How To Get Away With Murder: This Is (Not) Freakin’ Whack-a-Mole

HTGAWM Viola Statue

The title of this week’s HTGAWM, Freakin’ Whack-A-Mole doesn’t seem to fit the pace to me. Sure, Connor said it when they crew rolled up on Asher while heading off to dump the body, but this episode was a lot slower than most. For awhile there, it was more like Paper Chase, just a show about law school.  No one new died this week. No one even got laid until the very last scene and we did not see any of that action. It just rolled merrily along until the last four minutes. Here is what we learned this week.  I’m a bit distracted so please fill me in on anything I missed in comments.

Things We Learned in Class This Week: Habeas Corpus (Produce the body) Annalise calls the interns The Keating Five.

Things We Learned From The Procedural Case This Week:  This week’s case is a death penalty appeal. Because all first year law students work on those.  Is David, the defendant, related to Annalise?  The original death penalty case was presided over by Asher’s dad. This explains his place on The Keating Five.  Judge Millstone kept a daily journal every day except the day he met with the ADA in the death penalty case. Asher confronts his father asking him if the ADA gave him the heads up that someone had committed perjury. Judge Millstone got a federal judicial appointment shortly after that.  Annalise is really good in the courtroom and is not afraid of a Senator. Is this the end of Asher’s usefulness to The Keating Five? What does Annalise do with disposable interns?

Things We Learned  About Bonnie This Week:  She told Sam everything she is doing is for Annalise. She’d do anything for her. Am I the only one that flops back and forth between Bonnie being gay or straight? I know bisexual is a choice, but I’d really prefer an either or answer in this case to determine where her true allegiance lies. Bonnie is always lurking everywhere. And the last place we see her on this episode is THE LAST PLACE I expected to see her. HTGAWM anna frank

Things We Learned About Frank This Week: He and Laurel have kissed. She seems disinterested in him. She finally straight out tells Frank she is not into him and to back off. Bonnie was lurking. Frank is who Annalise trusts to do her dirty work.

Things We Learned  About Annalise and Wes This Week: Annalise doesn’t like white whores. This fact seems like it will become more escalated next week when Annalise prepares Rebecca for trial. Wes appears to have Annalise backed into a corner. Is she really? Or is she just playing along? Why did she drag Wes back into class? Was it to keep her eye on him?  She does call him “the puppy” so I doubt she is worried about him blackmailing her. I imagine she could take him out, right? Annalise cries a lot in general, though, doesn’t she?

Annalise has Frank plant the cellphone on Griffin after making some adjustments to keep Sam out of it. She finds Rebecca and sends Wes to her. Wes asks, “What about your husband?”  Annalise says, “That’s my concern not yours. Whatever it takes, isn’t that what you said?”

With regard to Wes and Rebecca,  Wes seems to be losing his integrity which makes Rebecca seem more upstanding. Rebecca falls for Wes because no one has ever believed in her the way he does. He’s basically pinning a murder rap on someone else to protect her. How sexy is that?

Annalise lets Sam sweat a bit after seeing a newscast about Lila’s phone being found on Griffin before letting him know she adjusted things, including having new wallpaper hung, to keep him out of it. She did however leave his untraceable penis pictures on the phone. Sam wonders why she is doing this as we are treated to Annalise’s nightly routine again. Annalise says she needs Sam and she loves him and cries again. But before she could yank off her wig and have makeup sex, Wes and Rebecca show up at the door. Do Sam and Annalise ever have any privacy? What is up with all the crying? Is Annalise menopausal? #projection

Oh Shit! Nate is outside the house on stakeout. He is sent some digital photos that show Frank planting the phone on Griffin!

Things We Learned in Flash Forwards This Week: Doucheface Asher likes to be a private dancer and make it rain alone in the privacy of his own apartment. Rebecca wanted them to let Asher into the office with the dead body so he would step in the blood. The Keating Four almost run over Asher when driving with the body. I didn’t see Rebecca in the SUV with the body.

BONNIE SLEPT WITH DOUCHEFACE! And Annalise calls her to ask her if she is with Sam. Is Annalise setting up an alibi? Or is Bonnie?

omg. Thanks! I read all that and can’t believe I watched same show. No idea who griffin is– I missed the final 15 min.

I stand by this- Bonnie is a vampire- or wannabe.

Griffin was Lila’s boyfriend the rugby? football? player that was over at Rebecca’s apartment. He was arrested for her murder first and pinned it on Rebecca. So I guess turnabout is fair play. Rebecca was incredulous that Wes would be okay with Annalise planting evidence on someone else on her behalf.

YESSSS!! I thoroughly enjoyed this episode because the story was told in a clearer more straight forward manner. It left me with more interest in and questions about the characters and their roles/motivations within the story. Now we know how Asher got into the Keating 5 and his connections to Bonnie probably helped him as well. I never expected Bonnie and Asher to be in the bed together, and Annalise to call Bonnie looking for Sam. (WTF?!) I am now miffed about Bonnie’s sexuality and what are her intentions regarding Sam and Annalise. I thought she was in love with Sam and idolized Annalise, but this episode put the breaks on all of that. For me, everything about her is just a big question mark. I do not know who Griffin is, but it seems like his death is going to expose Annalise’s unethical practices. I was not crazy about Annalise’s outburst in court. I know of no state Supreme Court that would allow such behavior without sanctioning her. I believe the person Annalise represented was a former lover, and his conviction had some influence on her choice to practice criminal law. Although the story telling and procedural matters in this show are problematic, I am willing to give it a chance to improve the writing, character development, and case presentation. Let’s see how the next episode goes.

The dude she represented is old enough to be her father. She was not in college when he was convicted 21 years ago. I thought her comment after they won telling him, “Go be with your family.” was a deliberate clue.

Only two more episodes and then we will be caught up to real time.

Thank you for clearing up people’s assumptions. Hey fans, pay attention, you are reading more into these episodes then presented. Bonnie had a sexual encounter with Sam/Annalise forgave them and now Bonnie has sworn allegiance to Annalise. Wes is hung up on Rebecca with his innocent act, he thinks he could love her especially after believing that Sam killed Lila. Annalise knows that Rebecca is hiding some truths and she is protecting Sam from the scandal and the fact that his father is a Judge and Sam knows the law on a psychoanalytical standpoint. She loves Sam even though she was willing to have an affair with the cop to use him when she needed him. Annalise was NOT family to her death row client but knew his case and conviction was unjustifiable and crooked by the ADA and Archer’s dad!!!!! Bonnie is not gay!! The cop is mad at Annalise and is following everyone in their setup to get the scoop on them. I really don’t believe he lost his job. I think he is still a cop and trying to get the BIG arrest and especially on Sam. But who really killed Sam with the trophy? Who took the trophy from Archer? Can’t wait for the final two episodes. Hint: I think Rebecca killed Lila and used Wes and maybe killed Sam? I don’t think the 1st year students are getting rid of the body to protect Annalise, do you??????

Annalise said “21 years ago when I was a law student, not unlike all of you there was a local man named David…”

So Annalise was a law student 21 years ago. Making her approximately 45. The average age of an American law student is around 23-25 so I went with 24. I also posted math below on how Wes could be her university baby. I’m bad at math so please don’t crucify me if I made an obvious error, plus I’m hungover. 😀

I’m in the same boat with you. I guess she could be old enough to have Wes for a son. How old is she supposedly portraying ? Perhaps 46-47 ?
Tamara do you have any insight on wether they may be mother and son and also how old do you think Annalise is ? Thanks in advance for your help and your update. I’m so glad I found your website. It’s awesome !

Annalise said she was a law student 21 years ago. I presume that Wes is approximately 24. I think the average age of American university law students is around 24 (here in Australia it is much younger). So theoretically Annalise would have been around 21ish when she had Wes. If my math is correct: Wes is 24, 21 years ago Annalise was 24, so 24 years ago Annalise was 21 when Wes was born, in college and probably gave Wes up to pursue her career.

So with all this math potentially Sam could be the father of Wes. It depends when they had their affair.

AH, The baby is Sam’s. Imagine the twist when Wes finds out he was a part of murdering his own father. Annalise got pregnant in college with Sam and he was already married. He told her to put the baby up and go for her career. Annalise and Sam are Wes’s parents. Annalise tracked him down. Frank probably knows and helped her find him. This explains why Annalise showed up and dragged him back to class.

After this all comes out, Wes will fall apart in the aftermath. It’s all coming together.

So what about Nate? Is he really against Annalise or just really mad at her?

Right now I suspect Nate wants to get his job back (wasn’t her fired or demoted?), he suspects Sam as the murderer and is investigating him on the side with some help from mates. He knows Frank planted the phone. He probably suspects that Annalise did it to save not just her client but maybe her husband, I believe that on the night of Sam’s murder Nate will be confronting Annalise about the planted phone so she runs home to find Sam, he is gone, she rings Bonnie to see if they are together, she says “something terrible has happened”, I believe she is referring to Nate knowing that the phone was a plant and is going to take his evidence about it all to his superiors.

It makes sense as on the night of the murder of Sam we know where all key players are except for Annalise and Nate. Frank is home ringing/obsessing over Laurel, Bonnie is with Asher, the other students are with Sam’s body. We dont know what Nate and Annalise are doing so I suspect they are having a confrontation and we will see that scene later on.

I don’t think Annalise would freak out that bad over the phone thing. She would freak out to see a ransacked office, missing rug, possible blood stains or sign of a cleanup…

I really enjoyed this episode! I almost gave up last week but this episode actually told a whole story and had less back and forth moments. I also developed deeper relationships with the characters….

Bonnie is confusing as hell. Asher is likeable because I like him in OITNB. Wes seems sneaky as hell and dumb. Laura is annoying…Frank is FINE.
Nate really has it in for Annalise and Sam…..Annalise did ruin his life a bit..and he has a dying wife…I’m sure he is gunning for them!

I still think Annalise killed Sam….I agree that she may be creating an alibi…you know she can cry at the drop of a dime!

    Until next week!!

Finally finished the episode. So late to the party. This was a good elisode for me as so far Asher has been merely an annoyance to me. Now I like and understand him more. The ending was interesting. I suspect that Annalise does not know Sam is dead, so what is the horrible thing that she rings Bonnie about?

Good question. Which reminds me that Sam and Annalise’s office building (with the one upstairs bathroom (? the only place I’ve ever seen the only bathroom upstairs is in Parisian restaurants and bars. What’s up with that btw. Here in good ole Merica we have plumbing on all floors. anyway…) So it was fairly late at night, and dark when Sam was murdered in the office.

At some point, Annalise would come home and see the rug missing and the disarray and start looking for Sam who was supposed to be home. She would call Bonnie first. That’s what I think anyway. 🙂

It’s an English thing. My parents place in England when I lived there had a bathroom upstairs and nothing downstairs. I believe to keep it away from eating areas and closest to bathrooms for old people with midnight bladders.

I suspect that maybe Annalise is calling Bonnie about a confrontation with Nate and not because she notices the rug missing. Nate probably confronts her earlier in the night about knowing she planted the phone and that Sam killed Tank Girl. She then rushes home to tell Sam. Finds him missing, rings Bonnie looking for Sam and to tell Bonnie about Frank planting the phone and Nate knowing about it. Remember at this point Bonnie doesn’t know about Frank planting the phone so it kind of makes sense.

Oh by the way I suspect that Bonnie killed Tank Girl. She is very protective over Sam/Annalise and probably had an affair with Sam previously. She also said something to Laurel about not leading Frank on that showed to me she doesn’t like when young privileged women use/threaten/extort men. Maybe Tank Girl was going to go public about her affair and Bonnie went to stop her and an altercation occured.

It turning out that Sam killed Tank Girl for me would be disappointing. I prefer the evil Bonnie theory.

Please excuse me, I had just taken a pain pill when I replied. I MEANT to say; I think Wes put tank girl in the tank because he thought Annalese killed tank girl, when it was Wes’s dad that killed. Bonnie killed because she’s already said that she would do anything for Annalese. I think he was going to go to the cops, and confess it was his dik piks on the phone, but Annalese killed because she was pissed over the affair. Bonnie heard him talk and killed him, then got the Keating five to help her get rid of evidence…
