Jodi Arias Allowed To Act As Her Own Attorney In Death Penalty Retrial

August 4, 2014 by tamaratattles 160 Comments

jodijuangoingdown

Jodi Arias went to court today to ask to be her own attorney in her upcoming death penalty sentencing trial. Nope, I am not kidding. And Judge Stephens granted her appeal!

Judge Stephens asked Jodi Arias if she understood she is giving up right to counsel. “Do you understand you may face the death penalty?” “Do you understand there will be no delays?” “I don’t believe this is in your best interest,”  Judge Stephens said as she accepted Jodi’s motion to waive her right to counsel.

So no more Nurmi and Willmott? Don’t they wish. They still have to “act in an advisory capacity”.  This essentially means they have to work three times as hard to give her a defense while not actually getting to present evidence or cross-examine witnesses.

Jodi Arias gets what she wants, a head to head showdown with prosecutor, Juan Martinez. And of course a ton of attention. Sadly, last I heard, cameras will NOT be allowed in the courtrooms for this round. I hope Jodi can do something to change this. Please, GOD, let there be cameras.

Don’t you know it. That’s probably why she wants to be her own counsel. I guess she says if she’s going to get the needle, she wants to go out in a blaze of glory with her own performance. A performance it will be too.

Shellbelle, there will be one camera to feed the press pool. I don’t exactly understand what the ruling says. It seems to say that it cannot be shown in real time. In another interpretation of Judge Stephen’s ruling, it says that none of the trial can be shown until a verdict is reached.
My question: This was Nurmi and Wilmot’s idea (we all know that JA needs the camera and attention as we need air), so now that Jodi is the boss, will she ask for that ruling to be set aside? After all, she’s the smartest person in any room.

I want cameras, not having cameras is unfair to ME. I deserve fair treatment. This is unfair. Ha Ha This would be so good to watch. I can see Martinez’s frustration with Jodi’s legalize already.

I hope she doesn’t somehow cause an issue that with all the warnings, advisors, etc, there is not a legal loophole that throws a twist. I just want her to never get one second more publicity or sympathy than necessary. I must say, there probably is some satisfaction for her to do it this way, considering her brazen ego.

We all know she is guilty. Yes. The both were in the wrong by continuing the dysfunctional relationship. Yea. Travis was guilty too, by leading her on and by continuing to sleep with her. The cops needed to be called when she was peeking in windows and slashing tirea. He would probably still be alive today had he handled it in a mature adult manner. I kind of feel sorry for her. She needed medical treatment for her Personality disorder early on. Perhaps, none of this would have occured had she received proper medical treatment. She’s going to make a mess of this and I wish we could view it. She’s not right in the head and we all know it. I don’t believe in the death penalty….but if anyone deserves it, she does…for the heinous ways she murdered him. So far I don’t think she feels guilty. She doesn’t say she’s Sorry to the family. I think she’s just sorry that she got caught.

I really don’t believe she is really blaming the victim but I do believe Travis should’ve taken drastic steps to get Jodi out his life. Jodi did some scary things, especially when she sneaked into his house and popped up in his friends house while they were there. He should have called the police, pronto and probably moved to be on the safe side. Travis allowed sex to rule his mind despite the crazy things Jodi was doing. The things she did would have scared the ish out of me! Having sex with her would’ve been the least thing on my mind. Travis may have been alive had he stopped seeing her and got police involved. I would have went as far as got a gun as well. It is such a sad and creepy story though.

As far as Jodi representing herself, I believe that’s her way of having some control over her case. She’s done now and has accepted her faith in jail and don’t give a damn so why not represent self? Lol

        Erin:

“I really don’t believe she is really blaming the victim, but…”

The word “but” is a negator. By that word alone, you obviously do believe Jen’s blaming the victim.

I’m just gonna say this slowly, and one last time, because the level of stupid is so astounding and my dad has always told me that I shouldn’t play with Internet dummies.

IT’S NEVER THE VICTIM’S FAULT. EVER. EVER. EVER. EVER FUCKING EVER.

I don’t care if it’s “but their partner was abusive and the signs were there” or “they shouldn’t have been at x,y, or z at that time of night”, or “they shouldn’t have dressed that way” or any of the myriad stupid fucking “they shouldn’t haves”.

By making any such statements you are essentially saying that it’s okay for Jodi to do what she did…or at least removing part of the blame from her and putting it squarely on Travis’ (and his friends. And his family’s.) shoulders.

        And that’s disgusting.

That’s true amber. A personality disorder means that person functions differently than “normal”. It’s not something psych meds or treatment can really help much. You can treat accompanying anxiety or depression etc, but the personality disorder is always there. Also in question is when is it a personality disorder or just an evil person. Antisocial and Borderline personality disorders are very real and scary but all psych diagnoses are at the discretion of the physician.

I would like to correct you on your professional assessment that there isn’t any medical treatment for personality disorders. There is medicine that works to stabilize impulse control, mood stabilizers, amongst other meds. Also, there is cognitive behavioral therapy that is effective. I am speaking from my personal experience. I am borderline (Like Madonna!) and I live a healthy, productive life and am “normal” as another doctor chimed that we’re not. There is no normal, as everyone is different. Spreading this bullshit that there isn’t any effective medical treatment is harmful and perpetrates misinformation about mental health issues. On a lighter note, TT, I really hope there are cameras allowed because barrister Arias is sure to accessorize her fake glasses with a bagel head! I need more bagel heads in my life.

I’m sorry Mark, I hope you continue to have a great life. The treatments you revieved are helping, but not curing you. Like I said, there are mood stabilizers etc. and ways to manage pd, but no CURE. It’s in the psych textbooks, I’ve heard it from the mouth of of the psych doc on the hospital unit. (It’s nothing to be ashamed of or defensive about.) My other point is I am not sure if Jodi really has pd or is just evil.

Cat, thank you very much for your support. It’s much appreciated. <3
Tango, your well wishes are adequate, but again, you are missing the point. There is no cure for mental illness and I'm not sure why you still want to speak out of school on this subject. The object of treatment is to understand, identity and recognize behavioral patterns so that one may live a healthier life for themselves and those around them. Not once did the term cure ever come up previously, so it does seem to me that misinformation about mental health is still coming through loud and clear. I hope you can understand this and think before you comment. I'm not ashamed, as I use my real name and defensive because of misinformation that causes more harm than good. Unless you've experienced a personality disorder personally, it's best to be thought a fool, instead of opening your mouth and removing all doubt.
TT, I am so glad to be back! And I'm not cured, but in a goddamn great place! Though I'd rather be sitting with you and Banjo, sipping chardonnay and giving each other bagel heads. Good news about Edgar and is UF on a milk carton or just slacking? <3

Cat I’m sorry, I am speaking according to the current accepted DSM and what is considered current theory. Personality Disorders are considered not curable, merely treatable/manageable. So if JODI really has a pd, she needs treatment, which she’d probably never seek..etc., a conversation about JODI. (I feel bad for this Mark guy, but I was discussing JODI originally.) I hope Mark finds the cure, (or not, whatever makes him happy), and has a lovely life full of sunshine and rainbows, really. I don’t care though, cuz this post is about JODI…..

I am in school and just did a semester of psych nursing in which I had to study the DSM etc at length. As far as your “STIGMA”..you can drop it because I just DID A SEMESTER TRAINING TO CARE FOR PEOPLE in need of psychiatric care. So no stigma here, just trying to discuss JODI and her supposed pd. I’d love to chat with you about the move to a single axis system, and/or the new research involving a hybrid diagnostic methodology in Section III but sadly it would take a bit more education on your part than a single semester course for nurses in order to keep up.

You are a prime example of the phrase, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I pity your future patients, should you make it that far. You clearly have no empathy for anyone and need to feel particularly well educated on matters than you have no substantive training in.

Mark, I wonder if Tango got to the section in her studies about tying patients to chairs? I’m sure she will excel at that.

That’s the thing about therapy and treatment. It’s different for each person, because each person is different. I’ve been in therapy before (PTSD, which, by the way JODI does NOT have). I’ve had lousy therapists, who didn’t listen to me, but relied on their own over-inflated egos (I am the doctor, YOU are the patient). I dropped them like a hot potato. I finally found a great therapist on the 3rd try. That therapist quite literally saved my life.

I recently went back into therapy. For anxiety…sort of a “survivor’s guilt” over beating breast cancer. They tell me it’s quite common after months of chemo and radiation to be anxious when treatment is over. When my doctors suggested therapy, I jumped at the chance. There is no shame in getting help. Or at least, there shouldn’t be. I got lucky this time, I have a great therapist, who specializes in treating cancer patients.

Keep up the great work. I know how hard it is. But it’s well worth it. Don’t let egotistical idiots like Tango bring you down.

I’m sorry Mark and did not mean to denigrate your journey. To my knowledge CBT, DBT, mind fullness, therapy and some medications can be very helpful for borderline personality disorder. Medications can be very helpful for schizoaffective disorder.
They are not so effective for antisocial personality disorder.
Didn’t watch the whole show but always found the premise of the TV show Dexter fascinating, where had antisocial personality disorder and his father had taught him a code to control it. Never kill innocents etc.

Did you really mean to be patronizing? Mark’s post wasn’t rambling and it didn’t read as though he’s particularly irritated.

But now I’m irritated. You and Amber are the embodiment of the stigma that surrounds mental illness, and that is both frightening and sad. Quite frankly; if either one of you are the definition of “normal”, I’d rather be my brand of batshit crazy. Like, forever. Which I will be. Because there’s no fucking cure for mental illness.

Sorry, Tamara, for my rants that are all over this thread today. There’s an extra special amount of stupid floating around.

You wanted to go there, so let’s take it there.

I have a BA in psychology. NOT ONE FUCKING SEMESTER OF NURSING PSYCH BUT A WHOLE FOUR YEAR FUCKING DEGREE, TWO YEARS OF WHICH WERE DEDICATED TO STUDYING ONLY PSYCHOLOGY.

I have a brother who has schizoeffective disorder. We – my brother, my family, and all of our friends – have lived and learned together for 23 years about the ins and outs and ups and downs of the mental health industry.

I was a late diagnosis of bipolar 2, along with PTSD and depression NOS (you’re the nursing student, I assume you know what “NOS” stands for).

It is a fucking struggle every goddamned fucking day to deal with everything. But I do it. I get up every fucking day and I take my meds whether I want to or not. I opted to not have the coveted elective plastic surgery I have wanted because the Dr. wanted me to stop taking my medications. My tits can hang to the floor before I’ll stop taking my medication.

I am acutely aware of my actions and behaviors even when I’m not in control, and that happens a lot. Theoretically, I know I shouldn’t obsess about the stupid shit I obsess over. In practice, it’s like battling windmills. THANK GOD, THANK FUCKING GOD THAT I AN WHO I AM AND THAT MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY LOVE ME IN SPITE OF MYSELF. They will put up with me even when I AM SICK OF MYSELF.

As for normal, I never said you thought I wasn’t normal – YOU DID. Deny it as you may, it’s there in black and white.

Oh Jae. I love you and welcome you with open arms into the bagel head club. It was formed when Sheree Whitfield sued me and would come to court with her hair in a knot, resembling a bagel stuck on her bald head. It is the HW hairstyle of choice when going to court. Tre does great bagel head. It’s a weird version of the top knot that criminal housewives wear to court. 🙂

I believe Travis didn’t take enough measures to ensure his safety; instead he continued to have sex with Jodi. He should have removed himself from Jodi completely. You can change your verbiage all you want, but there’s still a pig under that lipstick.

Maybe she was good in bed. Who knows? Who cares? Travis Alexander isn’t here to defend himself so shut the fuck up about “he should have” or “he could have” because all you’re really saying is that Jodi Arias wouldn’t have killed the man if he’d left her alone.

His mother is the devil incarnate (I seriously privately refer to her as AC “AntiChrist”) and she hates my guts (can’t imagine why ;)) She was in a bad car accident a few days ago and I have sent flowers but I am trying to find a way to force myself to do the “right” thing and stop by to visit her. I. Just. Can’t. She’s evil, and outwardly mean. She doesn’t even try to put on a nice face when she’s NOT in traction (she’s not but one can dream). Jeez. Listening to myself, no wonder she hates me lol.

I often wonder why he disnt press charges against her? Any reasonable person who knew they were in danger would have called the police? I would have and I feel badly that he died in such a horrendous way. It takes two to be in a dysfunctional unhealthy. relationship. Why didn’t he put an end to it? I wish his family knew more and would have counseled him on helping himself before it got out of hand. 🙁

You can’t seriously think that poor judgment on his part deserves “blame” for his murder. No one thinks someone is going to kill them like that. Of course it woulda been wonderful if he’d have started pressing charges for all the stalking etc. But then if she wasn’t locked away, maybe just had a restraining order, she may have kept it up and broke in and killed him anyway. Who knows what he could have done to prevent this, if anything, this murder was commited by a total wack job.

He didn’t think that she was a threat to him any longer. She moved back to CA and they were no longer in a relationship! She had been gone for 1-2 months when she took her psychotic self back to avenge her dismissal from his life. She stalked all her ex-boyfriends too. This was in no way Travis’s fault. Jodi is the psycho murderer and if she hadn’t been caught she would have done it again.

The picture is still awesome and snarky. Made me smile. What Jen fails to realize is there are sometimes just pure evil people in the world and Jodie Arias is one of them. Her complete delusional/lack of any empathy or humanity frightens me. She planned a murder of pure torture and she enjoyed it. (Thats right Jen!!) She went there to kill him. What did it for me were the Gas cans, removing the license plate at his place, and turning off the cell phone so it would not ping. (All done prior to entering his house). Then the manner she killed and the way she views herself and portrayed herself as a victim after she was caught. I wouldn’t say she is crazy. I would say she is worse, because she is so methodical—evil. The graphic was perfect as I hope for justice/Martinez to take her down at trial and regardless of if she gets death penalty in this world, she will have an express ride down in the next world…and that one she can’t talk here way out of.

She was lying both times. The ninja story came first because she didn’t realize the massive amount of evidence they had against her when she concocted that tale. She did stick to that story for a LONG time but I guess she finally realized it was too ridiculous even for her. So she lied about Travis chasing her into the closet without thinking it all the way through.

No one chased her into the closet. She never went into the closet as Travis didn’t own a gun. She brought the gun with her and had it in the bathroom while he was in the shower. Therefore, no evidence of a struggle in the closet.

Really Jen. Do you know how many 50B orders (restraining orders) have been issued to both women and men to keep their significant other away from them that didn’t work? Do you actually think that Jodi would pay attention to a piece of paper telling her she had to stay away from Travis? She is a psychopath. It would have meant nothing. It may have incited her to murder him sooner. To blame Travis for his own murder because Jodi decided if she couldn’t have him no one could is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. She deserves what she gets and if it’s a life sentence, even more.

And the blaming of the victim? If men who had sex with skanks who give it up freely deserved to die horribly, there would be no men left on the planet.

Judge Stephens asked Jodi what medications she was on and she told her but Troy Hayden did not mention it. Perhaps he will do a written story himself? It appears he is a news anchor now, where previously I think, I could be wrong that he also wrote print stories..

Nothing would have stopped Jodi. She is a psychopath and couldn’t handle rejection. She planned this murder so she wouldn’t get caught. Even if he had called the police, she still would have come back to kill him. She was obsessed with him.

Wow. I finally watched the made for TV movie. I had no idea how obsessed she was with him! She slashed his tires 2xs and his gf tires once. Woah. Yeah the cops should have been called and he should have documented each incident. They sell cameras n floodlights now days. It would have been easy to catch her on Camera breaking in and entering.? Gawd….the levels she went to….and how her mind must work is truly inconceivable! My Dad was brutally Murdered. I was angry for a long time. The person who killed him are not right in the head. Rather hen being angey for the reof my life. I went to Counseling and realized that miss my Dad and nothing can change it. That’s why I wish people who are strugfling with Mental illness issues

My Dad will never come back….but I cannot be angry for the rest of my life. This whole trial sickens me that it drags on and on. I wish people on the jury would have done their job. She needs to be put away and the key should be thrown away. She seems to have no remorse and she would probably do it again and again if she were allowed to be out amon us.

I wish they would build those “Euthanasia Coasters”. I would love to see Arias and others like her take that ride. Google it. Pretty interesting. No drugs. Just strap them in, and let the g forces do the work.

Then maybe we will stop hearing about the poor, poor murderer who “suffered” during a “botched” execution. Did they think about the suffering they caused their victims? No.

    Jen,
If I recall correctly,Travis did tell a couple of his close friends tht jodi was harassing him by slashing tires, peeking in windows and sneaking in the doggie door and hiding under a Christmas tree. Even of he had applied for and received a TRO it wouldn’t have saved him. She’s a methodical and logical psychopath.
Should she get a death penalty verdict she will get much more publicity along with her years of automatic appeals. Maybe that’s what she’s aiming for. More notoriety. Life without parole will shut her down. She’ll be out of the news and confined to her small solitary cell with nothing to do but replay and rewrite history.
There are a few people that report on the trial and I’ve tweet it. This won’t make up for camera time but you should be able to keep up with courtroom drama.
I hope they take away her pencils and paper so she can no longer do her ‘artwork’ and sell it. She may yet again find something to sur Sheriff Arpaio for. Busted implants and Hep1 are currently on her list. I’m sure she’ll find more. She’s wonderfully inventive.
I hope this rodeo starts in early September . Should be interesting. If she petitions the court again for cameras to be allowed, I wonder if Martinez would object?
Life without parole. No more Jodi, no reason for any more attention paid to her. That will anger her more than the DP. Isolated and forgotten.

Deco, despite Travis telling his friends about what Jodi did, he still spent time with her. Travis needed to cut all ties, get the police involved, press charges and move. I know moving takes a lot but I would have been out of there or at least change the locks, got an alarm system, etc.

Cat, the euthenasia coaster is one freaky ride. She’d probably survive it somehow.
I hate roller coasters so the mere thought of this one is terrifying to me. I’d never board it. I umderstAnd that there is a button at the top of the ascent that you can push if you change your mind. What I don’t understand is why it can accommodate 24 people. What if someone changes their mind and others don’t?

Oh, I didn’t see the part about the button for stopping the ride? From what I read from the designer, if for some reason it didn’t work the first time, they simply would be taken though a 2nd time. But the designer said that would be extremely rare, if not impossible.

I like the idea of 24 to a ride. And it sounds very cost effective to me.

The strangest part, though, is….why was I even searching for such a device in the middle of the night? Yikes.

A ride for 24 would be more cost efficient as you stated. There is a button you can push at the top, just before the peak and descent. Now if you’re doing this voluntarily because you’re ill and looking to commit suicide in a peaceful way that’s fine with me. But you might change your mind and hit the button. What if some of the other 23 want to continue and ride to die?
The whole concept is crazy. I don’t know why you were searching for it. I know I did because you brought it to my attention. I couldn’t pass up finding out about it. The whole ride is short. Maybe 2 minutes. Quick, clean and methodical. Pain free too.

I think the search came about because I was sick and tired of hearing about “botched” executions, and “oh, the poor murdering monster suffered”. No one seems to care about the pain and suffering these assholes put their victims through. But enough ranting.

I totally missed the part about the button to stop the ride. The link I had from the original designer, described it more as a form of execution, instead of lethal injection, etc. The ride is for 24…face it…how many of these monsters are on death row, while we feed and house them, searching for a “nice” way to execute? Why not just carry out the executions in groups?

As much as I think the death penalty had been earned by Jodi I think there will be a few that will feel sorry for her on that jury.
Unless Jodi does something that shows her scary side I don’t see the death penalty happening.

She never has to go on the stand regardless of attorney. And may attorney’s are saying that her defending herself makes it harder for a jury to vote to fry her. They will see her as a person rather than a defendant. I suspect she will get life without either way so this will be fun for her.

I didn’t think it through either. I just assumed Jodi would want to testify on her own behalf (after what 16 days the first time) and Juan would then be allowed to cross-examine her. She is not one to shrink away from telling her side over and over again. How many media interviews did she do?

This trial will drag on n on. She has to be the most unstable person around. I predict a freak out during court…..much like Ted Bundy did in court, when she gets her ass handed to her by Juan Martinez. Why are they allowing this Mentally Unstable person to waste tax payers dollars? If she becomes overwhelmed. and cannot continue and it becomea too much for her….then what? Do they start all over again? She will not make it. She is too unstable and has low impulse control…it appears.

It’s so late in rural south Georgia. I have been cleaning and cooking all day b/c my soon to be 13 years old grandson is coming tomorrow…uh, today. I can’t wait to come back today later and read all of your comments. Is it wrong that I am so excited that she’s about to be sent off for the rest of her life, and that’s her best option? For all you newbies since the trial, this place rocks and rolls for Jodi Arias. I did find during the trial last year that I am no longer a dyed in the wool death penalty advocate, although I would be perfectly fine if that is her sentence. I would also be OK with life as she would go straight to Perryville where I am certain that the current Queen of Perryville has no intention of handing her crown to JA. TT, there are already 139 comments. Let’s roll trial friends!

We did discuss the pros and cons of the DP last year. I changed from wanting death go a life sentence just to limit her appeals. Life means no freebie just because appeal for her, an appeal will have to have merit. A long time alone in a tiny cage is what jodi needs. I gst the feeling that she will have her jodi-its harrass witnesses now she is a lawyer she will have full access to ALL info. And that will get her another delay..it did when alyce laviolet said she was harassed so why not now?

If Tamara still has old blogs available from the original trial, you would really enjoy reading them, they were wonderful. That trial consumed my life, I hate to admit. Martinez was a superstar! JA made me utterly repulsed. I felt compelled to watch every bit of it after the fiasco trial of Casey Anthony; I was looking for justice. I am still waiting to see the dp given so JA can live on death row for the rest of her life.

The posts are there but you may have to look at the monthly archives for some of them. I was so consumed by the trial that people started to get pissed and leave who weren’t interested. 🙂
