Amanda Bynes Arrested for DUI!

September 29, 2014 by tamaratattles 117 Comments

I am so saddened to hear this news. It was just a couple of weeks ago that a friend of mine who lives in Orange County said she was out to dinner and sat at a table where Amanda Bynes was having dinner with someone who gave off the “gay best friend” vibe.  She said Amanda looked good and seemed to be doing a lot better. It seems that her conservatorship was ended a bit too soon though because apparently yesterday she was arrested for DUI after she stopped her vehicle in the middle of an intersection.

To me, I have a feeling that it was not the result of being on drugs as the officers suspect, but more likely being off her meds now that she is responsible for taking them on her own. I really wish the best for her and hope she can get the help that she needs. They set her bail at $15,000 and this will put her at risk for the previous charges that were dropped after she received mental health counseling on the condition that she not get into any more trouble.  My heart goes out to her. 🙁

Damn it! I was so glad when I heard she was doing better.

Bipolar is the new term for manic depression. I’ve seen reports that say she is bipolar and schizophrenic. I read a lot of her writing from before and after this happened and she seem schizophrenic. She is out of touch with reality.

Her parents have stated they do not believe she is mentally ill, nor does she require a conservatorship. (As late as Monday) could her parents be a part of her Dx and not her on going treatment and/or therapy?
The initial plan of care was court ordered correct? Any case I wish her everything she needs.

This is heart breaking . Brittney spears is still under conservatorship I wonder why Amanda’s was lifted after such a short period of time . Shes so talanted I use to watch her shows on nick. No, a cop decided based on a conversation with her that she was on something. Because cops can diagnose mental health issues and drug use based on a five minute or less conversation. I’m hoping she gave a blood test. My guess is that the will not find anything.

How are you possibly blaming the cop? It’s 4 am. She’s acting crazy. She needs to be contained. Suspicion of DUI is probably the best thing he/she/cop had in his kit to deal with her. It’s WAY more dangerous for a cop to try to diagnose crazy. For the sake of her and others, she had to be dealt with. And since he or she certainly is not qualified to diagnose her psych problems, suspicion that she was under the influence of something (which is temporary ) gives her the benefit of the doubt. No everyone is well versed in the mental status of a faded Disney star.

I know TT, I too was upset when I heard this! I was so happy for Amanda when she was finally under the care & guidance she needed as well as the much needed meds they put her on.
I was very upset when her parents took her off her meds when she was still under their conservatorship. I KNEW that was the worst thing they could’ve done!!
Being in rehab, I’m sure they had to work with her to get her on the right meds & have the dosages adjusted, now this, saw it coming unfortunately (Have a daughter very much like her).
I believe she’s still on probation, so no telling what’s next. So sad she moved out of her parents as well as soon as she was a free bird again. Very sad!

Amanda doesn’t need rehab, she needs a great therapist and she needs off prescription pills and on medical cannabis. The withdrawals from these drugs the Big Pharms push is worst than any panic attack you’ve ever experienced. Stop making mental patients criminals.

So you’d rather her smoke pot than take her bipolar meds?

I understand how horrid withdrawals – even under a doctor’s watchful eye – can be. Been there, done that. And when the current MEDS I’m on fail (as they’re bound to do – nature of the illness), I’ll be weaned off of them and titrated onto another one. The bottom line is I cannot live without them.

but it’s speculation, at best, to she’s stopped taking her meds.

Brava, Tamara. The girl needs meds and counselling so she recognizes the meds are necessary. I look at it this way: Your brain is a big chemistry set and some of the test tubes may be a little short of one thing or another. The meds get those imbalances evened out. A balanced chemistry set levels the playing field for you — for me.

It could be that is the only way to have her arrested and taken into the custody of her parents. It’s not illegal to be off your meds so it could have been for her protection. I have a brother with a similar illness and it is extremely difficult to get help from law enforcement/the health care system.

As a mother with a twenty something with bi-polar disorder. I totally understand how they can be off medication. It truly breaks my heart to see her arrested, she was doing so well on meds. The biggest problem with bi-polars is they like the rush when they are manic and don’t want to take meds at that time. Then they fall down into the dark pit of depression and kick themselves harder than any of us could ever do to them. Then up to the manic side of feelings like they are living on the edge high…and round and round we go….

I hate the mania – the rush, the irritability, lack of sleep, racing thoughts, fast speech, etc. I’m bipolar II – depression driven. I know the signs of swinging into a depressive episode; however, I have no idea how to deal with mania.

And you’re dead on with the dark pit of depression. No matter what meds I take, it’s always going to be there. Some meds just work better than others.

Brava, Jacque! Beyond courageous, your transparence is edifying to posters who don’t understand bipolar affective disorder well enough to respond to individuals who must live with it in an appropriate manner.

From insight you shared, it appears that occasional relapses, in this case involving adherance to one’s medication milieu, is not uncommon in recovery from bipolar disorder as well as other health challenges. In fact, it might be argued that relapses may be considered a part of one’s recovery process. So, in Amanda’s case, her relapse is just part of her recovery process, and over time she will develop skills and gain enough knowledge to become master of what challenges her.

My best friend growing up was a brilliant, outgoing girl. Funniest person you’d ever meet. She graduated high school at 15 and went off to college. In college, she began drinking heavily and doing drugs. It was bizarre to everyone when she stopped showing up to classes. She had such a promising future and was very artistic.

She eventually got into legal issues, due to theft. Her mother was/is a pretty influential person in our home town and convinced the judge to let her avoid jail if she went to rehab.

Long story short: We all thought the issues were rooted in addiction, then in therapy childhood molestation came out. She was eventually put on meds for being bipolar.

At this present time she is clean and VERY successful at what she does.

We’ve lost touch over the years, but I wonder a lot if she was always bipolar OR did alcohol just/drugs just enhanced it.

My heart bleeds for Amanda. I see a lot of the same traits. I believe her family is doing all they can

At some point, something will click with Amanda. Jail is not the answer though.

My son who has been diagnosed as bipolar would tell me when he would stop taking his medicine that he either felt almost manic and thought he could do it without them or he felt devoid of feelings and wanted to feel something, anything. It ‘s called medical practice for a reason. What the doctors had him on wasn’t doing the job for him. There’s a reason she stopped the meds if she did. They need to adjust meds for her and help her understand the need for them and that it’s an illness just like diabetes or high blood pressure. Good luck to Amanda to find the right person to help her.

I know I’m in the minority in this discussion but I truelly believe in the healing properties of cannabis. I’m not talking recreational use, I’m referring to medicinal. Its natural and nonaddictive. I have empathy for anyone who struggles with this issue and if it works for some people, why deny them? My body, my choice. Healing Vibes, TT

Dear ZEN JEN, I know you think you are being helpful, but suggesting pot for mental illness is nor helping. I know pot heads think it is the cure for everything.. but it isn’t. It’s called checking out and not dealing with the issue.

You know I love you, but being a pothead doesn’t help a thing It just make you to fucked up to know you have a problem. I mean this with love.

I know you love me Tamara, I love you and respect you as a woman. I just disagree.I believe therapy and under a Drs care, its a alternative. I’m not talking about potheads. I view it as holistic medicine. I do yoga n meditation to try to tame the “monkey mind”. Its not the solution for everyone but it shouldn’t be dismissed. Like comfrey creme is a natural plant that rejuvenates skin. Its took 5yrs of wrinkles away in a month! Mental illness gets a bad rap! And has a stigma attached to it.

As Micheal says, pot can have a negative effect on those with a mental illness. I actually think pot and mental illness are a recipe for disaster. I’ve seen firsthand people suffering with anxiety and depression freak out when they have smoked. It’s also a medical fact that a person with a predisposition to schizophrenia is more likely to have it surface if they smoke pot in their early teens. A lot of people (my own kids included) may disagree with me and I do agree with medicinal marijuana being beneficial for many illnesses just not mental ones.

Pot is not what someone with a mental illness needs. I understand it’s beneficial to those with certain illnesses but it is not helpful for someone like Amanda. Congrats to those who are able to help themselves with holistic treatments but there is no shame in needing prescribed medication that is monitored by a qualified physician.

Come on. ZenJen, you gotta know that pot affects everyone differently. Yeah, it can help people, but it also affects body chemistry, just like alcohol, caffeine, etc. Who knows if it would help Bynes. But it’s ignorant to proclaim that to be the solution, period, no question.

Pot actually makes schizophrenics worse…it has the opposite affect that ordinary pot smokers have while smoking it. Didn’t you think it was kind of odd the only drug they found in Amanda’s system when she was lighting fires in her neighbors driveway was pot?? I thought she was on crack..i mean honestly and then found out it was pot. Schizophrenics or person with any paranoid disorder cannot handle pot.

And I think most here are expressing that they know the connection between mental illness and drug use, homelessness, etc. Maybe we could take like 3% of our military budget and devote it to mental illness… hell, help some veterans with PTSD! In my area, the history is that back in the seventies, there were several confirmed stories of people being locked up in institutions who should have been released several years before. Instead of dealing with the situations individually, the State literally opened the doors, released all patients, and converted the institution to a prison which has since been closed. People with mental issues now make up one third of our homeless population.
Our community shelter board keeps relocating the homeless away from essential services every time a developer wants to renovate a building into expensive condos. They now are in high crime areas or on the very edge of the county with no bus transportation.
I don’t know much about bipolar, but the person I know with schizophrenia is college educated and has a genius IQ. He is tired of being robbed of his money and possessions at the beginning of each month. He would like an institutional setting where they would keep track of his medicine, he could be safe, and he could hold a job.
I applaud you Tamara and everyone else who is working on this through therapy. I’m just disgusted at our political leaders who bury their heads in the sand and treat every mental problem as if it’s caused by drugs and alcohol.

I too feel for Amanda. Bi polar is unfortunately being misdiagnosed, much like ADD in kids, and is becoming a catch all for mental illness. Amanda seems to truly have a bi polar disorder. My cousin had a bipolar disorder. And I say had because she is no longer with us. She passed just 2 months ago. SO I TAKE GREAT OFFENSE TO PEOPLE WITH NO EXPERIENCE WITH A BI POLAR DISORDER SAYING STUPID THINGS REGARDING AMANDA! For the idiots who think using cannabis instead for prescribed medication listen up —–Bi Polar is a very real DIsease caused by chemical imbalance in the the brain. It’s organic and can be controlled through drug therapy and psychiatric counseling. Unfortunately many people developed drug and alcohol issues prior to being diagnosed. It’s a form of self medication that they may or may not be aware of. Many bi polar go off their meds for reason like the stigma, they feel good so why do they need them, etc. MY COUSIN DID NOT LIKE TAKING HER MEDS BECAUSE SHE LIKED THE WAY POT, ALCOHOL, AND COCAINE MADE HER FEEL VERSES THE MEDS. Plus she thought she was smarter than everyone else. To shorten this story, she was found dead. She had been in fight days before with a alcohol-pot buddy and had been on a drunk, pot, and drug binge the day before she died. We are still awaiting final autopsy results. This is where Amanda could find herself one day!

Don’t give up on her Tamara. I agree, she had a slip and I’m sure her parents will intervene again. Most people stumble here and there. The side effects from the meds are sometimes the hardest part in taking them; however, when you’re able to find the right med, right dose, and maintain a balanced lifestyle you can do quite well. I think of Brittany Spears. She has been on medication for years (not confirmed) and is able to continue to perform and look after her children. Granted she doesn’t perform well and I think it is because the people in her camp keep pushing her for their own financial gain but that is my opinion. She isn’t out shaving her head anymore.

I also want to add that I LOVE your stance on posters that think that this is a criminal issue. We need more mental health institutions/centers instead of prisons. Many people with a mental illness self-medicate, develop an addiction and end up in trouble with the law. Proper intervention can help as opposed to housing them in a place that offers no rehabilitation or treatment. Very few people, if any, become addicted to anti-psychotics, or bi-polar meds, but pain meds, marijuana, and alcohol (self-medicating drugs) become huge issues.

Metal Illness is a bitch with a capital B. We lived with it for a year with my sister in law and her 4 suicide attempts, sadly her 5th was successful. The mental health options in this country are a joke. Each hospital stay was shorter and shorter. The doctors and nurses are overwhelmed, there is no funding for help and insurance does not always cover the recommended therapy. It is a devastating cycle of medicine makes me feel better, ill stop taking my medicine since I am better and bam all over again.

There is still a huge stigma attached to mental illness as evident by some of the posts. I said constantly my sister in law had the dumb luck of having mental illness, if it was any number of disease where they could stick you in a machine, see a spot and say there it is that is the problem, she would have been offered every medical option known to treat it. Would have kept her in the hospital for as long as needed. But with mental illness there are limited beds, doctors and resources. So they pick what they think will be the drugs that work best on you and send you home, keeping their fingers crossed that you take your meds, stay on your meds and do your follow up appointments.

Hopefully her parents will rally again and a judge will see that she needs to be under a conservator-ship for a longer period.

I wish there was more understanding about mental illness. It is a chemical imbalance, like diabetes is a chemical imbalence. Many undiagnosed people with bipolar disease use recreational drugs/alcohol to self medicate to try to feel better. It like being depressed and eating lots of carbs to increase your serotonin levels. I thank God daily for buprion.
As for the people who say put her in jail, mentally ill people die in jail. A young man died in solitary confinement of dehydration. He was in solitary becuse he was unevaluated, untreated, and acted out.
Do we judge diabetics and hypertension patients when they go off their meds cause they feel better? Amanda is very ill. Needs the psychiatric version of ICU.

I was sad to hear about Amanda. She is amazingly talented. I agree that she has mental issues and I believe that any substance problems are related to that. It’s not unusual to try and escape from mental pain by using substances. I heard that she was NOT drinking but that the substance might have been speed. I hope that her family gets involved again and that she gets immediate help. I would love to see her well again and happy. Did you know that this brilliant comedian was doing stand-up routines at comedy clubs when she was just a child and putting the adult comedians to shame with her talent? Its comments like these that make people ashamed to admit they are ill and less likely to seek treatment. And who told you that people taking medication for mental illness aren’t supposed to drive? Not all of the medications cause drowsiness. I shouldn’t be allowed to drive WITHOUT my meds because my thoughts would be everywhere but on the road! Yay to you for quitting cigarettes. I feel like I have to apologize to ZenJen, my comment was not to knock your personal choice in therapy. I have a chemical imbalance depression/anxiety disorder. Plus I have severe thyroid disease which does not help at all. I started having symptoms when I was in grade school, but my parents did not realize anything until I developed, in my freshman year of high school, severe head aches and insomnia that I could no longer hide. Since I was diagnosed so young, my psychiatrist also work with homeopathic treatments to keep my medication to the bare minimum. So I don’t question using non-traditional therapies under physician care. I now only take Zoloft, Buspirone, and Synthroid unless I have a panic attack. I am still raw from my cousins death so I get very emotional when I hear people spouting off about mental illnesses who have no first hand knowledge.
