Will you guys be watching the Whitney Houston movie on Lifetime? It’s Angela Bassett’s directorial debut. I will most definitely be watching. After the Aaliyah movie that everyone but me HATED, I’m not sure how this will be received. When the family refuses to allow the artist’s music to be used that is not usually a good sign. I was unfamiliar with Aaliyah, well I mean I knew of her music but I was not a devoted fan privy to all the details so I as able to just watch it unaware of all the liberties taken.
However, as someone who knew every detail about the Jodi Arias story, I found that movie to be maddening. They just changed so much stuff. With Whitney, I knew more about her life than Aaliyah for sure so I don’t know if I will be able to just watch it like a regular Lifetime movie.
What do y’all think?
I’ll give it a shot. Didn’t realize it was going to be on, will it be soon?
Has the family endorsed it? It will be interesting to see if it’s the sanitized version that I’m sure the older ones would prefer.
No the family is livid. They wanted a major motion picture production. And Bobbi Kris wanted to play her mother.

Bobby Kris could play her father. She really favors him.
How absurd to think it could be a major picture. Just as absurd to think BK should play her gorgeous mother. Seriously, there was the Liberace flick…other than that I can’t think of another type movie like that that isn’t a documentary. A doc might’ve worked if they used old family video never seen before.
Bobbi Kris play her mother ?! Come on .
@barbinga: It’s not at all absurd to imagine a feature film about her life. Musician/singer stories are typically the most popular and well done type of bio-pics, and there have been many, not just the Liberace one (which was actually made-for-TV also). Just a few that come to mind are:
Selena
Lady Sings the Blues
Coal Miner’s Daughter
Sweet Dreams
Walk the Line
LaBamba
La Vie en Rose
Ray
And who can forget What’s Love Got to Do With It, starring Miss Angela Bassett herself?
I’m surprised the family would want a movie made of her story at all though, even if it is a feature film. All the stories that have come out about Whitney since her death would make for a less-than-flattering portrait, if the film is truthful at all. Because of this, and because the plot of, “young talent is discovered, rises to the top, then loses everything to drug addiction” is pretty well-worn territory, the writing/directing of such a film would have to be SUPERB to make it work well and I think the chance of that happening is next to nil.
What IS absurd is the notion of Bobbi Kristina playing the part. In a Major Motion Picture. A. She looks nothing like her mother, B. Can she even act? Whitney on her best day was no actress. (The Bodyguard? Pew!) A movie studio would be gambling tens of millions of dollars on BK, and if she thinks that’s going to happen, I’d wonder what she is smoking!
As for the Lifetime version, I wish Angela Bassett well but I won’t be watching. It being Lifetime, it means low-budge and exploitative. That’s just what they do.
There is an Aaliyah movie? I’m going to have to watch that. I loved her in Queen of the Damned.
Yes! And i loved it, although most people didn’t. Then VHI has been showing their “Behind the Music” of Aaliya as well. Makes me very sad when I realize she was only 22 and was a precious, good person.
Wasn’t the plane overloaded or something? It’s a shame.
I never heard about it being overloaded or anything, but the pilot was unlicensed and had traces of cocaine and I believe alcohol in his system. For sure on the coke though.
Lifetime movie? I’m watching. OT – I’m really looking forward to the Red Tent movie.
I’d like to see red tent too but I think my sunday is already over booked.

I adored Whitney Houston . . . attended two of her concerts. One in S.F. and another in Sacramento at the Arco Arena. It was so painful to watch her life and career fall apart. I think I’ll pass on the theatrical dissection of her sweet soul.
Cyndy,
I did too. I was listing to her rendition of Little Drummer Boy yesterday, and it broke my heart. My God, was she talented, truly one of the greatest of all time! Such a shame…. Rest in Peace Whitney….
Now that I digressed…. Yes T, I will watch. Because of her star magnitude, I think a major motion picture was warranted as well.
I’ll watch it. I DVR’d the Aaliyah movie, but then when it got all that bad press on social media, I was like…..maybe not. It’s still sitting there. I don’t know. That movie seemed to go through a lot of production issues.
This movie OTOH has been very consistent with production. The family just wants her biopic to be something more of a Selena and have it released in theatres and on the big screen. I don’t think that that’s necessary. I hope it does well. I’ll be watching, especially since it’s Angela Basset’s directorial debut. It’ll also show if what’s-her-name from Top Model can act in a leading role.
Angela Bassett was amazing as Tina Turner, I can not imagine her doing a sloppy job on this movie. I think Whitney’s family is batshit crazy. Bobbi Christina as Whitney….now I know they are a mess. What’s Love Got to do With It should have won her an Academy Award. I will watch, who is starring in it?
Yaya DaCosta from ANTM.
Thanks, If AB gives her approval I think it will be good. She is amazing, great actress, beautiful, stable family, Yale grad. I think people forget how incredible she is, because she never makes gossip columns.I am glad AHS has shown a spotlight on her. My son was singing at Epcot for Christmas and she was reading Christmas stories. She is as nice as she is beautiful. I just do not like Disney with the exception of Epcot at Christmas. We had to go to a wedding in Orlando and my small children asked to go to Disney. We took them to FL Mall and told them it was Disney, they were thrilled. We still laugh about it. Am I a bad mom?
I LOVE Epcot. When I lived in Florida residents could go cheap and I would drive down from Tallahassee and got to eat at the Morrocan restaurant and fondle the Mikimotos. What? pearls need contact with the skin to keep their sheen! 🙂

Just not interested. I will stick with the body guard.
Loved the Aaliyah movie, and can’t wait for this one! Angela Bassett isn’t going to want to look the fool so I pray it will be on point
Tamara – I like the Aaliyah movie as well. I had forgotten she was only 22 when she died. So sad and she was a very NICE person. Not always the case with a young star. So……..are you going to come and have a slumber party with me and we will go see Apollo in Lexington and if Teresa ends up in West Virginia we can kill 2 birds with one stone!! Thoughts?
I liked the Aaliyah movie ok as well I wished it would have went into more detail about the r Kelly relationship and had more of her music in it but I know the family wouldn’t release the rights to it but it was nice to watch with my daughters and let them see a popstar that did not turn into a hobag because of her fame. The Whitney movie should be great but I wished they had put someone like Jennifer Hudson in the lead that could sing as well. Yaya did a pretty good job in the butler but it was a smaller role. Either way the Whitney is an icon and I’m in.
I will not watch. Yaya cannot act plus looks old and tired as a young Whitney Houston.
Really? I know Yaya is in her 30’s but I don’t think she looks a day over 25
Yes….I’ll watch. As for the Jodi Arias movie you mentioned, was that not the biggest joke you’ve ever seen on the small screen? This will be better, no doubt. Angela Bassett DID deserve to win for What’s Love Got to Do With It? I’m sure she will do this with all she’s got. She’s that kind of professional. Tina Turner is one I respect and admire so I was very pleased with the job she did. Have complete faith in her abilities.
I don’t think we get lifetime in Canada, but I would watch if I could. So…I remember lots of rumours about Whitney also being in a long term lesbian relationship during her marriage. I always doubt the reality of these biopics, like, the true full story, warts and all, but this one will have a lot of the behind the scenes, fights, drugs, sex and music. Right up my alley.
I also enjoyed the Aalyiah move. It was your ‘typical’ Lifetime movie. I think it was the Wendy Williams haters who slammed it since she picked up the production of the project when the others bowed out. The Whitney biopic should also be along those same lines, in my opinion. Yes, I’ll be watching it at some point.
I love you and will watch whatever you ask me to watch <3
P.S. especially if it's on Lifetime
lol. It’s not a required assignment (this time 🙂 ) Just curious as I was shocked by all the Aaliyah backlash on twitter.
Will watch, have to, LOVED NIPPY! And I’m also fond of YaYa, yet… okay, do you recall Andy speaking of Whitney, how when he met her it was like a ray of sunshine [paraphrased] shooting down from above right through her? She exclaimed “Oh my goodness, she IS a star!” We’re hoping YaYa can embody that shine as Houston. We doubt if Bassett would hire just anyone, she gotta be certain they can deliver! Already don’t like who they cast as Bobby, back then, Bobby had WAY MORE cool, what some today call “swag” than this shown actor has given. We’ll see, will fully critique then.
The Aaliyah movie: Most folks feel it was rushed, didn’t read as authentic as most would have wanted. Like someone above wrote/predicted that this Whitney movie may be “sanitized,” some feel that that Aaliyah movie was gentrified, that most of the cast in no way favored whom they were portraying by looks or persona. Hence, the dissatisfaction. We feel that both should have been 1st seen on the Silver Screen, then found its way to the smaller one: TV. Especially Whitney, she was a mega star! Globally Known.
I can see Whitney at the movies she was a megastar of her time not so much Aaliyah she had a great voice and an interesting story for TV but I don’t think she is well known enough for the big screen her career ended so quickly with her young death that her music didn’t have that crossover past the r&b music fans and the young audience she appealed to
*He. Pardon that Andy. Just now saw that typing slip. Reference that share you shared regarding “Being Bobby Brown,” the first time you say you met Whitney Houston. That was aura you were referring to, as I’m sure you know.
I really thought the Aaliyah movie was ok too. I had never bought any of her music but I do know her music. I could not understand the fuss that came Wendy’s way. It is like it was a personal attack on her. And the people who were doing the talking had not even seen the movie. If they wanted to make a movie (which we all know they probably could not get the funding) they should have and it is not to late. You can never depict a person whole life in approx. 2 hours. It allowed a lot people who did not know Aaliyah to have a glimpse into her short life. There is more positive talk about Angela’s movie. But, as long as they have an audience they can ride it to the bank. I will be watching.
I love her music. She was a bit younger than I, but living in the same era and watching her star rise was wonderful. The later years were so sad I don’t want to see it again, on any screen, large or small. I say let her rest in peace.
