestone dog collar.  The man looks like David Burtka, whose guest appearance for AHS was announced at the same time as his husband, Neil Patrick Harris.

AHS Freak Finale 4

I also saw a photo of Edward Mordrake with Twisty as part of his dead freak crew which is no surprise because Murphy said we’ll be seeing them one more time. In the pic Twisty has his regular clown face, not the deformed face, but he does appear rather sad & spooky. DUH he’s stuck with Evil Face for eternity.

Who actually summons Mordrake? It has to happen on a Halloween night. Will it be because of Dandy or Elsa? Which Freak will be added to Mordrake’s entourage of dead freaks? Though I would love to see it happen to Elsa while on live TV, I think it might be Dandy. Just like Twisty, Dandy is unable to feel any regret or remorse for his murderous ways, which is why he’d make the perfect candidate to join Mordrake & Evil Face in hellish eternity. Don’t ya think Dandy might be thrilled at the idea of becoming part of Mordrake’s freaky dead posse?  Dandy has felt like a freak his whole life, and he feels most comfortable & normal when he is around them.

In an interview Finn Wittrock (Dandy) said that the finale ultimately will involve a showdown between Jimmy & Dandy. Who lives, who survives? Do the twins really marry Dandy? Will there be any more connections to other seasons revealed? Why is Desiree in a maid’s uniform at the mansion? Who does Dandy shoot with his gold gun? Will we hear Elsa warble a song one more time or will anyone of the Freaks perform another anachronistic song?

Watch AHS:FreakShow tonight on FX at 10 ET, and this last episode is 77 minutes long, so set extra time on your dvr. Of course I invite all of you Freaktards to join below in comments to praise, snark, & bitch about the finale. You can stalk me like Mordrake looking for his next freak at twitter @Urethra_F

I loved the las episode . I am all ready for tonight, but my question is, what GOOD freaks are they going to have next season if they keep killing off the ones they have now? But I do have to say I am excited about the freaks turning Stanley into a Freak! Way awesome.

Ok UF darlin’, I know tonight is the finale of my favorite show AHS. I wanted to tell you just how much I appreciate you taking time out of your busy life to provide us with insightful and entertaining precaps. They always make me think and make me watch for things I probably would otherwise miss. Urethra, you are awesome in my book and through your precaps and recaps, I have grown to consider you my friend. I’m also going to miss my freaktard brothers and sisters who helped me get through Blake’s amputation with their caring and concern. This has become a safe place for me to come an enjoy myself and say whatever came to mind. Looking forward to tonight’s finale and will be in withdrawal till the next season starts. Hope Tamara will be able to again chain you to the radiator next season. Don’t think anybody could do it justice like you. Love all you guys.

I’m gonna need a box tissues. My eyes are watery from “allergies.”

What I loved about all the Freaktards that commented here this season is that NO ONE wrote anything derogatory about any of the real life “freaks” on the show.

In other forums I’ve read some horribly rude & shallow characterizations about the “freaks”, but not here. We all loved Ma Petite & grieved her death. We thought Paul was handsome hot. We praised Amazon Eve as a transgendered actress. Everyone here respected the freaks and never made fun of them. For that I am pleased considering that TT’s place can attract some real nut jobs. Not saying y’all are not nutty (lol), but y’all are a respectful bunch of nuts! #Freaktards

WOW ! It never even entered my mind. Nor did I think about anyone else here doing it. I AM so glad you mentioned it. Make me proud that we as a group only make fun of those that deserved to be laughed at, those that make fools of themselves. But for our freaks….the real ones….they are to be commended. They, along with the actors, did a great job entertaining us for the season. If anything, they made me look at them in a different light. I respect them all.

Mordrake was going to take Elsa until he heard Twisty playing his toy piano. i think it will be Elsa joining Edward rehearsing a friday show. now the twins like sex maybe they will give
    Dandy a try.

I hope you are able to watch the show tonight. Sorry I haven’t recapped the last 3 episodes, but life got in the way. I would LOVE for Mordrake to claim Elsa in a dramatic way, hopefully on live TV, as America GASPS in horror. But Dandy is a strong candidate. Remember he once said “I am no clown” as he spoke about his mentor of murder, Twisty. I think it may be poetic justice for Dandy to end up in eternity with the clown. But RyanFuckingMurphy decides and we have to wait one more hour to see where he takes the story.

i made a pot of coffee a while ago so i can see the finale tonight. Dandy isnt a “tortured soul” like twisty was, he feels nothing, he is just a desert wasteland. Elsa fits Mordrake better. i say the twins marry him and then he will get “freak” justice and the twins inherit his money and the surviving freaks move into Mott Manor. in an early episode did Gloria Mott say something about the Roosevelts? like NEVER mention them in her house? i read an article today that said Franklin and Elanor were distant cousins and made me think of her telling of inbreeding to Dandy

Ok did I just get plunked? I thought I was pretty insightful about AHS, but the one caught me with my mouth open. I was not expecting this. I can’t believe I didn’t see this coming when Dandy killed the majority of the freaks. That should have been a dead give away that Elsa would be reunited with them in a happy ending. I knew Dandy would receive freak Justice. That was inevitable. I was disappointed with his death. I was so hoping for a Stanley type invent-a-freak scenario for Dandy that would render him harmless but still aware of everything. I am curious what kept Elsa from having to go with Mondrake and being allowed to rejoin the freak family. It obviously was her heaven. She always wanted to be loved and there she was loved by the freaks and would be playing to a packed audience each night.

Ok in my defense the episode hasn’t finished for me but….I really appreciated UF’s comment that nobody picked on the freaks. I found it a bit offensive that Gable called out Elsa’s morality clause when it came to Jupiter (running the freak show) and that is what she was defending. Not her films. I called it back in December after the Pepper episode that Elsa’s TV show will be on a Halloween night resulting in a visit by Mordrake. I’m assuming it appeared that she died of hear attack or something, because I did not see any bloody wounds on her after he stabbed her.

I have to say I was underwhelmed with his return. I expected more from him story wise. “Your place is not with us.” #ByeFelicia

Urethra, Hannah said it so well, you make AHS 100% more enjoyable with your clever input before and after each episode. Thanks for all your time abd effort for the freaktard community. It is fun to have others to speculate with about upcoming shows and even interpreting what we just saw.

This ending was pretty sad. So many dead at the hand of useless Dandy. I also thought about the bullets, that sure wasn’t a “six shooter”. Elsa was not happy alive, even when her Hollywood dreams came true. I was glad to see Twisty had his normal face and some survived, possibly creating another generation of freaks.

All season long I have been trying to decide whether season 3 or 4 was better. Season 3 was infinitely campy, and it was a completely different tone that S1 & S2 which was closer to the “horror” genre.

I absolutely loved S1 in its originality about telling a classic haunted house story. Though Jessica Lange was a supporting character that season, she was indeed the STAR of that season from the start.

S2 scared the beejeezus out of me. The psychological darkness in that film alone was horrific, but throw in a nun possessed by the devil, & two generations of Bloody Face killers truly made it an American Horror Story.

S3 was just campy, with a lot of scene chewing by Jessica, Kathy, Angela, & Frances which made it very entertaining & fun to watch. But nothing really scary in it to me.

S4 had several elements of horror that was not supernatural, but more realistic in nature. Killer clowns, snuff films, psychopathic serial killer, freaks of nature, human exploitation, harvesting humans & body parts for sale, killer puppets (imaginary but still scary concept).

I don’t want happy endings in any American Horror Story.

I think S1 is the only season to not have a beautifully sad ending. It ended with Jessica Lange being stuck raising the Devil’s baby.

S2 had an emotionally & psychologically EPIC ending for most of the characters that did not die. SIster Jude died w/ dignity & redemption.

S3 ended up happy for the new Supreme while the old Supreme died of cancer & ended up in a hell of “knaughtyyyyy pines” w/ the axe man.

S4 ended in true horror with mindless violence for most of the freaks. Elsa Mars actually had a happy ending to her life. She died on her own terms, and is now back at the Freak Show with those that she loved & felt safe with in her Afterlife.

I can’t help but think that ending of Freak Show is somehow like the ending of LOST, where they all end up spiritually together in the end for the Afterlife.

I’m gonna say that season 4 was better than season 3.

I appreciate S1 & S2 equally so those always will tie for 1st or 2nd place.

    So my rankings are: 1, 2, 4, 3…. OR…. 2, 1, 4, 3.

UF, thank you so much for the precaps and a place for all of us freaktards to discuss the show in a friendly place. I agree with your ranking of the seasons. I started with S2 and was blown away, so had to watch S1. I was over excited for S3 and was therefore a little disappointed, but loved most of it. And then, this season, I was not expecting so much, but ended up liking it a bit more than coven.

I do think this ending was Lost-like, and why it’s strange that I liked it here, because the finale of Lost made me want to bitch-slap the writers.

I can’t even rank them- just wrote this whole thing and deleted it because I was disagreeing with myself. I think S2 was probably my fave, minus the alien subplot.

S4- I did appreciate the reference to how society treats outsiders- very Ryan Murphy. Although if people are saying horrible things about the actors that played the freaks on other blogs then I guess the allegory was missed. ‘Merica, am I right? Overall not too scary of a season which was a little disappointing. Besides that creepy ass doll of course, glad it had a brief part. #byescary Twisty started out absolutely terrifying but was so short lived and in the end was more sad than anything. I’d watch Dandy all day- hope he becomes a regular. Meow.

Thanks for the great precaps and recaps- they were really great. I normally don’t comment (although I sip all the ATL tea that TT serves) but feel at home with the freaktards. Looking forward to next season.

      SPOILERS

Season 1 for me had a happy ending with the family dead together raising their newborn forever. Celebrating Christmas as a family forever, with the ability to ‘shutout’ the bad spirits and protect other families from them. It was a bit bittersweet, but it left me smiling. The antichrist baby ending was a typical twist ending shown after credits or just before them from b-grade horror movies. I thought S1 was perfect (except for the annoying teenage daughter).

OMG You just made me realize that the Harmon Family from S1 & the Freak Show family had nearly identical endings. Happily ever after in the Afterlife.

Yes I hated the teen age angst of that annoying character/actress from season 1 and season 3. I hope to never see her on AHS again.

Next year I absolutely want Finn Wittrock, Frances Conroy, Naomi Grossman, Angela Bassett, & Jessica Lange to return.

I was interested in Ryan Murphy’s new project Scream Queens; but then he hired Leah Michelle & Emma Roberts, and now I just want to gouge my eyes out and slice off my ears and eat them.

Oh good call on the horror ending homage in S1- that went over my head entirely. I liked that the daughter had been dead for a while in S1- didn’t see that coming. S1 and S4 did have similar endings- interesting. Happily Ever Afterlife.

        Speaking of Scream Queens,
I have to watch it if Jaime Lee Curtis is going to be in it. As a huge horror film fan I can’t miss that. Roberts nearly ruined Scream 4 for me so I couldn’t care less about her. It seems a lot of singers will ‘star’ in the show. So serial killer horror crossed with University Glee club? Sounds like a huge mess. At least Ariana Grande will most likely die early on. She will be too busy touring to commit to a star character.

But yes I do love Jamie Lee Curtis and she is the only positive, but there are too many negatives for me to entertain it any further.

Well, y’all had my attention there for a moment about Scream Queens, but then someone mentioned Ariana Grande who reminds me of her disgusting half brother Frankie Grande of Big Brother fame and it turned me completely off the show. I could even stand Leah Michelle and Emma Roberts. Guess since I didn’t see Asylum, I’ll just have to appease myself by watching it on Netflix. See there is something to be said for procrastination. Lol

But GUYS Arianna can’t commit fulltime to a tv show. She is most likely going to play the ‘drew barrymore’ character and be a big name for the show who meets a bloody drawn out death very early on. At least that is my assumption. She would lose money if she took on a fulltime tv role over touring so I doubt she will stay for long. Lea and Roberts I believe are going to playing the larger roles.

The more I think about the ending, the more I kinda like it; but I only like it because all the Freaks were together “happy” in the Afterlife living the only “good” life that they knew. But I still expected a less happy ending for Elsa.

I absolutely loved this last episode (although I could’ve done without the shooting spree and watching Dandy drown). Elsa got everything in life that she ever dreamed of – but in the end, her happiness was with the freaks and theirs with her. I thought it was a lovely tribute to Jessica Lange. I was disappointed that we didnt get to hear her sing one last time at the very end but maybe she was a fan of the Sopranos. I can’t imagine ASH without Jessica Lange though, I hope she changes her mind and returns.

On the @AHStory twitter they have posted a Goodbye to Jessica Lange, so it looks like she finally decided to stick with her decision to leave. She will definitely be missed. I hope next season isn’t a complete clusterfuck… or more of one than usual, without her.

I very rarely post anywhere and having trouble getting this to complete. It keeps spinning saying “posting comment.” Hoping it only goes in once if ever. Lol

Hi I’ve been following your AHS Prequels and Reviews on Freak Show this season. I tried to watch Asylum twice last year. It was very short-lived though too scary / upsetting for me. Then I started the Coven series as I love the main stars and just had to see how they interacted playing witches, etc…and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I was hospitalized and missed the final three episodes. I read here that the series had started on Netflix so finally got to see the final episodes. Your reviews and explanation of the series characters connections piqued my curiosity. I finally watched series 1 & 2 (finally shuddered through it). Thanks for giving me the interest in the intertwined series. Sure made Freaks much more enjoyable for me by connecting the characters.

Questions: What is the phrase repeated at the beginning of each show? Sounds like “great skin.” Searched it and there are many interpretations. I’m sure you know the real answer. Also, was Pepper in the final scenes with Elsa? I didn’t see her, but being older may have missed her (sometimes that happens lol). Would that mean she was still alive somewhere? Finally, what was with the group of wealthy patrons who continued to show up, party and donate with each new Freak the owner put on display? There were quite a few of them and they were there frequently. Was that continuing the storyline of the German fetish lovers and their “snuff films,” etc…? Thanks to both you and Tamara for all the entertainment I’ve found on this website.

Any guest late to the party here is still welcome. I appreciated your comment very much.

I have asked the same question since season 1 about the phrase that is repeated in the opening credits. I haven’t read any confirmation anywhere, but I have read somewhere that the phrase is “I’m scared. I’m scared. I’m scared.” That seems to fit right? Especially if you saw the opening credits with those nightmarish visuals in S1 & S2.

No Pepper was not in the final FreakShow scene with Elsa because Pepper was still alive at that time… I think Elsa died on Friday, Oct 31 1958… Pepper was still alive in that year living with her sister. Pepper was sent to the Asylum in 1962.

No there was no connection between the wealthy patrons of the Morbidity Museum and The Watchers from Berlin.

If you missed the last 3 episodes of AHS:Coven, my detailed recaps can be found by using the search box for TT’s site.

And what a party it is! Thank you for the answers to my questions. Yes, “I’m scared, I’m scared” makes perfect sense now. I just never heard that in my head as “great skin” kept ruling my hearing.

Interesting about Pepper thanks for clearing that up. Such a perfect character and a great actress portraying her. I just could never understand how many freak lovers were drawn to the museum over and over with each newly acquired oddity. Guess they were as curious then as we are today. Freaktards abound then and now. Lol

Yes, I finally did get to see the final episodes of Coven on Netflix. I will definitely go read your reviews on that series soon. Thanks for all fun and facts you provide.

With your vast knowledge and clever writing style I think we should crown you with the title of “WICKEDPedia.”

Elsa dies in 1960, the finale episode moves forward to that year when it ends. Remember that their calendar is off, it’s an alternate reality (which allows for Bowie songs in the 50s). The first episode is September 3, 1952 and according to Dot’s diary, that was Saturday, but it was actually Wednesday. On our calendar, Oct. 31, 1960 is a Monday, but on the show that was Friday night.
I know too much about this stupid show.

My laziness & apathy about the end of AHS:FreakShow is so obvious now.
My first thought was to say that Elsa did die in 1960, but I was too lazy to go the DVR and rewatch those scenes so that I can actually give a correct answer.

Since I only watched this episode once and didn’t recap it, I gave a hasty answer. Plus I also gave Elsa’s Time Magazine cover too much weight. It was dated July 1958, and in reality Halloween of that year fell on a Friday.

Now I do recall reading somewhere, maybe someone commented here, about the fictionalized dates early on about the diary entry, and in hindsight I do remember that the dates were fictionalized. I had a brain fart, and I’m glad to know the proper answer. Thank you Freaktards.

UF, what if it really wasnt a happy ending for Elsa? wasnt that the outfit and song she performed when the crowd booed her? what if her hell is to perform for a packed house that boos her performance forever?

That is one way to look at it. I think it was a very ambiguous ending. Was her Afterlife a constant loop of prepping for a performance & performing in an eternal Hell loop that was similar to the fate of many in Coven?

I only watched this episode once, so I need to go back a rewatch again to pick up on any subtle hints or nuances. Personally I don’t think Elsa is anyplace bad in the Afterlife at the Freak Show as depicted in the end. She was in place where her victim (Ethel) forgave her & welcomed her, as well as the other Freaks that were skipping around happy & embraced her with open arms.

But the ending of Freak Show was almost exactly what happened to the Harmon family after they ALL died in the first season. Spiritually they were all trapped together in that house decorating a Xmas tree. This seems to be a common schtick of Murphy’s for 3 seasons now to show us the Afterlife of the characters.

And you KNOW we’re still going to watch, because it’s going to be some awesome idea, and they’ll have other great actors, and it will look amazing, and then Murphy is going to shit all over it. BLECH.
