American Horror Story: Freak Show “Magical Thinking” (Precap)

AHS Freak Magic 1

By: Urethra Franklin

Warning:  SPOILER ALERT with the Mother of all spoilers too.

Happy New Year Freaktards! I’m experiencing a holiday hangover after spending over two weeks with three generations of my big fat ethnic family. They have exhausted me, and I have been fighting the cold from hell. I’ve been sick for days now. I am foggy headed, I lost my voice, I smell like vapor rub, and my torso is very sore from all the steady coughing. I’m so ill that I have an excused absence from TT’s radiator chain. Though I’m in bed, I was still able to stalk some places for some spoilers for y’all, but I can only muster enough strength to share them without any creative flare.

The synopsis for AHS:FreakShow “Magical Thinking”:  Elsa prepares for her move to Hollywood. The Twins grow enamored with a traveling salesman. Dell plots Jimmy’s escape from police custody.AHS Freak Magic 2

The last scene we saw before the winter break was Elsa on the cover of a 1958 Time magazine as a bona fide TV star, so we know she does make it in Hollywood.  In present Freak Show time Elsa is preparing for her move to Hollywood, thus needing a new owner for The Freak Show. He is played by Neil Patrick Harris in his AHS debut as Chester, a traveling salesman. He claims to be a magician, but he may be nothing more than a demented ventriloquist who has an unhealthy & bizarre relationship with his dummy that he claims “relaxes him.”

AHS Freak Magic 4

The fabulous Jamie Brewer, an AHS veteran & fan favorite, returns to guest star as a live personification of his dummy. But is she real? Or is she his imaginary friend? Or a hallucination?  Or something supernatural? Her role looks wickedly maniacal as she seems to laugh as Chester performs the saw-a-person-in-half trick when it goes terribly wrong, and he ends up gruesomely splattered with blood.  Is this a flashback? A fantasy sequence? Who did he saw in half? I’ve seen a spoiler photo of the woman lying in the box, but I can’t determine who it is.

AHS Freak Magic 3

I have seen several other spoiler photos posted on a spoiler themed site that are taken directly from tonight’s episode. I cannot show these because the Ryan Murphy Mafia is already trying to kill me with The Sickness, but I will describe exactly what I saw. I may be right or wrong, but I will explain what I think is happening:

A picture of Dot on her back with a male figure over her, and her mouth is wide open either in sexual pleasure or pain or BOTH. Kinda like the look from a virgin who is getting penetrated for the first time. I’m pretty sure the man is Chester because he is wearing a red shirt, and from the promo we know that he is obsessed with the Twins.  Plus in the last episode the Twins have developed a more positive attitude about embracing life together and are eager to have sex.

A picture of Jimmy in a hospital gown on a bed, and his face looks bruised. Remember he’s in jail on murder charges so it could be the jail infirmary.  Remember in the last episode we saw lobster hands at the Morbidity Museum?  Maybe this scene is related to that if Stanley convinced Jimmy to cut off & sell his hands to pay for his defense lawyer.  Also his father, Dell, is thinking up a plan to help Jimmy escape from police custody. Maybe his transfer to the infirmary is part of Dell’s plan to help his son escape.

A picture of Desiree aiming a gun at Dell in her trailor.  After I typed out my theory, I checked back to the spoiler site & they updated and posted the mother of all spoilers, a 15 second video. So I had to delete my half-wrong theory, but NOW WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS…. AND OH MY FUCKING GOD!!! Warning, major spoiler here: Desiree is pointing a gun at Dell with the intent of killing him. He’s crying and he confesses that he killed Ma Petite, but then SOMEONE ELSE shoots him in the head. I won’t tell you who killed Dell to at least keep something a surprise, but ohhhh it’s sweet justice for Ma Petite because the Dingo did not eat the baby. That’s a reference that our Australian Freaktard Micheal should smile at.

AHS Freak Magic 5

I came across another picture on the official AHS Instagram account that was just posted yesterday. I don’t know if it’s a spoiler for tonight’s episode or just a promo picture, but I have never seen it before. It’s a picture of Twisty’s shadow lurking behind a circus tent with the caption “one more day”. Does that mean he’s coming back in tonight’s episode? Or does it mean one more day till AHS returns to TV?

Ryan Murphy has said that Twisty & Mordrake will be back one more time this season. If anything, I expected them to be in the final episode, but who knows. SIDEBAR: If you look at Elsa’s TIME magazine cover, it is dated July 1958 and tells us her show is on Friday nights.  Halloween is on a Friday night in 1958. That would be a reasonable time to expect Mordrake & his death entourage with Twisty. Don’t forget the Mordrake superstition about freaks performing on Halloween night. I don’t think this will happen tonight, but since I’m jacked up on sizzurp I might be over analyzing that Twisty picture.

AHS Freak Magic 6

Watch episode 11 of AHS:FreakShow titled “Magical Thinking”  tonight at 10 ET. It is 65 minutes long so set extra time on the dvr. Expect lots of magic metaphors because Neil Patrick Harris is a practicing magician in real life, and Ryan Murphy created this character & rewrote this episode just for NPH.

I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow (Thurs), and I don’t think I can do a recap this week, so discuss this episode and everything AHS below. I plan to steadily bomb the comments section with all my thoughts. You can stalk me on twitter like I do the cold medicine isle @Urethra_F

Yep negative thirty three degrees Fahrenheit. This weather pattern of bitter cold has been here about two weeks (last dec/jan/feb is was below zero 20-25 days out of 29/30/31 of the month!) I am so hoping this year will not be a repeat of last year….however it will make watching my hometown boys kick ass in the frozen playoffs against Dallas!

Your precap, even in a Nyquil induced haze was, as usual, spot on. This was my favorite episode so far becuase it had NPH, Jamie Brewer and Dandy all in the same space. Can we get a spinoff????!!! Sending you lots of feel better love!!!! =)

Jacque, I am so in agreement with you about Green Bay kicking Dallas’ ass being a diehard GB fan even though I’m from North Carolina. Packers rock, but CRAP ON A CRACKER -33 degrees is too cold for man or beast. It was 10 degrees above here and we can’t wait till tomorrow when it will be back in the 40’s even though that’s too cold still. Stay warm and healthy so you can cheer our team on to victory on Sunday.

Thanks for guessing, but it was Elsa that blew his brains out when she found he killed Ma Petite. Maggie & Desiree brought back Ma Petites body from the Musuem, and Maggie showed Elsa her body in that big jar. Of course Elsa was horrified. Shortly after she walked in on Dell confessing to Desiree that he smothered MP & she shot him in the head instantly. #JusticeForMaPetite

Best thing I can tell you is to rest as much as you can. I slept 14-16 hours a day. Some days naps added to that amount but it helped get me back to about 86% so I could work….

Ha ha right? Goosebumps terrified me in general- it would be funny to read them now and see if they are remotely scary anymore. There was also this Alfred Hitchcock presents show (from way back when obviously- was black and white. I was a weird kid and watched Nick at Night more than anything else) that did an episode with a ventriloquist doll and that scarred me for life.

Who slept with the twins? Who technically slept with him? Both? Or did one ‘shut down’ and ‘ignore’ it ao it was 1v1?

I don’t remember how they described the twins as far as that….anatomy but it seemed like they were both getting a simultaneous experience. But in one of the first episodes they said the twins had two sets of lungs yet kept showing one inhale a cigarette drag and the other exhale so why bother remembering.

Was it just me or was the Axeman in the scenes for next week? I don’t mean just the actor but the actual character?

Yes Mrs M that was Danny Huston ( the axeman from Coven) in next week’s scene. It was revealed earlier in the season that he is Massimo Dolcefino, an Italian prop artist that also crafted Elsa’s prosthetic legs. I suspect he might use his skill to make hands for Jimmy.

No I realize he has already been on this season as the leg maker- but in the preview scene it seemed like he was dressed like the Axeman and carrying an axe. I probably just got over-excited at another potential bridge to an additional AHS season. Wishful thinking I guess.

OK LOL at the big bucks comment. I get ONE frozen burrito & I get to lick an empty wine box.

OMG you’re right about him holding an axe in that scene. I had to go and look again. I have no idea what the axe is for. But you know if I find out, I will explain & spoil all in next week’s precap blog again.

I can’t believe Jimmy sold his hands. Nice to see Danny Houston comes back next week to help him.

On a scary note, Jamie Brewer/”dummy” puppet was truly horrifying. Seeing her go to town with that club on that woman is going to give me nightmares.

    Only 2 more episodes left…Wah!!!

Yes this episode had a greatly needed tone of horror that has been missing in at least half the episodes. It was indeed a creepy episode.

For a while now I haven’t been able to decide which is better, Coven or Freak Show?
At this point I am going to say Freak Show is better. Though Coven was extremely entertaining on a superficial level, I think with the writing, the characters are fleshed out deeper here. Especially Elsa, she is a completely developed character.

Which do y’all think is better?
Right now for me in order by season from best to worst is 1, 2, 4, 3. Sometimes I chang my mind to 2, 1, 4, 3 because Asylum was scariest overall.

I skipped 2 after seeing 1 or 2 eps. My order: 4, 3, 1. Some how 1 got tedious to me. I just find the freak show characters and concept most interesting and realistic. I am big on realism in all entertainment. Probably a character flaw that I need to feel some kind of association with the story.

what I enjoy about season 4 is that the characters are more developed. But there the gaps in logic continue to frustrate me, and the overall pace too. My lineup would be 2,3,4,1.

Jamie Brewer really nailed the creepy doll coming to life. So is she a real person in his Chester’s life that is now dead? He only hallucinates about her now? Now that I think about it I am really confused about Marjorie. Someone who is not stoned on cough medicine please explain a perspective to me. TY

in Chesters damaged mind Marjorie is very real, the rest of the world only sees the doll. i am curious how Desiree and Esmerelda got Ma Petit in her jar away from the museum. was Penny shown at all this episode?
we saw everyone else. with Dell dead who will feed
    Jimmy? the hospital staff
wont. in the ’50s did they have adult diapers? Jimmy needs help there too now. or left to lay in filth? two more episodes and a long wait for us.

But did she exist at one time? In his past and then die? I’m sure there will be more Marjory & her Chucky Doll killing ways.

Did Chester kills his wife & her lover???? A doll can’t do it. I dunno I am so confused at the moment about this story line. Also I think there maybe something to the metal plate in his head that Chester keeps talking about. It must affect his brain & sense of reality. I watched the show in a mental haze last night but I will watch again since I didn’t catch all the nuances & details because I didn’t recap it.

I’m sure Desiree & Maggie just stole the jar with Ma Petite. I can’t imagine those 2 ladies do anything by the book.

I suspect that Jimmy won’t need diapers. I think Massimo might craft him some functional prosthetics.

I don’t know how Dell or Amazon Eve would expect Jimmy to live happily ever after at the Freak Show when the police are looking for him especially since there are two dead cops.

AHS..the one you are recapping..lol I was referring to the last episode about Pepper..it broke my heart so I quit watching the show. The writers made me cry! I don’t watch shows after that. It’s not fun anymore. SOA is sons of anarchy and the walking dead is..the walking dead. 3 different shows lost my viewership.

I thought the same thing UF! As soon as the twins decided to stick together, literally, it seems the first thing on their “to do” list was to lose their virginity. When they were auditioning prospective lovers I died. The little frenchman with his tongue! Mon dieu! Interesting how Chester couldn’t bang his wife and could only watch her with her lesbian lover but dove right in between the twins. Loved the shot of him mounting them with his head laying between each of theirs. I don’t know what I think about Marjorie yet and the metal plate in Chester’s head. I finally got to watch this episode last night and I’m going to rewatch it today. I did feel a little sad that Dell had to die just as he was showing some humanity to his son. I would have liked for those two to have bought the freak show #stilldontcarethatmapetiteisdead

I just finished of this season on dvr and I’m disappointed. There was a huge lack of coherence. It was still ok, but not what it could have been, much better. The actors were great in their performance, but the story was all kinds of over the place. Anyway, I came for your recap which is always phenomenal. Thank you.

Yes it was a mixed bag of good/bad. I think a lot of the bad is that the show was still being written & filmed as it aired. I believe a lot more was filmed, but ended up on not used. I have seen pictures of scenes from AHSFreakShow that never aired, as well as some scenes that were in the trailers that never aired either.

And I know for sure that the Chester storyline was added & written as an afterthought when Neil Patrick Harris signed on for his guest appearance which was a useless storyline other than to be the one that killed Maggie. Heck anyone could have killed Maggie in less time than the 2 episodes that led Chester up to it.

I still think that FreakShow had more horror than Coven, so I rank it better than Coven on that merit alone even though Coven was very entertaining.
