Dance Moms Recap: Dance Concert Week

September 24, 2014 by tamaratattles 62 Comments

Dance Moms No Maddie TeamThis week is the annual dance concert. It’s not my favorite episode. I am shocked that Abby actually put Nia on the top of the pyramid. Sure she was the first place over all soloist of the entire competition, but it’s so unlike Abby to acknowledge Nia. There are a couple of non team members participating in the group dance including CHRISTy’s kid Sarah. At least for now. The concert is a tribute to Abby’s mother.

The group dance is basically everyone doing 45 seconds of their own choreography as an audition for a solo at nationals. Abby is bringing two soloist to nationals. Once will be Maddie and Kendell, Chloe and Nia will have to fight it out for the other slot.

The last competition that Chloe won, Abby went to the judges and tried to convince them to give the win to this other kid that is dancing with them today. That’s a new level of asshattery for Miss Abby.

Open Auditions for DanceMoms 2014

Last week Chloe had to get a MRI on her foot. She is supposed to be resting it. It is much more injured this week. It’s a problem. Christy goes to the doctor and she has a fracture and is in a boot for about a week. Hopefully she could still dance in nationals. Chloe going out made the group routine imbalanced so cute little Sarah is out of the routine. CHRISTy is making things so much worse for Sarah.

The diamond heist group number was awesome! Nia was particularly good. Why is Abby’s hair in curlers during the entire concert!

The 45 second challenge went well for Kendall and Nia but not so good for Mackenzie. Kamryn fell on a turn and Abby’s response was I can see her face all the way back here! She plays to the back of the house! I don’t get why Abby is suddenly in love with this Kamryn chick. Abby gave the moms a written critique of each kid. On Kamryn’s critique, her failed turns are not even mentioned. Nia’s critique was harsh.

Next week is nationals. We still don’t know who will get the solos. I’m guessing Maddie and Kamryn.

I don’t know why Abby is always so harsh with Nia. I’d hoped that between the board, Nia winning her solo and Nia’s mom going off on Abby, that Abby would ease up on Nia.
I hope that Nia’s Mom has seen through Abby’s BS and anger and will cut to the heart of the matter and call Abby out in her racism! I know contracts are due to be signed soon, and Abby couldn’t give a shit if Nia or Chloe and their Moms return to the show. I know Abby has always been jealous of Nia’s mom, knowing she has a college education and a Principle of a school. But Abby’s underlying issue has always been about racism. She hardly ever gives Nia any role without it being “ethnic” in origin.
Last night on Abby’s studio rescue, the issue was between a mother and daughter. Daughter wanted to buy out Mom, so Mom could retire. Mom thought that the daughter had no business sense and was a lazy slob who hired her friends and all the friends were lazy slobs too. Mom was correct, yet Abby raked Mom over the coals because it reminded her of how her Mom treated Abby, when Abby wanted to buy out her parents. I know this, because Abby pretty much said it several times.
What shocked was Abby admitting how much she charges a month! The studio owner stated she charges $60 a month for dance lessons. Abby remarked that BOTH McKenzie and Maddie together, pay less a month than that! Knowing that, if I was Nia’s mom, I’d walk out. No amount of exposure for Nia, or free lessons ($20 a month) would be worth the amount of abuse Nia receives at the hands of Abby.
On that note, I hope Nia gets a solo at nationals, but knowing Abby, she’s liable to give the remaining solo to a new girl that isn’t from Abby’s studio…

What? You got to be kidding! I pay $70 a month for 2 hrs a week for my 9 year old. 30 min solo instruction is $25. I won’t even get into the cost if you are a competitive dancer. There is no way she’s just charging $20 a month unless she really doesn’t have a studio! BTW, my daughter’s competitive dance team has won national titles. There is really no “national” to it at all it just means that they have competed and placed in so many of sponsors competitions and are invited back for the “national” title competition.

I’m just saying what I heard on Abby’s studio rescue show.
I’m glad you enlightened us on “Nationals”!
See that makes sense as too why Abby’s team always seem to place first, even when it’s shitty choreography (like the seven Smurfs routine!) and why Nationals are so big on Abby’s list!

It’s big to every studio. It brings kids to their studio. At my daughter’s studio, they start as early as 5 competing. The girls are very passionate about it but it’s not like winning a national title in an Olympic sport. It’s more like the pageant circuit kinda.

Okay, Angel, glad your daughter won Nationals and her lessons are more expensive than any of our poor lil souls could even imagine, but as usual…
        YOU MISSED THE POINT!
Back to the point, I definitely agree Abby has some inferiority complex with Nia’s mom’s accomplishments–shes always giving her crap for not being able to stand around watching them practice. I would just chalk it up to that, but the whole thing where Nia is the one-size-fits-all “ethnic” performer makes me suspect a little racism. If it calls for dark skin, send Nia in (but she won’t win!)

I like Nia. She has matured as a dancer. Abby does give her the ” ethnic roles” Nia won’t solo at nationals. If Maddie can’t perform, Abby will go for Kamryn despite the bad turns. Abby will use Chloe’ s foot to keep her from dancing, and will find something wrong with Kendall, just to see the veins pop out in Jill’s forehead. His is right, Abby picks who she wants. It’s not always on merit. She might announce since Maddie is out of town there will be no solos ’cause she can’t count on any dancer to dance like Maddie. Of course she’ll do this right at Nationals so Kristi can throw the mother of all hissy fits. All those girls are pretty and talented, they are just not little Maddie clones.

I think it will be Kendall and Kamryn. I don’t think Kamryn is anything special. I think the anorexic Sarah would be good. I don’t see Chloe dancing on that foot and Abby hates Nia.

She really does hate Nia. She hates Chloe too. Now has grown into her body. She certainly moves and dances with more confidence. I wish Misty Copeland would be used as an example to Nia rather than LaQueefa, even though Misty has yet to dance Odette/Odille in Swan lake because she is black

Jacque, I don’t get a racist vibe from Abby toward Mia. Over the years she has said that Mia will definitely dance professionally, and I assumed that she and Mia and her family know that some of these jobs will be b/c she is black, ex. The Lion King. Is it racist that Maddie would not be suitable for those roles? BTW, not only was Holley a principal, but she also has her doctorate. Mia was the first of this group to be homeschooled as Holley took her out of school 2 years ago.

Abby does NOT hate Nia. She never has. She’s harsh on Nia cos the child needs it. You have to think of Nia now to where Nia was and when she got the Most Improved Award cos Nia is most improved. She was good in the routine this week, but most of the time Nia is either a beat behind or a syncopated beat behind.

Abby likes that Nia puts in the work. Nia — like Maddie and Mackenzie — is there everyday. Dance is her extracurricular. Nia doesn’t cry and whine to Abby and really Abby just likes being antagonistic toward Holly. Always has. She hates Chloe’s mom like she does Kelly and really wants to see Kristie (Christie?) go, but she doesn’t feel that kind of annoyance and hatred toward Holly.

Nia needs the tough love. It’s made her a better dancer.

Nia sucks. She was off and out of step in the group dance. And she made some weird arm movements like she was running from a crime scene. Which I guess they were. Only the other girls did it gracefully and she did it…well…nia-ishly. And where does she get off calling her “Abby” instead of “MISS Abby”? And sitting there saying “I’m worried because sometimes Abby doesn’t always pick the best dancer…” How the fuck dies she get away with saying that? If another mom said it, her kid would be benched. Let alone a KID being that disrespectful and nasty. I think that everyonec is afraid to say anything because they are black and no one wants to be called racist like I’m about to be. The remark was not just disrespectful but delusional. DoesSHE actually think she is the best dancer? I hope not.

And what who retest was Chloe made up for. Is her mom gonna turn her out on the corner if she can’t dance? I’m sure there would be another little hooker that Kristi would whine about because she gives better handies than Chloe.

Why would you post such a nasty comment about 2 children. Nia was not being disrespectful, in fact I have never seen her act anything but respectful to Abby. Personally I don’t think that women deserves respect from anyone. The way she treats those children, especially Nia and Chloe is so wrong. Soon Maddie is going to need better management and better training and Abby will be dropped like a hot potato. Melissa will see to that, when she realizes what is needed to advance her daughters career.
As for you, why do you feel it necessary to talk about the children that way? They are not the problem. The adults are the problem and my heart aches for them when I see their faces. They try so hard to pretend it doesn’t matter. Then I read something like you post and I wonder who treated you that way when you were young?

I don’t feel it is personal to ask why you dislike these children. Your comments don’t seem to have much to do with their talent, but with them personally. If you were offended I apologize. I just wonder why Abby or any adult gets a pass for treating a child this way. I also noticed that maddie seems to be changing. She was was not encouraging to her sister and she seemed to smile a little when she heard chloe was hurt. I hope that’s not what is happening.

So far so good for her at ADLC. And, Abby has gotten McKenzie some sort of recording contract. I don’t know it to be true, but Abby says she has dancers on Broadway. BTW, Kendall was on an advertisement for a large hospital down here in my part of south Georgia.

This show will end, like all reality shows do. People will eventually get tired of Abbys behavior. As maddie gets more famous other managers will come calling. Some with better connections and when maddies contract is up with abby, Melissa will go elsewhere. Mach and Kendal are not really Abbys priority, until Abby sees maddie slipping away.

Just because your stupid statement is buffered with “especially Nia” doesn’t mean the initial statement of nia AND CHLOE not being naturally talented “as…” is any less pointed. Especially since this conversation block doesn’t pertain to contrasting any of the dancers skill levels.

And no, you’re not racist, you’re prejudice — you very well could be racist, you just haven’t displayed it in anything I’ve seen yet — but it’s not my responsibility to spoonfeed you basic racial rhetoric. I thought it was funny when Abby said the show was very professional, considering she was in hair curlers for most of the show.

I hope Chloe doesn’t get picked to dance in Nationals. She needs to let her foot fully recover. One week is not enough for a foot fracture.

And Nia complaining about Abby picking favorites sounded a lot like her mom.

Nia complained about the favoritism in a confessional, if I’m not mistaken, so of course she wouldn’t “get benched” for saying at as previously mentioned

Abby’s blatant favoritism is such an integral part of the show at this point, I’m surprised it’s even being brought up — it’s like saying “Abby’s a fat cruel mean child abusing bully” — yeah, we get it, it doesn’t really need to be said; I definitely don’t think it’s Nia complaining “like her mom,” it’s Nia complaining like EVERY other mom and saying what every other child (and viewer) already knows.

Week after week, month after month, year after year, I’m sure it would wear you the fuck down to have an educational figurehead that either ignores you, talks on the phone, or just meanders out of the room during your individual sessions – just to spite you – much less a 12 year old girl.

Organization behavior and development are a major part of my MBA classes when just a few years ago it wasn’t part of any core curriculum that I ever had – the studies and theories are pretty much to a science and the depth of workforce motivation is no joke.

Going back and watching the first few seasons of Dance Moms, you can really see the transformation of Abby just being a natural ‘tough love’ instructor before becoming a caricature of herself and waging psychical warfare on preteens.

I think the damage done is real – there have been specific instances of Abby psyching out Chloe, Nia, and Kendall before shows and I’ve witnessed the profound affect it’s had on their performance and demeanor.

Juxtaposition Maddie, whose confidence grew unshakeable across season 3 after being conditioned in a completely OPPOSITE manner.

I’m obviously not saying Maddie hasn’t worked hard or may not be more naturally inclined towards the profession, but it’s clear, to me at least, that the differing environmental factors played a huge role in how the girls developed.

Like I said about it, “if I’m not mistaken”, because I couldn’t remember the details — the point is that it was not in front of Abby, much less addressed to her, and it was a relatively private CONVERSATION between Chloe and Nia; why would she need to address her by ‘title’ to a fellow ~12 year old when she’s not even present? Why do you even care in the first place?

I used to watch this show VERY casually with my best friend who passed away in a car accident, back when it was all shock about the promiscuity and considered predator bait — I didn’t know the names of anyone but Chloe always stuck out to me even then. My friend always referred to maddie as “the baby prostitute” because it seemed like she wore the most makeup and would be favorite among Meggan-law’ers

Abby is a very tough coach. She’s not very “fair” I pick at her a lot when I post but I love her and would hang out with her any day.

LOL no problem! I’m just having fun here – but I’ve been watching the numbers tick up too!

My comments usually get moderated if I post more than once in the same thread with little time between them. I just figured it was a built-in spam blocker eh 🙂

Is there anyone nastier than Christie? Surely she has seen what her face looks like when she goes on those tirades. I seldom truly dislike someone on TV, but I dislike Christie. I liked Kelly a lot and she really gave Abby a fit. I do believe that Abby suffered from childhood with her hatred of Kelly.

I just wanna know when parents were expected to watch their kids’ entire practices for extracurricular activities!

Not just this show, but like my best friend said, “All the parents watch football practice!” I didn’t believe her, but I went one day and I counted more adults than players… YES, of course there were probably a few with no parent there, but when my (much) younger sibling was in high school not more than a decade ago, nobody watched practice. They watched the games. Do people have the luxury of not needed to work anymore? Or maybe they’re just unemployed?

My daughter was a competitive gymnast for 8 years. I had to drive an hour to get to her practices four nights a week. You can just go to other stores for so many times. The easiest thing for me to do was to wait in the gym. I also wanted to see who was teaching her and how they were teaching her. My daughter would have been Abby’s student for about 10 minutes. I would have never allowed someone to “teach” her in that fashion, no matter what the pay-off MIGHT be down the road.

Notice how HB Wannabe uses it’s younger sibling as an example? If it had children then it would know that of course parents take interest in their children’s activities and would like to watch practices. Also, as Peach stated, sometimes it’s easier just to wait on them. Ok BH Wannabe, do some math – some children have two parents, some children have grandparents who like watch, and some children have siblings that may just be along for the ride, so it’s not surprising that there are more spectators than participants. For the record, HB try as you might, you are not TeeCee. She makes sarcasm into an art form. You do not!

Oh, Angel, sorry I didn’t respond to you. Ooops!
You missed the point… AGAIN! No sarcasm in my comment, just wondering.
And I wouldn’t dare to say I even come close to teecee’s razor sharp tongue. But to have it even cross your mind… thanks.

Peach: Yeah, that situation I totally understand. For the distance, level of competition, different coaches, etc. I was talking about high school football practice after school. Same went for the other school sports.
      Maybe just a cultural shift?
PS: Oh, God, if I had a kid in Abby’s school–that’d last about 1/2 a class!!!

Abby’s hair was in curlers because it was the rehearsal that they filmed but they made it look like it was the actual show.

So how does Abby wearing her hair in curlers make it look like the actual show?

LOL! Holy shit I don’t know why that just made me laugh so hard.

Watching Abby’s curlers bounce around while she shook her head and pursed her lips was definitely a highlight for me. I think the curlers have somehow been mystically imbued with Abby’s pure, unadulterated bitchness – like I just see them animating when she’s not around and purposefully burning one of the little girls.

The modern day Medussa – a head full of curlers instead of snakes. The only thing she was missing was sucking down a Marlboro Red.

Mmm…now that I think about it she definitely seems like a closet smoker.

        Best line yet:
“The modern day Medussa – a head full of curlers instead of snakes.”
        Truest words ever spoken:
“… She definitely seems like a closet smoker.”

        Props props. Love it.
