American Horror Story: Freak Show Episode 10 “Orphans” (Precap)

AHS Freak pepper

By: Urethra Franklin

Tonight’s Freak Show is what fans have been eagerly waiting for, an episode with extra Pepper!  It is the midseason finale before the holiday break that will connect Season 4 with Season 2 of the series. Besides the return of fan favorite Pepper (Naomi Grossman), Sister Mary Eunice also returns to AHS with the fabulous Lily Rabe reprising the character by visiting the Freak Show. #Halleloo

Here is some back story for those of you Freaktards unfamiliar with Sister Mary & Pepper. Sister Mary was a nun working at the Briarcliff Asylum, an institution for the criminally insane. Pepper was also introduced during Season 2 as a Briarcliff patient born with microcephaly, a rare neurological condition that causes a person’s head to be smaller than normal for their age. #PinHead

Pepper wasn’t institutionalized because of her microcephaly. She was locked up because she was wrongly accused & convicted of drowning her sister’s baby and cutting off its ears.  After an encounter with extraterrestrials, Pepper developed intellectual improvements and revealed that her sister’s husband killed the baby & explained, “That’s what happens to freaks. We get blamed for everything.”  This also has been thematic in ‘Freak Show.’AHS Freak pepper 2

Asylum was set in the 1960’s, and Freak Show takes place in the 1950’s. So what we see with Pepper in Freak Show happened prior to her being locked up in Asylum.  Details involving Sister Mary’s visit to the Freak Show have been kept a secret even though the script for this episode was stolen from the set leading to an FBI investigation.  Tonight’s episode will explain why Pepper left the Freak Show with Sister Mary to end up at the Asylum.  #The411

The official synopsis for episode 10  titled “Orphans” is: The death of a Freak sparks troubling behavior in Pepper. Elsa reveals the history of the Freak Show. Desiree grows suspicious of Maggie.

Which freak dies? In the promo trailer Pepper can be seen screaming over Salty, her husband. Up until this point, their relationship hasn’t been explained on the show, but Naomi Grossman has said in interviews that Salty is Pepper’s husband.  Salty did not have a huge role except for being scene filler & looking adorable; but I hope we learn more their relationship to better understand Pepper.  Oooh baby baby. Push it real good! Sorry I can’t get that song out of my head. #SaltNPepa

Watch tonight on FX at 10 ET, and this episode is supersized at 77 minutes long so set extra time on your dvr. This will be an important episode in terms of story development.  AHS:FreakShow will return after the holidays on January 7. #Christmahanakwanzika

I’m living the real American Horror Story with family visiting from out of town for Christmas, so I can’t promise a recap this week, but I will try to do it later because I.LOVE.PEPPER.  So go ahead and share all your thoughts about tonight’s episode & anything AHS below.

Happy Holidays to all of you Freaktards & the HFIC, Tamara. I appreciate y’all for reading my long ass recaps & the great discussions.

i had wondered about the relationship between salty and pepper. if pepper goes to briarcliff this episode we will get to learn who her sister is and a BABY must die. that sucks. as for your family just give them an AHS marathon, that should keep them busy! thanks again for doing this for us UF and have a great christmahanakwanzika!!! (i had to scroll back 3 times to spell that) 🙂

Well Ryan Murphy has rewritten AHS history to say that all the season are connected because he is RyanFuckingMurphy. I’m not really convinced that was the writers intention the 1st 3 seasons. But because he’s RFM….

But in tonight’s episode WE WILL SPECIFICALLY SEE THE CONNECTION with the appearance Sister Mary from season 2 coming to the Freak Show for Pepper, also from season 2.

This season of AHS isn’t as enjoyable as season one for me (only two I’ve seen so far). After Twisty left I just started to get a little bored with the ‘freak show’ subject matter. I’m probably the only one, but I hope that when the show comes back I’m reinvigorated.

I’ve watched all season’s and I might say season 1 was my favorite, but I like how they keep changing the theme while keeping most of the actors. Jessica Lange is f….ng FANTASTIC! As I’ve said before I keep thinking I’m watching a really good movie when watching her scenes. Also love Sarah Paulson,so beautiful and talented. Many people didn’t like season 2, but you have to watch at least 3 episodes and then it all comes into place. Because it came at you full force and was difficult for some to pick up/understand. I work in the therapy field and what they did to Sarah’s character, shock treatment, watching movies of girls and throwing up, was brought up to one of my male gay patients whose mother wanted him to do the same thing! Suggesting shock therapy because your son like’s men. Barbaric. It’s sad Asylums were really like that. Scary, Horror Story!

Asylum was the best in my opinion. When Jessica Lange was locked up and sitting in the window sill…..OMG !! She was going mad and if you didn’t know better you would think that this poor woman has absolutely lost her damn mind. The acting was superb . It was very real and so raw. God !! I was so impressed….and hooked. She played the role of someone we hated…and in the end we were pulling for her. That is the gift of a true talented actor.

season 1 was the most complete storyline, we got the season as originally intended, i believe. season 2 left loose ends with the aliens and monsters outside the asylum. season 3 RFM read social media and over the winter break rewrote the story to try and give what people were talking about. so far this season is ok but we have more episodes to see where thinfs go. that said ive enjoyed ALL of them for different reasons

I agree completely, I just looked Naomi up on IMDB. Someone had to have some serious imagination to look at her and see that it would be possible to make her look like she has microcephaly, she’s pretty “typical” looking. I love how everyone on this site seems to embrace the “freaks” and find them beautiful, cute, or otherwise appealing. I read some comments on a FB picture of Ma Petite that made me want to cry – the majority of them were hideous even with real names attached! People can be so cruel, it’s interesting to me that we don’t have that kind of thing on this site even with the anonymity.

Lucas was Pepper’s baby!!! There was a reason Pepper started walking around naked after she had to sleep in the husband’s office. He wanted some microcephalic lovin’! Her sister, who couldn’t have children, thought she could force herself to love the child enough to play mommy but just couldn’t #elephantears #stelmosfire
Remember what a calm and efficent midwife Pepper becomes in “Asylum”? That’s why! #ahamoment
A few, final thoughts (yes UF, I am nice and blazed):
    1. Elsa on the cover of Life dated 1958, or 6 years later, shows us that the crazy bitch does become a tv star. Holy hell!
    2. I think Pepper finally found happiness and stability at the asylum. She was happiest there, kind of the head (teehee) bitch in charge. Remember The Name Game? Pure joy on her face! #rats
    3. Naomi Grossman is more than just a novelty act. What a great job she did!
    4. Neil Patrick Harris is an actual magician so his demented magician character is perfecto for him. Please let there be a little something between he and Dandy! #faghag
Okay UF. I’ve intruded on your territory enough. Why do I feel like you and I would have a great time watching this show together? #tripletits ♥️

Tulsa I think you’re about to start a great debate here about the parentage of Baby Lucas. For a second during the show I also thought that Pepper was the mother, but I really do think her sister, Rita Gayhart, was the mother. I also thought for a second that the husband was having sex with Pepper, but everything seemed so vague and not well established visually to a dummy like me.

Though the story would have had even MORE emotional impact if it had been Pepper’s baby, I do see the ambiguity about the baby.. and I can be swayed to think it’s Peppers if someone can tell me why.

The sister shares genes with Pepper, so it is possible that she can have a “mongoloid” baby. Mongoloid was a crude term for Down’s Syndrome, and Rita was 50 years old, which is the age for high risk of birthing a baby with birth defects.

Hannah I can understand how there is ambiguity about the Baby Lucas’ parentage, but I really do think it was her sister Rita’s baby. It’s the most emotional AHS episosde I’ve ever seen. That’s why I thought AHS:Asylum was so scary. That place… the abandonment, the injustice, the inability to be heard, the suffering, in such a dark & dank place like an Asylum is too much for even me.

UF, I agree with you now on Lucas’ parentage after watching the episode. I have not seen Asylum and after hearing some comments about space alien abductions I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the season. Now it’s a must. Did Mare tell Sister Mary Eunice exactly what “deformity” the baby had? If she did, I just missed it. I can’t imagine anything that could cause both a mother and father to despise their child enough to kill it and blame the only pure soul who unconditionally loved him and took care of him. What Sister Mary Eunice mistook for remorse for killing the baby was sheer heartbreak and agony at losing another person that Pepper loved. I loved Pepper already and watching this episode made my dried up tear ducts produce tears again just like UF. I was a little surprised that Maggie decided to show Desiree the museum where Stanley had been taking all the freaks that he had been killing after their earlier conversation. Desiree had already threatened to kill her if she was involved. Will Desiree believe that Maggie wasn’t involved now knowing she has been Stanley’s partner all this time? Maybe the saving grace was when she passed out when she saw the lobster claws in the jar. I’m probably the only one who is glad that the show is on break until January 7th. I’ve seen enough injustice for the last few weeks to last me a lifetime. I don’t want to give up on AHS so a break will be good for me.

I agree that the baby was definetly the aoster’s baby. Because in Asylum when the aliens give her brain power, she clearly states she was framed for killing her sister’s baby although it was really the husband who killed baby Lucas. I think had it been her baby she would have expressed that!

That is a very good point Tamara. I had forgotten about Pepper explaining that she had been framed for killing her sister’s baby and that it was actually her brother-in-law who did the deed. I got way hyped up watching last night’s episode and, being an English major, I’m guilty of reading too much into things and always looking for symbolism and what not.
I’m so happy to have found this blog and the community of freaktards that dwell here. I’ve never really posted on other blogs and when I found TT and UF’s AHS precaps and recaps I just jumped right in!

      Because it was heartbreaking?

I think this ONE episode did some justice to the title “American Horror Story.” Though it was not blood, gore, & fright, it was truly horror on a deep dark psychological level. There was so much gut wrenching inhumanity. This episode is going to stay with me a long time.

Are we going to ignore the fact that Elsa Mars looks exactly like Sister Jude. Pepper LOVED Elsa, and after seeing her on the cover of LIFE magazine she certainly would notice that she looks like Sister Jude. And if so knowing how clingy Pepper is, wouldn’t she have been enamored with Sister Jude?

I wonder if this is the last time we are going to see Pepper on Freak Show. Will Elsa go to the Asylum to visit Pepper?

Elsa told Ethel she had a sister that died before she was born, and never met her. Is RyanFuckingMurphy going to rewrite AHS History and link Elsa with Sister Jude? In a way I love the crossover between Asylum & Freak Show, but then again somethings mean something on AHS and something just don’t mean shit.

MIND BLOWN! I had forgotten about Elsa saying she had a dead sister!! Maybe, just maybe, Elsa will go to visit Pepper and discover her doppleganger sister there! I mean, there are some strong similarities between Elsa and Sister Jude: both love to get their drink on, both are obsessed with having power and only achieve it by ruling the freaks and the mentally deranged, both have a thing for slutty lingerie… Maybe aliens are what will tie both seasons together (I’m reaching; I know).

There really is Briarcliff Asylum in Massachusetts. Wasn’t Sister Jude from Boston? In last night’s show we learned that Elsa went to Boston to join the circus. Hmmmm….

I did think about that when she saw the pic of Elsa on the cover…”isn’t her mind going to be blown when she meets Sister Jude…?” But then I thought that’s a natural consequence of Murphy’s strategy of recasting the same actors. Also, was anyone else surprised that we DIDN’T see at the end that Stanley didn’t actually poison or smother Salty? That would have made Pepper’s tragedy even sadder but certainly wouldn’t have been unexpected.

My dad used to own a grocery store in the south, and when I was a kid the old people used to buy Dr. Pepper in the glass bottles with the slim neck and drop peanuts into the bottle, and then drink the soda with peanuts.

I had a phase when I drank it like that a lot, but it has been years since I did that. After seeing that Indian dignitary go bat shit crazy over Dr Pepper & trading Ma Petite for 3 cases, I’m gonna drink a Dr. Pepper with some peanuts inside of it today.

Seeing Ma Petite get traded off for Dr. Pepper was one of the few times I laughed while watching this episode (another time being when Desiree told Pepper to “now clean this shit up!” after she trashed her trailer).

Though Elsa thought she was doing a Pepper a favor by reuniting her with her sister, it was based on purely selfish reasons because Elsa was going to Hollywood.

Why couldn’t Pepper stay behind at the Freak Show with the other freaks after Elsa left? A new owner would be on the horizon (Neil Patrick Harris), and the new owner would keep her as part of his inventory of freaks.

UF, I’m not sure if I’m completely on board with the idea that Elsa’s decision for Pepper was purely selfish. You are right, Elsa is definitely the most selfish character but I think she really loved Pepper. She didn’t come up with the idea of returning her to her sister. I can’t remember at the moment who brought it up to Elsa during her backstory on Pepper. They were discussing that Pepper had lost so many people in her life and that she just wanted to be loved. Elsa agreed and that seemed to be where the idea came from to return her to her sister. She didn’t seem to care what happened to the rest of the freaks and I know that they were all higher functioning than Pepper but she could have been left in the care of the other freaks. I’m probably totally off base on this one. Does my theory make any sense to anyone besides me? I know it’s a crazy idea that Elsa could possibly take anyone else into consideration other than her own needs.

hannah, desire after meeting theo was riding the wave of great american housewife with a white picket fence happiness, told elsa since salty and ma petit died, pepper should be with family. it didnt matter to her that her sister left her in an orphanage since pepper could function better now and elsa grabbed onto that idea for her own desires. but i think it broke her heart when she was leaving. this was the best show of this season

Steve I agree that this was probably the best show of the season. It was greatly written & directed and produced so much emotion out most anyone who watched it.

Somewhere above I said this ONE episode rightfully belongs to a show titled “American Horror Story” because it was a horror against humanity. It was way more real & horrific than any storyline with campy blood & gore.

Of course I recommended anybody to watch all the seasons, but really each season does stand on its own as Ryan Murphy insisted when Season 2 started.

But then RyanFuckingMurphy decided to break his own rules & rewrite history by saying the different seasons are connected. Though it was done brilliantly with Pepper’s character, I don’t think the writers can recreate something special like that again with other characters or story lines.

The only good thing to come out of RFM’s gimmick of connecting the seasons (in a minor or major way) is that it will get people to go back and watch the entire series. #Marketing

I missed this episode (I can’t believe I forgot about it) and had to watch it OnDemand, so that’s why I’m coming in late to comment. Thanks again Urethra for the pre-cap.
I was becoming disinterested after the Dandy-heavy episode and then this episodes airs, and just sticks the knife in and twists harder than Dandy ever could. This is what RFM (smile) is good at, showing how the real monsters and freaks look normal on the outside. This is the real horror, the everyday unkindness and injustices, not the Dandy rich boy gone bad gore.
I think Elsa did care for Pepper, but when she left her with her booze guzzling sister you can see again that Elsa always comes first. And when we see the sister (Mare Winningham was fantastic) lying while the real events are shown in flashbacks, you see the true monster.
Naomi Grossman, she was wonderful. She expressed so much with her eyes and a couple words.

Halloween for that year is on Friday October 31,1958. RyanFuckingMurphy has already said we will see Mordrake one more time this season. I wonder if Mordrake will appear on this night and take Elsa’s soul on national TV….. That would be so fucking cool.
